    Teacher here. Had a colleague who told me about a Karen parent. When studying the American Revolutionary War, the Karen requested that fighting and violence be left out. Of a lesson, about a war.

    When I was a cocktail waitress in the 70's
    4 people came in. I went to take their order.
    A guy said, " Excuse me we are talking...how rude." I excused myself and I told all my friend waitresses NOT to take their orders.
    I never went back... because they were always talking.
    You know...I didn't want to be rude.
    They left without being served any drinks...

    In 1989, I worked at a certain linen and housewares store in Studio City, CA. I was a cashier and became good friends with Jimmy in the linen department. Jimmy was always very friendly and helpful with customers, but when they were rude we had a system in place.
    Jimmy would escort the customer to my register (usually with a packed shopping cart or two), introduce me and then he would whisper in my ear or just mouth the words "wreck 'em".
    I proceeded to type the prices into the register (no scanning back in the day). Then, when there were only 2 or 3 items left, I would make a "mistake" and have to call the manager for an "over ring". Once the manager cleared the register, I had to take everything out of the bags and start all over.
    It was sooooo satisfying! Especially when they let us know they had plans or an appointment and would be late!
    OH! I just remembered! After Jimmy brought them to the register he would tell them, "I hope your day is as nice as you are!" The cherry on the ugly sundae!!!!!!

    Sometimes that “rearranging the food and bringing it back” thing is actually a big problem. My mom had celiac disease. We were at a restaurant that claimed to have a gluten free menu. She found a salad that the menu claimed would be gluten-free if ordered without croutons, so she told our waiter that she had Celiac Disease and needed the salad to be made fresh, without croutons. It came out with croutons anyway, so she sent it back and nicely told the waiter that it needed to be freshly made without croutons. The waiter returned a few minutes later with what was obviously the same salad, with croutons removed (except the one peeking out from under one lettuce leaf, and the crumbs still visible. When Mom pointed this out and asked again (still nicely) for a new salad prepared as ordered, the waiter rolled his eyes at her. That’s when I went full-on Karen and asked for a manager. I didn’t do it to get the guy in trouble and didn’t mention how rude he was. Just explained to the manager that when something is supposedly gluten free, it cannot contain anything with gluten-even crumbs. I explained that people with CD can get very sick if they eat even a little gluten, so if the restaurant claims a menu item is gluten free, they really need to follow through. He offered to comp our meals-I asked him not to, that I only called for him because I wanted to make sure that the restaurant actually understood what “gluten-free” means. Sometimes you really HAVE to be a Karen, and advocate for yourself (or in my case, for my Mom and other customers who needed GF meals).

      This is something I can agree with. If you are polite and mention what you're issue is, and they still aren't fixing it or they "fix it" in a way that can still be unpleasant or even harm you, you have a right to complain. That's not being a Karen though, that's just trying to get what you ordered in the first place. The waiter who rolled his eyes should be fired for that, because he could have made your mom seriously ill just because he might have thought, "Oh, their just faking it," or whatever justification he had.

      @@SlimKeith11 It's called Celiac Disease. You can read all about it. But regardless of that, asking for a salad with no bread, or croutons was a reasonable request.

      I was at another table and saw the waitress and chef, both reassure this women that they have a cleaning system and prep system to limit contamination and explained it to her and came back a couple times to advise on menu and what had. The excitement on the woman's face knowing how much they cared and respected her needs. Ah priceless ❤ (she didn't ask for the attention I guess they just know how anxiety inducing it can be to eat out with an illness)

    Sometimes being the person BEHIND rude people is the best place to be. A few years back my son and I were flying across country to visit family. There was some kind of national computer glitch that had the airline all messed up and people's flights were getting cancelled and rescheduled like crazy. We flew into our last connecting flight in Seattle. While trying to figure out how to get to our destination I see that the service desk is swamped with angry people yelling at the attendant. She was close to tears. We went into a little gift shop and I bought a cheesy little teddy bear and told my son (4 years old at the time) to give it to the lady when we got up to her. I waited until most of the angry crowd had gone and with a sweet smile I approached and said "Looks like your day is shot, I'll be nice" and my son handed her the bear. This lady bent over backwards to help us. We got an escort onto the tarmac and put on a flight that I guess was just for employees or something, there was hardly anyone on the flight, straight to our destination. Sweetness and a $6 dollar bear can go a long way.

      One lady who was boarding a late connecting flight from Charlotte to Dallas had 3 little ones with her, alone... all of whom were crying loudly just being tired and grumpy. I heard one lady make a huge deal over the kids noise and crying as the mom made her way back to the three seats in center row... right beside me.
      Opting to not be a horrible person like I had just witnessed I turned to mom and said, "I can entertain these two with stories, origami paper butterflies and turtles if you want to feed the baby. She looked at me and said, "Oh Please! I have been to hell and back!"
      I told the kids my favorite stories from childhood (with voices) until they fell asleep and curled up into the seats on either of side me. With two heads resting on my lap about 1 hour later the same Karen walked towards the lavatory and made a rude comment purposely within earshot, "babysitter was not with her earlier as apparently she is a better influence than mom will ever be."
      I quipped, "Actually sweetie, I just met her about an hour ago. I watched you and decided, *Instead of bitchin... to see if I could pitch in."*
      The look on her face, "Priceless!"
      This was in 2004 so the term Karen was not around back then. Doesn't change what she was though. She went to the lavatory and quietly made her way back to her seat.
      The mom had just left her cheating husband and was heading back to her parents with nothing but the clothes on her back and her three little ones. I never saw Caitlyn, Marcus or lil Benjamin again with their momma Melissa, but I think of them every now and then and wonder if they remember the crazy redheaded lady who told them "The Three Billy Goats Gruff." lol
      The eldest must be in college by now or out. Dear gods... I am that old.

