There is never a good time to be diagnosed with diabetes, but I think during grad school is near the top of the list! I hope you’re doing okay 😊 I was so relieved when I started insulin that the thirst was finally gone after so many months. I was exhausted from having to wake up that many times during the night. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need some support! 😊

Laura - Stay strong. I was put in ICU and ended up in coma. DKA and ended up staying for 10 days. I had all the same symptoms but put it down to menopause! I was 56 when diagnosed. All good now. That was 2.5 years ago. The biggest challenge is learning how much insulin to take. Please stay strong. I know the confusion, first time the nurses make my own shot was scary. Hugs to you and your family!

In June of 2020 I had my yearly checkup done and everything was perfect. By August of that same year I lost about 35 lbs pretty quickly and was VERY thirsty and tired. I'm 6'2" tall and was 178 lbs. I decided to go see a doctor and my blood sugar was 598! I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 45! Talk about a shock! Insulin dependent for the rest of my life now. I'm just thankful that I didn't just ignore it.

The test didn’t require fasting. My blood sugar was >20 mmol/L and my A1c was 13%. It was quite obvious I had diabetes regardless of if I’d eaten before the test. It may have required a fasting test if my symptoms were less severe.

I’ve had Type 1 Diabetes for over 16 years. I was diagnosed at age 11. Had all the classic symptoms and my pediatrician at time said it was probably related to Puberty 🤦🏽‍♀️🙄. My mother wasn’t convinced at all with his evaluation. She took me to the emergency room because I was throwing up that day. When I got to the hospital the attending physician said my symptoms were related to a urine infection. I spent 4 hours in the emergency room with only I.V. fluids and antibiotics. Went back home and I slept. My mom woke me up to have dinner and at that point I couldn’t walk. My dad had to carry me to take to the hospital again. When they saw the blood work from the first I went in my BS level was over 500!! I was admitted to the intensive care because I was in full on DKA!!

Hi Christina. Dealing with a new diagnosis is a very difficult and overwhelming thing. I sought counselling following my diagnosis, and my counsellor explained that being diagnosed with a chronic illness can be a lot like grief. You are grieving the person and life you used to have. I went through the stages of denial, anger, and sadness before I could arrive at acceptance, but it took me several months to get there. I can definitely relate to the stress of being in graduate school and finding out you have T1D. That feeling of being overwhelmed has gotten so much better with time, and there come a time when this version of yourself will feel like the new “normal”, as hard as it might seem right now. Luckily, I was okay to wait a week before I saw my new endo and got started on insulin. I was referred to a diabetes education centre a couple of weeks after my diagnosis and they were so helpful and taught me all about diabetes management. The two weeks I spent waiting for my referral was very difficult and scary because I really had no idea what I was doing. It's amazing how much you learn in such a short time :)

So good to hear other people going through the same. I was diagnosed 2 months ago, age 30. My biggest problem is my fear of low blood sugar. When I see 90mg and tendence going low in the Freestyle App, my body really is full of fear and panic. Since the diagnoses I couldnˋt really relax for a good hour without fearing the bloodsugar. Sometimes, like now, even sleeping is hard, because I fear to not wake up again. I know it sounds hard. I try to stay positive, but sometimes it's hard. Next week I will go to a special diabetes clinic to learn more about diabetes, hopefully the increase of knowledge will lower my angst.

That sounds like a very scary experience. I hope you’re doing okay now. I saw a counsellor after my diagnosis and they explained that being diagnosed with a chronic illness like T1D is a lot like going through the stages of grief because you are mourning the health and life you used to have. I was in denial at first, then I was angry that this was happening to me and sad, and eventually got to a place of acceptance. It took a long time, but I’m happy to be on the other side. Wishing you all the best 💙

The diabetes symptoms started like a month later and I knew I needed to see a doctor from the weight loss. Doing good at managing blood sugars but now I am endlessly curious about how and why this happens and what we can do to prevent and or find a cure. I got my T1D diagnosed about 5.5 years ago. I was seeing my Endocrinologist for something differrent. Then as the end of my appointment, I go the Vampires to do blood draws. I was driving home and my phone went off. It was actually my doctor. He told me to park in a safe location and then call 911. So I did. The ED told me that I had a glucose level was at 698. The strange thing was I didn't have all the classic symptoms except for a dry mouth . I got put in the ICU and then critical care unit. And, then home with no training.
    Stay health.

