Nice entry-level explanation of CRI/TLCi/SSI. I used to do color science (for inkjet printers of all things) and I can appreciate a good, simple explanation when I hear it. I could never manage it - I always felt the need to inflict the concept of "metamerism" (your "something that... would look blue looking like a slightly different shade of blue") upon my listeners in excessive detail. The blue spike at the short wavelength end of the spectrum is the blue driving LED "shining through" the warmer phosphor coating. The designers have to do that because the phosphors are too yellow relative to the desired daylight color temperature (CT), so they have to let some raw LED emissions through to cool the overall balance. Tungsten LED lights have better SSI because they can rely almost entirely on the broadband phosphor to reach the target CT (very conceptually, the phosphor layer is "thicker" and allows much less of the spiky LED to shine through)
Thanks Patrick, especially for the details on the blue spike and how the designers achieve their color output. I've long wondered why all the daylight balanced LEDs have that big spike.
Like always, really appreciate your format, Especially when you place the information or the camera config. So we get a better understanding. If you place it always like a logo it will be awesome, or and overlay style, that pops up like 4 times in the complete video showing where the light source comes from on the shot that on the screen at the moment. I would like to know whether 600D Pro would be sufficient for this purpose, or should I go with 1200D Pro for my use case. Thanks in advance!
1) For the violin shot, the light is outside of the house, about 1 meter from the window and the violin player is about 2 meters from the window. 2) The text indicates. For example, in the case of the violin shot, I used the Aputure Light Dome II soft box. 3) Yes, unless the room is 40 square meters and has 8 meter ceilings, this should be enough light. Most quality LED lights made for video production with tungsten color balance have an SSI > 80. A few which come to mind: Aputure 300x, D&O lighting 180W, Lupo Superpanel (all models).
Hi! I got an idea, which might already be covered, in that case please excuse my ignorance, but couldn’t you make a video on how to use household lights and furniture to make a professional-looking setup at home, while not feeling like you live in a studio?
Thanks for the review. Really enjoy how you present the info. I wonder if Fodovil/Pixel will make a knock-off like they did the with Aputure 120. I have a couple and love them.
Great insight about why this might be more useful than it seems at first, even for not-high-end productions. Watching some of the examples that Luke Seerveld has shown on his channel based on units like the Joker 800 shows what a powerful single point light like this can do. A 6'x6' book light, shooting the light into ultrabounce then through unbleached muslin - for a 3/4 shot is a fantastic "pro" or "high end" look. (When you have the gear and space!) Also, you mention that Aputure is filling out both the high end (like this) and the low end, like their recently announced Amaran units. I have been interested in the Apurture 60w unit, but might you have any insight into how their Amaran 100w and 200w units might compare? Hmmm?
Hi Thomas, thanks! Good question re: the 60. I don't know enough about it but it looked like a dedicated, focusable spotlight rather than a general purpose light. The new Amaran's seem more like general purpose fixtures.
If you shoot with a soft box with white diffuser, does that measurably change SSI or are the colors effectively the same? I was thinking if the diffuser or all that silver bouncing, if any of that spreads the wavelength distribution slightly
@@curtisjudd cool cool, makes sense since (most of the LED color comes from the LED coating I think). But SSI was that basically the same? Or did that blue spike become less spiky?
To be honest, this is the prosumer, lower-cost option relative to HMI lights which are so common on bigger production sets. I don't know of any other light which puts out anywhere close to this light for less money. Though you might have a look at the Aputure 300DII or the Godox VL300 for about half the light - still plenty for a LOT of situations.

Hi Adam TV, I definitely do NOT see it as a deal breaker. This light is the type you generally use from a bit more distance so it won't be right up next to your microphones.
Lower SSI could be because they are using a blue emitter. Some of the YUJI LEDs use a violet emitter and claim to have very high color ratings. Their own photometric reports look like they will result in a very high SSI. I wonder how they would stack up.