    Reminds me of a story I read when I was little.
    The boy king of France had a tutor, and they used to take walks in the garden. The tutor was always very kind and polite to the gardeners. One day the king asked him why, because one didn't need to consider the gardeners as people. They were mere gardeners. The tutor responded, "I would be ashamed if people saw a mere gardener had better manners than I".

    I had bought a bunch of Girl Scout cookies to help out a co-workers daughter. I stopped at a fast food joint one night before driving home. After making small talk, the poor kid said he was tired and hungry. I asked if he wanted some cookies. He said, “hell yeah”!! I gave him a box, and my 10 piece nugget turned into so many I lost count and couldn’t finish!! Always be friendly! You get more bees with honey!

    After watching so many videos on being petty l finally turned petty. My supervisor at work has this thing of overloading me with other people's work or moving me from my assigned tasks to something else and if l try to explain l have 6 things to do today she gets angry .So last week l did the extra stuff slowly and thoroughly & left my assignments undone & her supervisor called her & she got shouted at for moving me around in the first place when she had other staff members less busy. l am here for the petty

    I work in an insurance call centre and once an extremely rude customer, not liking what I was telling him about his motor insurance claim, demanded that I put him on to a manager and called me condescending names like "sweetie" and "dear". He said women know nothing about cars, so he wanted the manager right away (he assumed my manager was male - which was wrong). I told him a couple of times that he was best off talking with me as my manager would not likely be as flexible as I already was. He got ruder, so I eventually put him through to my female manager. She was known in the company to be very difficult to deal with, intimidating and downright rude. I sniggered as I put him through and explained his complaint. I then sat back and happily listened to her absolutely tear him to shreds for about 10 minutes before she transferred him back to me. He was suddenly SO polite and grateful for my help. Lol.

      As soon as they don't like anything they get condescending, misoginistc or racist right?
      I'm from Mexico and used to take calls from customers from the Us. As soon as I would say they're request for a refund was not justified they would start with their racist comments. I hated that job.

    I LOVE LOVE LOVE the one about the customer with the monster child who made a giant mess in the Christmas aisle. The cashier making that entitled, inconsiderate, snobby Mom wait until she cleaned up the entire mess is my new spirit animal. The shit retail workers have to endure is disgusting. I'm glad this girl thought of this plan. It must have felt SO GOOD to put a Karen in her damn place. The part about the woman having to wait another 20+ minutes with a bored and spoiled little brat just made my day. How dare people treat retail people so terribly! 😤

      I have 2 small children and I would NEVER! WE would stay and clean things up together! I have no words! But I'm also the person that picks my kids' food up off the floor before I leave a restaurant 🤭

      I just don't get it, why she can't pick it up herself and tell the child that it's not ok to throw stuff on the ground.
      I hate that kind of people so much... specially the people littering and think it's ok only because there are people who are cleaning.

    I have a lot of empathy for as retail workers. One time I watched a worker completely reassemble a pile of t-shirts you know by colour size at a really busy Costco - as she patted the last of it a woman walked up literally and destroyed it… as I watched the colour fall from the workers face… I walked up to the customer (gently) I put my hands on the clothes preventing more carnage and said what are you looking for… her response was “oh I don’t no nothing I guess… “ then I responded “how about you reassemble this pile you just destroyed? Because now none of us can find anything!” (I apologized to the worker in front of her). When three other customers corralled her she left… people are oblivious it’s crazy. I rehang clothing on hangers I try on in dressing rooms before I handing them back. And if it’s super busy, i even take back to the rack(pre-Covid).

    I love your "petty" and took a lesson from you. The Safeway I go to has parking spaces marked for senior parking. The other day, I was cut off at the last senior parking space by a car driven by a woman who could not have been much past 35. We arrived at the same store door at the same time, and I said to her, "I see you parked in a senior parking space." She just said, "So what?" I said, "I just can't get over how young you look for a senior. Wny, you don't look a day older than fifty." I'm not sure there's an actual name for the colour of red she turned. So, thank you, sensei. You teach us well.

    I remember i was like 8 and walking into a Kohls changing room once, with just piles of clothes everywhere. This poor attendant lady told me to use a different one while she cleaned it. My mom made sure I put everything back on hangers before placing them on the return rack. The attendant lady said thank you when we left, she was still cleaning up the room. That was almost 20 years ago and I have never left clothes in a changing room, unless told to do so by staff.

      I think offering them a senior discount would be a nice slow burn. Our local Goodwill had to stop asking if customers qualified for the the senior discount because of irate customers who were INSULTED that the cashier thought they looked old. A few even contacted upper management to complain. So now if you are a senior you have to ASK for the discount to get it,

    There was one time I was super petty and it backfired and the male Karen actually liked it LOL. I was working at Olive Garden and a table came in my section that my fellow servers IMMEDIATELY started complaining about how they never tip and make really dumb demands. I decided that I was going to comply... but way over the top. Apparently there was never enough kale in the dad's Zuppa Toscana (italian wedding soup) and thats been the cause of most severs stress with this table. So when he ordered I put an ungodly amount of fresh cold kale in the bowl and maybe put a quarter of the amount of soup that I was supposed to. I mean if he needed to water down the kale with more soup its easy to do. IVE NEVER SEEN A MORE APPRECIATIVE MAN IN MY LIFE. He was so happy he was glowing, and ate like 4-5 bowls of soup exactly like that LOL. He tipped nearly 30% on the bill and it was a family of 4 so it was pretty nice and he always requested me when I was there.

