a guy watching me deadlift asked me if I ever did competition's because my form looked real good. I said no I just watch a guy on RUclips for all my form advice... thanks Brian!
Man really appreciate you doing this.I love your videos,I personally feel you are one of the most genuine guy in RUclips for training. Keep posting. :)
THANK YOU for these! I made my own sheets for each lift and it was super helpful. My fav takeaways: Squat - press out of the hole bench- Row under the bar to set lats Deads - STAY TIGHT and pack the lats Thanks again Brian!
You're the man, man! Your advice clicks with me 100% of the time. I've been close-grip benching since your video on it, and my close grip has gone up 50lbs; I can't wait to see how it'll transfer to my comp bench! And now I just want to go deadlift, haha. Thank you for being on youtube, Brian!
You are a great great teacher sir. I’ve learned everything I know about powerlifting from you. Heading to NeverSate.com 🎶right about now🎶 for some apparel purchasing. I’ll rep your gear w/pride. Be well and thank you Sensei 🙏🏾
Every time I watch one of your videos I’m like “yea ok this looks good” *click* and I always always get new ideas and it just blows my mind and I’m so grateful! Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge and ideas.
I love your videos Brian, delivered with enthusiasm, confidence and wit! You are my favourite strength and fitness RUclips'er as your content is just great. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Man, I have watched tons and tons of videos from the best guys (Thrall, Cavaliere, Nippard) and though they had good advice, you have such a great way of explaining things and demonstrating with examples and easy to understand cue. This one was super helpful-the squat cue list was a real game changer for me. Thank you!
This is the best advice I’ve heard. I might have heard similar cues so maybe it was the way you explained it. I just attempted a PR today with 4 plates (lifting for 13 months so yeah I have a ways to go) using your PR % jump video advice. Worked really well till 405 happened and now reflecting I realize I did not feel as tight as you explain here. I have tried belly breaths at the top rather than below and I feel so much more uncomfortable doing it this way but this 405 I didn’t do that so I’m guessing that was my issue. You’re my fave youtuber Brian. So glad you’re making these. I’m learning daily. Thanks so so much for real.
This is a super helpful video man!! I'm 19 and haven't ever done powerlifting type training but I hit a 525 deadlift at 165 bodyweight last week and put up a vid of it thinking it was a lot but seeing what people are capable of, I have some work to do and now am trying to make that an even more stronger lift. THANK YOU!!!!
I always use the bar to pull myself into the start position for the deadlift....and your right it' feels like really high blood pressure ...but thats how I lift the most....Thanks for the tips Brian
The squat video helped me better than any other video. It completely eliminated any lower back tightness i use to get after heavy squats (or lighter weight higher reps for hypertrophy). Im definitely gonna use these cues for the deadlift! I already know its gonna help. My biggest issue for the Dl is my grip. Im good at activating my glutes and quads, thus leaving my lower back out of it
this whole time ive been thinking of lifting the bar,but pushing my legs into ground without a bar i see already how much more force there is.I'm coming for u unicorn gains left in the ether!!!
Top notch tips on the setup!! Brian you are the best. Thanks so much for passing on the wisdom to help the rest of us Squeeze the bar like there is no tomorrow :-) Need to get the breathing thing figured out, I'll search your archives.
The deadlift is one of my favorite lifts and there's always something new to think about. Never thought about trying to wedge myself between the bar and the floor. Congrats on hitting 60K!!
This is the best deadlift video I have seen so far, very excited to watch the in depth video! I mainly do bodybuilding but I love the content you're putting out. I use to deadlift very frequently and got up to pulling 425lbs. Weighing 155, I thought I was doing it right and thought as long as your back is straight your fine. Can't wait to use these tips and get back up to lifting some damn weight!
Awesome information thank you Brian! I watched your How to deadlift series, the Breathing and Bracing..Youre doing it wrong video, and this one about half an hour before my deadlift session, and i just smashed my PR by 15KG!! i was stuck at 190kg, now im up to 205! Fuck yeah!
Keep doing what your doing Brian you keep it light (excuse) the pun , I mean your delivery is great and you do not take yourself to seriously but you are passionate about what you do and helping people , that is the recipe for your success so keep it up, oh another former strong man competitor and trainer with a channel who has had Omar on is Elliott Hulse see if you can reach out to him and do a guest appearances. Best wishes from South Australia mate.
Hey, Brain! I see that you're trying to get strong. You should try out Mark Rippetoe's general strength 5x5 program. If you do it for a year, I bet you'll add slabs of muscle to your frame, and gain 100lbs on all of your lifts! It will make you as strong as an animal!!! I'm kidding, by the way hahaha. This is such a great video. Im actually deadlifting today, so I'll try this out! Thanks!
Brian, I aprreciate the amazing content you put out every week. I know you're going to do a cheat sheet for OHP aswell, but can you please do one for Bentover Rows too? I've watched your comprehensive video on bentover rows, but a cheat sheet would help A LOT. Have a good one
Guys I just brought one of Brian's programme I've done it for a week and it's the toughest gym programme but the best I've ever done. I 100% recommend it. You won't regret it
This video couldn't have come at a better time for me. I've noticed that my deadlift needs work and that my set up definitely doesn't feel right. I've got a deload week next week, so I can work on shoring up those holes in my set up!
