Rennala's second phase reveal, along with Ranni's VO, blew me away the first time I saw it. She transforms from a vulnerable, distracted and unsettling 'boss' into a focused and powerful sorceress. I think it caught everyone off-guard, and shattered our expectations.
I rarely see this brought up but there's no way it's a coincidence that Rennala is obsessed with reincarnation and Ranni, her daughter with who she shared a close relationship, has seemingly died. I can imagine she's torturing herself trying to find a way to bring her back, but her efforts are all doomed to fail because, as we know, Ranni isn't actually dead, and you can't ressurrect someone who hasn't died
@@miss_chalice quick question, if I may. Why is it that no one seems to be talking about the egg itself? Where did it come from, why did Radagon have it in the first place, why was it no longer needed to him? Basically, is it possible that Marika tried to be reborn as Radagon?
@@Thalidal There are two other references to "amber" in the game. I think the more relevant one is the HP/FP/Stamina talismans descriptions which state "The Erdtree's old sap becomes amber, treasured as the most precious of jewels in the age of Godfrey, the first Elden Lord." Given they were married during/around the age of Godfrey, I would guess it's sort of like a wedding gift to celebrate their union. Similar to how the Golden Order Greatsword was Rennala's gift to Radagon. As to why the Great Rune of the Unborn is in there, I have no idea. Considering we take the Great Rune out of the Egg without breaking it, it still could have been put there after the Egg was formed. It could have been placed inside there before or after the Shattering and there is no way to tell.
Another nice reference to you fighting Ranni in the second phase instead of Rennala is that all the summons she uses are connected to Ranni somehow. Her wolves can be found around the Three Sisters just like that one dragon. And she summons a troll that could be reference to Iji. The Bloodhound isn't exactly the same thing as Blaidd but he does seem to have a connection to Bloodhounds as he is rather upset with Darriwil.

I have been considering playing this game for a while. This video might just be the final push I needed. That second phase of the boss fight looks absolutely incredible, and the lore behind it is even better.
I love this video so much! The extensive analysis of the environment and all! I also wanna point out that I think Rennala herself can use summoning magic. Greatblade Phalanx states that the trolls/giants were sworn to Rennala by an oath.
Renala's second phase arenablew me away. There is a ton of beautiful locations in ER but that arena was truly breathtaking. Well Done! Welcome! Your Lore delivery is very good. As a partially disabled person, loud talking disturbs me. Your calming easy-to-understand voice/technique works very well. Then I couldn’t find one bad review on it, and after recently hearing it is nominated as possible game of the year I decided to give it another try and man am I glad I did
I like to think that Rennala practices reincarnation because of Rani. We don't know exactly when Rennala began her study of this art, but I like to think she's trying to reincarnate her dead daughter. Rani's plot was not known to all, and Rennala is locked within the library of Reya Lucaria, so my theory goes that Rennala still believes Ranni to be dead, and hopes to one day, recreate her. A poor fate for such an admirable person, when she was still whole.
First of all. AWESOME VIDEO. I came to some slightly different conclusions though. Renalla is dead. Its Ranni using the power of the egg to bring her back. That Phase 2. Its exactly like a spirit summon. as you say. Theres even bell chimes in the soundtrack just before the portal opens. But you must see that if Ranni can spirit summon her mother, she must have her mothers ashes. She keeps up the illusion that her mother is alive. But when we start to defeat her, Ranni takes over and Puppets her mother for Phase 2. Another ability Ranni is known to possess.
That Viridian Amber Medallion is one out of a set of Amber Medallions, each with its own color of sap and corresponding Stat effect, though they all have the same part in their description about this sap being from the Erdtree. Just pointing out that The Viridian Amber Medallion i's just not the only one with that description.
Oh my god, 123 hours into the game, I only got to "Mountaintop" just now ('cause I'm doing 100% of the game, I only go to the next area if i finished everything in the previous one) and JUST NOW i realized: "That's why the summons are so ~player like~". And I was questioning myself: "Okay, the moment where we fight our own version in the game is here... where's all the rest? where's the moment that the game will make us fight our own mechanics like the Spirits Summoning?" and there it was, in my face, i just didn't noticed. Thank for the video, thank you for the themes and the extremely clear symbolisms that TOTALLY passed by me, i really didn't noticed. I'll have to play this game a second and third time to catch everything up, because right now I'm just learning patterns, movements, item positioning, quest lines and story progression. It was really good to see this video, it helped me a lot. Thank you so much.
The other aspect to the larval tears and infact everything to do with mimics and albinaurics is that the silver is a reference to mercury and alchemical processes, which makes alot of sense that it lets you respec or begin the work from a new starting point...idk it makes sense to me...

Thank you so much for posting this! I follow the lore pretty closely in this game but had to leave home for almost a month. This was a great refresh of some earlier game events that got a little fuzzy while I was away.. I do have a question, if you don't mind. After flipping the study hall to reach the top of the Liurnia tower I found a corpse. The corpse gave me some items but I can't remember what they were or their descriptions. I sort of recall it being a piece of someone's flesh but I could be way off. Do you know what the items were and whose corpse that was?
I really feel for Renala. To be thrown in that kind of depression….it’s hard to find your way out. Ranni being so protective is heartwarming.
Rennala's second phase reveal, along with Ranni's VO, blew me away the first time I saw it. She transforms from a vulnerable, distracted and unsettling 'boss' into a focused and powerful sorceress. I think it caught everyone off-guard, and shattered our expectations.
Yeah this is late, but if you see this. That was likely all a mirage created by Ranni or an illusion.
I was wicked overleled so I killed her almost immediately in the second stage lol
when she opened her eyes and I saw the steely resolve in them I got chills
Isn't it actually Ranni using magic to transform or summon Rennala to her peak form ?
@@azzy6543Ranni was just imitating however much she could of what her mother used to be.
