For me, "Shadow of the Hawke" has the best final chase sequence. No dialogue, just 4+ minutes of great music and action shots while String & Dom hunt down Moffet. The follow-up of String pulling the trigger even when it's clicking on empty until Dom's soft spoken "It's over, String", made it even better.

In my head after I could see them going back and later at the lake we see that hawk buried her near his cabin. It was even released as a 'theatrical' film in some countries, methinks.
Some First Season episodes (at least 4 others, which are on this list) nearly matched the calibre of this inaugural show. But, partly due to network meddling ('creative interference'), later seasons never measured up to the great potential this film - way superior to Blue Thunder (1983) - hinted at 🎥😎

    "2ND PART----
Great results stem from discussions between writers and production departments until it feels right, that's how success is arrived at, by tweaking and refining the elements, its not by chance, its hard work, focus, determination, creative instincts and discipline of those behind the show, individually and collectively.
It's like they sat down and said... 'ok...how can we make this cooler?... until they couldn't any more'... The hidden desert location, the back story, the sound of screaming turbines with a turbo boost, the most sophisticated helicopter kids have likely ever seen, customised to look as absolutely bad-ass as possible, yet at the same time believably realistic maybe in the military somewhere, added to a pulsing high energy synth tune, etc. - The combination of all these things made for an irresistible and potent cocktail for 80s youngsters, probably lads mostly, primed on star wars, which you'd only see a couple of times a year before acquiring a VHS player, yet this was on the telly every week!...Wow!
It would be unfair to compare a tv show, even a quality one with the production values of a mainstream movie, yet in terms of 'excitement levels', this was up there, as good as a lot of films, that's how good this was. In context hard to see how they could have made it better. Great choices make for great results so thanks again for a great show and treasured memories.
As with truly inspired projects, the elements combine to create something greater than the individual parts. The on screen chemistry between the actors was spot on. As a kid you knew that a lot of the other TV shows at that time were a bit, well . . . 'cheesy', yet with 'Airwolf', the acting seemed to be played a shade more realistic, perhaps that's why it felt a little more serious or film like than some of its counterparts. The camaraderie between Hawk and Dom was playful, and welcome after intense scenes of aerial combat. Much of the time there was an underlying edge, perhaps coming from Hawks determination to find his brother, you knew even as a kid that this underlying motive was good! his distrust of governments, probably after serving in Vietnam, in any case, the elements of the writing were cohesive, even the location of Airwolfs hidden base in a desert cave and seeing this menacing machine rising up ready for the next mission as some kind of protector in the sky or unbeatable guardian for the forces of good, ready for whatever they may encounter, set you up for a high octane ride which usually delivered.
Why was it the favourite show from that time for many people? Apart from the Cohesion, more specifically? the premise was just head and shoulders above other shows... the concept, what was set up, where it took you and how it got you there. Other 80s shows were popular for different reasons like being outright entertaining, or popular and funny, this show carved out its own territory and struck a 'Chord', with alot of people because it just had well, so much to it. The A-team may have been funnier and cool in a family kind of way, but Airwolf offered a high-tech sleek weaponised power ride with prestige, that was incomparable. It resonated in fact an intense 'Dont F--K with me' attitude throughout much of the action which compared to a glare from B.A. Baracus for a few seconds in the A-Team, other shows really didn't key in to that element of what appealed to youngsters at that age, though each show was successful on its own merits.
The A-Team - mercenaries for hire in downtown L.A. very entertaining, great characters however the type of action you'd pretty much seen already in 70s cop dramas and war films. The inventiveness was fun but it seemed a bit silly, a family show with loveable characters.
Magnum - quirky charming private investigator with a nice car and a gun on a pleasant island, how many cop detective shows had you already seen? far from original and the script relied heavily on the likeability of Tom Selleck.
Knightrider - to be fair, a great tv formula show for sure, with some interesting technology, a good idea well done but how many car chases had you already seen? probably thousands and bear in mind the dukes of hazard had pretty much squeezed about as much out of watching a car jump over stuff as you could probably delight to. A cool show but in the confines of the premise didn't allow you to get that excited, because you knew from the off it could only be this or that. The TV channel often got changed, Kitts voice was about as far away from menacing as you could get, almost C3PO, if they'd have used some ED-209 style dialogue, then they'd have a different show on their hands! and maybe that's kind of the point, it wasn't 'bad-ass', just playful really, a novelty for what it was, family teatime programming.
With Airwolf you had a guy that had gone through a ton of crap that was sure as guns was gonna f--k some stuff up, it was intense, almost dark, bad-ass and menacing, well, as threatening as Ernest Borgnine could be pushed to on an off day. Also in Airwolf, the air combat sequences and often just the presence of this ultra-modern helicopter was sheer intimidation, it was about aerial superiority, supremacy, nerve, metal, reflex, a battle of wits and skillful stealth using state of the art technology, dogfighting tactics and man and machine working in unison to create an unbeatable force for good, searching for truth and justice, as was the ethos of the central character, and its what 'you' felt whilst engaging in the show. It was easily possible to believe that this helicopter actually existed somewhere in the military.
The writers did a really good job to make the lead character likeable with his scowling, moodiness yet by moment warmth and humor, your heart went out to the guy when you learnt of his experiences and what had led him to this, you . . . 'Rooted' for him, you were on his side, a goody, a good guy, you wanted him to win. Bottom line... you cared, so you bought into it, the story, his friends and what happened, you always wanted them to get out of a scrape. There was a nice blend of contrasts from Hawk venting his anger in the interior shots through narrow eyed concentration, in 'out for justice' mode, to his more reflective nature playing a musical instrument in a boat on a lake in the mountains with a log cabin and caring for his dog, picturesque, rich, and made for a more overall feel to the character.
To get a sense of context, for kids born mid 70s whose minds had meandered from things like The Wombles & Worzel Gummidge onto shows like C.H.I.P.S , Dukes of Hazzard and The Fall Guy, all very terrestrial and unthreatening. Outside of Science fiction space based cartoons, which were, well...cartoons. A believable real world action high-tech type thing for kids had just not showed up yet, so when this did, it just seemed... incredible, unbelievable, it pushed a lot of buttons that had been in waiting.
So why was this such a great Show next to other good shows of the same era? ... Good creative intuitions maybe, true inspiration leading to a Great concept well executed, boldness backed up by the effort and budget to realise it. Great visuals, great sound, insightful understanding of the medium and who it was appealing to.

