My husband and I once ate at a steak house that served sweet tea in mason jars. I asked our waitress if I could buy the jar I'd used, and she politely said no. She also apologized profusely and explained why the jars weren't for sale. I assured her that I understood and wasn't upset, but she kept apologizing and explaining. It made me wonder how many Karens had gone off on her about the jars. So, we left her an extra big tip. 😊

"No matter how big you make the sign, they will not read it"
FUCKING TRUE. Years ago I worked at a gas station. The cooler at my store died. We put up signs on each door into the building. On each door of the cooler. And at each register. Saying that the coolers were out and nothing was cold. A man comes up complaining that the beer wasn't cold. I told him that the cooler wasn't working. He said there should be signs.
I just point at the one on my register, then at the doors, then motioned towards the bank of cooler doors 'You passed by literally 15 signs that say the cooler is out. You had to pass one to get in. One was in your face as you opened the cooler door. There are signs.'
He didn't like that and left. The great thing about that job is that it was a franchise, and the manager (owners son) did NOT fucking care, and did NOT appreciate rude customers. So we really had a lot of room to just sass the rude customers to hell and back.

Regarding restaurant employees, I'm from NYC where your service is either wonderful or horrible. Shortly after having my first child, I wanted to take my mother out to eat. I timed it perfectly(so I thought). She was fed and was taking a nap(which were always pretty long. We ordered our food and were drinking our drinks(non alcoholic). Before the food came, my baby woke up kinda fussy. Which was weird cause she wasn't a fussy baby and the restaurant wasn't crowded(after lunch rush, but before dinner rush). I grabbed a bottle from my diaper bag, but it was extremely cold. I got the waiter's attention, apologized and said we needed everything to go. He asked if there was a problem and could he help in any way. I explained everything to him and he replied, give me a minute. To my surprise he returns with a huge pitcher filled with extremely hot water(the water they give you when you order hot tea). He placed her 🍼 bottle in the pitcher to warm it up. He really went above and beyond. Then asked, do you want to stay now or should we pack everything up?? We stayed!! This was 22 years ago and I still remember him fondly. We had such a great time and the food was great!! My bill was about $60.00. I left him a tip of $30.00. My mother thought I was CRAZY, but to this day I never regretted it! (He did alot of nice things besides the water, but that's what I remember most!! PLEASE PEOPLE OF THE 🇺🇸 USA, TIP YOUR WAITERS/WAITRESSES! That's a nice story but your comment makes no sense. What's up with Americans encouraging slave labour?

As a single woman who often likes to go out to eat alone, I am SO appreciative of servers who go out of their way to treat me like a human being. Also having worked as front desk and a telemarketer for a while, I can attest to the abuse customers will give you, and it is basically your job to take it. I never did. Never could. Anytime someone had a scream-fest on the phone, or used swear words, or anything I found hurtful, I would tell them (sometimes having to talk over them) that I didn’t appreciate when they were saying, would not serve them, and will be hanging up now. Can’t get written up if you inform them of what you’re doing and why. 😉

If too many retail workers greet you, as in your story, it feels as though everyone collectively thinks you've come to magnificently and obviously shop lift, or going to rob someone at the tills because yeah you look seriously shady. It's always a better shopping experience when about ONE floor worker greets or nods at you. Then you know they know you're here and looking at stuff. And if I need help, I'll always ask, politely. I'll even wait politely if the worker is already busy. It's called being an adult.