@@curtisjudd I don't. I have an order that will be delivered next week. For christmas, I am giving my family YUJI bulbs for regular E26 socket lights. Life is too short to look at hardware store LED bulbs. I think you are going to need to DIY something, as I am, with the YUJI LEDs. Looking at thier photometric reports, I'd guess that Aputure is using an emitter very similar to YUJI or Waveform Lighting. Your SSI measurment matches thier report almost exactly. However, the D50 and VTC LEDs from YUJI and the D50 and D65 from Waveform lighting are using emitters that are around 395-400nm, which is right at the edge of visible light. YUJI and Waveform have emitters that produce almost as much 400nm energy as 485nm and just slightly less than the rest of the spectrum up to around 673nm, which is close to the start of the IR range (700-800nm). YUJI has a neat 16w PAR30 bulb with an integrated focusing lens. Same spectral plot as this as this Apurture light. I have 4 on order along with a bunch of other stuff from them!
Starting as a photographer with 2400 w/s packs, 4' x 6' softboxes and 7' umbrellas, I always felt I never had enough light when shooting video. This light might change that thinking.
13:49 you might consider warning before flickering lights, in case some viewers suffer from epilepsy. Seemed a bit too easy to enable that flickering too!
The 600 pro is definitely a pro light, BUT it's at a good price point for those with a smaller budget, this gives smaller studios and creators the tools to produce professional content
There is a "non Pro" version on the way without DMX that will be of even better value for small studios. It will have the same power and build from what I understand but it will not be available for a few month.
@@curtisjudd I noticed that too. From what I can tell the Amaran 200 will not be as powerful as the 300d mk ii in terms of total output (looking at the power draw) but I will be looking forward to some full reviews. They are certainly budget in terms of power output but the non Pro 600D promises to offer the top power output at and "affordable" budget. My point was really that a lot of small studios will not need DMX and they will be able to save money by waiting for the non pro version if they are interested in the output level of the 600D.
That background is starting to look awfully like Ge.... oh never mind. He already commented! JK Curtis - your videos are always fantastic. I've found I've bookmarked many of them. Thanks for all your input.
I know the LEDS are rate at 50,000 hours, but is there any real info on how many hours the light works before it fails? there are no real standards in rating LED modules and their time to failure. If there is no way to replace the actual LED module, I would like to know how long I can rely on this light before having to throw it out and buying a whole new light instead of just an hmi bulb
@@curtisjudd yes that too! Although the fans look like case fans that you can replace whenever they fail. Plus the lights shut off when they get too hot and there's no fan. A good idea would be to attach a label to the back which reminds people to check the fan
I am a real estate videographer . How good is this light to light up a big space in a house (living room, dining room , etc. ) nicely , To the point that I can almost balance it to my outside window shots to have almost a balanced exposure with the outside so I dont have to blow out the windows ! ?
Argh why didn't RUclips recommend your video. I also thought that notifications were on, but apparently not. Edit: video not channel, that made the comment very confusing
Curtis... Thanks for you job but honestly I'm starting to have doubt about your true fairness between Godox and Aputure. "0.4G" is not what you were expected on the Godox Sl150; but 0.5G are normalizing with the time on the Aputure 600D pro.... Those 0.5G are not even on the cons! SSI at 72 is pretty good on the Aputure 600d; but SSI at 71 on the Godox VL300 is too closely from the 60's. Be careful with color rendering issues... Please, just be honest and fair. I know Aputure is sexy, but don't forget we follow cuz we trust you. Don't break that or just assume that you prefer Aputure! Of course it's a sexy brand. But don't amphisize too much the Godox default and reduce the Aputure's default. Look at your cons ! They're not really cons! Here, nothing about the color issue that we have on Godox because of the 71 SSI and the 0.4G CCI... Thanks for you job.
Thanks for the callout. Some fair points there. Experience is teaching me, slowly but surely. I'm concerned about the price/quality value proposition on some of the Godox lights. Maybe they really will turn out to be reliable in the long run. I can say that I am also concerned about how Aputure lights seem to be getting louder in terms of fan noise.

YUJI has a neat 16w PAR30 bulb with an integrated focusing lens. Same spectral plot as this as this Apurture light. I have 4 on order along with a bunch of other stuff from them!
