Building a Better PlayStation Classic Console

- Much as I like the idea of the Sony PS1 Classic mini console, I was let down by the game selection and overall features. So let's assemble an alternative using a Raspberry Pi and a 3D printed case, no firmware hack required! Build section begins at 01:51 in the video.

As with any project like this there are _tons_ of variations in terms of parts, software, and execution to play with. Let me know what you'd do differently, I'm sure we can collectively come up with something far better!
Also, I'm looking into getting a nice 3D printer in the future since I'd love to try making my own case. Would appreciate suggestions.
For menu game artwork and details, I humbly recommend my own game scraper called Skyscraper. It's in the official RetroPie-Setup menu under the Experimental packages (scroll to the bottom). It can do all sorts of crazy things. I personally prefer to install it using the method described at the github page, but as it is now available officially in the menu, some prefer that method. Either way, here's the github page: github.com/muldjord/skyscraper
And here's a video showing the Skyscraper compositor in action: ruclips.net/video/TIDD8EFSz50/видео.html
Hey Clint, I highly Recommend Lulzbot. They are an American made brand from Colorado (shout out to my home state!) and they are pretty much one of the best for Pro-sumer/Professional printers. We have a Tazbot Mini, and it is freaking awesome. You're looking at around 1500, but for quality and dependability, they're worth it.
Original Prusa i3 MK3
I would recommend going with a case from Retroflag there a bit bigger coming in around the same size as the nes and snes classic (they even look like them) but they look and feel great.
I also have my games loaded on to a external flash drive rather than the sd card this makes transfer a little easier and allows for simpler upgrades down the line in I run out of space.
@@user-ro1cc8tz6d That's true, and they can print their own parts!
that PS starting sound
without reverb filter and resampling
just imagine listening to it with a subwoofer..
Brings back memories, gave me goosebumps. So damn cool.
It's the best out of any console I've heard.
How many years later and I still hummed along with perfect timing
I would love to see an updated version of this project
The console is smaller then the goddamn power adapter.
Use 2.5A output power bank or if you have PI 4 then 3.0A
420th like ;D
wowowowowowowowowowowowowowowoowow
Fun fact: Raspberry Pi 3B is actually faster than PlayStation Classic. The former features quad core A53 while the later comes with the much slower A35 cores.
Owww man, why people insist in buying something like that...I mean, I know these official retro consoles are what it says on the thin (being official, and only nintendo giving a damn about them). But you could make something even better, you know?
@@KORUPTable An even better choice tbh, most phones today are usually more powerful than pc's a decade+- old. I still had to see a perfect working version of dolphin and pcsx2 (dolphin already seems capable of such task at the very least).
@mamamia88 Sad but true. Even if it's not that hard, people still want something that they just plug in the screen and had a big logo of how official the thing is, even if the company has no love for the thing they build.
@@silverloto6773 I dont get why you are hating on the consumers of such a product? Not everybody cares about computer hardware or building their own emulators. In fact, most people just want to buy something that plugs in and plays games out of the box. And theres nothing wrong with that. They aren't "stupid", they just arent hobbyists like us. That's all.
@@MegaTechpc I have never said that they were stupid or anything like that. The things is, like the first comment said the cpu of this model of raspberry pi it's faster than the one on the playstation classic, so if someone make their own retro console (as shown in the video) they could perfom other task aside from emulating PS1 titles, such as running an OS, running an frontend arcade os (retropie) to emulate dreamcast and other systems. I never hate on anything, like I said above, nintendo does care for their retro systems (there was a note from devs greeting everyone who hack their system and upload their roms to the console), and even if sony did fail in some aspects with the PS1 Classic (the number of games it came, and not giving some of their best games, even obscure ones with large following, what they deserve. And we yet to see how to add isos to the console), they could surely make it better with enough time and more research. Again, I just love games and almost any console along with pc games (even retro pc and D.O.S games/machines).
I love that you're using Windows XP and the Media Center "Royale Blue" theme. I used to always go out of my way to install the theme on Windows XP Home and Professional.
How does one add this theme?
@@Bryanbobber I usually found it by Googling "Royale Blue XP" and following the Softpedia link. It comes as an "install shield" setup-like application. It doesn't install any programs or additional software, but after installing it, the theme is available from the dropdown.
As much as I love Royale Blue, nothing can beat Zune theme (Orange and Black) for XP :D
It's especially essential for me as my main XP machine was actually MCE 2005. Oh, such beauty...
I personally really enjoy the Royale Noir theme. If you don't know what that is, look it up! I'm sure you'll enjoy it as well
Me and my dad played the heck out of the PS1, and I was beyond excited to get him the PlayStation classic for Christmas this year. That being said, the disappointment was even stronger. You got me back to that original excitement, and he'll be able to play things from his childhood too after I get everything set up! Thanks LGR!
damn dude how young is your dad?
Emraal Play station came out in 95....
Yeah, I'm only 22. My dad was barely 18 when I was born. It happens. He grew up with an Atari, and a NES later on. Both second hand. He got the PlayStation the year it came out, and I was born the next year. That was the last time he baught a console for himself, and fell away from gaming as he became a dad. The retropie machine I threw together for him was a huge success though. He loves it, and we play the multiplayer games from my very early childhood whenever I visit. And I hear he's just as good at dig dug and qbert as he used to be.