    I used to work at a coffee shop. One time in the evening, when there was no one else in line, a guy came in and ordered a coffee and bagel. His total was about $5. He reaches into his pocket and THROWS a handful of change on the counter (dimes, nickles, pennies, and few quarters.) with a grin on his face. He says "Count it, it's your job." Okay. So I start counting pennies, one two three..., stacking them, moving on to nickles. Oops, I lost count, gotta re-count the piles. Can't get this wrong, it's not my money. Plus, it is my job after all. He stood there annoyed but didn't say anything. He had told me to count it, so I was. I had not made his coffee yet either as we need payment first before they get product. My supervisor came by and saw what I was doing and just kept going. He knows I wouldn't do that if the guy didn't deserve it. So, after 5 minutes of counting his change and cashing him out, I then made his order. I hope he learned his lesson. My supervisor, coworkers, and I had a good laugh that night.

      When I visit USA I see this behavior. This never fly in my country. I usually help the cashier count the money so the process will be quicker & better for everyone. Especially usually there are people queuing.
      The only time I don’t count was in Japan. They had sick machine to do that

    Only yesterday I had a very happy encounter at a restaurant. I've been both coping with the aftermath of two ankle surgeries and I have some pretty severe food allergies, bell peppers among them. Both things I told the restaurant when I made the reservations. This was, by the way, my first day out to dinner since the last surgery. They were incredibly kind about all of it. Doors were opened when I shuffled in with my crutches, they made sure I got to our table ok and they took my meal away to have it replaced, because the mixed vegetables had a few pieces of bell peppers on it. The veggies I got instead were really good. And my friend and I got free drinks as well because we had to wait for my food to come out again.
    It was a very pleasant dinner and we left them a nice tip because of it. Service at its finest.
    Just thought I should add a positive story here.

    Having been a waitress in the past, I am always super nice and friendly with the wait staff. And I'm a good tipper. This was a lifesaver once. We were at a restaurant we ate at fairly often. My son ordered wings with no celery due to a celery allergy (weird I know). The food came out with celery. The waitress noticed first and took it back to the kitchen. She later told us the cook tried to just take the celery off the plate and send it back out. Thankfully both she and the manager saw this and fixed the issue. Evidently he was fairly new and didn't understand the severity of some food allergies. Like if it was a mild allergy we would have just taken it off the plate ourselves.

      I'm really glad you had that server and manager to stop this. I'm assuming that they explained the consequences of his actions and he never did it again. It's the servers responsibility to make sure the entire order is correct and if it's not have it corrected and while it's being corrected you then go tell the customers that it's going to be a few moments more and why. I've waited a lot of tables in my time and made some mistakes in the beginning but I learned from every single mistake and made sure it didn't happen again. Working any where that you have to deal with different ppl and personalities everyday is extremely stressful, please make sure you are always kind to the employees bc they're working for low wages, usually no benefits, have to share their tips with busboys, dishwashers, bartenders and sometimes meal prep workers if you work in a sit-down restaurant. If your working in retail or other customer base jobs always be kind bc they are doing it as fast as they can and believe me when I says they don't want you there any longer than you want to be there. Being kind doesn't cost anything at all.
      Just bc you have money and others don't doesn't mean you can treat them anyway you want. Having money doesn't make you better at anything or a better person. Nobody is better than anyone else no matter what differences they may have. Differences make us unique and should not be used to bully ppl or to get what you want or anything else for that matter. If you removed all the differences from everyone in the world, what would you have left. Think about that for awhile.

    "Let the nice lady clean it up." is right up there along with customers thinking 'oh, they get paid to do this, let's give them something to do." Just because part of our job is to clean up, doesn't mean you can make a mess because we don't ''look busy, they need something to do." Clothes and toys are the worst. At least pick them up off the floor and try to make it halfway neat. And stop leaving cold food that you suddenly decide you don't want stuffed behind some pillows. I would rather you hand it to the cashier saying you don't want it, than to find it weeks later molding away and ruining a bunch of stuff in any other department. We have to toss that stuff out anyway (cold chain) and would rather toss out one partially melted tub of ice cream than an entire stack of shirts that you left it on top of.

      Ugh, the kids I teach are like that. I tell them to clean up after themselves, and they SO OFTEN tell me it's the janitor's job to do that. I then ask them where they work so I can come by and dump a whole soda on the floor just after they finish mopping. It's their job, after all.

      @@CarinaCoffee I'm that person who sees a broken bottle of something all over the floor and wanders around looking for an employee to tell.
      And I've seen folks do just what you described. They roll their carts right through it and make a bigger mess.
      i also close freezer doors when I see them left open.
      I had a Karen moment a couple weeks ago when right in front of me, a woman left a freezer door open & started walking away. I walked up & probably slid that door closed a little hard--she turned around & I just looked right back at her, but she didn't say anything.
      It's not just disrespect to the store & employees, it's disrespect to other customers who can slip and fall on their mess or wind up with mushy/melted food.
      Something wrong with a lot of folks these days.