Thankyou for making this really Excellent Superb video. The tone is just right, totally respectful to the show, a true fan, Well done! that requires alot of creative integrity. The music spot on as well , some classic synths from that era and great choice of clips. Other shows like the A-team, and Knight Rider were great, so trying to pin down why Airwolf was such a good show and a 'firm' favourite amongst so many people..... from the off, the early 80s saw the realisation of the power of the image, from pop videos like Aha's 'take on me' with duran duran attributing alot of their success to their early videos, 'Look' was key... crucial and to this end Airwolf eminated an air of high level sleek sophistication and technology, from the digital cockpit displays to the aesthetic lines of an amped up prestige helicopter. Add futuristic synthesizer music and the technological spell was cast. Its weapons, tech & top secret military ops all in one show!
Stripping it back to basics, the simple germ of the idea of a high-tech helicopter in itself, was something the generation hadn't seen before so Well done for making something 'Original', that captured your attention and made a great basis for a hit show. Along side this at the same time was the dawning of the era of home computers and video games, allowing the look of the shows graphics to merge with what you almost had in your bedroom on a commodore 64 or Amstrad for example, with a quickshot 2 joystick, this allowed you to put yourself in the pilot seat.
The digital futuristic feel of the show at times stretched as far as science fiction in some of the sequences. Other layers of coolness were added from the overtones of Vietnam, with 'String' as the troubled ex-combat pilot played to perfection by JMV, hitting the key emotional tone for the show as successfully as watching Tiger Woods strike a hole in one. A real talented actor and above all - the right man for the job. If his life challenges spilled over into rendering a better portrayal of one of his characters then countless thanks and respect to him from millions of fans for this!
What was magic as a kid was how simple it was just to watch . . . pure experience, no analysing, you just knew that it was cool, it rocked, was action packed, made you feel great! and as someone wrote, from the second you heard the music, it was...Lets go! ...what a lucky time to be around, such a wonderful and incredibly fertile period for the imagination... it made weekends Great!
The Show took cool elements from several areas and melted them together skillfully in a way to create overall cohesion. It would be nice to experience this more now. At times just about perfect, but it didn't have to be, it knew what it was and when you know that, its enough, because everyone making it is then working from the same song sheet, like that, everything comes together, and with a little luck, things stay on course long enough to get a few series, and for those that 'get into it' to sit back and enjoy the fruits and rewards in the awesomeness of the inspired moments. Like James bond this cohesion of elements arrived at something polished enough to pack a punch that left you in no doubt that something truly remarkable had just happened to you and left you armed with snippets for playground conversations and observation morsels to chew on for a good while. Tremendous fun, a romp, a joy to watch, a reward, a treat, a reason to love life even more, putting extra bounce in your step and warmth in your smile!

I know they recycled footage of Airwolf fighting quite a bit but still the budget musta been huge for that show. Hell most of those 80s action shows had massive destruction and big stunts on every episode. Definitely an era to remember.

I had a DVD of Airwolf that my uncle bought in 2006 when i'm just a year old. I grew up watching Airwolf and animal documentaries instead of just cartoons. And i had a habit of only watching the final battles of every episodes, and even recording them... haha. When i turned 13 i got to understand some plot on most episodes and i tried to watch them at entirety. That's where i realised why i always fast-forward my DVDs on action battles - some later episodes of Airwolf are boring at first act lol, but i find myself enjoying the dark themes and espionage of the episodes of season one especially as a teenager. I mostly agree with these listed episodes here. And yeah... the original episode is always will be the best... i got to watch it again..

Interesting list; It's surprising how many people's list features the Pilot and how high up it seems to rank; it seems to have bobbed up and down in popularity a bit over the years in my experience, it didn't make my list though I don't dislike it. 'Random Target' is an interesting choice, it's one of the second season episodes I always considered middling, maybe I better go and take another look! :D 'Fight Like a Dove' is okay though not a top-tenner for me, I took to it a bit more in more recent years.

Great list. Noticeable that apart from 'Airwolf 2' it's all from season 1 and very early season 2. The decline in quality throughout the show's run was a shame. Sylvester Levay was a genius.

    • @pjgathergood6987
      @pjgathergood6987 3 года назад +1

I noticed that too. :) The show plummeted at the start of the third season and the departure of Donald P. Bellisario, sinking to some very trivial and un-Airwolf-like "family drama" stories, and some that had all the ingredients on paper but just somehow had a very different on-screen feel and was often very different in tone. As the season progressed it seemed to find it's footing slightly more (I've got two s3 episodes in my own Top 10 that I've posted on the page; and I also quite like 'Where Have All the Children Gone?') but it certainly wasn't as good.
Then again, after seeing the abysmal Canadian-produced fourth season (designed simply to bump up the episode count for syndication), it's slightly more a case of "come back third season, all is forgiven!" :D
