Its called a library because of the original fantasy of the game. You are a wizard who memorizes spells (drawing cards) from your library (your deck). You draw energy from the leylines of the various planes youve visited (lands)

The term Cantrip comes from dungeons and dragons and refers to spells that don't cost a spell slot to use, but might still require Verbal, Somatic, and very rarely Material Components.
At the time of magic's release, when most players were coming over from D&D, like the creator himself, it was felt that cards in hand was analogous to spell slots and so a card that replaces itself with a new card from your deck is essentially equivalent to a spell that costs no slots.

    • @Sauvenil

"don't cost a spell slot to use" They do cost a spell slot, but they were given a "level 0" slot... at least in 2nd Edition, haha.

@@goreobsessed2308 it’s when a player takes a very long time to make a decision. ‘They’re in the tank hard deciding how to block’. The opposite in poker would be a ‘snap’ (snap call, snap fold, etc.), which we do use in Magic too, but usually only with mulligan decisions (snap keep, snap mull). @theVtuberCh 4 дня назад +5

@@MastaJuggalotus Singleton is WOTC’s term for highlander because they can’t say highlander because of trademark issues.

An MDFC is *not* any card with another card on the back. There are 88 MDFCs and 346 TDFCs, which also came first. There are also 12 meld cards, with half a big magic card on the back.
(TDFC stands for Transforming Double-Faced Card. Instead of being able to cast either side, you can only cast the front*, and there is some way to "transform" it to flip it over. Some TDFCs can flip back and forth and others only transform once.)
(The meld cards come in 6 pairs where if you control both you can meld them together into the card on the back)
*TDFCs with disturb are cast transformed from the graveyard, sieges are cast transformed from exile when they are defeated, The Transformers cards** can be cast transformed for their More Than Meets the Eye cost and are effectively modal and transforming*** except the rules don't work that way.
**Except Grimlock, a silver-bordered promo that came before the other ones
***Transformers (including Grimlock) "convert" instead of "transform" because Hasbro tries to argue that "Transformers" isn't too generic to be trademarked.

Yugioh is the same with "old card becomes the basic term." MST (Mystical Space Typhoon) is anything that can remove a single spell/trap from the field (either a quick-play spell or a monster with a trigger effect), Compulse (Compulsory Evacuation Device) is anything that can return a target to the hand. Reborn (Monster Reborn) is anything that summons a monster from the graveyard. ROTA (Reinforcement of the Army) is anything that adds a card from a specific type/archetype from deck to the hand, etc. MST hasn't seen much play since Twin Twisters (discard a card to pop TWO spells/traps!) and Cosmic Cyclone (pay 1000 LP to BANISH a spell/trap!) got released in 2015/2017, but it will always live on as the generic term for popping backrow :)
Other cards have their nicknames, too, like Compulse, Imperm, Ash (and Ash-Forehead and Ash-Feet to specify which art...), MST, ROTA (pronounced ROH-tah), because of course :) And some make less sense, like Spellbook Magician of Prophecy is "Blue Boy."
We still use the standard mill/spin/pop/bounce terms from the early days of MTG (and other TCGs).
