You're never alone in this :), in January I'll have this for 10 years officially, I was diagnosed when I was 6. I hope learning the basal rates and carb counting is coming along easy for you!!
I’m waiting on my labs from today and have been looking at videos. Unfortunately I think I know what my diagnosis is going to be. These videos are helpful preparation and let me know that I can get through this. - a body builder (newbie) Update: my labs came back normal! So thankful. And Thank you for sharing information. Thanks for sharing this. My oldest daughter was just diagnosed with type 1diabetes. She is 11. She ended up in the children's hospital. My daughter eats 60 grams of carbs for breakfast. We do the same thing you do . She has to take lantus at night. She gives herself shots. People don't realize how life changing it really is and it affects everyone directly in their lives
I had no idea what T1Ds went through in a day until it happened to me. So many aspects of daily life changed, but I'm still able to do all the things I love. I am so impressed your daughter does her own shots. She must be very strong 😊 Wishing you and your family all the best💙 You've got this!
This is awesome! Hope you continue making these - they are so informative! I’m 25 and have had type one for 5 years and you’re already so on top of everything less than a year since diagnosis! Kudos!

You have such great control of your Diabetes. This is a really good video. I'm going to see the nutritionist at my Endo's office for the first time so at least I know some things to ask....thanks.

That’s great that you work for Novo Nordisk. The novo pen echo was perfect when I first diagnosed and wanted more precision with dosing to the nearest half unit. The advancements in diabetes technology are incredible and I’m so excited to see what new improvements come in the next few years. Thanks for watching 😊
@@LauraCravenOfficial the video showed so much control over your blood glucose level that over time it must minimise damage to your body. Even though normal people release insulin it doesn't mean that our bodies control it as well as you are doing in the video.
I'm getting my freestyle libre when I'm home on break with family I'm so excited it's not long until I start this new journey and new chapter in my life 😊
In addition to having an extremely beautiful natural face, you're doing great with all the hurdles that your condition puts in front of your daily life. Very inspiring.
It took a lot of trial and error for me to figure out the right insulin:carb ratio and length of prebolus to master eating pasta. The pasta in this video is made of chickpea flour and has less carbs than regular pasta, which definitely helps my blood sugar. Wishing you all the best on your pasta eating endeavours 😊 You've got this 💪🏻
Thanks for the video. My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 at the age of 1 year old. Me and my wife do not have diabetes so it’s a bit hard for us to come to terms with it as we have no experience.
Hai MS. Laura , I am madhav , I was diagnosed with Type1 Diabetes When I am 18 years old. Really your video is inspiring to me.I have been working as a Nurse in UAE. I would like to be like you.
Kristen my heart goes out to you 💙 It is definitely a crazy and confusing time. You will be amazed by how quickly you learn, adapt, and find a way to do all the things you love. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions or if you need some support
I completely feel you when you go low and you aren't hungry. It really sucks. I take my basal in the morning so it releases during the day and I don't have to take much short acting. It drops a lot at night.
Wow that park was so pretty! I have T1D too and it is a handful some days! Thanks for sharing your day. Is it hard to sleep with your libre on? My md wanted me to get one and use it instead of my CGM.
Komoka Provincial Park is one of my favourites 😊 I’m glad you liked it! T1D is a lot of work and we never get to take a break. I do not feel my Libre sensor when I sleep. The Libre does not have alarms when you sleep, unlike the dexcom, so if night time lows or highs are something you are concerned about you may want a different CGM. There are lots of options out there 😊
I love the video I have been T1D 33 years. I have 4 children and always worked full time. Do you work or go to school? Is this just a chill day? I found out very challenging to keep track of everything on days that I work Kudos to you. Yeah I hate lows. Mine come out of nowhere too.
This was a chill day while I was in graduate school. I have finished now and work full time. It took a lot of effort to adjust to managing diabetes while working a full time job. I find it difficult to pre-Bolus at work or stick to as strict of a schedule.