The thought of a Raspberry Pi Cosplaying is the best.
Thank you for the ♥️ and idea, LGR!
We'll now see cosplayers cosplaying as Raspberry Pis cosplaying as PS1s
That pretty much describes the whole classic console trend in general.
I mean... I didn't even know what a raspberry pi was, before watching this... So not sure how many people would realize it's not just a ps1
Does this case make my rear port look big?
The ps1 classic went down to 30 dollars at my local walmart so im going to use it as a case and wire the power and reset button to the board so they function still
That's a great idea, the case is probably the best hing about the ps1 classic lol.
I would suggest checking Amazon first. I got a really nice SNES case with heat sink and fan
The internals aren’t bad either. Really, you only need to change the software (with something like AutoBleem).
@Neptune X12 did you get fired from a warehouse job recently?
i have blackbox.its not xbox, but its blackbox so it can run all not just nes snes sega c64 psx wii,but all LOL

LGR Station 1 is way better than the official one
need wood grain
Was gonna the same thing except it needs to have some woodgrain on it which someone also mentioned
Bryce McKenzie I call this the LGR Station Superior Edition (there is only one edition of the LGR Station, but it is inherently superior to Sony's cheap bargain-bin PlayStation Classic.
But a LGR Station Woodgrain Edition would be nice
This is actually more powerful than the console sony made, both the original and the remake
Nice vid. I've been thinking about doing something like this for awhile, but I've been too lazy to look up guides to see how involved it is. Now that I see how simple and inexpensive it is, I'm sold.
Same. I always was scared about such a project but this looks pretty easy. ^^
Try it guys its really not hard and you have up to date guides everywhere. Also its a really cheap project for what you get!
It sold me too, for certain. I have an old MAME cabinet I set up almost 10 years ago. It struggles on anything less retro than 16-bit games and is the size of a VCR.
This, a total setup of $100 that can play 64-bit games and sized to a deck of cards? And no countless hours of manual modification needed? Definitely time to upgrade!
I bought a Pi 3 after receiving a gift card to some store, and boy, is that little board versatile. After toying around, it became my retro game machine since RetroPie is so simple and well documented. I did install the Pixel desktop, fiddled around with webcam surveillance things, using it as a web server after RetroPie was installed, though.
I just want to give a thanks to all community specially the people who where involved in making all of this and made all of this acceptable to the public. Words cannot explain the joy you guys have brought to me using your software/emulations. Thank you.
I love that sony didnt make their own emulator, they just used someone elses
Reminds me of Square Enix, who used a fan Mod of FF7 HD remaster as if it was their own.
Why would they bother building one when they couldn’t be bothered to make region specific systems
Bradley Pearl never owned one so I couldn’t tell you
Bradley Pearl just thought of it I’ve never even owned a tv not made by Sony
@@bradleypearl2986 You're the only fanboy here, bro. This isnt about what platform is better. Sony stole someone elses creation and made money from it. That's fucking piracy dude. A mutli billion dollar company pirated an emulated made by some guy joe normalson

Hmmm and limitless games...essentially, so...yeah.

