Me, too. I would like to see the turbocharged car taken to Nitro Dann to let him work his magic. I would like to see the evaluation of performance with the tune maximizing torque at the driveline limit, as Nitro Dann does.

+Mighty Car Mods i think you guys should do some little mods to the supercharged miata to even up the power and then go to the drag strip or race track cheers :)
Since the cars have almost equal power and they are the same apart from that top speed (which is limited by gearing) should be the same. I don't think it would prove anything.
And rev limiter.... :)
Second car on the courses was faster, maybe they ran faster after learning the first time around.

Guys look centrifugal superchargers are really just belt driven turbos the real difference needs to be seen between a conventional turbo and a roots or twin screw supercharger.

Roots blowers are never going to match the efficiency of a turbocharger. They just suck too much power out of the crankshaft, OK for a drag car but fucked up for a street car.
stmounts I strongly disagree. A roots blower has much better low end and mid range which is ideal for a street car. You don't spend all your time at the top 10% of the rev range, so centrifugal is less desirable for the street.
@@Terruhcutta ...Sure, that would explain why 99% of street car manufacturers use turbos instead of Roots blowers, eh???
Truth is, turbos can be set up to provide full boost at low rpms and maintain that through the rev range via a wastegate. They are not always set up to come on at high rpm, only in race cars or after-market conversions by fan boys. So mid-range boost can be much higher.

Steve 30x Turbo will win at drag strip. Depends how tight the road course is. Turbo will will win at high speed with sweeping corners but supercharger will be advantageous in short technical corners.
They have the same suspension and tires, go to 9:33 and Marty says exactly that.

Considering the low boost levels I would have liked to see a roots or screw type of blower vs. the turbo since they can make boost much earlier in the RPM range.

I'd argue that some of difference in the motorkhana (autocross for the US peeps) times could have just been the difference in being the 2nd lap around the track no? more familiarity with the course definitely will change times.

T-WRX Definitely, they did the long course test right by switching which car each of them used first. For the short course though they messed up by both taking the same car first. It gave the supercharged car an advantage by having a practice run with the turbo car first. Of course they could have run the course several times each off camera but when doing a test you should still try to take as many variables out as possible. Still entertaining as hell though. good job MCM!

That was exactly what I was thinking while I was watching..
i think if you would have done the motor kahna one starting with the turbo car then the other starting with the supercharged car would have made for a better test given the lap you might have been learning the course. still good though mates, cheers.

Marties first lap in the turbocharged car was still clearly sloppier and Moogs there was only a tiny difference, I think that was more or less a tie. Maybe next time do it twice each and average it, even if you only show one of them? (I know youtube stats say viewers drop off after 10-15 minutes generally).

@Mighty Car Mods each has its benefits and we love both at Good-Win Racing. The Rotrex supercharger is, without a doubt, the easiest for folks to bolt on and survive full on track use. Is it as fast as a turbo in a straight line? No, but for the purists, the throttle response of the Rotrex is hard to beat. I've beat on mine relentlessly for almost 2 years now and couldn't be happier.
That flat 6 sitting there still has me drooling. I have an EZ36 in my tribecca with over 360,000 miles on it. Original motor it's TOUGH!!

Glimpses of the Green Re-bought 180 there on the back of the track on a trailer gives us hope to see it shine again. Awesome video and quite happy with the results.

Mk2 bumper is best looking but 2.5's are more functional due to seats fog lights etc. I've had both.
Are you guys purposefully leaving out POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT SUPERCHARGERS? You're using a centrifugal supercharger. If you wanted to test a PROPER supercharger, you should have done a positive displacement supercharger (Eaton or Twin Screw). The centrifugal superchargers are almost a hybrid between a supercharger and turbo.
The positive displacement (PD) supercharger is the best type of supercharger. That is why ALL car manufacturers that make supercharged cars use them, NOT centrifugal superchargers. PD superchargers make FULL BOOST as low as 1800rpm, and continue to make it to redline. And they have instant throttle response. In a turbo car, if you're off the throttle at 4000rpm, then jump back on throttle, you have to wait to build boost. In a PD supercharged car, the boost hits the instant you hit the throttle.
I understand there may not have been a PD supercharger available for the Miata, but I do have to say this comparison (which I still loved) is like playing a professional football team against a college team.
I know what you mean, and there are supercharger kits with Eaton type superchargers for the Miata. Fast Forward makes one, for instance. The TVS900.
I would imagine the same could be said for turbo tech tho so perhaps the anology is just using a white ball or a red ball

U can have 3 turbos on your car, that covers all the power band, or you can twincharger. why choose one system when you can have both? there are even cars that spin the turbo electronically first.

