    I'll definitely be trying some of these out! When I was first diagnosed, the doctors thought I was still in the honeymoon phase when I definitely wasn't and they only gave me long-acting insulin, so I basically had to eat as low-carb as possible to keep my sugars from spiking into the 300s for like a month before I was finally prescribed short-acting, so I had to find low-carb foods fast!
    My low-carb staples are:
    -Riced broccoli/cauliflower - mix with some peppers or other veggies and add some spices and you've got a pretty awesome-tasting low-carb stir fry!
    -Turkey burgers and meatballs - Still a nice high-protein meat without as high of a cholesterol amount as beef
    -Mixed nuts - like carrots for you, this satisfies my need for something to crunch on without affecting my blood sugars much (I also highly recommend Wonderful's honey roasted pistachios. They taste incredible and are only 7g of carbs per serving!)
    -Sugar-free Jello - doesn't do much health-wise, but helps satisfy a sweet craving and it's 0g!
    -I'm gonna double down on eggs because they're incredible lol
    -Low-sugar Greek yogurt like Two Good or Oikos Triple Zero
    -Cheese crisps! Also sometimes I'll just eat slices of fresh mozzarella because that stuff is amazing
    -Also doubling down on dark chocolate! Another suggestion I have is if you like chocolate-covered nuts to get a square or two of dark chocolate and eat it with the nuts instead of buying chocolate-covered nuts because the chocolate-to-nut ratio will be lower without you feeling like it is (if that makes any sense).

    • @ShesDiabetic
      @ShesDiabetic  3 года назад +4

      These are all SUCH excellent suggestions Lora - thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to put this all together!! I'm so sorry you went through all that when you were first diagnosed - my gosh it sounds like you really adjusted quickly out of necessity of course, but I think you should be so proud of yourself! I'm a big riced cauliflower fan! And oh - I'm going to have to try those honey roasted pistachios STAT - I LOVE pistachios and honey roasted!!! Mother May I!!! Thank you once again for taking the time to share all of this - absolutely wonderful!!!

    Love and agree with everything! I’ve really gotten into making my own foods from scratch (Yogurt and bread in the instant pot for example). I find that the cleaner I eat, the lower my levels are in general. Also it helps mentally by known what work it takes to make a specific food so it helps me not over eat. Thanks for the video!

The low carb frozen chocolate pie sounds awesome - and given that it's frozen hopefully you can make a big one and chip away at it without it going bad? And with fruit...YUM!! PS - I LOVED Wendy's Frosties...we had the free keychain and I would get the tiny ones all the time...then I had to give up dairy and away those went - but OH!! SO GOOD!!!!

    Thanks for sharing! You have a beautiful energy and you're a joy to watch. I also have been really into the lemon ginger drink lately, I have it in the morning and I do a few thin slices of ginger. When I'm done with the drink the ginger is soft from the hot water and I actually eat it. Sooo good for digestion. Or I put it in a smoothie later. And I always have a generous supply of dark chocolate in my house too. Priorities 😅
    Some of my go-to's throughout the day are sliced cucumber and carrots with a few kalamata olives and vegan feta cheese (the brand Violife, so so good). Fresh fruit with nuts or nut butter. Larabars. Avocado toast + eggs for breakfast. Salmon + veg + sweet potato for dinner. I also like to make big salads with fresh veggies, almonds, olives, and whatever else sounds good - I usually make enough for a few servings at a time. Meal prep is really helpful with t1d 💗💗💗

    Great video, fewer carbs is a essential for control and longevity in diabetes. "low Carb" is such a broad term that it can mean anywhere from 10 grams of carbs/day to 500 grams or more to some. Would you share your macros(Fat/protein/carb) for your average day? What HbA1C are you comfortable maintaining?

    • @ShesDiabetic
      @ShesDiabetic  3 года назад

      I don't have any macro goal I'm trying to hit per se, I find that (for me personally) it's not very good idea to get to obsessed with that kind of thing, otherwise it can tip into an unhealthy obsession. But that's totally just a personal thing. I like to keep my HbA1C between 5-6 regularly. I hope this helps! 💙

      @@quadgirl1011 I try to be consistent and eat literally the same meal every day (sizing and protein content). Generally based on my weight and height I need 14-16 oz of animal protein a day. I split that into 2 meals and do intermittent fasting. Fasting is also incredibly important, you see the difference in insulin requirements after a 16 Hr fasting. In regards to carbohydrates my goal is less than 30g a day. Generally in two 15g meals. However those 15g are always from vegetable and or nut/seeds sources. I would not eat a 15g slice of bread as it would shoot my blood sugar out of range. If you want to learn more check Dr. Bernstein Diabetes University on RUclips he has videos explaining this approach in great detail. If you have complications they tend to fully reverse after a few years of euglycemic range. For me took 24 months to recover my eGFR to non diabetic levels (around 100). Before I had subclinical DKD as he describes eGFR of 84.

    Since I 'discovered' almond milk I rarely use regular milk anymore. I seem to have always gone high when I have cereal in the morning with regular milk but it doesn't happen much anymore. If I go low, milk is, for a reason I can't fathom, faster than OJ at rectifying the situation. I also tried almond flour pancakes this morning, but I didn't realize how many fewer carbs they had than normal pancakes and ended up going low. It's so expensive (IMHO) at $5.88/lb I probably won't buy it often. If all the paperwork is approved I'll be getting a Tandem pump soon so I won't have to stab myself 4x/day. I'm also going to start carb counting and started a log today to share with the dietician (video conference a week from Monday). Just my personal thought process! If you’ve also ever made something similar at home you can ramp up that carb count (because they’ll be more sugar, carbs, etc in the takeout version) and use that kind of as a sliding scale? Hi Christine! Sure! I hear you on the curiosity front - of course I'm the exact same! Basically I started eating eggs and fish and meat because I was having horrendous stomach problems and was no longer able to tolerate the amount of fiber a vegan diet comes along with. I'm still battling stomach problems but am able to get more energy from my food by introducing more animal sources. This has been very difficult for me because I so so so loved eating in a vegan way, and still am obsessed with my veggies - but just can't tolerate them in the quantity you need to ensure you're getting all the necessary vitamins and minerals, at least at this point in my health journey. • @darioflood7326
      @darioflood7326 3 года назад +1

      If you’re not eating big dinners (over 90g of carbs) you’ll probably need more long acting insulin.
      If you’re eating big dinners (over 90g carbs), you will need to split your insulin injections. I usually assume 30g carb digestion per hour, which means I’ll inject for the first 90g, then 3 hours later I will inject for the rest.
      ** remember, rapid acting insulin (e.g. novorapid) is typically effective for about 3 to 4 hours, hence the 90g for the first split.

    • @ShesDiabetic
      @ShesDiabetic  3 года назад

      Dario raises some absolutely excellent points above. I would look at what you're eating for dinner, and perhaps try something different/lower in carb/take more insulin with it. However, if your blood sugar is stable post dinner, and only rising in the middle of the night, you may want to look at increasing your long acting (or basal rates) overnight so that you can avoid those spikes, especially if they're happening on a consistent basis regardless of what you eat for dinner, say. I hope this helps!! 💙