@Allison Fisher oh darling oh Darling. They're that way throughout retail.
Absolutely hilarious. Everyone in my store hated working sundays. Even the management. Between us managers, we would all break it up so one of us had to work a Sunday. What was a real bargaining tool, I was on salary. If you wanted me to work your sunday, but then I would get off the next Monday as well.
So hilarious. We had this very evil Christian woman. She was well known throughout the books-a-millions. Looking for specialty bibles. And specialty religious works that we didn't carry on the shelf.
One day she came in sunday, her son, about to graduate. I met him when he was in 10th grade. Bless his heart to have a mother like her. She reminds me of the type to be no wire hangers, evil. And the kind that would make you kneel on a board to thank God for forgiveness for looking at another girl. Like she was scary.
The specific Sunday, my whole staff is wearing black. She asks me standing up front as I'm looking up a certain title, is everyone here devil worshipers? She asks me. I laughed and said excuse me. She said well everybody is wearing black. the only reason to wear black is because you worship Satan.
I literally laughed out loud. And immediately came up with a scheme. Because guess what we actually had the title she was looking for. She was very by the book. She knew the rules and we had to show her to the book and put it in her hand.
One of my employees she's always eager to help was going to show her and I said no no it's okay. I have this. Walking around the counter. Showing her to her book. I proceeded to point. And sit there it is. She firmly says, pick it up and put it in my hand. I looked at her and said, you'll have to pardon Me. I cannot. And I said.. it burns my fingers. And looked worried and overly emotional about it. And walked away.
Of course she threw a fit immediately grabbed her son and walked out. A couple of my employees were hanging around came around the bookshelves and started laughing. I can't believe you did that. You might get in trouble. I laughed and said no, I've never been in trouble. And, I keep this store in bonus, balance, and I work Sundays. So, I will not lose my position don't you fret.
District manager comes in. Scolding me. I didn't mind at all. My boss laughed. I tried not to to be professional. But I did smile.
Telling the district manager you know who she is by name because of how bothers them she is. You have even discussed how is it that you can get a person banned from the store. So, forgive me she set me up she has to follow my employees were devil worshipers because they wear black. She's the most evil Christian woman I've ever met. Now she'll never ever look my way. Nor will she come into the store.
Well. She sent her son. Oh he spent an hour at the store talking to us. He was graduating soon. Going off to harvard. And never looking back. He had been working very hard, saving every penny. And he has a full scholarship. He was actually asking advice on clothing to buy. What's precious, before he went to school he came in and gave us girls a fashion show. We helped him out. Told him what to buy and how to dress, and even hooked him up with a hair stylist. Oh he looks so cute. Like a posh geeky nerd. And do you know what, that's the last time I saw him. And we never saw her again.
In retail of any type and service industry. The churchies are the worst. Cannot stand them.

When I worked fast food, I hated it when some of the church people came in.
One Sunday, a woman, looking holier than thou, walked in. I knew she was going to be a pain.
She looked down her nose at me like it was a sin to work on Sunday.
She talked down to me when ordering. Like I was 7 years old.
Well, excuse me, but if it's wrong to work on Sunday, then why did she come to the restaurant expecting to be served?
The Sabbath isn't on Sunday anyway.
If we were closed on Sunday, then she'd be complaining about that.
Now, if I ever see her again and she still acts like a witch, I'll tell her:
"Sitting in a pew makes you no more a Christian than me sitting in the garage makes me a car". ~~Frank Turek.
I'd rather wait on the bar crowd.
They acted like they were my best friend and were grateful to be served some food.

If I did respond at all it would be after she was at peak rage so I could say I was sorry, but I was told to shut up and since the customer is always right I did what I was told. Charlotte, I'm so happy for you that you're doing something you love and not retail. All of us benefit from your choice! And you'd be surprised how many people steal out of tip jars or flat out steal the whole thing. While doing Karaoke one night four guys came in that weren't regulars at my show or at that bar. They were acting really shady three of them finally left after about fifteen minutes and a few minutes later the last guy started walking super slow towards the door next to my equipment. A few feet away from my table he dashed up to the table, grabbed my tip jar, that wasn't really full because it was only an hour into the show, and ran out the door. I stupidly went after him, like heck no you did not just do that, and his buddies had already pulled the car right in front of the door, so it wasn't the first time they've done this. I got to him before he could close his door and tried getting the tip jar out of his hands, but then someone put their arms around my waist and pulled me backwards, and then the car took off. I looked around and realized over half the bar had run out after me and I got a lecture on how that was a good way to get myself killed. But then as soon as we got back inside, everyone started getting into their wallets and purses and the bar owner brought over a beer pitcher to use as a new tip jar and everyone came over and filled it up! Those @$$hat's probably stole maybe fifteen-twenty bucks, but everyone rallying around me that night gave a total of about ninety dollars all together. I cried when they all filed up and put money in the " jar" and gave me hugs, I couldn't help it. Those are some good human beings!

