I’ve been shooting this camera since the ‘80s (yeah, I’m old). I brought it with me for two months in England and shot slide film. I carried it in a pocket and brought it everywhere. Some of the images it captured are gorgeous. This little camera may look like a toy or a gimmick, but it’s a proper rangefinder. Brilliant camera.
I'll never not take an opportunity to tell the world that I got my XA for about $2.50 at a garage sale. I saw a chunky point-n-shoot on the table and asked them, "do you have any other cameras, stashed away somewhere?" And sure enough, they did. Quite the collection, I might add. But the Olympus XA was the crown gem; and you're 100% spot-on about it, here.
@@SVProductionsHD It can be a point and shoot. In fact, Maitani designed it so that it could be used in this way. I mean no one is shooting this at f16 everywhere... but like I wrote, it was designed to be shot f5.6 @ 3m focus. Open the front and it's good to go.
@@ChinaCameraStyle yes you can "point and shoot" with it but as I said before, the title makes it seem as if this camera is a point and shoot, not a rangefinder.
crazy, i just took mine out shooting today. I love this camera so much that I bought a second one!! i refurbished my light seals and installed a blue ctb filter to increase the rangefinder patch contrast. it’s truly an engineering marvel from a 40-year-old design
As I look back with what I know now, I wish I'd had a XA or XA2 when I was at school and uni, years ago. I can only imagine the great memories i could have captured back then.
Hi 👋 how are you doing I just got Olympus xa2 but I will be getting a Olympus XA soon, So these cameras are the best ones to get I'm just learning photography for the first time in 20 years I'm going to have fun with it
My favorite point and shoot! So underrated because people don't like the rangefinder patch but I have never had a problem with the camera. Love it and carry mine everywhere I go. #OlympianHere
One cool trick to making the focusing patch better on this guy. Put a small rectangle of gaffers tape on the front center of the viewfinder glass. It definitely helps with focusing on this little gem
I had one and used it for a while ( actually I've tried the whole XA range ) but I never liked that shutter button. I ended up selling it and I've replaced it with the lomo lca, slightly different style in that it's a zone focus but for a camera for your coat pocket it's definitely my preferred option. Still love the olympus film cameras though, I have the 35 rc and the ee s, both have awesome lenses.
These are deffo fun lil snappers. The manual focus is super nice, and the ability to choose aperture is fire!! I found a red xa3 for super cheap which reminded me how much I like the form factor of these cameras so much. Heck I even shot my own wedding snaps on it haha!
My girl just got this from London with the flash. But the bad part was that she threw away the case that came with it lmao. Great video as always my dude!
Man! Now the price just skyrocketed for this camera because of your praise!!!! :-) Seriously -- it does command a premium anymore in the used market -- selling at probably more than it originally sold for, but many others have praised it as well. Sigh, I guess that I'll have to keep my eye out now for a good deal on one to add to my collection (of tons of vintage cameras that I can't afford anymore, can't afford the film/developing or the time to use them all!!!). Thanks though -- love your photos (where/how do you scan them?)!
My middle aged eyes don’t do as well with that little rangefinder patch these days, but the XA is a sweet camera. I use the XA2 more now, but the whole XA series rocks. Quality vid as always!
same thing ia happening to me with my kodak retina 1a i don't really like the focus mecanismn and the viewer but the size the lens and the sound are perfect
totally agree! you forgot to mention the very nice 4 stripes aperture star and the good against the light shooting capability. i love my xa and my xa3 (first cam) :)
Great little camera, love mine. Only problem with mine is that I find it overexposes about 2 stops. Most my film I shoot with it is 400 iso, so I just set the camera to 800iso and overexpose one stop. Super sharp lens for a small package though.
Good video. Thanks. I bought one a few months ago. Excellent small film camera. And you are right about the flash - which is also pretty useless. But I have to say it is beautifully designed in every sense and a great tool to use.
I love my XA except recently it seems to be underexposing everything. The fact that the shutter speed needle in the rangefinder window is not actually coupled to the shutter is also odd
i have used this camera a long time, it was a new camera at that time ! i loved it, also because of it shutter speed, it can be open for 10 seconds ! so, great night shoots ! i had no problems with it's focus system, so most of the time good pictures ! i also used a Praktica LTL3 mirorreflex camera, you gonna like that camera too.
Wow! Cool camera, 1st time I saw an external flash placed on the side! sweetly unique! ... In advance Jonathan I want to congratulate you on your 50k mark! your deserve that! C'mon people! let's make this happen!
far enough to avoid red-eye! I came here to see if anyone was still uses these - this is the one 35mm camera I still own, got it used from a local camera shop in 1992, and it came with me everywhere for 10 years!
I know the features are different but how would you compare the image quality of the XA to the Minolta Himatic AF2? I’m undecided on which way I want to go for now.
The XA was great for outside work, but terrible for low light or high contrast light work. Had one for close to a year, but it’s dependance on a meter made me leave it for a Yashica T4 (which I found at a thrift store and made the smart decision to sell of course)
I've got the XA, rollei 35 and canonet ql17Giii. All 3 small(canonet biggest but still small for its capability) and I love all of them! The XA shutter is veryx very sensitive so I'll have to get to know that/be more careful but still, fits right in my pocket together with my wallet(always empty thanks to film XD)
I still have my Oly XA and side flash module, and an Oly 35 RC. But my favourite is Olympus Stylus Epic... no custom controls like the XA and 35 RC... but sits in your pocket and has fast lens.... was travel companion for years.... now you need to dish out $600-$900 for something that did the work for $200.
Definitely up there with the greats, so pocketable!!! I’m always caring one on me or alternatively the little Minox G series that is pretty much the same but a bit smaller
The XA is one of my favorites I have 5 of them even when I shoot my Leica with a 50mm summilux I carry my XA for that 35mm lens. Keep up the good work bro 👍
The original XA is underrated and the best version. Too underrated. It’s the same lens in the Mju ii Certainly buy and keep the flash attached, get the A11, it’s the smallest one and keeps it pocketable compared to the A16
Could you maybe do a video on lenses and lens compatibility? I just got my first slr (Minolta Maxxum 7000!) and it’s really hard to find people talking about lenses, especially budget ones
Hey man, my name is Justin. I’m really tryna really get serious abt film photography but I’ve been a bit discouraged by the film developing process. I’ve got a the chemicals and even bought a scanner and everything but and I’m stuck on the film developing. Pls help me out man
Thanks man, this video very encourage me to using that camera (olympus xa) again. At the first try i think wrong buy, but with your video make me confidence with this camera. 😬😂😬😮
I hate how people call the Olympus XA very sharp. Yes it is reasonably sharp. But It is no where near as sharp as a Nikon 50mm f1.2 ais or 85mm f1.4 ais prime lens.
I think you were right the first time. The lens is not sharp by any objective standard, shown by its photos and by the test reports made when it first came out. It is a snaphoto camera, good for its intended use. A "leica in your pocket"? What you smoken'?
I have the XA2 and love the little thing. Got wonderful reviews too. The one I thrift came with the A11 flash. All for like, 5.99. Shot some really old film and they all came out very well. Highly recommend the little shooters.