@@LauraCravenOfficial for me eating a predictable meal such as packing lunch makes a difference but it is impossible to eat at the same time each day pumping has made my glucose levels more stable and I require less insulin now
My sister has 4 children, 3 boys and one girl. The oldest is 22 now, the youngest is 9. Both the oldest and the youngest got diabetes at the age of just 3 years. It is so weird that they both got diabetes at the exact same age.
Last week my son 11 year's old diagnose type 1,its shocking to me n our whole family, life suddenly change,we are trying to understand things , hba1c 15.
3 units of tresiba after 14 units of bolus? It doesnt make sense. I am using the same combination of insulin. But i am more focused on proteins and fats. I am taking 2.5 in morning with 30 carbs and 40 protein and 30fat, lunch usually not more then 40 carbs with similar proteins and fats with correction after 3 hours and dinnre. similar to breakfast with 3 units of lyumjev as novorapid i had to take 15-20 minutes before lunch. It is frustrating, but i really like the video whitch i saw and its highly appreciated that every DB1 is dealing with that daily fight. Personally i am always scared to take more then 5 units as it can make nice drop especially when i have a lot of unplanned movements in really high intense due to the kids. You never know when you will have to run :-D. Thank you once again for this video
Thank you for this. I was diagnosed on a virtual appointment and just told to begin the long lasting insulin at bedtime. Did you begin your fast acting insulin right away? I am still waiting to meet with the doctor in person to find out how treatment will continue. Also, I assumed I was going to need to eat low carb for the rest of my life but it seems like I will just need to be aware of carbs and adjust my insulin based on that. Thanks for sharing.
I’m glad you found this helpful 😊 Yes, I was started on fast acting insulin and long acting insulin right away. Everyone is different and some people are still making some insulin at diagnosis, called the honeymoon phase. I was never told to eat low carb. I was given some suggestions of how many carbs to have at each meal. Mine were 30 g for breakfast, 50 g for lunch, 50 g for dinner, and up to 30 g for snacks or dessert. I stay within these limits 99% of the time and take more insulin when I want to have more carbs.
Hi Laura, what's up. That's amazing your vídeos, I am from Brazil and I am diabetic type 1 over twelve years, my questions is: Are you American? How is the treatment there for people with diabets, because here in Brazil is really bad unfortunately and it's too expensive. By the way, congrats and long life for us.
Hello Cris! I am Canadian and while I lived in Canada I was spending close to $3000 CAD per year on diabetes supplies and prescriptions. I know it is much cheaper than the expenses in America, but it is still a lot of money to have to pay. I’ve since moved to the UK where my insulin pump and prescriptions are fully covered by the NHS. It has been a relief to no longer have to pay for these things. Hope you’re doing well and wishing you good health too 💙
After watching this I realised that I need to change from having my insulin from after to before now…considering what is happening with me I might ask what is better for me.
Great video Laura. Never witnessed anyone taking a palm prick before 😁 also quite curious how long you have been diabetic? I'm trying to gain better understanding of how to lower my insulin doses in general. My HBA1C is always good (~48-52).. but my insulin doses are high. Tresiba 20IUs and novorapid approx 55-60IUs per day.. roughly 20 per meal. I do eat lots of carbs and my ratio is 6/1. Im 6ft 27yrs old and about 190lbs.. wondering what would be a good method of increasing my sensitivity.. ive been thinking of trying keto.. as I'm already quite active. Id love to take smaller doses like yourself.
Cause of vitamin d deficiency and chicken pox virus I got Type 1 Diabetic what's Ur cause Canada means less of sunlight so factor 1 low vitamin d fulfilled factor 2 infected with some virus, pre diagnoses did U had some fever or other immune system related issues ??
