    I am so excited for you to see this garden tour! I had the privilege of walking alongside one of my good friends Bruce Duncan as he shared his gardening wisdom.
    Whether you are a beginner or have been gardening for years I believe you will get a lot of value from watching this video. With that said, sit back, relax and enjoy one of the prettiest gardens I have ever laid eyes on!
    Hi!
    My name is Justin and I have my managed my family's business (S&K Greenhouse) for the last 10 years! It is a local garden center in Shelby, NC that my family started around 25 years ago.
    We have a strong desire to discuss and teach gardening to the online community and welcome anyone who wants to learn. Though we have been involved in the plant world for decades we have found that there is always something to learn when it comes to gardening.
    Whether you are a master gardener or just starting out this channel is for you. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch our videos!

    I could have watched another hour, I know I’ll watch it at least once more to make notes of the conifer names. Please come back again in the winter and a follow up every year or in two years to see the growth would certainly be watched.
    It’s just so impressive, the thoughtful choice of conifers, the locations and companion plants, the concepts in the vegetable gardens, it’s like nothing I’ve ever seen and Bruce knows the names of everything. To plan a landscape from scratch is a challenge, he is obviously very good at this. His neighbours must be appreciative of the borrowed view, i certainly would be.

      Bette, you're very nice. Thank you. God created us all different but I'm not much of a planner. I kinda know in my head what I want and go with it. My gardens start small and then evolve around that. Flying by the seat of my pants in other words. In the future Justin plans to list the plant names on the screen as we talk about them. Appreciate you watching.

      @Bruce Duncan you have a wonderful property and your use and knowledge of such a wide variety of trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals is incredible. My wife and I discovered @S&K Greenhouse on RUclips about a year ago and have been making the trip from Concord, NC to see Justin and Alex ever since. They are awesome people and are so helpful and knowledgeable. I will definitely have to ask them about some of the amazing plants featured in your landscape on our next visit.

    This is my third time watching the tour of Bruce's property and I'm still noticing things I overlooked the last time. I'm trying to soak up every little drop of knowledge he dropped on us so I can apply it in my landscape this fall. • @bruceduncan1792
      @bruceduncan1792 2 года назад +2

      Thanks E. Yes, we do get snow some. two maybe three times. It usually disappears within a week. Once in a while we get a dumping of two feet or so and it may stick around longer. Winters in the Western Carolina foothills can go from sunny and high's in the 60's for a few days and then temps not getting out of the 20's a few days. And back and forth like that all season. By that time my beds will have cabbage, collards, carrots, kale, chard, and other cool weather crops. And our snows are usually not enough to kill them. We have more problems with ice and freezing rain than snow.

Please go back in the fall, early winter, and spring if Bruce is willing, to give us additional tours of his gorgeous landscape. I would love to see how it transitions and changes throughout the year.
    Bruce, I have a question, I'm curious about the shorter leaning fence, that is surrounding the outside of your vegetable garden. What is the purpose of the short fence? I will definitely rewatch this video, so I can pause it to write down plant names, then I can ask Google for the hardiness zones. I'm in zone 5a, so I'm guessing that quite a few of these shrubs and trees won't survive in my area, but the overall beauty of your landscape is truly amazing! ~Margie🤗💐🐝🦋

      Miss Thumbelina, you are very observant. I was having a problem with a ground hog climbing in and eating my plants. Believe it or not my oncologist and also a gardening friend, suggested it as he was having the same issue. Its the same concept as a renaissance fence, two fences with a walking space between. Except I leaned mine against the main fence, and, voila, it worked. Don't know the mind of a critter but it discouraged him. Thanks for watching.

      SLOMo, your words were gracious. Thank you!! Marigolds are not my favorite although I like all flowers. But I like them in the vegetable garden. As far as bulbs, what I have planted usually comes up in early Spring and then disappears. Crocus, Daffodils, Snow bells, tulips, etc. I have grown Gladiola's in the past but just don't anymore. They're bloom season is short and they're prone to droop and hang and just look kinda messy. Just my opinion. We plan to be back Fall and Winter.

      Thank you E Underwood. Wow. I love Cajun Country. It reminds me much of the low country in SC where I'm originally from. I would think Cypress and Cedar trees would do ok down there unless your soil stays wet. Then building it up and improving drainage would help. I would imagine spruce trees would struggle regardless of what you do. Based on what others in this industry have told me. Maybe you can find a local nursery with conifer knowledge that might recommend varieties for your area? Consider some Junipers too. There are varieties today that our grandparents never dreamed of. I've seen a few junipers offered now that look similar to spruces. Do you follow LSU football? what's up with hiring Brian Kelly. He's a good coach but just doesn't seem like the right fit. I guess we'll soon find out?

We have a dream of implementing a mixed conifer border along our property line in Washington state (zone 8).. How would you advise we go about it? We are looking into tree nurseries who sell/plant the trees but the majority around us have a limited selection and deal mostly in "privacy trees". Should we just go to nurseries that offer a wider selection and build it ourselves?

    Hi Bruce and Justin, like so many others commenting here this is a fantastic video-from the content, to commentary to the videography-A++.
    I am reaching out with a specific question, as a fellow 7b gardener/Raleigh, building planting beds at this time. I believe I missed identification of the taller blue conifer, far right of screen at
    54:09. It appears to be to the right of the front porch steps. I would love to know b/c I just sourced a Hortsman blue atlas and curious how similar they may be.
    {would love to see a winter tour, as well}
    Thank you!
    Natalie

    • @bruceduncan1792
      @bruceduncan1792 2 года назад

      Natalie, thank you for the nice words. Julie and I have a daughter/son in law in the Holly Springs area. That tree is a columnar blue spruce. (Picea Pungens Fastigiata) It is similar to your Hortsman as it grows narrow and gets about 10 ft tall. Your cedar grows about the same, although it might have a little broader circumference. They are both good trees for tight spaces near the house. The Atlantic Cedar will do better in the Raleigh area compared to my spruce. Two things. Give it good drainage. If your soil is heavy, lots of clay, dig and do away with a good portion and replace with a lighter soil mix. After planting if any foliage is touching the ground, remove it. Atlantic cedars are prone to fungus problems. Your humid air breeds many soil funguses which can be picked up if foliage is touching the ground. and place a mulch of needles or bark underneath to keep soil from splashing up during rainy spells.

And keep weeds out. Its a little costly so I don't use it everywhere. It's not plastic for sure. Your local garden center should be able to get some at request. • @bruceduncan1792
      @bruceduncan1792 2 года назад

      Thank you Sonya. Yes, you can grow conifers in Houston. Atlantic and Deodar Cedars will grow well there. We showed several in this video. Electric Blue, Hortsmann, Cream Puff, Silver Mist would all be good choices. Spruces might be hard there but a blue spruce call Fat Albert do well in warmer area's. You might ask a local nursery to get one if they don't already have them. There are some good juniper choices too. Don't let that word scare you. There are some cultivars that don't look like your grand daddy's junipers. Moon Glow, Spartan, Taylors, and Blue Point have good similarities to some in my yard. And False Cypress (chamaecyparis). I have several types shown in this video. And arborvitae's like you saw in this video. Remember the one we were hugging? the forever goldy? That would grow good in the Houston area.
