WHAT? No one ever talks about it? No, that is crazytalk. It is one of the most talked about voices of the time. Stop going to the bingo games and wondering why they aren't talking about him.
When a Steely Dan producer asked in an interview how Donald sang into the rhythm back in the 70's he said :"He punched in" means he kept singing until the track was perfect. By the tune and the rhythm together.
Jon Heringtgon - honoring Jay Graydon while putting his personal touch on it. What a monster in every way! Hard to believe what I just heard. Pretty close to perfection.
Now imagine him doing it 100 times at once and you have the record 😛 and I doubt I'm exaggerating, from what I saw the mini-documentary on the making of "Aja" the album./
I learned Jay Graydon's solo in Peg note for note when it came out, and performed it live many times. It is harder than it sounds. This guy was allowed to riff his own solo and his tone and choices were far from the masterpiece Jay Graydon laid down on the original. He did the same to Larry Carlton's masterpiece in Third World Man.
I cannot believe I have just stumbled onto this! This is the “Classical” music our kids and grandkids should be embracing and studying. The caliber of all of the musicianship is worth the price of a ticket. I would like to personally thank the genius who put this touring act together.
There are definitely lots of younger fans out there. I'm 27, but I know of younger people than me who are heavily into this era of music. Great music lasts forever. It might not stay in the top 100 forever, but It will always have a legacy that far outpaces the generic stuff we've been fed for a long time now.
LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING…… EVERY ONE OF THOSE MUSICIANS ( Out outside of the originals, ) WERE PROBABLY EXCITED TO BE INVOLVED IN THIS SONG ! THIS HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE SONG FROM STEELY DAN SINCE IT CAME OUT ! 1977 I was 8 years old ! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Don’t recall seeing Jesus in this group so, according to the Bible, you’re taking the Lord’s name in vain! If that means nothing to you now, I can promise you on the authority of the Word of God, that one day when you’re giving an account of your actions here on Earth, you will!
@@nashvillecop1 The laws of the Bible only apply to Christians. It's not a universal rule book. Stop policing people's language and worry about yourself.
I was wondering why this sounds so good: it’s due to great performances, mixing and the fact that Mike McDonald and Donald Fagen nailed the original recording. Well done, Gentlemen.
Agreed. This is my favorite live version of Peg EVER. It is hard to believe that a live version could be as good as the studio recording which was so heavily produced and crafted to perfection.
Damn, how pro are all these people to just rip on their instruments and sing in perfect pitch? The ultimate professionals. Never a bad cord or beat after the 10,000 hours. ❤
This is so tight! Nothing hurried, so clean, oh and folks this is live, no editing no auto tune! I hope some kids are watching this, cuz someone has to keep this going!!!
Wow Donald, always so tight and beautiful. Each musician an expert. The complex backing vocals with Michael and your long time backup singers it's like ear candy. Miss Walter. Bravo to you and the band for keeping it going!!
Magical… I’ve always been obsessed with this song then to hear it live and it sounds so amazingly the same and different in the best way imaginable almost better…no words

Thank God his manager encourage him to sing (Gary Kantz? or something like that? Sic?) Great gig. So much great music + astute cultural observations. Genius!
Still so very distinct though. (I used to have a near perfect voice- not so much anymore I’ve lost a lot of range, but I can still sing along with SD. It’s an injury that’s taking years to heal- but it’ll never be what it was and that’s fine!)
I remember hearing this song in the late 70s being too young to know who were the musicians and singers. Unlike any other song I'd heard before, there was one voice, in the background, that stood out and got my attention like never before. "Peeeeeg!" Who was that??? It's such a pleasure to see this group perform the song and to see Michael McDonald as that voice.
Mike’s voice really adds that special ingredient singing the lower backing with the girls here. They sound great. Digging the guitar work in all of these. Wonderful ad libs. As usual, John is perfect. Cheers.
Every time I hear this song I think of when it first came out and hearing it on KFRC in San Francisco. Dr. Don Rose would yell, "P-e-e-e-e-e-e-g," whenever he'd play this song.
This is three of my favorites ! I just found out about it and ordered it to watch with my wife on New Years Eve. We have seen them all separately live . But will be a good way to kick off the evening!
That great sound comes from Every Musician perfecting his or her craft to produce the best rendition of that song as possible...GREAT band...The guitar solos were right on, every note...Thanks for the post...

As a keyboard player, I think it would be great to just have to haul around a tiny melodica and THAT would be your entire setup. This is so nice to hear live with Mike McDonald's backing vo
Amazing how Steely Dan material still sounds fresh all these decades later. Still remember when Aja first came out. Groundbreaking music.
No one ever talks about Donald's singing but he is so unique and special it's real soul.
WHAT? No one ever talks about it? No, that is crazytalk. It is one of the most talked about voices of the time. Stop going to the bingo games and wondering why they aren't talking about him.
It's that New Jersey Accent that makes the singing voice.
When a Steely Dan producer asked in an interview how Donald sang into the rhythm back in the 70's
he said :"He punched in"

By the tune and the rhythm together.
Yes, and he has that Ray Charles head bob.
He's not much of a singer, but he's doing well, all things considered.
This is the EPITOME of Musical Art! At its FINEST! Wow…..I LOVE IT!!!!

This is probably the ONLY group that can do Steely Dan songs, and no one will complain about it!
Well, when at least three have been with S.D., what do you expect?
It is 90% of the Steely Dan touring band.
I think this band does a really good job, certainly no complaints from me...and they are mostly from Russia!

2:54. Just to hear Michael sing the words "foreign movie" in that really odd-interval harmony, and keep it perfectly on pitch. Always makes my day.
He did it just as well as the original studio recording, very impressive.

Michael and that lovable stuffy tenorish voice. Hard to explain....

Michael's singing that part in time, Fagen is the one singing odd time.
It makes me sad that these amazing musicians are getting older. But so am I, I grew up listening to these guys, U feel blessed 😊

That young drummer is in heaven!!

That guitarists tone was just incredible!

His name?
That solo paid some homage to the original solo yet was also pretty different - this is exactly the balance that one could hope for.