      Whenever i go out to eat with my kids the waitress/waiters are always so amazed that I clean up the food that falls on the ground and leave the booth the way I found it as much as possible, as much to say I’ve had a few tell me that no one since they worked there had cleaned up after they messy kids. What are you teaching your kids?!

    I just wanted to share a moment that happend today to me at work. I worked to day at a game and this kid won this big chocolate (has smaller chocolate inside) and I handed it over and they opens it. The kid comes up to me and gives me a candy from the win! It made my day ❤

    About the spicy wings story:
    There was a wonderful chef in my town, born in Hong Kong. He served various cuisines in his restaurant, including my favorite curry ever; it was sort of a fusion of Indian and Chinese flavors. One day a group came in together, and one guy apparently wanted to impress everyone. There were 5 levels of “hot” with all the spicy dishes, and Chef Kwan’s “mild” was plenty spicy for most customers. This guy insisted on level 5. Kwan came hurrying from the kitchen and tried to talk the customer down to maybe a 3. Nope. Kwan suggested a small sample first. Nope.
    So, in due time, out came the hottest curry ever. Yeh, the guy was red faced and sweating, but still did his best to eat, for a few bites anyway.
    The waiter brought an extra bowl of plain rice to help, and that was what the customer ate for dinner.

    Once I was in a Thai restaurant and the cashier asked how spicy I said bring it on! She turned around, gave the kitchen guys a thumbs up and they bust out laughing. Not gonna lie I was scared haha it was delicious even though it burned off part of my face it was so spicy 🥵
    One bar trick we used to use at my bar, if they complained the drink wasn’t strong enough, pour a few drops of the liquor directly down the straw. Worked every time.

    I worked at a coffee shop and overheating the drinks was a common "revenge" for rude customers. But you wanna know the catch? Tell them "Careful, it's really hot" as you're giving them the drink. They'll try it anyway and still burn themselves because they have already proved themselves dumb, rude idiots when you took their order.

    Had one difficult IT customer Karen (office manager) get too snippy and accusatory with me, so I emailed her that, because she was dissatisfied with my work, my firm would send someone else from them on.
    - I am well known for fixing IT problems in 1/3 the time on any other tech, and resolving issues when no one else in our firm can. (People actually cheered "John's back! John's back!" for me at another client.)
    - After 11 months of other technicians supporting her firm, she was so nice to me when I eventually came back for a service call.

    I always try to be pleasant with anyone working in customer service, hospitality, or the food service industries because I worked in two out of those three industries. I know how rude and/or stupid people can be when they view others as "less than human." It pays off, too. One time, I was with some friends at Denny's and I ordered a banana split for dessert. Unfortunately, the restaurant was out of bananas. Our waiter went through the trouble of making me a sundae with fresh berries instead and I swear, it was better than any banana split I had ever had. We all tipped extra because of his effort.

    I worked as a pharmacy technician. The number of times I had people get cranky when we told them it would be 15 to 20 minutes to fill their prescription is through the roof. "All you have to do is slap a label on it!" How exactly do they think the information gets ON the label in the first place? We manually have to scan the script, and then choose the correct customer (heaven forbid we bill it to their father's name or someone not related but with the same name), choose the correct doctor and the correct office (Some MDs have 20+ locations in their profile, and we needed the right one if we were to send for refills when the original script ran out). Next, we have to make sure we pick the right drug. It wouldn't do to give someone instant release when their doctor wrote for extended release. We had to enter the quantity , number of refills, and calculate the correct days supply. This is all assuming we can actually read the doctor's writing if hand-written. It is also assuming the doctor wrote the script correctly. At least once a shift I had a script come through that was missing information (number of refills, quantity, or the days supply the MD wrote didn't match up with the quantity dispensed) or screwed up for some other reason like it being dated for the next day. I loved when they wrote for medications or strengths that didn't exist or it was a drug that was backordered from the manufacturer. Next, we get to the insurance. What's this? The last 3 insurances in the profile are expired? Let's search for a new one. Nope, nothing, but it's only found around 50% of the time. We need your card because you didn't tell us of the change. No insurance? Gosh, you should have mentioned that at the beginning. Let's toss a discount card in for you, because we're nice like that. After all that the pharmacist has to check it to make sure the data is entered correctly before it will fall back into the technician's queues. Then we can count it and "slap a label on it." However, the pharmacist still has to do a final check to make sure the drug we dispensed is correct. No need to kill someone with the wrong med, right? And if you were super rude, sighed, paced in front of the pharmacy, stared us down while we did our work, and complained to customers in line about how incompetent or slow we were then one pharmacist I worked with would make you wait another 10 to 15 minutes for the med just for an irritation tax (or ***hole tax as someone called it). I also learned to count reeeeeaaaaallllyyyy slow for these folks. 180 tablets? Oh, yeah. They were going to be there for a while. I'd even double count the ones I didn't need to. Let's not even get into situations where we had to call a patient's insurance company and hang on hold for 30 minutes to 90 minutes before we could speak to a representative. Slap a label on it my ***! Oh, and just as an FYI for people who think that electronically sent scripts auto populate in our system, they don't. We still have to do all of the above steps. It's just a faster way to get the information to a pharmacy and more legible than an MD's handwriting...still lots of errors in the data sent, though. Vent over. I've taken up too much space. Sorry!

