  • I love these cameras. only recently did I realize they are very similar, only a few years apart. Which one truly holds up the best? Is the Stylus an upgrade to the XA? I dunno, Watch to find out!

    I love my XA but I was honestly a little surprised to see that the XA was noticeably sharper than the Stylus.
    I've said this many times, but I wish we could get a modern re-interpretation of the XA. Tiny 35mm rangefinder with a 35mm lens and aperture priority. It's the perfect combination of convenience and control, and there are so few cameras like it.

    I love these Olympus Stylus cameras beyond belief. My dad picked up quite a few of these for practically nothing back in the mid-00s, this specific model included, and gave them to me when I was in college a few years back. In the last five or six years, I have put so many rolls through these things and to see them so slept on compared to the Contax or Yashica p&s systems is honestly a crime. Gotta love seeing someone show one off with such precious memories attached. I'll always carry one of these on me everywhere I go.
    That said if one of these cameras existed where I didn't need to turn the flash off every single time I turned it on, I would die.

    Appreciate the video! I bought an XA, MJU zoom 115 and a Fujifilm DL-270 at a local thrift for practically pennies to take with me to Japan in a couple months. Looking at the images on Lomography's site blew me away how nice the images were on the XA and MJU. Never shot with such a compact camera and both have surpassed my expectations. The XA just feels so good to shoot with.

    I've owned an XA, an XA2 and an XA1, and the XA2 is the one I keep using the most, its zone focusing is definitely easier to use than the XA's rangefinder and its light meter is excellent. I think the lens on the XA2 is as sharp or sharper than the XA's, at least in abundant light. The XA1 has a fixed focus lens and only two ISO settings but the pictures it makes are way better than you would expect.

    Great comparison, I couldn’t decide between the 2 and I bought the mju instead. After seeing these photos the XA looks a bit sharper.

    What is sort of crazy about the Olympus cameras like these are the lenses are praised but are usually triplets or tessar designs. Just simple, no frills type of lenses that are meant to get the job done (minus the stylus zoom cameras that have more elements). Like, $500 for an Olympus MJU II is bananas considering you get a shit ton more with a $50 Nikkormat and a 50mm lens. I found my original MJU I for $8 and it's nice but it just has a triplet lens that is nice bit not great. The one thing that is crazy is the 100 autofocus points but I dont enjoy using it all of the time. Honestly, it's my "dog walking" camera lol Really interesting video though! Appreciate the content and forget the haters. Also, the real question is, is heavy whipping cream kosher in coffee :)

    I think those light leaks often come from the crack around the barrel of the lens. the rubber seal there and wear out over time.

    • @ThePhotoDept
      @ThePhotoDept  2 года назад

      I’ve heard that happens in the Yashica t4 but never heard of that affecting the Olympus cameras. I need to look into that.

    The only problem with those zoom Stylus cameras is if you bump the flash the camera just shuts down. And the flash pops up right where you'd put your hand. But love the quality for what it is and how easy that clam shell design slides into a pocket.

    When talking about the Olympus 35mm f2.8 no one ever mentions the AF1. World's first all weather point and shoot introduced in 1986, has the same lens as the Mju2 and you can find them for next to nothing because they don't have the fashionable good looks of the Mju or the XA. You could almost call it the missing link in the evolution of those 2 cameras.
    Anyway love your videos. Cheers from Australia.

    I thought you said 4.99 and immediately thought that’s a great price but it’s 499. It’s crazy how the compact cameras/ point and shoots were seen as obsolete and now they have become mainstream again due to Instagram culture.