Buy cheap android tv box 16Gb, buy cheap Bluetooth controller/using ps4 controller, download epsxe emulator, and ps1 games data.. Whalla.. You can enjoy it.. Man, these LGR vids are so good and relaxing. Thanks for making all these quality content! You really are a beam of happyness that's much needed in my life :)
Many thanks to you! I ordered all my parts today. Can't wait to try this out.
Long live emulation! also a shout out for piracy for preservation of videogames.
Emulation keeps games alive fr
It’s crazy that we literally need to make an effort to preserve these games. Like as if they’re books and an empire is attempting to burn all knowledge.
Sometimes I'll get nostalgic and remember an old game I used to play and have to find it on my phone to figure out the name. Bejng able to find them and play them within minutes is amazing. I hope emulation never dies
Preserving old games isn't really piracy, in my opinion.
@Charles Lee Ray Try RetroArch. It has a mobile app and works great
Just imagine in 10 -15 years people doing this to a ps4 awesome
More like 20+, you don't see any Gamecube or ps2 classic. Maybe in 10 years we'll have a ps3 or xbox 360 classic.

Probably gonna find a lot of "Playstation Classic" consoles at Goodwill next year. Right next to the dollar store stuff.
then you can get one and use its case for a retropie. boom instant perfect case
I'm not sure it'll be that dire, but I certainly don't feel that it had the same cachet as the mini NES and SNES
Yeah, it's more likely that they're gonna be in used video game stores and pawn shops and stuff at like $30 for the next ten years. Point is still valid though!
@Shaman X Hi to low tier god for me
Maybe if it's a dollar, then I'll consider the PlayStation Classic. :P
This is what the PlayStation classic should’ve been! More games, better controllers, and cheaper!
you need to buy two dual shock if you don't have a ps, so it's not cheaper for everyone
marvin andia I have those DualShock controllers.
The Cando Railfan it makes the whole PlayStation classic look redundant, since most of those games can be downloaded, and I can find better PS1 games to play.
@@TheCandoRailfan lol nope
@@Markimark151
YOU can find better, but that doesn't mean you CAN download them legally. Dump them, buy them officially (PSClassic or on SONY's new consoles). Or, from the internet, but that's illegal. I am sure sometime you will be screwed for pirating those games. "THEY'RE OLD" isn't an argument, they're still awesome and still far cheaper then they were. NESClassic - one game is 60 bucks in USA when it was on original NES, 60 bucks is original NES Classic price, 30 games, 2$ per game. SNESClassic - 4$ per game and PSClassic - 5$ per game.
I built a retro console raspberry pi system just recently. 3+ model used with the Kintaro 9000 case which looks just like an SNES with functioning power and reset sliders. Totally sweet! Project turned out great. Got it loaded up with all the major consoles from NES to PS1. Even got some PC ports like Doom and Duke3D on there but still haven't got the controls mapped to the controller I'm using. Still a work in progress but great fun. Love your build and your videos, Clint. Take care.
Thanks for the idea, i've just got my Pi today, looking forward to install Retropie and spend most of the christmas vacation with my childhood PS1 games.
Such an excellent, excellent channel. Great production, pacing and information. Thank you for being so consistent.
I watched a PlayStation Classic review literally an hour ago. When I heard how underwhelming it is, my first thought was how long it will take before someone makes a better, custom version using a Raspberry Pi.
Well, that was fast.
Literally -5 months.

That can be said about any of those gimmicky ass "mini" consoles nintendo and other companies have released. Way better stuff can be made/bought for about the same money, in fact, for the price of one of those machines you can build one that runs all of those systems and more.

