Per Songfacts 10cc members Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman wrote this song; Stewart sang lead. The lyric is based on Stewart's real-life experience. "I remember walking through the rain and the snow when I lived in Manchester and we didn't have a telephone," he said in a BBC Radio Wales interview. "I had to go and find a phone box to ring the girl who was about to become my wife. The phones were down, and it was snowing, and these, these vivid pictures are there. If you put them in a song, a lot of people identify with a similar situation."
In a Songfacts interview with Graham Gouldman, he talked about writing this song with Eric Stewart. "When we started writing that, we had some of the music and he wanted to write a song about suicide," Gouldman said. "I told him that was not a good idea and fortunately he agreed. He came up with the title 'The Things We Do For Love,' which is very up and a great title really. What are the things we do for love? What do you do? What should we do for love?"

Eric Stewart the singer and co-writer is still married to the gal who inspired this song for more than 55 years now.....The most wonderful thing he did for love.

10cc are a great English rock band from the 70's. This group was super talented as every member was a multi-instrumentalist, singer, writer & producer. "I'm Not In Love" was their biggest hit in 1975 but they had other songs such as "Rubber Bullets", "The Dean & I", "The Wall Street Shuffle", "Silly Love", "Life Is A Minestrone", "Art For Art's Sake", "I'm Mandy, Fly Me" etc.
Yes, other than this one, I mostly just knew "I'm not in Love" - which was genius!
My dad usually calls them the most underrated band of all time, and I can see it. I never really hear them played, and most people have only ever heard "I'm not in love".
In 1977 two members of 10CC (Kevin Godley & Lol Creme) left the band and formed Godley & Creme. They wrote & sang some great songs..... "Cry" "Under Your Thumb" & "Wedding Bells".... Please give them a listen. I think you'll like them. 👍 🎶🎼🎙❤

I glanced at the comments, but didn't see a request for "Cry" by Godley & Creme. Lol Creme (Guitar & Keyboards) & Kevin Godley (drums) for 10cc had some success in '85 with "Cry" It peaked at 16 in '85.

great band. Thanks for posting. Graham Gouldman in 10CC wrote the soundtrack for ANIMALYMPICS ( 1980 ) which you can hear on youtube. Graham began song writing age 15 and wrote great songs for THE HOLLIES and THE YARDBIRDS.

This song takes me back to my childhood. We used to listen to this on the car cassette on holidays in our Austin Allegro.

What a great song, I can remember this song playing all the time when I was a small child. My parents have great eclectic taste in music and I am so thankful I was exposed to and lived with the great music of Kate 60’s the 70’s and 80’s. Thank you for helping to keep great music alive.

Love is Strange by Mickey & Sylvia is a fantastic R&B song from 1956. It made it to top and is in a few movies, like Dirty Dancing and BADLANDS.
