  • My demo of the absolutely brilliant overdrive pedal made by Lovepedal Custom Effects. One of the most dynamic and "Amp-Like" pedals on the market...dare I say of all-time.

This pedal "will" compliment the right amp / guitar combinations in all the right ways and do everything you show and explain perfectly in this demo. Yep i bought the same one two yrs ago.

I agree! Prospective pedal buyers need to understand that they are, even with this kind of pedal, only going to be pushing their base tone. Its so important that you get your base tone right. There's no magic 'amp in a pedal' thing in reality. What you get out is what you put in plus 11.

Oh man, I love your tone thru the Plexi SE and the AC15, which AC15 is that btw? And the playing is great, with a thoughtful explanation of the how the pedal works, this is one the best pedal demos on YT!
Is that a Fralin Pure PAF 8.0K or lower in the bridge? Do you have that same bridge pickup in the Goldtop now? Great bark in that Fralin pickup like some '58 Les Pauls have. Now please play a Strat on this same setup. Keep these great videos comin'.

Its a AC15C1 with a creamback speaker. This is still a very bright amplifier, but his amp EQ is very midrange heavy with very little treble/cut. You can get this nice woofy/woody tone out of Vox amps using the EQ. Its a very vintage Marshall tone tbh.

First of all, thanks for posting these videos, they're absolutely great, as is your playing! I was wondering if you can help me out; I've been on the lookout for a Purple Plexi for a while, but if you live in Europe they're either kind of hard to come by or very expensive. The Jubilee and the Plexi 100 (and boost) seem to be easier to find, what would you say are the main differences between these and the Purple Plexi? I have my eye on a black Plexi 100 (with the boost), but I can't seem to find any really good videos (or maybe I just don't really like the playing on the ones there are). Would it be worth getting that for the time being in your opinion?

@@whynottalklikeapirat Its the same circuit. There isn't much wiggle room really. Clones tweaked the gain pot to a 1k reverse linear to give a hair more transition between gain off and gain on full retard and some people changed 1 cap to tame some of the treble in to brighter amps. That's about it. You can try other dual op amp IC's but it does what it does and sounds how it sounds.

@@cgavin1 Thanks for the reply - interesting. I own the purple one, and I love it unto itself but I find that in my setup it tends to disappear in the mix, especially compared to more midsy pedals’. I am running a strat into super reverb, and it might be different with say a gibson into a marshall, but as it is its’ not really practically usable for my setup unless I were to center everything else around bringing that one pedal to the fore. I guess the dynamic aspect comes from it being pretty scooped and that comes at a cost …

    • @cgavin1
      @cgavin1 2 года назад

@@whynottalklikeapirat Yeah I run a twin myself and this pedal isn't really what these amps are "all about". Maybe if your Fender had celestions or warm Eminence speakers it would work. But Jensen style speakers will sound like ass with that much gain. I am 30 years late to the pedal scene - never had much use for them during the 90's when you could still use the PA for vocals only at most venues and annoyingly missed out of the Klon when it was affordable hehe. As far as I can tell what determines the character of your OD is the speakers in your amplifier. Since 99.9% of amps of all brands are going to be 12AX7 in the preamp what you are hearing is essentially the sound of a tortured 12AX7 (which is pretty universally the same sound) plus about 10% the sound of your particular guitar/pickup combination (mostly reflected in lower mids and bass emphasis) with the rest being speaker. Obviously the "tone" of a pushed Marshal is going to be mostly the "Greenback sound" which can be broadened out in to the "Celestion" sound in the modern era. So if you think about what is going on its a particular EQ curve projected through a bunch of extremely familiar and consistent small tube distortion and what you actually HEAR is that smashed through a particular kind of mid heavy ceramic speaker.
TL;DR All tube amps sound the same with OD pedals and the only real difference in what you hear is the speaker type, power rating and magnet type. If you want to sound great and vintage at lower volumes you want a 20w Greenback to push or you want a big fat middy speaker like a Vintage 30 that will hold together the bass and mids tighter at higher volumes. To be honest the most vintage Marshall sounding speaker of them all is the Alnico Blue. It covers everything from Tweed to Plexi.
Edit: Since I never use the normal channel on my Twin (like most people) I modded it to basically be a Marshall and can happily run these kinds of drives in to that and out the extension cabinet socket in to w/e speaker is required for the gig/venue. Its called the "lead channel mod": robrobinette.com/AB763_Modifications.htm#Lead_Channel_Mod
99% nobody is ever going to do this as "standard" but I'm a single amp guy and after 30 years of playing the same amp and really loving the Jensen P12N's in it for most music types and stages I went full retard. :) You could do the same thing minus the circuit mod on the normal channel. Just get a couple of greenbacks, match the right ohms for your extension cabinet and do it that way through the super. Cheaper than another amp. ;) I'm sure you have a mate who already has a celestion loaded cabinet.. give it a try it really makes a huge difference. I have a Creamback 65 1x12 same as what the OP has in his Vox here. Works a treat. I also have a $50 GH75 celestion loaded 4x12 I got on eBay from a thrash metal dude rated for 10000 watts hehe. Also sounds immense!

@@cgavin1 Thanks man - what a wealth of useful information!
Yeah - the super is a 71 silverface, mostly original parts and I suspect some of it still out of the old black face stocks which allegedly was still floating around back then.
It’s vintage jensens in there allright and I know a special tube guy, who got me some really awesome tubes. Could be old russian ones I can’t remember, but they do this “blank canvas for pedals” thing very nicely and it’s very open, warm and beefy sounding. None of the bad fender-fizziness. It takes fuzz really well and actually the Purple Plexi sounds pretty awesome on low gain settings (no real reason to actually dime it for what I do, the transients pretty much deliver that initial raspy growl) - it’s just that it’s not entirely in the right place and I believe you are right about how the EQ curve of the speakers match that of the drive.
In this setup I am not really pushing the amp into overdrive, it seems like the days when you could dime a super at a club or wedding gig are about over xD - but I suspect thats actually why it handles the overdrive comparatively well. My basic crunch is a handwired mad professor sweet honey. It sounds awesome into the super for all the meat and potatoes. Then for some things I run a small red fuzz face into that, and it cleans up like you wouldn’t believe, delivers a decent overdrive in the midrange an awesome poetic lead at near max and total classic fuzz when at full volume.
What I am mostly struggling to achieve well is that classic searing marshall lead. I can get a very decent AC/DC tone out of my shredmaster, but like the plexi it has that tendency to easily disappear or mud out. And AC-Booster pushed with an RC-booster stands out better, but it’s still not quite that searing lead.
My marshall head is down so I haven’t been able to test with that for comparison.
But I think you are right and it’s most likely something of a loosing battle. It’s just that I don’t have much access to experimenting with speakers …

The pedal is very cool but I don't think it responds well to being babied, or to casual blues playing. To get the most out of it, you have to play raucous, high energy arena rock riffs--early Van Halen, for example. That's my sense from watching several demo videos.