      Thanks for explaining all that. Plus there's the constant phone ringing, doctor's offices calling with refills, people using your check out ( the pharmacy) line instead of the store's because the line is shorter, people picking up prescriptions and dropping off prescriptions AND now giving out COVID-19 vaccinations. As if you guys didn't have enough to do. I don't know how you do it. Our CVS pharmacists are unbelievably fast and kind despite being chronically short staffed. BTW my stepson is a hospital based doctor of pharmacy AND oncology pharmacist. God bless you all. ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

      Wow, thanks for explaining that. I had no idea that's why it can take so long sometimes. The one time I did get upset (tone of voice wasnt very nice) I'd had a bad day, when my stuff was ready I apologized to the poor lady it wasn't her fault I'd been having one of those days. Unfortunately I think I helped her day by apologizing which later made me wonder just how bad her day had been. I try my very best not to get mad if their behavior doesn't warrent it, I have worked fast food and retail so I do my best to not that customer.

    If people only knew what being just a halfway decent, nice customer could get them.
    Once was taking some of my coworkers to a local mom and pop ice cream stand I'd been going to for a few years. DH (then boyfriend) and I would go on minidates there,
    and just be basically pleasant, patiently wait our turn, and tip. If no one was around, we'd ask about their day and gradually got to know them.
    So when it's my turn at the window,
    I'm like "How is your daughter doing with the physical therapy? I'm so glad she's getting her range of motion back! please tell her I'm thinking of her"
    I think the owner didn't realize the coworkers were with me. When I walk over to the picnic table, they all stare at my cone. "Wow" says one of them, "what size is that?"
    Me: "...a small?..."
    "How did you get so many sprinkles?? Do you pay more for that!?"
    It never even occured to me how much they had been suping up my "small cone with sprinkles" for years 💜

    I worked as a manager in a restaurant years ago. People would eat half their meal then suddenly tell the staff it was awful. As I talked with the customers they demanded their meals be discounted or completely removed from their bills. The real kicker would be when they would say, "Can you box up the rest for my dog." To which I would reply (with a fake sincere look) "Absolutely not, I would never give anything to a dog that wasn't fit for a human." Then smile and walk away. I knew dang well they wanted free food and their leftovers...bahahaha!!! Now, how do they argue with me about my statement...they don't. PETTY at its finest 🤣🤣

    I’ve worked customer service off and on for years. Mostly over the phone but some in person. I find that over the phone people are much more rude. Over the years I have learned how to get what I want when calling a company. May sound silly but this works. For example: you want to call your bank for a refund on a late fee on your credit card. Put a smile on your face before the person answers. You can “hear” a smile. Next when the person answers the tell you their name. USE their name immediately. “Hi Charlotte! Thanks for taking my call, I’m sure glad you’ll be able to help me today” Sounds cheezy BUT using their name creates familiarity. And saying “glad you’ll be able to help me” puts in their mind they ARE going to help if humanly possible. Always say ma’am or sir and thank you. Yes I guess it’s a form of manipulation but I’ve had people break company rules and give me what I ask for. When I did customer service and you yelled at me from the start you aren’t getting anything from me.

    My Service Dog had an accident in Walmart once. Lord, how embarrassing! As we were waiting for clean- up (they kept telling me not to touch it) I got out a bag and wet wipes and cleaned it. The workers turned around and said they, we don't see anything. I told them that's how you know a true Service Dog handler. They'll clean the mess.

      Me too! I had just changed food, and he couldn’t hold it. I was mortified! I had it cleaned and disinfected in fifteen seconds, lol. Always keep emergency items in the pack. Real handlers would never walk away from a mess, it’s obvious when it’s a pet that just poos on the floor.

    After spending half of my working life in kitchens, I know what goes on. I had asked for ranch dressing on my salad, and the waiter brings me one with Italian. I ask for a fresh salad with my ranch and when he brought it back all smiling, I told him to wait. I tipped the plate to the side and held the salad in place with my fork. Sure enough, the Italian dressing comes dripping through. His smile disappeared, but I told him it wasn't that big of a deal, but to cancel the rest of my order.

    As someone who works in a chronically understaffed fast food location, I would like to just say, be nice to the people taking your order, because sometimes they're also the one MAKING your order. I've lost track of the number of times I've soaked someone's breakfast in sauce after they complain that 'no one in the fucking place makes anything properly, I SAID EXTRA SAUCE'.

      Only slightly related (because I don't think we were being assholes, just teens) but Somic did that to me one time and it was hilarious. My friends and I were driving to Sonic talking about what we wanted when I mentioned that I wanted a hot dog but with "an absolute f**k ton of mustard" (because I was a teen and cussing is edgy). So when my friends got to the window, that's how they ordered it and my lord, that's how it came. You couldn't even see the hot dog for all the mustard 😅

I now have this vid in my mind of this person constantly checking the mirror for the slightest imperfections then going to Ulta and buying all of the latest products that claim to reduce the signs of aging spending way more than the 10% savings. Anyway I can always hope they do this.

    Retired (more served my time 😆)from a well known "home improvement" business. So many stories I could tell. I was not even 5 ft away from this Karen, who knew I was there, break 2 very nice glass globes. She immediately turned to me and said "I didn't do that. They were already like that before she got there and if you think you're going to charge me....you got another think coming MISSY! ( not my name) I just smiled at her and walked away to get the things to clean it up. She went through the whole store loudly complaining that had accused her of breaking something she did not break and just watch and see if pay! One of our long time great customers told her to shut the f*$# up and everyone knew she was a lying bitch! 🤣 After she left I thanked my friend for saying what I could not say and he said "Anytime". She's also the one that snaps her fingers and yells Hey you even though we have nametags and she knows us. One of my co-
    workers told her hey you didn't work there and kept on walking. She stood there with her mouth moving, no words coming out

    My husband is an attorney, and I manage his front office including answering the phones. Pretty frequently clients or other attorneys are really rude to me while being nice to my husband because obviously I’m just a lowly assistant not worthy of their courtesy. I always enjoy the look on their faces when they come in to the office and my husband makes a special point of introducing me as his wife. They are usually very nice to after that!

