Using the dev console or any form out of bound camera, all decorative globes inside of buildings contain a massive portion of land between Alaska and Russia (which is probably a badly reconnected texture, although they do indicate an island almost the same size of Australia). If Great Bear belongs to the pacific ocean then it most likely is a super-sized version of the Diomede or St. Lawrence islands

no its not. Its in british columbia in canada. The old mans beard lichen grows on the north east coast of the pacific ocean (south alaska, southwest yukon and west british columbia). The place used to be suitable for agroculture (many farms in the game obviously prove that)
LOL, it even also happens that there is a national park called the great bear island in british columbia. Coincidence?

If I recall, one of the older survival mode intro screens specifically said that your plane went down in Northern British Columbia (coast). Also to note, the developer's older roadmap from a few years ago had mentioned some "possible updates to the game if time permitted." A couple potential features would have been a complete seasons system which would include snow melting away in warmer weather, as well as potentially growing a crop for sustainability.

The game takes place in a post apocalypse setting where a sun flare took out all electronics and made both nature and animals much more fierce so it explains the colder than usual weather and in the long dark the winter never ends, supporting the post apocalypse theory more and as others said there is fire lookouts, summer camps and several farms meaning the weather on the island was better before the apocalypse.

Another clue worth noting is that the Old Mans Beard Lichen found on trees in-game say “A lichen found in the ancient forests of the Pacific Northwest”. Another thing is that I believe in the lore of the game, the Aurora messed with Mother Nature as well as the harsh climate and weather of Great Bear Island if I am not mistaken so that could be a plausible reason for the drastic temperature differences.

As a resident of BC, I always picked one of the Haida-Gwaii islands as being the likeliest candidate, as the game appears to take place on or near the SOUTH coast of the island it's on, and the south coast of Vancouver Island is dominated by the metropolitan city of Victoria, BC, and Victoria has the warmest weather and least amount of snow in all of Canada, and is the site of the Provincial Capital of BC, again, Victoria, which has a population last I heard, of over 350,000 people. Nowhere, on the south coast regions of the map, have we encountered this city or anything even remotely close to it.
The Haida-Gwaii Islands (formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands) is a small archipelago of islands, including some large enough to represent Great Bear Island, along the northern coast of BC, near the Alaskan Panhandle. Given the scenario of TLD, it's very plausible, if the Quiet Apocalypse is turning into the beginning of a major glaciation in the Pleistocene Ice Age, then those islands could very plausibly see the freezing temperatures and lack of summer that we see in The Long Dark. They were fully glaciated during the last major glaciation about 10 thousand years ago.

The problem I have is that great bear island feels tiny. It doesn’t seem like if it was an irl island it would be any larger than Narau. On great bear island, there is only 1 town, a village, some trailers, some mines, a cannery, a tiny airport, a railroad system, and some other thing in desolation point. There really isn’t much. Vancouver has big cities.

I always thought it was in the northwest territories...the no-trees part really threw that idea in the trash XD. Although we have even more proof of your claim too - the cowichan sweater, said in game to be designed by the First Nations people of BC. Looking it up, the Cowichan people even live on Vancouver island and knit them themselves, so there's no calling any normal sweater a cowichan unless it's actually from them.
Though, isn't great bear supposed to be remote? Like the only way you're getting there is by boat or plane, right? I'd like to think Vancouver is pretty well connected but I haven't been yet. Probably a fictional island further north.

As an Islander who grew up on the northern outskits of Courtney-Comox on Vancouver Island. I always just kinda knew The Long Dark was in BC (British Columbia). But found it's more remoteness to mean it was most likely within or close to the Haida Gwaii chain or close to the pan handle in the few islands that America didn't steal away are. As even the north bit of the island up near Port Hardy feels more developed than Great Bear Island. Also, weather on the island... Vancouver island, is rarely even close to the same weather, even in a apocalyptic event, I feel like there would have to be an event like one in the Frostpunk universe to get the Island that cold. But either way, I'm just glad there's a little bit of my childhood home area within such a well liked game, and fictional or otherwise, I love Great Bear Island just as much as Vancouver Island... though sometimes I wish everyone wasn't like Greymother in my old hometown.

I'm a resident of BC, and from a local perspective, there's a 0% chance of Great Bear being where Vancouver Island is. First off, the playable part of the island is along the south coast, which on Vancouver Island IRL is dominated by BC's provincial capital of Victoria, which is a large city of at least 350,000 people. Great Bear is a largely forgotten island, and no way the seat of the provincial Legislature would forgot their own homes.

Vancouver has a large swath of territory called Great Bear Rainforest, and along its western coastline there are islands, some large, some small. Unless Raphael tells us specifically we
can only speculate, but surely this area is the inspiration. Banks Island has both whaling, and mining industries, so it might be a candidate. As far as temps, they are noted as being
that low due to "the event", and we can see that the place once had industry which could not exist in it's present "in game" state.