Looks like you’re managing really well, especially with keeping in mind how recently you were diagnose. But one thing... Prime your pen 😱 If you don’t prime your pen before each injection, you don’t actually get the correct dose since the needle isn’t filled with insulin when you push the button to inject insulin. It may not be much you miss out on, but it’s still not as accurate as when the needle is filled with insulin before the injection, and if taking very low doses of insulin, say a 0,5 unit bolus or correction, then the loss could be significant vs the intended dose. Hope you’re continuing to do well, and staying safe from this thing that’s flying around the world
It might not be shown in the video, but I always make sure to prime my needle. You are absolutely right, it is very important to make sure you get the right dose 😊 Thanks for watching 💙
@Sarah Garrett Basically do an air shot with usually 2 units to fill the needle with insulin and making sure that the pen and needle is working properly before you dial your dose and inject. If not priming the pen you’ll have air inside the needle and while it’s very small amounts, it can be enough to make a difference in the delivered insulin dose, especially if you’re taking a very small dose. Say for example you need to take just one unit (or even half a unit if having a pen that does half units as well) and you don’t prime the pen and needle prior to injection, then you’ll really just get air and little to no insulin at all actually injected into you.
I was diagnosed with T1D ,2 yrs back. I wanted to know how much is your hbA1c? Mine after trying my best is around 5.5 every 3 month when i get tested.
Way to go! It sounds like you’re doing a great job. My A1Cs since diagnosis have been between 5.3-5.9%. My goal is to keep it under 6%. Hope you’re doing well 😊
@@LauraCravenOfficial Thanks for replying laura. Two things really helps me are: a) daily taking a walk for 2-3 miles. b) carbs i have per meal. I also hope you are healthy and doing well 😊
My husband and I are like 99.9% sure I'm diabetic (getting tested soon) and this is super helpful. I'm concerned about the cost of supplies like readers and insulin but I noticed you're also Canadian - is it as expensive as everyone says it is? My dad is diabetic but I haven't spoken to him in over 10 years so I'm not sure what to expect if my results are positive.
Yes I am Canadian. The cost of supplies for me depended on whether or not I had health insurance. I was diagnosed when I was a student and 80% of my prescriptions were covered with my university plan. I still had to pay about $1500 out of pocket in a year. I had a period of 6 months where I had no insurance and had to pay out of pocket for everything and it cost about $350 per month for my insulin, freestyle Libre sensors, lancets, and test strips. I wish Canada had universal pharmacare. Best of luck with your test 💙 I’ll be sending positive vibes your way.
@@LauraCravenOfficial that's not too bad, compared to what I thought it would be! I have insurance through my job that covers most of my prescriptions but they don't cover supplies, but we do apparently have a local program that helps with that. Thank you so much! ❤
Just had a fasting blood test, won't find out the results for a few days... but it's likely I have it.. So been staying up all night just trying to get an understanding of what likely in for.. If I may ask, when you you diagnosed, as a child? more recently? Is an organ transplant an option for you, or possibly in the future?
I was diagnosed as an adult (25 years old) and I’ve been living with T1D for about 1.5 years. The quality of life with T1D is greater than being an organ transplant recipient, so they typically would not transplant a pancreas in patients with T1D except in extreme circumstances or if the patient needs an additional organ transplant. It looks like there is some promising research transplanting Beta Islet cells from the pancreas that make insulin. Hopefully one day soon there will be a cure. I hope you’re doing okay and I’ll be thinking of you. You’ve got this 💪🏻
@@LauraCravenOfficial Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!! I'll be sure to keep watching, no doubt repeat watches to help suck in all I can! I will always hope for T1D tips & updates from you - at least through the camera lens, you look like you have it together, it's really comforting - even though reality is never so simple. I hope you are able to get back to making travel content once covid calms down, I really enjoyed the video of the failed campsite (camping at Rock Lake) - Until this year I would travel to the outback (of Australia). Sleep in my wagon, motels, tents & most recently a little caravan.. which backfired horribly because the caravan park had a black out... but that's all in the fun of camping right? Thank you again - I force myself to look on the bright side and realise at least I can keep googling information while my mind races, not long ago people would only have to wait for a doctor to get information and try to remember what the Doc said.. Sorry for this TL;DR - just know your videos (even the travel ones!) & your reply helped!
