    I had the exact same thing happen to me... I was in my quarantine groove, had the best control, then randomly had NO control for a week haha! That's typical diabetes :P . Love the video Andrea! Thanks for always being so real ❤️

      OH no!! Really!!?? I really feel you on the frustration of that - especially for myself I was like "oh my gosh, I am KILLING these quarantine blood sugars" but then..oh wait...NOT AT ALL! Though I wish it wasn't the case for you - your words do make me feel less alone! Thank you so much Michelle!! Sending you a Raffi big love and strength for the week ahead ❤️❤️❤️

      Loved your video, so informative and straight forward, you never said um once!! I have been T1D for 37 years, am now 74 yrs old. Your description of living on a needle mirrors my life so exactly. Raising 4 children with a demanding husband farmer (I've been farming since I was 8 years old) has been as you said an ups and down struggle. All the highs and mostly lows kept my life totally out of control no matter how hard I tried. After the end of farming my husband became a long haul trucker so I was trying to manage our home base mostly alone, not good for a diabetic. I'd come to on the floor after severe lows, rescues from my brother and my mother and even the fire department. My crazy life was finally rescued when my Dr pushed through the paperwork for me to start on a pump in 2010. As you said, such a new and terrifying experience to deal with, connected to a device forever. After 10 years and on my 2nd pump and almost due for my 3rd, my control and lack of lows has made life so much easier. I can feel a low coming long before I'm out of control. I also have thyroid and blood pressure issues under control so even in this pandemic, my last A1C was 6.5 and my Dr is extremely happy with me. There is still much life to live after good control!!

    Being veggie with diabetes must be a bit harder, my daughter doesn't eat meat every meal but it certainly fills her up in a more stable way we find. I noticed you still eat eggs, they are probably the most versatile food, today we had an omelette for lunch no bolus needed. She won't eat sliced avocado like you have, but got her eating guacamole recently, hummous shes always liked. New potatoes tend to be 15% carbs uncooked which is better than the bigger versions - why didn't you use scales? We save bananas more for exercise as they are handy energy boosts, breakfast foods more berries and apples.

    • @garycroft8213

      @Michael Carney with my daughter we consider GI but also glycaemic load, so fast, medium, slow carbs but in blocks of 5g if needed to avoid over corrections. Its good to know when insulin is peaking to work around that.

    not eating sugar foods and carbs goes a long way for control. I seen people just eat sugar and carbs and take more insulin, but they still get high BG numbers and spikes. Eggs, meats, greek yogurt cheeses, nuts, veggies, berries, and some low sugar fruits! Avoiding processed sugar foods, and carbs like potatoes, rice, bread, can really help to get your numbers under control quickly. Remember the less you spike 1-2 hours after a meal.. the better.!

    Great Video! You sure know how to keep us T1D engaged.. I felt like yelling at my screen to give you some advice.. Obviously, not possible and I'm really late in watching this video.. I too am trying to add some cardio into my life, especially when my sugars are out of control.. However, if you have access to weights or not, doing lounges really make a difference.. Also, I don't know how you eat so darn clean, I haven't scouted for it, but I'd be interested in more snacks you may divulge in.. My nighttime snacking is just out of control (hence how I stumbled on one of your videos!)

I hear you on the nighttime snacks situation...I've been doing a LOT of chocolate post-holidays and am trying to switch to Keto chocolate so the effects are less strong on my blood sugar readings but oh! I HEAR YOU! I often find when I'm eating late at night it's because I'm tired and actually should move my bedtime up and hour or so. That's just me, and I know it's not realistic for everyone, but that's my little tip!

    Hello, thank you for sharing this video. My 12 years old son just been diagnosed with Diabete 1.
    I did not know anything about Diabetes into about 6 days ago. So now counting carbs, checking glucose.... it started all felt very scary to start, just few days and I am alredy feeling more in control. By your video I think that little machine you have is a pump. And what you read in your phone may be what I seen on line called libra. 🤔 sorry if I am all wrong. I would really love to see a video that explains all the gadgets (if I am allowed to call then gadgets). What do you use and why you chosen then. How it works. What are the pros and cons about it. A video would help new people diagnosed and families to understand better.
    You are amazing I really enjoyed your video ❤

    How come your in the UK and you use mg/dl? I think mg/dl seems easier but ive only ever known mmol. I didnt think you had to minus the fibre from carbs on UK packaging, i thought that was only a US thing.