These videos have been so interesting. I know that more trials plus different drivers etc could change the results, but coming from a perspective of a driver that is decent but not a professional, this really says a lot about the 2 types of boost. On a further note, speaking as some one who is newly into cars, I'd say that working on and learning with the supercharger is easier on entry level. Very cool that you guys are doing this!

It'd bolster your motor khana test if you alternate which vehicle the driver drives first. For example, Marty drives the turbo miata first and then the supercharged; Moog drives the supercharged miata first then drives the turbo miata next

Did you guys do some practice runs on the course before you did your timed laps? You always started with the Turbocharged MX-5 on each of the sessions. I'd hate to think that the reason you were quicker on the Supercharged MX-5 is due to familiarity with the track.
These guy are notorious for terrible experimentation practices. Never involves a control, and like you said, they started with the same car twice. Never ran averages.

I was thinking the same thing. There are some serious methodological flaws in their experiments. In the motorkhana tests, the car that went 2nd won every time; they should've noticed something was up when in the long course the turbo beat the super then the super beat the turbo... I guess they did kind of mention this though, but they really only mentioned this in passed.

Cool video! Your results are similar to my liking with control ability. I want to supercharge my 93 Vdub Corrado, and I have heard putting turbo on the VR6 is wild powerful but out of control with front wheel drive! Thanks for the video!

Thank you for doing these tests on a track!! Amazing to see the differences in all tests. Goes to show that if you decide what you want to use your car for then build to suit, you'll get the best result rather than just doing what everyone says you should do. Personally, the way I drive I can see myself supercharging my Mazda 6 (except it costs more than the car itself). Can't wait to see the "spirited driving" real-world test. Also, yes we all saw the 180 sitting on the trailer, you sneaks!

You described exactly the feeling I have driving my turbo car. A larger engine/supercharger is way more fun day-to-day, just to have THAT feeling of pushing the car, instead of feeling the boost hit just before you reach the speed limit.

There was an issue with the harness that they fitted. It was right for Marty but not adjusted properly for Moog so they took down the video as it wasn't appropriate to show after they decided that it wasn't safe (as in not safe to wear an ill fitting harness). They felt it gave the wrong message.
They are redoing it and it will be back up once they have fixed the issue.

I think it's cool you guys have your own version of it there. In the US it's the equivalent of Autocross. Super cheap and by the end of the day you're a better driver. It's very forgiving for new drivers and really good camaraderie as well. I'd love to see more motorkhana/autocross type stuff.
id say choose a smaller turbo to spin up more quickly.
i still wonder how there is no aftermarket kit or ready to use turbo that is kept spinning or accelerated electronically somehow nowadays with so many cars turbocharged to safe fuel. Sounds like an alternative to twinscroll turbos.
Some ALS System that does not require to rest the engine at high rpm.
DxCBuG I know this is an old comment, but there are some VW Group cars (Audi SQ7 etc) that use a dedicated 48V system to power anti roll bars as well as spooling the turbo earlier

Luke Skywalker don't. They're extremely underpowered and actually quite slow, somewhat enjoyable drive. But honestly not worth it, I own an NA and wish I would've bought so many other cars. I regret it more than I like it.

I've got a 1.8 nb mx5 with an LSD, and 100% recommend. I paid £1000 for mine and have beaten it for 20k miles and it's never let me down. so much fun for the money. I don't regret buying it at all. they are slow in the straights but so much fun round corners and country roads. deffo recommend

Skid pads/pans are usually wet test tracks to test how a car handles lateral acceleration or how fast you're able to drive the car in its smallest radius without spinning out.

Vega-Expert he fails to mention the turbo A4 was a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder and the supercharged S4 was a 3.0 liter V6. Kinda apples to oranges.

The result was about what I expected for that style of Supercharger. Like a Turbo, they need to spin up for max power.
I have a twin screw supercharger and I hit max set boost much faster, about 2500 to 3000 RPM then it stays at max the rest of the RPM range. Much more power under the curve. There really is not a lot of room on those cars and with a V8 like I have the whole intake manifold is removed and replaced.

So is it just me or did everyone else think the Subie motor on the stand was an ej20 or 25 in previous episodes, and then in this episode it has magically grown 2 extra cylinders!

Also both manual so driver skill would come into it, shouldve had both autos to make the tests more accurate
