I remember seeing The Thin Red Line as an 18 year old with friends. It was probably the most moving experience I've ever had in the cinema, and at the time I couldn't explain why. My friends didn't share my sentiment (they were expecting another Saving Private Ryan). Malick films are like a meditation to me. I became a fan that night, and I went back two nights later to see it again. Then went back a few nights later yet again. It remains my favorite film to this day.

I’m sure that regardless of its actual quality, when Terrence Malik actually finishes it, it will be breathtaking visually, as seen by this video, the way he films his scenes is definitely one of his best qualities as a director.

I had to analyze a piece of art for a class and explain its significance. I decided on watching Malick films and choose one to write about. I watched all films from Tree Of Life onward. Given the staggering beauty shown here, you can see it was a difficult decision. I eventually settled on Knight Of Cups, and it’s probably one of the best papers I’ve ever written.

So you haven't seen any of his work before Tree Of Life? If you really liked his later films, I absolutely recommend that you must see the earlier ones! Tree Of Life is probably my favorite still, and his most recent, A Hidden Life, I consider a sort of return-to-form, but the 3 films in-between, while still incredibly beautiful, are actually my _least_ favorite of his. The Thin Red Line was for several years my all-time favorite film, and The New World, Days Of Heaven, and Badlands are all among the greatest, most wondrous films I've ever seen. To The Wonder, Knight Of Cups & Song To Song are all great, but even more experimental than the others, and even less narrative-driven. Much as I admire it, I'd even rank A Hidden Life behind those earlier works. Hope you check them all out!

@@Jimmy1982Playlists I’ve seen Badlands, but have yet to see Days Of Heaven, TTRL, or The New World. For this project I chose what was readily available (the Weighless trilogy was on Tubi, and I had a copy of both TTOL and A Hidden Life). Really want to in the future though. Malick’s films have immense personal meaning to me. I consider the Weightless trilogy not his best, but treating them as a slice of life in their own way (TTW being about love between a couple, KOC dealing with loneliness, and STS dealing with loss) and find them beautiful. Badlands is my least favorite (does not mean it’s bad), I just had different expectations. Going to watch pre TTOL soon.

Some people don’t like his experimental storytelling, but his style is undeniably beautiful.

I love Terrence Malick, but I mean come on. Some people just prefer more accessible directors like Scorsese. I hated Knight of Cups when I first saw it. I don’t blame people for disliking his films.

cinematographers have their own stunning vision seen in their heads that is why some of them become very successful directors, but again cinema is directors medium they way story shapes up in their heads, sometimes like he fall'is treatment film, when each sequence is shot in mesmerizing style or some budgets limited cannot spend much time on setting up shots because it takes time for each shot to create visual masterpieces... so those normal narratives are fine also as long as the story in totality is absorbing, whichever way it is shot. not just some visuals.