    • @ShesDiabetic
      @ShesDiabetic  4 года назад

      Great question! It is a little confusing how I do things...! Basically I'm American but I live in the UK, so I'm used to mg/dl but because the UK uses mmol/L I sometimes have to revert to that. And when it comes to fiber, I've never been taught differently from country to country, so I remove fiber weather I'm in the US or UK, but that's just me! I hope this helps answer your question - I know my situation is a little unique and can be, at times, very confusing!

      Oh! I'm so sorry to hear this! That is no fun at all!! I haven't personally experienced any particular hair loss in connection to diagnosis, but I will say I do have under active thyroid and when my levels are off that can have an effect on my hair. My hypothyroidism was diagnosed at exactly the same time as my Type 1 Diabetes (which is often the case, especially in women apparently) so I would maybe ask your doctor about this? Either way, I'd mention it to your doctor to see if there's anything that can be done/tested for because that is just no fun at all!! Wishing you all the very best my lovely friend!!

I take a few medications a day to keep things in check, but it seems nothing to what you have to do. Binge watching your videos a bit....so I do have a question...found out this year my niece is type 1 diabetic...I know for me (type 2) I have to watch my carbs so at least I don't have to take as much meds (metformin) to depend on...but I've had a bit of discussion with fellow diabetics in a facebook group....I thought carb control also applies to type 1 so you don't have to use as much insulin...but another member said...carb control doesn't apply as much to type 1, at least not as strict as to type 2...you just have to adjust the insulin accordingly...so...which one do you think is correct? I'm curious..thanks!

    • @ShesDiabetic
      @ShesDiabetic  4 года назад +2

      Oh thank you so much and welcome to my channel! You've touched on a bit of a hot button subject for diabetics everywhere - congratulations! Hehe! There are T1 Diabetics that eat very low carb to avoid BG spikes and then there are T1D's that eat relatively high carb & low fat plant based to improve their insulin sensitivities. Two very different schools of thought and ways of approaching control with T1D. In my mind, it's comes down to this: with T2 you can produce insulin and therefore you can minimize or in some cases even completely eliminate the medication you're on, whereas with T1D there's no insulin being produced and therefore you have to take medication no matter what. With that being said, it then becomes a lifestyle choice, given that you're going to have to take insulin as a type one diabetic - you must find the diet that works best with how you want to live, control your diabetes, and just generally the food that you enjoy and makes you feel good. That's a very short description of my own take of what you've brought up above. Everyone's feelings are different though - mine is only one. With regards to your niece, I'm sure this is a very overwhelming time for her, and if I can give advice to people dealing with my younger, recently diagnosed self, I would encourage you to give her the space she needs to make some decisions for herself. Especially if she's young, there may be a feeling of overwhelm on her behalf that she's lost all control and sense of normalcy. If it were me, I'd love to be assured that people are there for me, but to let me come to them, rather than encourage me to eat one way or another, if that makes sense? A gentle guidance through love and understanding. Maybe that's a lot to take on, and maybe I've over-answered here, but I hope that all makes sense. Above all, you are an incredible woman to want to help her and come here to do research on her behalf. It speaks to what a generous, kind soul you are. Really extraordinary. Thank you so much for your questions and for watching!! ❤️

I have been using an Inpen for the last 2 weeks it’s helped tremendously in the app it tells me how much insulin is still active . I currently take 1 unit of regular insulin for 30 carbs . Does the pump tell you how how much insulin is still active ? Love when my sugar is 97 . Thank you so much for your inspiration. I’m always chasing lows though the inpen is wonderful and has helped tremendously. I’m excited about getting the pump .. I think my first site will be the back of my arm . Thank you soooosoooosoooooooo much ❤❤❤

    You are such a sweetie! I have been watching you for a couple of weeks now and I always learn something important when I do. Today's watch from three years ago was a goldmine for me. I am 70, have type two diabetes, and I'm on an insulin pump. (Medtronic 780G) I've had it for a bit over a month and I'm still having a bit of trouble with the highs. I'm too old for your particular issue, but my gastroparesis will have the same effect on me. So, when my sugar is too high and I am not hungry, well, I just don't eat. I have often been told to eat several small meals throughout the day, but if I'm not hungry why pile on more? Anyway, this post made me feel better about my meal decisions. Glad I found you, Lynda

    Your videos always seem to get right to the point. Getting ready for the Minimed 780g which I'm getting in about another month and since no-one ever told me i could carb count rather than use plain "feel" or intuition for dosing my insulin I'm feeling a lot of support from videos like this, especially when you film operating your pump. 14 years into diabetes I'm just learning what my actual carbs per unit is. It's about 8 g carbs per unit in the day and 3 g in the early mornings. Feels good to know!

