@@ZekkoFootball I think where Southgate is right is that we have two number 8s Mainoo and Rice but no number 6 (Georginio, Rodri, Krus, Modric or as Southgate has pined for Kalvin Phillips). Wharton however is an excellent number 6 he’s very comfortable on the ball, plays progressive passes and even has 3 assists in 16 starts for Palace. The problem Southgate has is that Rice is very influential in the squad, critically acclaimed in the media and has developed relationships playing in the tournament. He’s also not done anything ‘wrong’ so there is no need to drop him. However if England want to play possession based football you have to play people who are good on the ball and can find a pass. I’m always shocked how good other nations are in close quarters and avoiding being tackled one on one compared to England. You’d have to ask Arsenal fans but I think Wharton would suit the team far better than Rice. I just don’t see how ill he gets minutes in this team under Southgate barring injury.

Here are 3 systems that offer potentially promising changes for England:-
    1. 4-1-2-3: Here Foden and Bellingham play in the (8/10) half positions and Gordon comes in on the LW. Palmer probably fits this better than Saka on the right but that's not a big deal. This system sacrifices a defensive player so it would require England to play something like Spain and press.
    2. 3-3-3-1: This is I fear where England made their biggest blunder in the first 2 games. Playing Trent allows for great flexibility and I expected England to line up with him in a RWB spot, at least with the ball, rather than permanently in central midfield. This system minimises the issue of Trippier's lack of a left foot without forcing him or Foden to sit out on the left. Plus of course, as a WB it would be possible to play a more attacking-minded player there such as Eze. If you want to see what is possible when Trent takes up this RWB spot, replay the last attack of the first half from the Denmark game. It was one of the better moves England have produced this tournament but inexplicably has not been employed since.
    3. 4-2-3-1: What I want to highlight here is that the KO phase offers the ability to have designated starters and finishers, with the starters having the ability to play at 100% as they know they will come off after 55-60 minutes. My idea here is to start with Foden at 10 and Watkins at CF, probably in combination with Gordon and Palmer in the wide spots, then bring on Kane (for Watkins), Jude (for Foden) and Saka (for Palmer), all good penalty takers, automatically later on. The last 2 (+1) subs would then be available for covering injuries and tactical changes. If the coach is certain that 4-2-3-1 is the right way, and it does seem that Gareth is enamoured with this system, then I think this is the way to go, building a proper team for this shape rather than the current set of concessions that have not really worked.

I like how the weaknesses of England's 4-2-3-1 were well analysed here.
I would suggest two approaches for England.
The first being your 3-4-3 which I can agree with. Though I would put Ivan Toney as the lone central striker. Kane will replace Foden as the one dropping into space or attacking the box. Bellingham will stay.
Alternatively, if Southgate is adamant about the 4-2-3-1, then we need to shift personnel.
Anthony Gordon comes in on the left of the attack to provide attacking width. Kane in the centre. Saka out wide right..
Foden plays just behind Kane as the 10. Rice and Bellingham as the 6 and 8.

Think 3-4-3 should be Plan B. Plan A should be a 3-5-2, with a Kane/Watkins partnership to start and bringing Toney as a sub. Brentford’s most common formation is a 3-5-2, so Toney should be an excellent target man suited for this system.
You can then have Rice and Mainoo play more of a CDM with Bellingham (or Foden) as the ACM/CM option. England have a large abundance of wingback options with Saka, TAA, Gordon, Eze imo.
The 3-5-2 is a good system where you have enough defenders/midfielders back that wouldn’t likely be caught out of position. Think the 3-4-3 will be a slight risk if there’s an unnecessary attacker not willing to drop back.

Love the setup and approach that England should take going forward. I'd personally start with Gordon. Saka seems tired and found out in his play from 60mins (he can't get passed someone after 60 mins). Gordon will have pace and energy in abundance with Saka being a great sub option. Then I would start Watkins or Toney instead of Kane. I think Kane will just be congested in that midfield and not offer anything in the build up. Watkins or Toney will stretch with their runs and offer passing opportunities for Foden or Bellingham. I'd bring Kane on later on in the game for Foden.

The teams that are enjoying most success are those who are playing with actual width and players who are able to take on their man and thus disrupt man for man marking systems. Can’t help but feel Grealish would have been great at this but in his absence we have Saka, Palmer and Gordon. If they are utilised correctly, their direct threat will create space for the likes of Foden, Bellingham and Kane

If you play 3 at the back then surely Watkins has to start next to Kane. If you play Foden and Bellingham both as 10s they will just stand on top of each other. We know Kane will drop deep because he can’t help himself so at least we still have someone running in behind. This will also play to Trent’s strengths at RB as he will have someone making runs and use his passing.

3-2-3-1-1. Slightly different to the 3-4-3.
The difference it allows an overload through the midfield with true wingers on both sides.
Then the spine of Bell, Foden and Kane can push through rotate and have runners at speed, with Kane with the through ball.

None of the England players play 3 at the back for clubs, so a huge risk. England still have xG-wise the best defence in the tournament, so changing system risks throwing that away. Foden didn't deliver at CAM in the qualifiers and hasn't delivered at LW. England's best performances pre-tournament were with Rashford LW. Gordon is the most similar player to Rashford, so has to be given a shot. I also think Palmer deserves a shot in his best position (CAM), and bring Bellingham deeper where he can use the fact he has the best long pass% of any England player. Saka looks tired, so argument to give Bowen a start as well.

I'm not having Switzerland are 'the real deal'. Making them out to be a prime Italy or something. I saw them against Scotland, they were bang average and easily beatable if Scotland had a proper striker. England can't play any worse and they're still winning. England will match them in formation this time round. Switzerland like to press which will create loads of space for England up top.

An argument for Trent at right back to fire some long balls to bypass the midfield?
Eze or Gordon on the left to receive long diagonals or run beyond the high line.

Absolutely, this is what I would have done if I’d have stuck with the 4 at the back. But with the midfield problems that Switzerland pose, I think the change to the 3 is necessary for this match.
Great idea though, thanks for watching!

@@ZekkoFootball disclosure, I'm a palace fan. What I see from the Swiss and what you are proposing is effectively how Glasner has us playing.
3 at the back, two wing backs, two combative CM in Wharton(!!!!) and Hughes, then Eze and Olise to attack the channels or cut inside at will with an big athletic striker up top.
High press all the way. Now, if only Mitchell was taken, a dynamic and athletic England Xi would be quite interesting:
      Henderson
      Walker Stones Guehi
      Trent Mitchell
      Rice Wharton
      Saka Eze
      Watkins
Clearly, this doesn't work if you must have Bellingham, Kane or Foden in it, but in terms of 'fixing' the left hand side, that would be exciting from a Palace fan's perspective.
More realistically, and considering Southgate's stubbornness.
      5-3-2/3-5-2
      Pickford
      Walker Stone Gomez
      Trent Saka
      Rice
      Bellingham Mainoo
      Watkins Kane

I’ve put £100 on Switzerland winning. England couldn’t even beat Italy at Wembley Switzerland beat Italy the other day 2-0! England have no chance with Southgate ; zero!