    I used to work in a clothing store. Not a department store, but a smaller mall store. A lot of our customers were entitled, but this particular one... She walked into the store 15ish minutes before we closed and proceeded to shop at her own sweet pace. We closed and locked the doors at closing, and she was still shopping! Her husband and kid came to the door and knocked so I let them in. The kid said, "Mom, everywhere is closing!" The mom said, "It's okay, Honey. Mommy's special." I rarely want to yank a customer by her hair out the door, but this was one of those rare times....

      We had a "system" for that. We would tell people that our computers programs automatically shut down (ran a closing program) at 9:10 (we closed at 9 pm). If they didn't bring their items up now, they would have to come back tomorrow. Worked a charm.

    I'm a server at a sushi restraunt and almost everyone loves the homemade Yumyum sauce so we bring a bottle to every table with your meal. These bottles are CHEAP. If you squeeze them even slightly too hard the tops will shoot straight off and you'll pour a bottle full of sauce on your food, especially if the tops aren't tightened on well. I generally double check the lids and warn every table about the bottles so people don't accidentally ruin their food and make a mess... unless you're rude to me. Then you're on your own. Yes, I usually end up replacing what they ruined (unless they're SUPER rude, then they've gotta pay for it and charging people for replacements is the only thing management will always back me up on) and I have to clean the mess, but god it's satisfying to watch people embarrass themselves after being so rude lol. And I won't lie, there's been a couple of times where someone has been so overwhelmingly rude to me that I've loosened the lid to the point that it's barely hanging on there lol. Don't eff with your server.

    When I was younger, I went to the movies with my mom and we noticed it was cheaper than usual. Then she noticed she was mistaken for senior citizen (She's not a Karen, but she was in her early 50s and didn't look particularly young that day). She marched back and demanded full price. After that, she did everything in her power to look younger. Diets, face lifts, etc. She succeeded after a lot of money and effort. Trust me, that 10% discount will sting and make them spend way more money in the long run.

All of us will experience forms of trauma throughout out life, it’s only when we stop defining ourselves by that we will have a chance to mature. Those who never learn that lesson become the cautionary tales for everyone else. It’s a tough break, but also a lesson repeated everywhere, not just in retail.

    I worked in retail for 11 years in various jobs at the same store. I’ve just determined some people are being dicks because they’re just dicks. Others are having a bad day and just want to bring us down to their level. Either way I always spoke to them in the best manner I could muster. The shittier they were the nicer I was. That would piss them off something fierce. Always made me smile.

    Six years ago I was working Apple Care support tech and had the fun of sitting next to a "Tier Two" who told the customer in the most polite manner that what they wanted could not be done. The person wanted their phone replaced but did not have the phone to send in. They'd tossed it out of the car and then not retrieved it. And then explained patiently that he was the supervisor. Of course, my first troubleshooting call was helping a very upset and polite teen retrieve her prom pictures ... We succeeded without handing it off to the next tier.

    I had a phone screen repaired after falling at work, and the tech stole my SIM card. I was injured and had to drive with a boot to get a replacement at the store. I was miserable, bawling my eyes out, and panicking. The story employee gave me the number to the repair company, and was super sweet. I called the repair and he got fired for theft. Another customer in the store was being a jerk to the clerk, and was ignored. You can be upset and still be kind.

    The first part where they’re talking about the employee that makes good pretty sundaes for good customers and messy ones for bad is ME and true. My favorite is when there’s one overly rude person at the table and they get dessert along with someone else who gets the same thing and they both come to the table obviously different. I can’t lose my job over perfection I get paid $6 so this is how I hit them where it hurts. 😂🤣😭

    During a fuel crisis in the UK , everyone was struggling to get petrol for a couple of weeks I flew in and had booked a Hire Car , the Car hire company had sent a communication stating that they would where possible provide a full tank of fuel, but as they too were struggling for fuel this may not be possible but at least half a tank would be provided. I arrived at the desk and there was another customer in front of me the guy on the desk acknowledge me and said he would be with me shortly I responded it was no problem. The guy in front was loudly demanding a full tank of fuel .the guy serving tried to explain but the customer was just being pretty obnoxious, eventually he went off with a car that was half full as the customer service person said that was the best he had. When it was my turn to be served he apologised for the delay again I said no problem and I wasn't sure how he kept his patience. I had to smile as he informed me my car had a full tank of Fuel !

    I worked at my college's police department. When someone got their car towed they had to come to me to get this resolved. Little did they know I was also the person that called the tow lot to let them know someone was coming to get their car. If u were mean to me, I would sometimes "forget" to call. Would finally "remember" about 20 minutes later, longer depending how mean u were. Sometimes the person would walk back to the police station (about a block) wondering what was taking so long. Well, you guessed it, if they were still mean the entire process started all over again. I did this with full approval of the tow lot folks. Be nice. Just be nice. Not that difficult.