@@Djanbari Hi there
Also known as: "LGR makes a better job than Sony".
Sony probably gave the "PlayStation Classic" project to a new employee who knows nothing about consoles or the PlayStation because he originally applied as Security Guard, at Sony!
@@Zorander. Then again, Sony has a nasty habit of shooting themselves in the foot.
Hardly, this case looks terrible. I bet the heat dissipation is really bad as well, the heat sink must nearly be touching the top of the case. Kintaro are making a Playstation case for the raspberry pi in the future if anyone's interested, Would look a hell of a lot better than this...
@@Mdgr_zolom I noticed that too, but I actually got interested in this build unlike the piece of shit inside a nice looking plastic that Sony did.
Of course I would rather get a better case and a better heating solution if I got one myself, but I still think what he did is still better than the piece of crap Sony did.
@@Vitz_atelier I have both the ps classic and a few pi's. It really isn't that bad, have you got one?
I like your Builds man keep up you got my support
Sony should have made a PS2 Classic, mainly since it still can't be smoothly emulated and it can run PS1.
I really don't get the point ? Sony would sell much more by making two separate consoles.
Also, since they'd need to emulate two different hardwares AND to get games for both, the cost would've been much higher.
@@alexhardline2208 The PS2 could run PS1 games.
No need for two separate hardware.
but that would've required effort
Ps2s are cheap now themselves ( and can do a ton of emulation )
Pcxs2 runs all games at 60 fps
The irony of the Raspberry Playstation being smaller than the NES Classic or the PS classic, is of course that the Pi has better hardware for less money. So it's smaller, cheaper, better, more powerful, and can run desktop linux if you ever get bored of the emulation.. Hmmm,, what to pick i wonder. :D
I expected woodgrain. I'm disappoint.
I'm joking. Great video, as usually!
Speaking of woodgrain, I just realized how beat up his table has gotten :( I wonder if we can all convince him to give it a good sanding and a fresh coat of lacquer, because it seems like a nice table and deserves a little TLC after being such a champ in all these vids over the years.
That would've been a "PItari 2600", also probably much better than the real "Atari Flashback" made a while ago (I want to bet someone else out there have already done one or several of them...
Thanks to this video there is now one of these sat under my TV. Took a few hours to get everything up and running and to figure everything out, but I'm chuffed to bits with it. I decided to go with a Mega drive clone case for mine as it'll always be one of my favourite consoles to have come out. If only I could have found a decent Dreamcast one...

4:50 Windows XP? PS1 build? S W E E T .
It boggles my mind why they didn't repurpose the PSTV hardware for the official Classic. The emulation is way better being their own in house solution and Sony already had the hardware and tooling available. They could've slapped it in a new case, changed the UI, and manage to revive a recently discontinued product easily. Not to mention it'd have the added bonus of being connected to the PSN store to allow for purchasing more PS1 titles.
See, that would require both a)Sony to be run by competent people and b)acknowledging the existence of a console they went out of their way to bury.
I got inspired by you and made one myself using the steps you've mentioned.
Needless to say, I have been having a lot of fun playing it since then (apart from a few headache configuring the XBox 360 controller to PS1 controls).
Thanks for the steps, LGR!. :)
Keep up retro stuff tech stuff. Thank you so much for what you create, you do so great at it. The thrift videos of spotlighting the tech seen their :) thank you .

Hearing and seeing that Need for Speed game brought back memories of waking up at too damn early o clock and realizing my mom is playing need for speed before I had school in the morning. I realize she literally stayed up all night to play it and she later told me that she intentionally lost the disc so she won't play it anymore. I love my raspberry pi! I already have it loaded with tons of games from atari to playstation. I also got video clips and box arts for the games even got a custom theme on. I plan on getting the mega drive pi case that has a functional led and power switch. Right now I use the nes pi case from retroflag that has a power switch and led.
You'll love the MEGAPI case. It's really nice. Highly recommend it. The SNES retroflag case is good to. Very identical to the SNES classic mold
lol, love the Win XP system.
Another great video, thank you very much for this.
I would love to make one of these, it's a great project and the challenge is really worth it considering the results as you can have a MUCH better selection of games than what came with the PS1 Classic.
alone the fact that platforms like the raspberry pi exist is just amazing and to see what projects people can come up with is almost greater than the platform itself
It would be cool if any third-party company sells a specialized PS1 classic shell for Raspberry Pi with working buttons and USB ports connected with the Pi hardware.
Thanks for the video, Clint
Just buy a dead ps1, take all the guts out and you have your case
Well, although they don't yet have a PS model yet, Retroflag does have well made and good looking cases shaped as NES, SNES, SFC, and Mega Drive/Genesis.
They even have router cards on the inside for proper I/O placement and function on each model case.
They have a website, and sell trough Amazon.
retroflag.com/
I will get two of them soon, the SFC and the Mega Drive, but more for the fun factor of having a fairly inexpensive system, being able to separate the games from both Nintendo and Sega home consoles and portables, lodged in their respective look-a-like cases.
For more serious and varied emulation, i'll go the Nvidia Shield route.
It's a well polished product, and a heck of a lot more powerful for emulation.