    • @ShesDiabetic
      @ShesDiabetic  3 года назад

      I'm so glad to know this was helpful to you - I feel the exact same way - I didn't know about carb counting until way later into my diagnosis and it felt like another valuable tool that I was so surprised I hadn't been made aware of before. That in combination with my pump has really helped my achieve better numbers, and I just wanted to share this - so thank you for your kind words!! I really am so glad and wish you all the very very best with your Minimed 670g! That's so exciting!!

    When you were at 100 with an arrow straight down, what made you confident that your blood sugar wasn’t going to start dropping faster? You just seemed so calm at that point! My boyfriend is diabetic, and if he was at 100 and dropping, we would be moving real fast to get him some carbs. Is it your experience that your pump administers insulin slowly enough that you don’t plummet so fast, or is there another reason you feel confident at 100 and dropping? My boyfriend still does shots, and sometimes I wonder whether that makes his blood sugar drop really quickly versus a pump.

    Hi, some things that might help with menstrual rises might be to limit carbs the week prior maybe instead of 50g a meal try 25 or 30 g of carbs. Maybe increasing the basal rate around the time you see constant spikes? 200s does not look too bad you seem well controlled and not insulin resistant, for people with poor control they might prescribe Glucophage XR (metformin) as it is an oral hypoglycemic agent that fights insulin resistance. I also read an article that sometimes the only true solution is birth control pills, which might pose other problems. Thanks for the positivity, I enjoy watching your videos!

    Just discovered this channel yesterday. I watch a lot of youtube diabetes channels. I'm sick of them saying we will show you easy diabetic meals to make and they turn out to be complex, expensive and really hard to track down the ingredients and usually what they make looks god awful. Your video about the chia seed pudding actually made me go out and buy the chia seeds and unsweetened almond milk and give it a try. It was cheap and easy to make It's in the fridge at the mom ent so I have no idea what it will taste like but it was quick, easy and no fuss. I'm hoping I get some more tips in this video because I'm sick of eating salmon, vegetables and avocados and nuts all day every day. I need variety

    hey Andrea! you eat so healthy and clean!! idk if you do this i'm guessing you do but a small tip for us girls who have to deal with t1D and periods - after a few months of adjusting and trying i have finally created a new basal rate just for my periods bcoz i spike quite a bit too almost 1.5-2 weeks prior to my periods. So the day i realise my sugars are spiking i change to basal rate 2(period version haha!) . Seems to work wonders - i mean there are still a few ups and downs but relatively much much lesser. Makes me feel more confident and in control of my BG. Oh and right after my period ends i shift back to the basal rate 1(regular one) as my sugars start dropping quite low. ANYHOW love you and love this video!!

    I usually put a kitchen scale under my plate and then weigh the foods as I put them on my plate. Then I'll put the information into the app Lifesum, and then when I'm done it'll give me the carb content of the whole meal.
    I'm pretty sure you can also create your own meals where you put in the ingredients you used and then it'll do the math for you. Then I can just weigh how much of my own recipe I'm eating and it'll know the exact nutrietiens

  • @Wandy4487
    @Wandy4487 4 года назад

    The app you showed looked great for the carb counting, I have one similar but I primarily use it for take out food from fast food chains if I eat there. At home I use a nutrition scale that my endo recommended and it made a gigantic difference for me. I have had it for quite awhile now so it is discontinued but this is the model (www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/starfrit-5-kg-nutritional-scale-0424201p.html). I also tried to find something equivalent in the UK but in my experience random scales on Amazon or in stores have not been entirely accurate so I would stick to an endo recommendation on brand and/or model.