One time, this guy bought this expensive powerdrill, and he was in such a hurry that he was already leaving while the printer was still working on his receipt. I reminded him about his receipt and I got this dismissive wave in my face and he told me to leave it, so I threw it in the trash.
Two hours later, he comes back. Michael, my supervisor, was working the service desk. Michael is pretty anti-"customer is always right", so he was pretty annoyed that a customer tried to bring something expensive back without a receipt. So they both walk to the register I worked at in the morning, and Michael asked him why he didn't have a receipt, and I literally heard the man claim that I didn't give it to him. I immediately said "excuse me sir, you said you didn't need it", and then Michael dumped the bin on the register and went "well, then you can go look for your receipt, and I'll see you at the service desk when you've found it" and walked off.

I called HR and discussed my issues with the store manager. They treated me like a bridezille because I demanded the dress I paid $1,000 for before my wedding day. They also didn't take me seriously because I was a 20 year old bride. As a former retail worker, I KNOW customers are so frustrating, rude, and 9/10 in the wrong. Theft, literal poop in fitting rooms, drunks, screamers, pee pants, karen's that made me cry, people screaming at the top of their lungs, sexist men, catcalling, men that waited for me in the parking lot... I could keep going. I do not miss working retail in the slightest.

Back in the early 90s we went into an upscale department store in Tokyo; there was a virtual army of staff in the lobby, where we were met with an official greeter who delicately bowed and led us over to a sales assistant and introduced us saying they would be at our service for the duration of our “visit”. The assistant introduced themselves, asked if there was something we were looking for or just wished to browse - when we told him we would like to look around, he invited us to take our time and he would be nearby should we have any questions or require assistance. He then moved a discreet distance away while we wandered through the store, virtually invisible to us, but at our sides instantly when we had questions. We wound up making a lot of purchases that day, and he assisted us in carrying our items to the counter where he checked us out. Each item was individually wrapped in high quality paper before being placed in our bags, which he carried for us as he accompanied us to the exit, wishing us a pleasant day and thanking us for our visit. I cannot remember a single thing we purchased that day, but our visit to that store is one of my favorite memories of our trip.
Of course this was a different era in a different country and would never happen in the US in this Age of Karen.

Turns out I had completely missed the sign on the door that said the bathroom was closed. I apologize profusely and left.
Couple days ago we went to McDonald's for breakfast because we were on the road. there were a bunch of empty tables and we went to go sit at one. We sat down and started eating. People showman and sit at the table right in front of us and give us a dirty look.. we were womdering why. Aswe're getting ready to go, we realized that this was 1 of the tables they had set up to not be sad at for covid distancing. It did have a big round sticker on it that said "please do not sit at this table" or some shit but we'd ignored due to the the inordinate amount of signage for no reason.

    1. customer, buys a hoover in a very busy, understaffed and focused on ''serve as quick as you can'' store
    2. customer comes back within a few weeks to return it
    3. You ask if anything was wrong? The customer says no, it was a present for their daughter, but she got another one in the meantime and didn't want it
    4. The box looks not opened, you don't think of checking it. The hoover goes back for sale
    5. A few days later you find out someone has tried to buy this hoover, discovered the hoover was used, full of hair, dust and crap.
    6. That was the only hoover in the store and they demanded 50% off it (you are allowed only 30% off). After the manager says no and apologises it shouldn't be on the shelf, the customer throws an open can of soup on the manager while filming it...

