I was managing a camera store when the XA first came out and was able to get both it and the A16 flash at an employee discount. It is a fun little camera, but I prefer my Rollei 35S as an all around carry camera. Very good video!

Excellent review mate, great channel. I got one for around £4 sadly shutter didn't work, its gone in for repair estimated cost £50 if I can get it done for that happy days, these things are fetching between £200-£250 in UK in perfect condition. BTW watched your channel originally because you did a great review of the lab box, managed to develop 2 rolls now, so easy thanks again, keep em coming :) Tim

Great video as always man! Especially love that Diner pic. I don’t know how it keeps happening but just a few days ago a friend of mine gifted me an Agfa Optima From the 60s that he found for like 10€. And it still has some Mistery film in it

Unpopular opinion but I really don' t like this camera. I've had mine for over a year now and cannot get on using it. The camera is so inconvenient to use due to the small size and the rangefinder is so dim it's almost impossible to focus. I totally understand the hype as it's a tiny rangefinder but it's more I'd rather just carry a larger camera like my QL17 and have a pleasant experience than use the XA. I do however own the XA3 and it's honestly one of my favourite cameras ever so... Cheers for the review Caleb and apologies for the rant!
What marks them apart for you, isnt the body pretty similar
@@MrWispish The XA3 is a zone focusing camera, not a rangefinder so it means I can just set the focus distance and shoot away. I find the range finder focusing system waaaay too small to use since the lever is tiny and everything is so close together! Hope that helps :)

I’ve definitely want to try the QL17 sometime! I do have a few zone focus cameras and are not that fond of them but that’s me. Thanks for the input I dig ☺️
@@MrWispish Are you kidding??? What they have in common is 35mm film and a viewfinder/rangefinder. The biggest difference is between the lenses. The Canon QL17 GIII has a 40mm 1.7 lens which with the lens on the Olympus RD is probably the best lens ever mounted to a fixed lens 35mm camera. The lens on the XA is probably the worst in the same type of camera. The QL17 gives both auto and manual exposure control. XA is auto only. QL!7 view/rangefinder - clear and crisp; easy to use. XA so dim and near-impossible use that it may as well not be there. QL17 - solid metal body; durable. XA - all plastic body; easy to break and electronic which fail. The later XA versions which drop the rangefinder and the very weird lens design are easier to use and give a better image.

Great camera, I have it too. Your exposures are consistently 1/2 to 1 whole stop over-exposed though - you need to set your ISO to a higher number to fool your camera into lowering the exposure.
Yeah. I know these were not idea now looking back … it’s been a while but maybe I should use the camera again
@@BadFlashes Good shots - just set the ISO around 100 HIGHER than what you would normally set it at (I know that's counter intuitive, but you want to fool your camera into thinking the film is faster, thus lowering the exposure). Guarantee your shots will be perfect!

It's a perfect street film cam. I have the XA and the XA3, XA is better. I'm aways down in Chinatown LA with XA, and other cams. Your photos and video looks so familiar, lol.

That city you live in... is it based on the one in GTA? (Love the XA, one of my favourite cameras. The lens is spectacular.)(By which I mean very good. I thought about buying one of these from an antiques store, but the shutter was stuck and the previous owner had scratched their name, phone number, and address on it. Besides I love my Konica Auto S2 Rangefinder more. At least you can take pictures of Chinatown without people getting in your shot.

What do you mean by that Chinatown thing and the Konica? I have a XA and a XA2, which I prefere to XA with the quite fiddly to operate rangefinde. Also have a Konica Auto S 1.6 since a few weeks. Great Camera [in quality AND size (a massiv rock of metal) 😄 ] with the awesome razor sharp and contrasty HEXANON lens, but in comparision of weight and size to the XA/XA2 not easy to slip in your pocket.
If I would want a small and compact analog 35mm Kamera, I would choose this one (I actually have one). But I don't shoot 35mm anymore in favor of medium and large format, so I have no use for such a camera and its only sitting on its shelf besides the other four 35mm Kameras I keep for nostalgic reasons (Olympus OM-1, Olympus O-Product, Werra 4 and Exakta Varex IIb).

Wow. Your XA looks so clean and snappy compared to mine. Really need to send mine if for a CLA. Also Make sure you are using Silver Oxide batteries. They stabile voltage a lot longer than Alkaline and the meter will be more accurate.
Also, on your Ektar roll. Looks like you got some Grain Reticulation. Not sure why in this case but thought you ought to know.
I opened my 2 XAs thanks to a RUclips tuto, and very carefully cleaned the viewfinders and rangefinders. So much better now! On one of them the patch was less visible, now they are both like new! 🙂

I only put my second roll of film through the XA I bought over a year ago, because I was testing a lot of others for sale. This one I intended to keep. But anyway… I do not recommend this camera for psychedelic street walking… it’s very small and fiddly to see what is what on the tiny unit, and it is abysmally difficult to focus manually when your eyes are rolling around and there are hundreds of images to try and square up in the small viewfinder. So how those photos end up looking will be quite amusing I think.
Anyway I still might have to sell it to pay bills which sucks… why the hell did I look at videos for it because they all just make me want to keep it :(

The XA has one of the largest fanboy followings of any camera. For those who actually try to use it as their primary camera, the reality of its many shortcomings dawns quickly. One interesting historical feature of the camera is that a few years after being discontinued, its used price at around $50 inflated to nearly $200 with the same sort of excessive comments it tends to get these days. Used dealers were paying $150 to resell in the US and Japan for $250. After 2 years, reality arrived and the market price fell back to about $75, leaving one of the biggest market losses ever suffered by the used camera industry. I've no idea what the market price is today, but IMO paying more than $50 is foolish. That's what I paid for mine with case and flash. I never use it because the lens isn't good for more than shapshot prints and scanned computer images, and I don't use either. If you think the XA is a great camera, put your money where your mouth is, say a couple of hundred.
