    Pat actually had an assassin when Simone went to assassinate Brennan, which makes his whole interaction at 17:00 even more wild. Pat does not have a Contessa, but still manages to make it look like he messed up and accidentally revealed his card. You can *see* the panic on his face and his entire demeanor shifts as everyone immediately pins him as having a Contessa! By simply pretending to be a bad liar (or actually being one, I legitimately cannot tell) he has put himself in position for Brennan to rely on him, and he immediately switches gears to set up the iconic "Then Perish" moment. Pat is either the best or worst liar of our entire generation, but no matter what his improv skills are insane.

  • @NineWheels

    "Then perish" is obviously amazing, but I think it's even more so due to how it's set up with Brennan's unnervingly sensual delivery of "I'll do fuckin' anything". The audio boosting on that line is just the icing on the cake.

    This was the first video I had seen of coup being played, and despite seeing many other coup videos and coup expansions since then, it remains the most entertaining to watch so far, despite my having watched it 5 times. I would love to see this cast return for another game or two of coup, especially Brennan, because he really adds a special element to the personalities. His duke persona was awesome, and makes it worth re-watching if only to watch the range of the other's reactions to his 'dukely' decisions. Priceless

    • @Kewlausgirl
      @Kewlausgirl 3 года назад +20

      It was really fun but... It was so frustrating to watch because omg those rules were so wrong! That's not how you play at all...
      Check out the rules online. You can't block for other people other than yourself. Only thing you can block is foreign aid as a Duke. And when you reveal your influence card, turn it up and place it on the table. It only goes back into the deck, if you didn't lose.. So if you were called out and that influence card was true. Or if the ambassador/inquisitor tells you get rid of the card, which you shuffle back into the deck and redraw.
      If you lose your influence card because you were assassinated or called out, then you place it face up on the table to reveal what your card was. That way as the rounds go on, it's easier to start seeing who is isn't who they say they are, and who is. It's like poker where they reveal their hand, except that they are still in the game, and you use that information to figure out who is bluffing, who bluffed before and they were lying.. And so on.
      It becomes so much more of a brutal and calculating game. I love coup. I play board games with a group of friends, and we play this game all the time, normally as either a starter or casual game in between board games, before we start one of our more longer board games like agricola or caverna... XD

    When I played this game, another player tried to assassinate me. Someone else claimed earlier that they had a contessa, so I made a deal with them to block my assassination in exchange for couping a player of their choice. They agreed, blocked the attack, were called out by the assassin player. Turns out they didn't have a contessa, so they lost that card. Assassin player then preceeded to try to kill my card, but I informed them that I was blocking it with my contessa. The called me out, I revealed I was telling the truth. Couped them the next turn and killed the guy who lied to help me with the assassin I drew to replace my contessa I was forced to show, winning the game and losing my friends at the same time. This game as a TV show
    Brennan - Evil King, the main antagonist for Season 1, until being ganged up on in the finale
    Brian - Brennan's slimy assistant trying to eventually betray him, but gets executed before he can make a move in the episode before the Season 1 finale
    Simone - Empress who was too powerful for her own good and got assassinated, the protagonist until she meets her end at the conclusion of Season 2, at which point the 3 morally grey characters take over
    Pat - Strategic warrior with a small militia, gets by through bluffing, pretends to have an army as one last-ditch gambit, but Jenna sees through his lies right before the Season 3 finale and destroys him
    Karen - Queen who serves as the main antagonist of Season 3, allies with Pat and waits out the fighting while amassing an army
    Jenna - Femme Fatale who rises to power through her successes, protagonist of Season 3 who attacks Karen before she can prepare her armies and wins the war

    They didn't play it wrong since they had a ton of fun and it was super entertaining, but they made several very large rules mistakes (or house ruled things they didn't mention) but for anyone watching this with the idea of learning how to play:
    1. Contessa cannot block assassinations against other players, only when the person targeted claims to have a Contessa
    2. When you "lose influence" either by being caught lying or being the target of an assassination/coup you flip over the card in front of you. It does not get shuffled back into the deck. This makes more information available as the game goes on.

    I love that you guys are playing one of my favorite games. 2 quick clarifications (that don’t matter, because they had fun playing)
    1) contessa cannot block an assassination when you’re not the target
    2) when you lose an influence, you place the card face up (you don’t shuffle the card back into the deck)
    Last note: Pat’s best move in that last bit would’ve been to just take 1 coin and (if all other players adopted a similar strategy) he wouldn’t be the first to 10 coins and thus wouldn’t be the first forced to coup

    • @christiangarza8122

      Though in my opinion the Contessa house rule could make the game a lot more fun and interesting.

      Also, if they call you out on being an assassin, and you are not one, you still have to pay the 3 coins. Paying resolves first.

    • @killer998
      @killer998 4 года назад +28

      Amina This is technically incorrect. Paying three coins is part of the action as assassin, when proved you don’t have the assassin, you can’t actually perform the action. Thus getting the 3 coins back. It says this in the rule book under challenges. “If an action is successfully challenged the entire action fails, and any coins paid as the cost of the action are returned to the player”.

      Also am I missing a rule because jenna didn't get rid of a card when she was wrong about Brian not having a contesa meaning she would have lost when she called out our main duke.

    • @emilycarbone6604
      @emilycarbone6604 3 года назад +4

      @@Shadow-gc6le While Jenna was the one to point on camera, Karen was the one to formally accuse Brian, so she is the one who lost a card.

  • @jessical4866
    @jessical4866 4 года назад +27

    Jenna did really well with her Contessa. She stayed out of the drama, didn’t try to get greedy and antagonize any Dukes. Because her Contessa had basically zero financial or military ability other than protection, she kept her head down and made it so she couldn’t be assassinated.

    • @Silphanis
      @Silphanis 3 года назад +6

      Fully agree. I played this with some classmates a few weeks ago and won with an assassin and a contessa, economically a terrible hand, just by laying low.

  • @MagyarGaben
    @MagyarGaben Год назад +17

    And once again, Brennan was right. Personal emotion must fall to realpolitic. Pat took out Simone with fewer coins as opposed to Jenna with more because his decision was guided by emotions rather than rationale, and this dug his own grave.

    For those considering picking this up, a few rules notes:
    1) When you lose an influence card, you flip it face up in front of you for the rest of the game instead of shuffling it back into the deck (though the way they play could make for an interesting house rule, it becomes harder to keep track of information that way).
    2) When a player is attacked (assassin or captain), no other player may use counter abilities on their behalf (contessa, ambassador, captain), though anyone may challenge the attacker (you can always challenge any claim, no matter who’s doing it or why). This is not balanced to be a game of alliances, it is a game of strict self interest combined with the occasional spite call (Simone).
    None of this is to say I found the video any less fun, but it always helps to point out errors in play when missing them can lead to a less than optimal experience for someone unfamiliar with the game.

      Thanks for explaining! I'm not sure if I'd like it better with or without the "using defensive abilities for others".
      Also, shouldn't Jenna have lost a card after 11:28 when she called out Brian's Contessa?