We had people who had a location closer to them come specifically to our location because they knew they wouldn't have to deal with the annoying salesperson hovering or pushing extra add-ons at the cash register. As a mother and someone who likes fine dining (preplague), we've eaten out with our child from a week after they were born.
If they got fussy or started crying, myself or their dad would take them outside and calm them down, do whatever changing or feeding that was needed.
    1. Because I want to enjoy my meal.
    2. Someone else letting their child bawl and scream really pisses me off to feck and back
    3. Therefore I'm not going to put others through my baby screaming
My child would always eat out with us as we were alone in central london and had no family or friends to babysit.
At toddler age, they were always in a high chair that we owned by Phil and Ted which G clamps to the edge of a table. It's got a 5 point harness as well do the little buggers are going nowhere. But again:
    1. If they got fussy or annoyed they'd be taken outside by their father and a conversation about a lack of ice cream would happen and then they came back and behaved.
    2. I taught them manners as soon as was possible and rudeness to a server was NEVER acceptable and when you give them consequences they learn those manners quickly.
    3. Children watch their parents and treat people how their parents treat people.
    4. Servers are not babysitters.
    5. electronic devices are not babysitters.
    Age 5 and above.
1.Can understand need for manners and what they are.
    2. Should have been taught manners and know how to use them.
    3. They should not be allowed to handle food which others may also be eating, such as a buffet.
    4. I hate when parents fail to do all of the above so I make sure my kid has never done them!
Having a well behaved child, who can be taken to the best restaurants in the whole world, means that they usually get taken down into the kitchens and get to sit at the chef's table being fed taster desserts.
Our favourite place to eat is Claridges. It's a 7* hotel. We first went there with our baby when they were 8 weeks old. Every 30 minutes a teapot of medium warm water would be replaced, without even asking for it, so that we could warm up milk for them. I'm a slow eater so whoever finished first would take our baby and cuddle and everyone taking turns so that we could eat too.
There is NO reason for any other parent to think otherwise.
    AND TREAT YOUR SERVERS WELL.
I've literally had meetings where, the person opposing my client had treated me like crap, when I was working as a server, to pay my way through Law School. They didn't remember me but I sure remembered them. I took such pleasure making sure they lost their case.

Had another friend's kid kick me. I said if he does that again I'm kicking him back. He did and I kicked the little bugger. Obviously not really hard or anything that would bruise, just a short sharp shock to the system. He never did it again either.
But then we had an autistic kid who lived near us and he and his older brother woud come round and play with my child. The little one who was autistic never got invited anywhere. Of course I miss running into nice folks that way too but the ratio of negative vs positive experiences "out there" make me feel entirely okay with being a hermit.

When I first started working in food service, I always asked my boss to pull my drawer out so I could count it at the end of my shift at the time I was scheduled to clock out for the day. After doing this for about a week, I was finally told that I was being unreasonable and in food service, you can’t expect to be let out on time/when you’re scheduled to leave for the day. That’s when I learned that my personal boundaries and needs mean absolutely nothing to the company. I feel significantly less guilty for calling out on days I was too depressed to get out of bed because 1) I was dealing with some personal things and couldn’t afford therapy off of my $8.25/hour wages and 2) they treated me like absolute garbage.

A truck almost ran me off the road this evening. He was tailgating me in the right lane so I moved over into the middle. In front of me was a car going slower because traffic slowed down. He almost hit that car and pulled in front of me, into the next lane and into the carpool lane. If my car hadn’t had sensors I’d not have known he was pushing into my lane again. The speed limit was 70 mph. I was going about 65 because I could see the slowdown ahead and the car in front of me was slowing. Dude was a menace and an asshole. Cars all across the highway having to slam on brakes. It was a miracle nobody crashed into anyone else or him into them. I’ve had WAY too many bad experiences with trucks and getting worse. Was a time when if you were on a road trip, you were safe if you stayed with some truckers on the road. Not so much now.