Based on everything you talked about I wanna say it's a combination of all 3 areas... Vancouver Island gives the inspirational look....the northern isles inspire the temps (with it being a post apocalyptic being the reason for the EXTREME temps) and the Newfoundland area giving the snowy effects as again the PA being the cause for the blizzards and stuff to last longer

  • @collinmc90
    @collinmc90 Год назад +4

I always thought the extreme cold was part of the apocalypse event in the long dark. I feel like it's obviously a combination of places around BC mostly on the coast / islands. one thing in particular is that people in Canada refer to the southern area of bc as the "mainland". and from living on an island myself in the same region we also called anything off the island "over town" or "the mainland". you can hear and read about "the mainland" several times in the game. I feel like it's an obvious nod to it being located somewhere in the south west B.C. region. I feel like the only reason we don't see more populated areas presented in the game is only because A. it wouldn't be as fun for a survival game and B. they just haven't added those regions yet.

There's a constellation in the TLD's night sky that looks very close to the Acrux, which can only be seen from southern regions. Maybe I'm mistaken, but if it is truly Acrux, that would be interesting.

I buy the idea that Vancouver island inspires the look. However, I think the character of the people and the economy more closely matches Newfoundland. Newfoundland is famous for its culture of independence, and the fact that it’s economy has already been destroyed by the destruction of the fisheries industry by international industrial fishing fleets. Tthere are abandoned settlements all over Newfoundland. So Great Bear may be a mix of both coasts.

I was thinking it could be somewhere near the Rocky Mountains - some remote settlements, high mountains, freezing cold. I grew up in northeastern British Columbia, and temperatures could get down to -20 and even -50 on a rare occasion.
Another sign that the game is on the west coast is that the gas station is called "Orca," which is a West Coast symbol. :)

I'm pretty sure it's always been clear to the developers that "Great Bear Island" was a fictional island off the coast of northern B.C. The Great Bear rainforest region is a real location in B.C., and there are a LOT of islands off the coast. I think they chose not to make it a specific island like Haida Gwaii for a reason -- and one of the reasons may have been out of respect for Indigenous peoples, including (but not limited to) the Haida nation. Making it a fictional island also gives them leeway for map creation, and gives players more mystery because they won't have real world maps to rely upon.

There are Orchards and Hay Fields. You don't grow Hay and orchards in below freezing. Also logs are in the Bay but the Ice is around them so it must be a sign it was a Warmer Climate at some point. One last thing not all houses have sources of Heat in them so some Cabins must have been Summer/Vacation places. Something happened to cause an "Ice Age" so to speak.

Not really off anything but map design, I’ve always thought it was Banks island slightly north of Vancouver island. I remember early access there being a loading screen or something that mentioned British Columbia. Still I’m glad that other people think it’s on the west coast too. Absolutely love the long dark and great video

If you go to the Forsaken airfeild terminal you can see posters for Coastal highway, Desolation point and Mystery lake and it is shown in them that great bear is a warm climate in the summer.
(I also really want those posters)
Edit: i should also note that the fish could've migrated to another location due to the auroras messing with wildlife behaviour.

how do you know the game is set to be col all year round? maybe they designed the game thinking people would only play for 30-90 days so they set it permanently to be in the winter.. they may have assumed by that time either you would die or you will have done everything and quit. due to developer limitations of money and game mechanics they might find its easier just to not add seasons.. fallout 4 doesnt have seasons.. its permanently one season... i believe this isnt because of the apocalypse setting its in but because they didnt want to add it or couldnt. its the same in 7 days to die. its set as biomes.. desert, forest, snow, wasteland.. it stays the same no matter how long you play. so based on this, i feel you are wrong that this game is set in a place that is permanently winter, it just so happens that it is permanently winter because they couldnt be bothered to add seasons to the game... i feel like im repeating myself - sorry im not good at being concise

Absolutely love this video! I’ve often found myself trying to place the game’s setting as well, and I came to about the same conclusion. I live in British Columbia on the west coast, and I also tried using the animals to inform my guess. The salmon, black bears, wolves, deer (which look a lot like elk), rainbow trout and so on all made me think of Vancouver island, especially since there are no grizzly bears in the game, which are notably absent from the island. The smallmouth bass in the game, which are native to eastern Canada, also supported this actually, because they are an introduced species over much of the island’s south! But there were a few though that didn’t quite fit, like how moose and whitefish are not present on the island, and same with the new burbot and goldeye. Another potential region I thought about was the great lakes, like lake Superior, as it is big enough to have large islands, and also has many of the same animals. Black bears, wolves and elk are all present, and even rainbow trout and coho salmon are introduced to the lake. If Great Bear were a fictional island on lake Superior, the moose, burbot and whitefish would all make sense then as well. Then again, they did also add red Irish lord and rockfish, which are only found on the west coast here, so I’d say they’re drawing inspiration from both regions, and probably not as focused on placing the map in a real location as I am lol. When I looked, some plants like cedar trees and wild roses are found in both regions as well. Anyways, it’s always neat to see other people having fun and sharing their curiosity and enthusiasm for the game!