This series is simply awesome. Thanks a lot for the tips Brian :D. I have only one question: What do you think of t&g deadlifts? I can do way more volume this way and recover better..
Thanks man. awesome illustration and explanations. Will try and keep the bar touching legs. My knees sometimes get in the way on the way down only,... for some reason :|
Deadlift is my favorite lift, but I've been having some technique issues with it lately. Can't wait to use this to get to 700! It's only 200lbs away...
What is your recommendation for how to re-breathe and brace in between reps/within a set? I think you mentioned holding your air for the whole set but I find that when doing sets of 5 deadlifts at 80+% 1rm I just can't do that and maintain pressure (or consciousness for that matter). I apologize if this was already covered somewhere, I went through all (I think) of your DL videos and the breathing and bracing one again to check and didn't see any such advice.
Hey Brian thanks for the cues ! try to keep them in mind next time! Do you feel a difference training with your weightlifting shoes on to train barefoot (flat sole shoe)? Or why do you wear your adipowers all the time?! ^^
How do you adjust your setup when you're using straps? I really like the "lower your body as if performing second rep" cue, but when I have to bend over and take the time to strap in I can't figure out how to get into as good a position
Thoughts on replacing normal deadlift with the trap-bar deadlift? I have been normal deadlifting for 4 years but recently went to a new gym with the trap-bar. I tried it and I feel much more safe and secure vs the normal bar.
Brian, have you ever switched gyms and lost strength? Everything is a little bit different at my new one (it's more set up like yours which I like) and my bench has suffered.
Love your videos. Got a question though I've watched your how you started your fitness journey and noticed this is with a lot of naturally skinny dudes is that you put on muscle not fat. So my question is I've always been a dude that's been on the husky side all my life and can gain 20 pounds in a month if needed because I gain weight with out any training so my question is why is it that naturally skin guys become monsters and us fat dudes stay fat no matter how much we try to lean out?
Hey Brian I was watching Brian Shaw DL and some of the other big guys (not that you aren't big you are). When they DL they somewhat have the bar way from them and roll it toward them so that are practically sitting back when they are set up. It almost seems for the initial lift its almost like they are squating to get the bar moving off the ground. What are your thoughts on this technique? Just curious what your take is.
I have a question; can anyone offer their advice? The main problem I am having with my deadlifts is that by the time I setup, my quads are absolutely burning, and I haven't even pulled the bar for a rep yet. Any suggestions to help with this problem, aside from maybe becoming quicker on my setup?
Brian I have chronic low back pain from a herniated disc at L5, S1. Been to PT and it's really just something I need to work around. Not bad enough for surgery but still hurts on a daily basis. For a while now I haven't been able to get into a position to deadlift without pain. Any suggestions on how to work around this or other exercises you suggest since deadlift might not work for me anymore? I've tried rack pulls and it still puts too much pressure on my low back.
Fitness Enthusiast warm up and stretch and work on your abs! A strong core will help you brace! I have the same issue but for squats and deadlifts I spend 10-20 mins on warm up and mobility and then do abs to help support my core! Works for me maybe can for you
I notice in the beginning of the video you are lifting without any shoes on then deadlifting throughout the video with addipowers on, that have a raised heel. Should I go barefoot or use the addipowers? I have had people tell me to go barefoot because you want to be as close to the ground as possible and others say wear the addipowers for heel support.
What about sleep..... What if you have chronic insomnia!!?? Seriously...I have had cancer, heart failure, and massive stroke... doctors don't care about sleep.....do you have ANY advice????!!!!
@@BrianAlsruheOfficial WOW....thanks for the response....I will find the video and check it out.....I am just about to head out and try that deadlifts cheat sheet video you did....my dead is around 550 now, used to be 600....not bad for a 57 year old...I also do singles with the SS yoke bar squats with 620....the SSB is basically my religion now ...squats,good morning ex,shrugs, etc. Thanks to you!!!
Maybe unrelated, but do you have any experience with dizziness/lightheadedness from lifting? I know it can happen when you're lifting heavy, but even when I pull 135 pounds as explosive as you did in this video, I need to sit down and breathe slowly. Any tips on this?
one of the best deadlift videos I have ever seen, your a natural teacher my dude
Your next shirts need to have the quote "Don't leave pounds in the ether" on them.
Mike Rodriguez Holy crap yes!!
Out there with the unicorns!
Or 'squeeze the bar like it owes you money'

i absolutely love way Chris Duffin coaches deadlift, but this video is breddy good too
Wow that beginning. So much room for improvement.
The deadlift is one of my favorite lifts and there's always something new to think about. Never thought about trying to wedge myself between the bar and the floor. Congrats on hitting 60K!!

Josh Johnston Right? 315 is INSANE. But seriously, this video is gold. I maxed on my deadlift today because of it.
MrSocialish nice! Honestly, Brian's channel completely changed the way i look at my lifting. Dude is golden as far as i'm concerned.