I hope to get back to travel and camping too! I’ve really missed it this year. Looking on the bright side takes practice and patience. I’m thankful that diabetes feels easier to manage now than it did in the beginning. I’m so happy to hear that my videos have helped you 😊 there are lots of great diabetes resources on the internet and I did a lot of my own research too when I was first diagnosed. I don’t have everything together all the time 🤪, but I put in a lot of effort to keep my A1c low and still eat the foods I enjoy and do the activities I love. Everything comes with practice!
seems like such a hassle to think about everything you're eating, i can just eat whatever i want whenever,,, props to you, I also have an autoimmune disorder (its bladder related tho) and ya its a hassle i know how it feels...
OMG hi I have diabetes too and I was wondering do you know the app to use if you have a do you know the app to use if you have a Dexcom g6 just wondering thank you
I’ve been going crazy with my high blood sugar lately. I’ll eat and take my insulin and if I go high, I stay high. I’ll go to 220 then do 2 units then 2, 3 hours later. It keeps going until dinner. Then it stays high I’m not sure why. I take humalog and 21 units of lantis.
Why do I have to look away watching you inject yourself despite having injected myself thousands of times 😅 Thanks for the video, sometimes it can be a lonely illness and seeing others in the same boat helps
I like to bolus for 75% of the carbs before I eat the pizza and 25% an hour and a half later. I still usually end of doing a correction a couple hours later too. I like to go for a walk a couple hours after eating pizza to help prevent the delayed high 😊
I don't think a blood glucose of less than 5 mmol/L is low. Most non diabetics (Non metabolically impaired humans) lie below 4.6 mmol/L. You must still make a fair amount of insulin. Your post meal blood sugars with large carbohydrate meals were close to 5! Your Tresiba intake is also very low at 3 total units! I been a type 1 diabetic for 25 years and I need a total of 8U of Tresiba split in 2 doses. I tend to avoid carbs at all cost, only eat high protein and low carb vegetables. It works for me I tend to average about 4.3 to 4.8 mmol/L, even after meals. If you want to preserve your beta cell function you should listen to Dr. Bernstein diabetes university, I wish I used his method when I was first diagnosed. My last 4 HbA1c were 4.7, 4.5, 4.6 and 4.7% definitely worth a look.

I was JUST diagnosed last week and I am 24 years old.... its so crazY!
There are lots of options out there 😊
Very informative video thanks alot 🌷🌷🌷
I love the video I have been T1D 33 years. I have 4 children and always worked full time. Do you work or go to school? Is this just a chill day? I found out very challenging to keep track of everything on days that I work
Kudos to you.
That is a coincidence for sure! It’s nice to have someone else in the family that knows exactly what the other is going through.
Sadly the Freestyle Libre isn’t a continuous glucose monitor - it’s a flash monitor. I heard the Libre2 however will be CGM!
Siubhan Ward you’re absolutely right! I have to scan every time I want to get a reading. I’m hoping Canada gets the Libre2 soon 😊
you are so pretty !! what a qween x also type one diabetic buddies !
I feel your pain girl girl power
That one handed thing is pretty cool.
Good, informative video.
I was diagnosed exactly 5 days after you! x
We are almost diabetes twins!! 😊 I hope you’re doing well. ❤️
@@LauraCravenOfficial thank you, you too! x
Last week my son 11 year's old diagnose type 1,its shocking to me n our whole family, life suddenly change,we are trying to understand things , hba1c 15.
I never knew you could prick the palm of your hand I always thought fingers or toes thanks 👍
11:09-12:09 Absolutely
I use a season g6 and I check my phone for my bg
It's like your a doctor you know so much
Thank you for this.
Hope you’re doing well and wishing you good health too 💙
“I hate when I go low.”
It’s a terrible feeling.
Super helpful!
So happy you found it helpful Mark 😊
After watching this I realised that I need to change from having my insulin from after to before now…considering what is happening with me I might ask what is better for me.
You're so brave 😁
@Alicia Brown no it did not. Type 1 diabetes is a life long condition unfortunately. Stay on your meds 🤞
Hi my name is aya i am from morocco and i have type 1 diabetic too 🥰
When your checking your blood percent does it like poke your arm or hurt when your putting it on?