Scared or not, the ps intro made you feel like the future was here. It's something special that is etched deep within our minds.
What about the PS2 start up sound
7:50 OMG NFS3. Man, I loved that game...
It seems stressful but DO IT. PlayStation Classic isn't that good, make your own thing and do it right. You'll be tired, you'll probably screw up the parts a little if you're new to building things, but in the end you'll get it working and it'll be much better than the Classic. Myself, I love emulating on PC. I don't know about PS1 emulators, but for PS2 emulation on my PC I can increase the resolution of the textures and go nuts, and people always comment "Damn how does your PS2 look so fancy?" =P
Yes, but I feel more seeing Tomb Raider, man that was times when games had such a great atmosphere that no one cared about the some hundret huge pixels the games was made of and Tomb Raider was one of the best, but PS had really bad graphics, on PC NFS looked ways better
16:9 patches and increased rendering resolution in PCSX2 is amazing.
Oh yeah there is certainly good pc emulation for ps1 on pc. epsxe can make things look smoother and sharper. Never liked retroarch emulators and interface, I prefer just having emulators standalone.
@@yellowcrash10 ..But..PCSX2 doesn't have Ps1 compatibility....unless you're talking about PCSXR-PGXR

Always wanted a Pi, but never knew what I wanted it to use it for. I have a bunch of games but no console, I guess I could make files out of these discs and try this in a near future, gonna save video for later.
I think when my PS1 and PS2 die I will build one myself. My PS3 can't handle pre 1997 games like the original Tomb Raider.
I ordered the Pi 3 A+ today because of this video.
You sir are a legend. I will be doing this in the near future omg. I'll assume there are new versions of everything by now.
look at all those happy little polygons
I was reading up on Dino Crisis the other day and found out the Tyrannosaurus was made out of 500 (count 'em, 500!) polygons. I remember being a little kid and thinking it was amazing.
*When you break the fourth wall, these are the results*
Happy 1 million!
I've always just done this sort of thing on my pc, but this is definitely interesting. Not that I didnt know it was possible, but you made it seem pretty easy. Gonna have to try it out.
If you're gonna try a project like this, use a Pi 3B+ (PLUS) rather than a 3B. They run faster by default and may not even need a heatsink due to the integrated metal heat spreader, better 5Ghz Wi-Fi and gigabit ethernet built in, come with a header for Power over Ethernet (PoE), and cost exactly the same price. What's not to love?
If tight space and lower power are important then you might consider the Pi 3A+. It should be the same speed as the 3B+ in terms of emulation but it's quite a lot smaller, $10 cheaper, uses less power than even the 3B and has less ports. Of course if you want to go even further there's the Pi Zero, but that is going to struggle emulating the PS1...
Pi Zero is a fine avenue for NES, Game boy and other less demanding systems. Microcenter sometimes has a sale where you can get a pi zero for a dollar. Pretty sweet deal
does the PoE give enough power for PS1 emulation?
Any news about the Raspberry Pi 4 coming out?
Can you use the same power adapter?
There is an optional emulator under the retroarch settings, and it emulates ps1 on pi zero very nice. I usually play my ps1 games on my pi zero with that emulator. The only problem is, it's not working with bluetooth xbox one controller.
theres also LibreElec Reborn Remix which mixes Kodi+ Emulationstation with RetroArch right into Kodi's Confluence Default Skin. for an all in one and RetroPie is perfect on its own for pure gaming w/o any additional focus for media. LE-Reborn Remix is just kinda Retropie w/ the added goodie of Kodi 18and netflix plugin compatability :3 but if anyone gets the 3B+ for this? try to look for a heatsink and fan solution and a 3Amp USB psu is a must over a 2.5Amp USB psu
or you can graduate from elementary school, leave the Raspberry Pi, and pick up either an Odroid XU4 or Shield TV :-)
Damn bruv, I gotta look that shit up! I've just been using berryboot but you can't select options with a controller.
My laptop is my Retroarch machine. I love that sucker. And the achievement integration into retro games is absolutely amazing.
i'm going to make one of these for my roommate... she had a PS1 years ago and misses it, so this would be an awesome gift for her