For 8 bucks, i'm happy ^^
The difference in Audio and editing now compared to the video from 2 years is drastic. Keep up the good work!
The XA isn't a point and shoot fam, it's a rangefinder
f5.6 focus @3m it can be faster than any point and shoot

I've learned how to take a photo with preset zone focusing at first with this camera. Set 3m and F5.6 then blind shoot.
I just got one for $60 last month, and it’s incredible. Best purchase I’ve ever made.

Just read film from Kodak has an increase of 5% in units sold. Love this channel, such an inspiration, keep it up
Glad I picked one of these up already, I can expect prices to be shooting up soon, lol
markothy would you believe me if I told you they were worth max $75 for one in great condition with flash 3 years ago?

XAs are great. My profile picture was shot on one. I'd love an XA4 for the 28mm lens, but eBay prices are just a bit silly.
My middle aged eyes don’t do as well with that little rangefinder patch these days, but the XA is a sweet camera. I use the XA2 more now, but the whole XA series rocks. Quality vid as always!
theoldcameraguy absolutely!! The only XA I didn’t find too pleasent has to be the XA1. I even forgot to mention it in the video 😂
KingJvpes Yeah, the XA1 is definitely more limited. The one thing that’s good about it is that it doesn’t need a battery.
Respect for putting up another video after changing your mind, I picked up this camera a month ago and its lens really is that great.
Might grab one do you have shots with it?
I have the XA3 and I love it! Different focusing system and lens than the XA but the form factor is great and perfect for street photography.
Jack Flower love that camera!
I got rid of my XA for some quick cash and honestly I should have just been broke for like a week and kept the camera haha. I miss it so much

You can modify the ISO setting. I have modified more than one so that the ISO ratings are all one step up '50 - 1600'
how does that work?
I put tape over the DX reader on mine. So I can set whatever iso value I want