And I'm so glad you took comfort from that saying - it's easier said than done, but sometimes the acceptance creates a healthier mind, and as a result - a healthier blood sugar too! Crazy how that works! Wishing you and your boyfriend all the very very best and I hope you enjoy the dating video! I have another one about to come out with David (my non-diabetic boyfriend) too! ❤️

    PMS week wrecks my numbers! I make soup throughout the month so I can cook less and relax more that week.
    Your videos make me feel normal and not a failure. ❤️

      Oh my goodness - soup throughout the month - that sounds like a STUPENDOUS IDEA!! I LOVE IT!!! I try to make big batches of things and pick from them, but oh - it is hard, isn't it! But more preparation makes it all feel a little more bearable - so that's a win! Thank you for what you said about the videos making you feel normal and not like a failure. That pretty much my entire goal of this channel and is the best compliment you could possibly give me. Just thank you. From the bottom of my heart - I'm so so grateful for your comment and for watching! You are not alone and you are loved! Remember this!!! 🥰🙏🏻💙

    Thanks for the video. It is good that you are trying to eat healthy. Don't hate me but some of what you eat is not good for diabetics. The American Diabetes Association allows for too many carbs currently but the new president of ADA is working to change that. It was once thought that fat contributed to type two diabetes (I know you are type one) and as a result in the past the ADA recommended low fat high carb diet. As a result the number of people with diabetes sky rocked. It is now know that high fat and protein and very low carb will lower blood sugar and control diabetes. Things to avoid 99% of the time are potatoes, rice, pastas, and certain vegetable (carrots). Your blood sugar was over 200 which is not good for your body. Since following a low carb diet my AIC dropped from 7.1 to 6.0 in 3 months. I try to keep carbs down to 30 or less a day. Too many carbs will rise your blood sugar resulting in you having to use more insulin, both which are not good for you. Currently medical treatment treats the symptoms of diabetes (high blood sugar) and not the cause (too many carbs for the body to handle.) In a sense diabetes is similar to alcoholism. Imagine a doctor telling an alcoholic that he can still have several drinks a day as treatment. That would be insane. But the ADA tells diabetics they can still have 60 or more carbs a meal and the result is an explosion of people with diabetes. For more information see "Beat Diabetes!" RUclips videos as well as Dr. Bernstein's videos. Oh, bananas are not good for diabetics. This is probably not what you are hearing from doctors and nutritionist but they are coming to realize that carbs are not a friend of diabetics. I have seen family members follow their doctors advise only to have their medications increased and insulin increased and blame it on their diabetes just getting worst. Other things to do are intermittent fasting (yea I don't like it either but it works). If you want to get off the diabetic treadmill, be proactive and not reactive. It is simple. Lower the carbs and heal your body. All the best to you.

      Thank you for your message. I personally have tried low carb and it caused me a lot of problems - both physically and emotionally and therefore I've found this way of eating that works well for me. Yes on this day I was over 200 and that's not 'good' but it's also the reality of living with a chronic condition that not every day will be exactly perfect. My A1C is tightly controlled and I'm happy with this way of eating personally, but I understand if other ways work better for other people. Do what works best for you I say! And I think you for sharing your experience with me and everyone else here! It just goes to show that everyone is different. Wishing you all the very best!

      @@ShesDiabetic Thank you for the reply, with CGM pump can take insulin automatically when the sugar levels goes high?

      @@harishviyyapu4278 you’re so welcome!!! with some systems this happens, but you still have to take insulin with meals.

      @@ShesDiabetic thanks for the reply, with 640G CGM communicates with the pump and transmit to the pump right. So with that info pump takes required insulin if sugar levels goes high? And stops releasing insulin if it is below 100?

    • @ShesDiabetic
      @ShesDiabetic  3 года назад

      @@harishviyyapu4278 if you’re referring to the Medtronic 640G, as far as I know this does not do this you need to have the Medtronic 670G, or the T slim X2 and they’re corresponding CGM‘s (with the Medtronic it’s their Medtronic CGM and with T slim it’s the Dexcom G6 CGM) there may be others, but those are the ones that I’m familiar with, your doctor should be able to help you more. What you want is a semi-close loop system, and I think it’s the best way forward if you’re starting a new pump nowadays as it’s the best tech on the market!

    Baby girl it’s the banana’s 🍌use strawberries or blueberries they are lower in sugar. I’m sure you love bananas but obviously they don’t love you back. I’m type 1 too but I stop eating bananas because I just couldn’t control the sugar spikes. Used bananas flavoring if you just the taste of banana.

    how much carbs do you think should be taken in a meal?
    You have really given the diet a lot of thought ,i wasn't doing that but now i will.

    • @ShesDiabetic

      I truly truly mean this when I say that I don't think there's any perfect number of carbs per meal. I really just prioritize having Whole Foods (for example, baked or boiled sweet potatoes, high quality bead without any sugars or additives, brown rice, beans, those kind of things). I feel great when I eat those, and have no problem at all with them, but of course it's so important that you find what works best for you, and I'm certainly no expert!! I hope this helps you!! 💙🙏🏻