    When I worked in catering at one hotel we had a vile multimillionaire estate agent that would come in 10 minutes after we closed. For the Brits it was the one sent to prison for the 16 year old, the one who used to be in his commercials. Horrendous stuff used to happen to his food. I never did it, but don’t upset the chef who is cooking your food.
    One of the biggest tricks is to get the plates as hot as you can before they crack. Then you say to the customer "Please be careful, the plates are red hot." Almost invariably people used to touch them because the heat they could feel radiating up to their face is never enough.

    My Dad worked in the kitchen of a big hotel back in the 60's. Some of the horror stories he told me from back then made me appreciate the waiters more and to really thankful. My way of voicing my disapproval was in the tip.

      Sometimes the waiters can be rude. I was once in a restaurant at British airport with my classmates (we were at Heathrow airport waiting for flight to canada to take off, coming from Finland) and we went to one of the restaurants to eat breakfast. When we were paying our food the waiter used some other word for tip when he was putting our bills to the machine to pay with card. The first person from us paying did not tip, because we did not understand that he was asking If we wanted to tip (like i Said he used some other word for tip). So after he had paid without tipping, the waiter looked at him very meanly/rudely ( i dont know how to describe it) and when my classmate noticed his look he was asking us what did he do wrong. After that one of us was like maybe he meant tipping. And after that all of us tipped, but still the waiter looked at that one person from us meanly/rudely only because he did not tip.
      I mean im from Finland and here we dont tip. And from our english it was clear that we were not native english speakers and we were li
      ke ages 16-18. So when you are a waiter at AIRPORT, i think you should have a bit more understanding If the customers dont tip, because maybe they dont know that they have to.

      The problem with the idea of bad service = no tip is that there is a class of entitled customers that NEVER tip, no matter how great or average the service is. How is the server to know if you’re a no-tip jerk? I have a cousin like that, and I dated one for a short time. To quote the date, “If their wages aren’t good enough, they need to look for another job.”
      I always tip good service with 20%, indifferent service with 10-15%, and poor service with 5% or less. That 5% shows that I don’t appreciate poor service.

    I would be so embarrassed if my kid made a huge mess in a store! There’s no way I’d leave it for someone else to clean up, and if it was something I couldn’t clean up, like broken glass, I would hand the employee some cash as payment for the extra work and apologize profusely

      There's more to that saying that they are leaving out, which changes the original meaning of the phrase.
      It came from an executive of a posh luxury store many years ago (I don't remember which one), and the phrase was, "The customer is always right in matters of taste."
      They meant that if the customer wants to wear a chartreuse moo-moo covered in jingle bells, or if they want hot fudge sauce poured on their lobster, then it's their right and the staff should accommodate their "tastes" no matter how awful!

      Oooh, I don't care what they say I don't care what you've heard"
      Nowadays people often misquote it, especially when talking about the police when they make excuses for bad behavior of a few cops. The cops who know about the "bad apples" and do nothing are guilty too.

    Yeah, I had an interesting experience with a costumer service worker. It was Prom and we pulled up to a Dutch Bros drive through at like 9 at night. No one was there expect for one car ahead of us. There was so many of us that we took two cars. So we were sitting in the drive through as the girl taking orders was talking to the car in front of us. Clearly it was one of her friends because she proceeded to talk to them for 15 minutes knowing that we were all waiting in line for her. We might have been slightly petty and decided to have a music war between the two cars. Both of the cars we had taken sat there and blasted music as we screamed the songs at each other while she tried to talk to her friend. Her manager heard us through the windows called her inside and scolded her (all which we could see through the windows) and then she finally came and took our order. I get that you want to visit your friend, but if your gonna not do your job because of it be prepared to have some back lash lol

    The story of the sundae reminds me when i worked in a thai restaurant. We served pokthai so when a rude client ordered a teriyaki salmon pokthai i always put the salmon that was just looking bad and i was only throwing the vegetables in the bowl instead of putting it perfectly and the nice customers i always did out extra salmon and making literally a piece of art😂

    I used to work in a bingo place. Karens + gambling + losing money + alcohol made for some pretty awful situations. This was way before the Karen term was around and back when my social anxiety was so high I didn't have the confidence to do anything. So glad I don't work there anymore.

    Growing up in the Bronx, it was very common to witness people being EXTREMELY rude to people at Chinese take out places (making fun of/mimicking their accents). Being that I worked at a fast food restaurant from 14-18 years old, I knew how Stupid this was to do! I would never do something like that because I have morals and home training! However take it from me, Never Ever f-with people who prepare your food! I've witnessed horrible things! From the best restaurants to food trucks, I'm always courteous, patient, and tip well! If you're not happy with your food, don't send it back and don't eat there again! It's not right that it has to be that way, but it's better than winding up in the ER! 🤒🤕🤢🤧😷💀💀💀💀💀

    I work in a restaurant. One time the manager brought a steak back that the customer said wasn't well done enough. It was cooked all the way through. Instead of asking me to throw it back on the grill, she said "Just let it sit in the window for a minute and I'll take it back out." Which is exactly what she did. The customer responded that it was much better. But we literally did nothing to it! 😆

    I work in a bakery and I have this customer that comes in all the time with ridiculous requests. Once she wanted pumpkin muffins with extra powdered sugar on them, so when putting her box together I took the tray and put the extra sugar on it. The box was filled to the brim with the sugar. You couldn't even see the muffins after I was done with it lol.