@@DaveBode Thanks for the details and happy lighting!
Starting as a photographer with 2400 w/s packs, 4' x 6' softboxes and 7' umbrellas, I always felt I never had enough light when shooting video.
This light might change that thinking.
Indeed!
What light stand do you use?
I mostly use c-stands but sometimes junior stands.
13:49 you might consider warning before flickering lights, in case some viewers suffer from epilepsy. Seemed a bit too easy to enable that flickering too!
Thanks for the warning. 👍
The 600 pro is definitely a pro light, BUT it's at a good price point for those with a smaller budget, this gives smaller studios and creators the tools to produce professional content
👍
There is a "non Pro" version on the way without DMX that will be of even better value for small studios. It will have the same power and build from what I understand but it will not be available for a few month.
@@AdamTV There is the new Amaran line coming, agreed. Not quite as powerful as the 600D but very useful for a lot of creators.
@@AdamTV Agreed 👍
That background is starting to look awfully like Ge.... oh never mind. He already commented!
JK Curtis - your videos are always fantastic. I've found I've bookmarked many of them. Thanks for all your input.
👍
I know the LEDS are rate at 50,000 hours, but is there any real info on how many hours the light works before it fails? there are no real standards in rating LED modules and their time to failure. If there is no way to replace the actual LED module, I would like to know how long I can rely on this light before having to throw it out and buying a whole new light instead of just an hmi bulb
I'd be more concerned about the fan failing before the LEDs.
@@curtisjudd yes that too! Although the fans look like case fans that you can replace whenever they fail. Plus the lights shut off when they get too hot and there's no fan. A good idea would be to attach a label to the back which reminds people to check the fan
Thanks

I do most of my shooting on churches etc large spaces. May need two for lightning those.
Indeed.
If you could have just one light, would this be it?
Yes, I suppose it would be the one.
nice video : )
Thanks Robbie.
Thank goodness for wives !!
Indeed!
Helpful
Thanks Steve.
God:. Let there be light!
Aputure: *starts flexing*
Kubrick used this light for the moon "landing" right?...
Hahaha! 💡
I am a real estate videographer . How good is this light to light up a big space in a house (living room, dining room , etc. ) nicely , To the point that I can almost balance it to my outside window shots to have almost a balanced exposure with the outside so I dont have to blow out the windows ! ?
It’d be a good fit for that scenario.
@@curtisjudd Thanks so much for your response :)
Argh why didn't RUclips recommend your video. I also thought that notifications were on, but apparently not. Edit: video not channel, that made the comment very confusing
Glad you made it by. I think RUclips is running behind on a lot of fronts at the moment. It took 12 hours to upload this video on Sunday.
@@curtisjudd That is really long. Yeah seem to have a lot of problems. Videos haven't been processing in 4K for months and so forth
@@xWood4000 :Sigh: Come on Google/RUclips, you guys are one of the biggest cloud service providers in the world! We're rooting for you!
Why are you giving the output with a light modifier on 🙄🙄🙄😒😒😒
How would you recommend we do that other than use the included flood reflector? Bare bulb style?
Those guys at Aperture barely sleep
Agreed!
Hahaha, 9:00...
👍
@@curtisjudd You heard those footsteps, too?
My videos are rich with extraneous noise since I shoot them at home. 🙃
Bueno Curtis - you poor guy, you have to take everyone through the basics of "Why SSI over TLCI CRI?" in so many of your light videos. I understand why, but still... #someinfobearsrepeating
We focus on education - we love doing that.

Learn something every day: I didn’t know _gaffing_ was a word (English is my fifth language, so I have no idea where the word _gaffer_ comes from). 🍸
Gaffers do the lighting under the direction of the Director of Photography.
@@curtisjudd Yes, but what does the word _gaffer_ mean in plain English?
@@RustyTube 1) The chief electrician in a motion-picture or television production unit.
2) informal An old man.
3) British informal A person in charge of others; a boss.
@@curtisjudd Excellent! Thanks for the explanation. 👍
@@curtisjudd Hahaha, so a gaffer isn't even their own boss... How nuts our language can be sometimes.