I wonder how hard it would be to make the case slightly bigger and add a front facing slot loading CD-ROM, and functional Power, Reset, and eject buttons. 🤔
The hardest part would be the CD-ROM. Because the PS1 had a clamshell CD drive, getting that just right might be a bit of challenge. The power, reset, and eject buttons would be super easy via the GPIO pins.
I bought the PlayStation Classic, then I modded it to play all the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games. I'm happy now.
I know this late and my third comment on this video already but I want to say thank you, LGR, I am having lots of fun with my RetroPie system and your video along ETA Prime's video has helped me pick out the right parts for my old-school gaming needs. Thank you.
Super thumbs up for mentioning Ben Heck!
I built a raspberry pi with RetroPie as well. My biggest issue is the input lag with all emulators. From what I've researched, its a Retroarch thing. I'm sensitive to the input delay. Comparing it to my original consoles hooked up to a CRT, its quite noticeable, and makes games near unplayable. I've tried many settings, but I haven't been able to get it to be either gone, or next to non existent. This WOULD be a perfect set up otherwise.
Doom_master1122 your computer isn’t good enough
Hi!... i'm having that issue as well. What i did to make it more playable was to disable all smoothers and filters. Apparently the PI doesn't works as well with those "features" ON. I was curious to see how well it responds to @LGR after this install with the PS4 controller directly connected to the raspberry. I'm using an alternative PS3 controller and a bluetooth dongle to pair it. @LGR can you show us if you are having that delay?. As @Doom_master1122 said, apparently it is a Retroarch thing and also connected to anything rather than a CRT.
To be honest I just stuck abunch of emulators on my android phone, had them load roms off an sdcard and bluetooth a controller.
It's not as customisable or crisp as a raspberry pi, but it gets the job done. Although still working on the tv display and a good analogue controller.

Such nostalgia,much happiness,wow
awesome video, I wish it was 20minutes longer and more in depth like some of your other videos :D
this is amazing, and of course, you tested Need For Speed.. I miss the days when NFS was actually a good game.
nfs iii is still the best
@@cannonnichols7329 sadly no nfs 2015 was a massive deception, payback wasn´t any better
@@kylo-juju3796 Carbon was the last ''decent'' NFS, the last REAL NFS was Hot pursuit 2 on the PS2 (the Xbox,Game Cube& PC version is awful)
@@Jonathan11225 yeah tbh i liked hot pursuit 2010 and rivals, even if they weren´t as good as the classic ones XD but those two there´s no other nfs game from nowadays that can be considered good, and tbh i don´t know what they were trying with the run, but i´m pretty sure they failed XD
I remember a need for speed that was more like grand theft auto but without the guns. I don't remember what it was called but it was probably my favourite as it wasn't just racing but you could also just explore
Nice. I bought a few PSX games on the PS3 through the online store and the experience was below that of emulation. Not even the aspect ratio was correct, plus the image was very soft.
Aren't PSX games emulated on later models? I know that the case is true for PS2 titles, they run terribly.
Nice stuff yo!
Thank u for this awesome video
i wanted the ps classic but also got disappointed with the quality and lineup... i will be trying to do my own, thanks for the video !
Does it handle multiplayer well? If 4 player crash team racing is possible i would start this build tomorrow.
Look up the emulator info. If it allows it, then why the hell not
@@Mernom allowing does not necesarily mean "runs it well" which is my worry. I've been looking online and found little about it, closest thing i've seen are a couple of dudes testing the n64 emulator on the raspberry. It seemed that they could run mario kart with 4 controllers but since they were just 2 guys they werent able to test the 4 controllers running intensively at the same time. I'll have to see for myself i guess but if it fails the boys will be disappointed
@@Nacoleptic I'm pretty sure that you're not the first guy who came up with the idea... There SHOULD be at least one discussion forum that asked it and got an answer somewhere.
It will probably run a bit slower than it would be expected, but i think it shouldnt be much different than the single player experience
Used to play n64 4 players emu on the original xbox, run smoth. Suppose raspberry can do way better.
Love running my retropi setup. Still on the lookout for an affordable retropie handheld solution.
great attitude, great channel. Cant wait to see you do it for PS2!!!!!