      Unless pumpkin muffins are not on the menu and you had to make them from scratch, extra icing sugar on them is not at all a ridiculous request. This is speaking as a chef who has happily fulfilled requests much more elaborate but still reasonable (like making up a vegetarian dish on the spot). Maybe her other requests were more unreasonable, but extra icing sugar is not.

But she comes in all the time wanting us to wait to package things until she gets there due to some weird superstition she once told me about. She also wants to watch us package them. Also the other day she came in wanting a 24 pack of cookies but she wanted me to put them in bags, separately. Also I work in a grocery bakery, where we have a million other things we have to get done.

    When I worked in retail we had a code. "Have a super day!" meant 'eat me' and "Have the day you deserve" was reserved for what we now call Karens. I was the Assistant Manager as the Manager was a floater for multiple stores. We would happy dance when the Karens turned to leave the store. It was GLORIOUS.

    I had dinner with a PhD dietitian and she sent her food back three times. I was so embarrassed. I never had a meal with her again and I never ate at that restaurant again. I don’t understand that practice of even sending it back the first time. But three times is insane. I always over tip waiters and waitresses. I worked as a bus girl when I was 15 and I appreciate what they go through to serve us food.

    I used to work customer service at a tech company. People who called in and were nice usually got better treatment than the rude ones. We do have special deals that we gave to customers who were unsatisfied, or we messed up in some way. Nice people always got extra stuff when talking to me. Rude people still got taken care of, but i didn't share the free service with them.

    I worked at a coffee shop for 2 summers. This was an area where very wealthy folk from a nearby city would spend their summers. Most were wonderful, however that 2 percent, oyyy! I had a woman come up to the cash register, I rang her up and watched while she picked out all of the pennies in her change purse and put them in the tip jar. I just stared in disbelief. Working behind a counter should be a mandatory service after graduating from high school.

In my country, it is NOT MANDATORY to tip. Most of the time, there is no tip jar but instead a jar or box plastered with a picture of a charity that the establishment supports. Some of it would even have "every penny counts" quotation (peso in our country's case). No one would get mad at you for not putting anything on it nor would they shame you nor talk behind your back.

    Former cashier here. I once was working the express checkout at my store when a lady steps away from my till to get a drink out of the cooler about 10 feet away while I'm scanning her items. On her way back, she and I both notice that she's left the door open on the cooler but rather than close it herself, she says, "Can you have one of the girls close that door? I'm in a hurry."
    "Certainly," I say with a big smile. Then, since I am, in fact, 'one of the girls', I step away, walk around the till, and mosey over to the cooler behind her to close it myself with her watching me the whole way. Then I calmly returned to the till and continued scanning her items.
    She didn't say another word. :)

    The only two times I’ve sent food back was once because I was picking up food for a group and the pasta still had shrimp on it (even though I had made it very clear that that dish was for someone who was ALLERGIC- Like, trip to the emergency room allergic) and one because I was served strawberry daiquiri that was heavy on the rum. I had ordered it as virgin… because I was 13…

    I used to work the showroom sales floor at IKEA. It would get so busy on weekends and there were so few co-workers that we would be chased after, hunted down, grabbed by the arm, etc. (Just so someone could ask where to find a specific piece of furniture they could only describe with unhelpful descriptors like "table" and "white" and of course no photo or article/tag number.) The worst was when people would try to snap at you from across the room like you're a dog! I always made a point to pretend to ignore those people and help the polite ones first, but I made sure to make eye contact with them so they knew that I saw what they did and was making the choice to help someone less rude before them. :) Nobody ever complained about me because (at least to customers,) I'm sweet to a fault, and exceedingly patient with those who choose to leave their braincells at home to inflict pain upon unsuspecting retail workers.

    I've worked in kitchens for a while and the quip about cooks getting excited about making a dish "extra spicy" is so true lol. Once a customer asked for his dan dan noodles to be extra spicy, so I went HAM. The sauce is orange when it's mixed with the noodles, but it was red for this customer. I told the server, as I handed the dish out, that "his asshole belongs to me now."
    On a petty note, speaking of noodles, I once had a customer complain that her noodles were "grossly under cooked." Our noodles were blanched for 45 seconds for every dish, that was the standard, to make them al dente because once they get mixed in the sauce it continues cooking and will expand and soften (basic science, honestly). So I blanched those noodles for 2 whole minutes before mixing them with the sauce. It was so sloppy and squishy. Gave it to the server and said, "enjoy your slop."

    I had these 2 old guys come through and I felt like being nice so I changed the price to the cheaper price and let them know, and the driver snapped "Why are you making it cheaper!?". So I said "Sorry sir, I'll change it back." And switched it back. It's dollar coffee days. He paid over 6 dollars where he could have paid about 3.

    The chef sending the same dish back when you complain is 100% true. Where I used to work, if someone said the food was cold, we'd just put the same food on a warm plate and send it back to them.

    I work at a small store and there’s little baskets that people can drop their food in and out on the counter when done. If the person helps takes out their food, I be as quick as I can and thank them verbally. If the person doesn’t and it’s a lot of items in the basket, I take my sweet time wasting their time as I take out each item carefully, scan it, make sure it scanned on the screen and repeat. Adds at least an extra minute. It’s not big but it’s weirdly satisfying to me.

    These kind of things happen because previous generations were raised with the belief that “the customer is always right”. Something we never should have been taught.

    I have a young child and make it a big deal "DON'T FREAKING TOUCH ANYTHING" at stores for this reason. Worked in retail for 5 years so I know. Power to the retail employees