Retail, especially at Christmas is the worst! I once worked at a small accessories store in a mall and it was Christmas Eve. We closed at 6 and I had plans to have dinner with my in-laws at 6:30. It had been pretty much dead for the last hour, so I had counted out and had the gate pulled down halfway when it was five til 6. I was running the vacuum and these two older ladies came in (I also had turned off half the lights)...they looked around a bit, then literally stood there with a pack of earrings, discussing who they could split them up for. When it was nearly 15 minutes after 6, I said "Look, I have plans with my family in 15 minutes and I'd really like to not miss dinner with them. The mall is closed and I need to leave." I was so done. They apologized and bought the earrings (thanks for making me even later because I had to recount the register because they paid with cash), and then acted surprised when they saw the lights were already turned off in the mall. I felt like yelling "It's effing Christmas Eve! You've had all year to get your shopping done! GET OUT!" Never again.

In Japan, the waiters and also store clerks practially scream their greeting at you. If they work on re-stocking some shelves and you walk by - they will just simply shout "WELCOME!". I've never worked in a store, but I think they do it every few minutes, just to greet any new poeple inside the store. At first I was reeeeally annoyed by it - but I got used after living there and now I am kind of missing it. So yeah, I'd be happy if the people in a store would greet me here in Vienna like they did in Japan, because it shows me they are available for questions or if I need something (they usually are just standing there and waiting to answer questions XD)
The not-needing-to-tip is another thing I really miss and love about Japan. But also, I like how tips are handeled in Austria. Mostly you are expected to tip, but for example as a student it is not expected or you can tip less. Because we know students are always broke haha I mean, the wage still sucks for waiters, even here where the pay is a bit higher, but I hope it doesn't suck as much as it seems to suck in the US/Canada.

"Oh, no! It looks like you dropped something." Passes the wrappers to the customer.
Years ago, when I worked at a sub shop, the creepy owner (he used to watch us from behind pillars) said we had to follow the formula and stop adding extra veggies even if the customer asks. It gets expensive, but we were also supposed to make the sub the way they wanted.
We had to tell them "I will add the extra olives this time, but we have to follow the policy after this." One lady started screaming at me. The whole food court turned to look at her. I just kept working and quietly said when she stopped screaming,"I don't make decisions around her lady. I am a peon. I told you that I added the extra olives this time. I do not make enough money to stand here and be screamed at for something that I was told to say. If you have a problem with the policy, please tell the owner. His number is at the cash." She actually looked at the ground and apologized.
That was the only time I have ever spoken to a customer like that. I didn't yell, my voice was cold and I enunciated every word. I don't get angry often. I am quiet. I am patient. I quietly get angry. I have seen people turn white when I have gotten angry. I apparently stare through them while their blood turns cold or something, so I have been told.
My manager came from prepping food because she was afraid I would walk out and quit. I told her she wasn't losing me that easy and continued slapping veggies on the subs and hoping that some of the people in the huge line would go to McDonald's.

I had a funny experience in a mall today. I was in the waiting area at a Brow Bar (threading place), and the whole store front is glass, so we're all people watching while we wait. There's a janitor mopping up something and he place those "wet floor" signs around the area. This guy (let's say Kevin) is talking to his companion, paying no attention to what's in front of him, and walks right into the janitor's cart. He then starts yelling at the janitor for having his cart "in the way." The janitor points to the signs that Kevin had passed before he ran into the cart (while not looking where he was walking), but Kevin just gets more upset, yelling, " don't you be rude to me because your s***'s in the way!" As Kevin starts to walk away, he notices the ~10 people in the Brow Bar looking at him with disgust, Kevin says, "what the f*** are you looking at?" Half the people around me, as if on cue, all raise their hands and flip Kevin off. It was beautiful watching him storm off!