There is a pinch when inserting the Libre. It doesn’t hurt when I take readings and I often don’t even notice it’s there.
@@LauraCravenOfficial ok thank you for answering ^^
Ahh love it when you're a little lower and get to have a "free" treat snack:D
“Free” treat snacks to prevent a low are always great 😊
Cause of vitamin d deficiency and chicken pox virus I got Type 1 Diabetic what's Ur cause Canada means less of sunlight so factor 1 low vitamin d fulfilled factor 2 infected with some virus, pre diagnoses did U had some fever or other immune system related issues ??
I recently got t1d
I hope you’re doing okay. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
Two things really helps me are:
a) daily taking a walk for 2-3 miles.
b) carbs i have per meal.
OMG hi I have diabetes too and I was wondering do you know the app to use if you have a do you know the app to use if you have a Dexcom g6 just wondering thank you
Sorry, I don’t use a Dexcom and I don’t know which app to use for it. Do you have a diabetes team that might now?
hi dear my son 7 years old diagnosed type 1 last month, its hard time for my son and me.i don't know how to handle him
I’ve been going crazy with my high blood sugar lately. I’ll eat and take my insulin and if I go high, I stay high. I’ll go to 220 then do 2 units then 2, 3 hours later. It keeps going until dinner. Then it stays high I’m not sure why. I take humalog and 21 units of lantis.
That sounds so frustrating. I try upping my basal when I have highs that last all day. Hoping your sugars come down soon 💙
Slow digestion which releases sugars continuously after 2 hours and insensitivity also contribute so talk to doctor
i have type one diabetes it sucks the other day 100 and my nurse made me drink a juice like why
Where u get ur freestyle liber patch ?
Wsh you don't use the insulin pump?
Thank you! I am making a comic and the main male lead has type 1 diabetes. Doing research so I can make it accurate!
That’s awesome!
Why do I have to look away watching you inject yourself despite having injected myself thousands of times 😅 Thanks for the video, sometimes it can be a lonely illness and seeing others in the same boat helps
do we need to check first what type of diabetes we've got ?
Absolutely! There are many types of diabetes and it’s important to make sure that someone is receiving the right treatment for them.
Thanks from thailand, laura...my doc checked it for me..but you know some docs here said...no u don.t need...how come!?!
Great video, I think Chinese people should also like it! Can I translate the video and post it on the Internet in China?
Do you live in Canada?
I used to, but I moved to the UK at the start of 2021 😊
I use that insulin pen
Type A personality!
You haven't heard Craigavon I'm t1d 2 back to I am 9 I got diagnosed with t1d couples months ago I live in Craigavon 2
what is the reading device you use?
That was the Freestyle Libre Scanner. The Libre can also be scanned with a smart phone.
I'm surprised I found!!!!! Their ain't nothing around for us no commercials for help!!!! Only 2makes me angry!! When we are the most Critical.
I just found you and I also have a libre(2) and I have to same pen :) I also would like to know from anyone if they have any tips for pizza
I like to bolus for 75% of the carbs before I eat the pizza and 25% an hour and a half later. I still usually end of doing a correction a couple hours later too. I like to go for a walk a couple hours after eating pizza to help prevent the delayed high 😊
I have it toc
Sadly , people don’t know why BG goes low on type 1 diabetics
How many meals do you have in a day?
And how many insulin units do you take by the day? ❤
I have 3 meals a day and I take between 15-25 units insulin total depending on the time of day and exercise planned.
Do you also get levemure
At the time I used Tresiba for my long acting insulin.
I also have diabetes and i’am only 11
Very Nice Stay Connected Dear Friend 💕💞
Your numbers are so great😅
I don't think a blood glucose of less than 5 mmol/L is low.
I don't want to live with it, it's very hard
I don’t know what I would have done without your help. Thank you so much for curing my Diabetes Type 2 with your herbs Dr Igudia
Next time when you do this may you please put number translations for us in the us
That’s a great suggestion! Thank you 😊

You need more protein in your diet.