Just stumbled across your video! I received my diagnosis two weeks ago at the age of 26 after having undergone surgery for another emergency medical diagnosis. My BGLs were sitting at 24 mmol/L after the surgery but had no obvious symptoms prior to the surgery or even a couple of months before that! I feel like we have similar stories and I am also doing my clinical PhD! I was doing so well in relation to progress on my research and then everything happened all too quickly and I have now planned to take some leave. I remember when I was told that I had T1D, they threw so much information at me and I couldn't process it either. I was in hospital and due to COVID, hospitals were not allowing visitors at that time so I felt so alone. When they taught me about injections and insulin, I couldn't give myself the injections and had to get the nurses to do it because I was terrified and it made it all too real if I gave the injections to myself. When I was discharged, I was in hysterics when I got home, I had so many panic attacks and it felt like my life had come to a halt. My boyfriend also knew that I was panicking and ended up typing out everything that was being said by the educators - I am so grateful for that. Everyone says T1D is a marathon, not a sprint and with time, I hope that this message will start to sink in for me. I'm quite anxious and scared at the moment, but I know it will get easier. Thank you for sharing your experience, it really resonated with me

Hi Chelsea, our diagnosis stories sound very similar! Being diagnosed during my PhD was very stressful, as I'm sure you can relate. I also took a couple of weeks leave after my diagnosis to take time to figure things out. I found it very helpful. It took me a few months to get past my fear of needles. My boyfriend did my injections for me for the first couple of days because I just couldn't do it. I'm glad to hear you have a partner that is so supportive of you and willing to help you with this new diagnosis. Being all alone in the hospital because of COVID sounds so scary.
I 100% agree that diabetes is a marathon, not a sprint, but some days are more exhausting than others. There is no right/wrong way to feel or process your diagnosis. I found speaking to a counsellor very helpful. I went through all the stages of grief because I was grieving the healthier version of me. You can do all the things you used to do before T1D, but some things will take a bit more planning or effort than others. I hope you're doing well and please feel free to reach out with any questions or if you need support. 💙

Just stumbled into your video when searching for blood glucose monitors. I was diagnosed with t2d 6 months ago (I'm 52). It's a different type of diabetes as you may know by now. But I'm here to tell you another story. A good friend of mine was diagnosed with t1d at the age of 7, he's now almost 50 and has a perfectly normal life (appart from the insulin injections). He got married and had a kid. I hope that this little story gives you some comfort and courage to also lead a long and healthy life. Thanks for your testimonial. All the best.

Thank you so much Joao! That was a lovely story. We may have two different types of diabetes, but so much is the same! I hope you’re doing well 😊

I lost 50 pounds in 2 1/2 months :( I was diagnosed on sept 17th of 2021. Dka is How I found out as I spent 9 days in the icu. My left leg was paralyzed for 2 months from going into DKA and passing out in my back yard and I wasn’t found for 3 hours. I now suffer from “ Complex Regional Pain Syndrome”. My life has changed so much since that day. I struggle every day and my drs are soooooo lazy. They don’t want to help me get a pump at all. I just wanna give up some days

I have a question. The last like week or so I have been really thirsty and I’ve felt tired and weird for about two weeks. Should I go to the doctor? I don’t want to be dramatic or for people to think I am but I also want to be safe and healthy

I’m not a medical professional, but if you feel like something is wrong it’s always best to speak to your doctor. The test requires a blood draw and you would know the answer very quickly. Sending positive thoughts your way 💙

Hi, I love your video so encouraging. I am 14 years old and I just got diagnosed two weeks from this past Monday. I got diagnosed from going to the doctors and getting a blood work. My mom was getting concerned about me because my hair was red deck, but now it’s like really really dead And also I was drinking a lot and peeing a lot as well. So she took me to the doctors to get bloodwork and the doctor had me do a urine sample. And it turns out my A1c was 14+. When they actually like it to be below 5.5. The doctor called my mom and told her to rush went to the emergency room. This emergency room was in Lincolnton North Carolina. They took my blood sugar and said that it was 472 and they would like me to be around 80 to 120 so that is really high. And then we were told that this hospital doesn’t take kids so they had to drive me all the way to Charlotte over an hour away to take me to and we stay there for about three or four days for them to me and antibiotics. pumped me because I had some infections. And obviously, we had some training with the nutritionist, diabetes, educators, and endocrinologist. You’re right going through. This is going through the grief process first year in denial and you’re sad and angry and then you accept it. I feel like I am indeed denial and sadness and anger portion of this journey. It’s also hard because I’m used to being so independent considering the blind. And then I have to now have my mom or dad and checked me. It’s so frustrating. 15:26

I’m literally crying because I went through the same thing. Waking up at night to use the bathroom also being extremely thirsty losing crazy amounts of weight. I did ignore it and I was thinking I am fine but I wasn’t and now I need a insulin pump attached to my body because I was in denial and refused to see a specialist or go to the doctor to check myself out so please everyone get checked out it’s serious.
