If the XA lets you release the shutter while it is closed, it must be broken. The XA has a switch that actually turns the camera kind of "on" only when the cover is opened, which also prevents the batteries being drained when closed.
Big fan of the XA, but again the hair-trigger on the shutter release ensured the camera spent more time on my shelf than in the camera bag. I ended up giving mine away as a part of the Emulsive Secret Santa gift exchange and the new owner loves it! Great review of the XA!
I have one and don't use it a ton, as I don't really love rangefinders as much ...yet? I'm working on that. It's ace for when you need something small for travel, or as you have tried, daily carry. You can zone focus it if you prefer, saves fiddling with the focus lever. I have also tried and liked having a blue gel filter over the viewfinder; it increases the contrast with the RF patch and makes it pretty easy to see when you have focus set. Caveats are that I never use flash, so the A11 you have on there is never on mine, making it smaller. I also have not shot a ton of stuff at even iso 800, let alone above that. If you wanted, you can try something like the XA4. This his a wider lens (might be a con depending on how you shoot), but I think the aperture is a bit wider, and the iso goes up higher. It is not an RF cam; where the aperture switch is on your camera is a distance switch on this one. It also has a macro mode which is pretty sweet. That lens is amazing. It's prone to electronic errors at this point though...womp womp. GL with the search
Really loved the photograph of the skater at the start, however you’ve got to get into LR/PS and remove the hairs from the scans on some of your images!!
These are some other great options but they are literally point and shoot everything is auto. Canon Autoboy 3 / Canon Sure Shot Supreme -- Focal length 38mm F2.8 Olympus Mju I / Olympus Infinity Stylus -- Focal length 35mm F3.5 Olympus Mju II / Olympus Epic -- Focal length 35mm F2.8 Yashica T4 or T5 -- Focal length 35mm F3.5
I haven't tried it myself but @Lucy Lumen really likes the Nikon L35AF. Don't know if you would care for the build quality but it's autofocus and has a pretty good lens and built in flash.
I would try another Olympus called the Olympus Stylus Epic with the fixed 35 2.8 Zeiss. There is a European version of this camera as well but the important thing is to get the 2.8 fixed lens.....not the zoom versions. I bought one of these when you could buy them in a camera store years ago. I got tired of carrying my Nikons around all the time and was looking for a sharp lens on a compact. This was it. I went through two of them and now have a third which I still use. This is an automatic camera and the only thing I would change on it is the flash comes on every time you open the camera. Easily turned off when you push the button.....just have to remember to do it. These cameras are now pricey on ebay. There is a reason though and that is becasue it is just a superb camera.
I've definitely lost shots on my XA, but it's out of 38 and not 36 like on motor cameras 😅 why would you not want an slr if that's what you like? Just get a small one like an om1 or a Pentax MX?
I've being shooting with the XA for about two years now on and off. It will only fire if the sliding door is moved over all the way. It's not my favourite camera either however it's the perfect camera for travel, hiking, grab'n'go and when you need to go to the fancy black tie event etc.. I did a video on XA vs Rollei vs Autoboy. ruclips.net/video/lXCGG3IQrPI/видео.html I still love the Autoboy for the shear fun and easy of use.
Accidentally tripping the shutter button is eliminated if you don’t advance the film until you are ready to shoot.

have you tried the Richoh 500G?
Try the Pentax Z-1, if you can find one.
Great captures Joan, I love how that little XA renders photos. You've done a great job!!

I admit i was just lazy 😅
Try the Olympus OM-2S, OM-1. Another similar one is Pentax MX. Compact, bright viewfinder and lightweight.
How does the OM1 compare size wise to a Minolta XD? Thanks.

Canon Autoboy 3 / Canon Sure Shot Supreme -- Focal length 38mm F2.8
Olympus Mju I / Olympus Infinity Stylus -- Focal length 35mm F3.5
Olympus Mju II / Olympus Epic -- Focal length 35mm F2.8
Yashica T4 or T5 -- Focal length 35mm F3.5
Canon Sureshot Sleek also known as Prima Mini II, small and definately pocket size, 32mm fixed focal length f3.5. Lovely image quality.
I use a Canon Demi it’s a little on the different side since it’s half frame but it’s a neat lil thing !

My friend Rich that you met was using this in New York lol super portable
Rollei 35s is my every day. Check it out! Fun, quirky, and pocketable 40mm 2.8
scale focus ok for medium to long distance but not 5 feet and closer. especially at anything wider than f5.6
If you like the SLR feel, why don’t you just use an SLR?
Looking for something lighter and smaller.

great camra but very expensive due to so many vids and articles on it. The regular Sylus is a nice camera too but much cheapter.

You want something more durable and the camera was sold in the late 1970s, haha hahaha
