Wow, I didn’t know productivity RUclipsr watch cinematic RUclips setup video too haha. Anyway, love your video man, I listen to it everyday on the way to work
I use tinfoil wrapped over cardboard that is proped on a shelf but sometimes I tape it on a mic stand. Works rly well and ripple sin tin foil has an awesome effect
Thank you so much for this video. I have horrible natural light in my apartment and I really need it for the products I shoot. This is going to be a game changer ❤
Would love a video on how you made the box for your mirror set up! That would be a greasy video to make like a tutorial on getting a hard case and customizing it for gear
I only recently learned about Light Bridge, and while this doesn't have all the features they have, it's certainly a cheap way to get your mind thinking of lighting with mirrors. The product shots and the overhead shots were fantastic! Great work Caleb!
My video gear and my camping gear are in the same closet and I had bulk ordered the emergency blankets from a discount site and they cost me nothing. I had been thinking of using them for a prop or to test with lighting, but hadn't yet and your video came up yesterday. Just shined my smaller led through and at it real quick with it just loose. It did the thing similar to what my reflector did when I hung it on a nail and watched the footage later which is it seemed to shimmer like water with just the littlest bit of movement. I'm going to be messing with it more, but I did notice the one I had when completely unfolded was somewhat transparent as well.
I've been curious for a while about how useful mirrors could be in terms of multiplying light sources that aren't so powerful by themselves or helping shape light in the absence of barn doors, so thank you for this breakdown! I wonder if even more sun-like results could be achieved with parabolic mirrors?
Love your videos. Thanks for all of your scene set up clips they are super helpful. A tip when using actual mirrors....you could use a heavy duty tape all over the back. This way if they crack or break you have more chance of pieces staying together. :)
This is really neat! What is that cute little light in front of you on the table at the beginning of the video? I don't think it's linked from the description.
the light you reference on ebay is wall powered but the one in your video seems to be powered by a sony battery. I'm interested in a sony battery powered light. Are you adapting it?
I tried using mirrors to fill in some props with direct sunlight but the mirrors we’re giving an even leading to the subject matter. Are there any mirrors that reflect cleanly with no distortions question
I’ll never forget the first time I was on a commercial set and heard the DP ask for a mirror. I thought it was going to be some industry term for something fancy. They pulled out a dusty cracked mirror, clamped it to a c-stand and created a phenomenal streak of light in seconds! Brilliant video Caleb!
I immensely appreciate your cost alternative ideas. I think (and hope) beginners are encouraged by videos like this one to look for creative ideas than just clamoring for expensive equipment.
Hey Caleb, which light are you using at around the 1:14 mark? It looks like it has an F-mount battery on the back, and doesn't seem to be the same as the "cheap light" link in the description.
If you're into mirrors, you should look into Ian Murray, an amazing DP that is notorious for his use of mirrors. The results speak for themselves. Keep the quality content coming man!
I've pressed like first, pressed it again and then AGAIN just so I could like it twice! Unfortunately its not an everyday thing for youtubers to teach somethin 'new' anymore. Every single one of u is talkin about the same damn thing over and over again and acting like its all new. Infact its been a while since I learned somethin brand new about videography watching these channels... until today! What u tought today will change my brand video shooting forever. Thank you so much!
Hi Caleb, what an awesome effect! Just had an idea that would bring this to the next level. By putting a mirror onto a slider, you could create a moving sun effect that looks like a timelapse. This would work even better when changing the temperature of the Aputure Athen same time to simulate a sunset. Putting the camera on a motorised slider as well could lead to shots looking like they have been taken over the course of hours while in reality they were taken in a few seconds.
Over the years, I have learned so many DIY affordable filmmaking hacks from Caleb. Thank you so much for all that you do man! This filmmaking community would not be the same without you here on RUclips!
Super cool! DIY Perks did a video where he tried to create an artificial sun and explained why sunlight/shadows look the way they do. I think you’re implementing a bunch of those same ideas here, but in a much simpler and more affordable concept 😎
This is awesome, Caleb. I heard you on Camera and Flask a few weeks ago talking about wanting to get away from product reviews, and this is awesome and innovative. Another thing about mirrors you didn't mention is that you can squeeze them into spaces you'd never be able to fit a light, _especially_ the setups on posterboard
How are you reading my thoughts? I mean seriously?? Ive been thinking about how to do this, but much more troublesome, ofcorse! Mirros! Thats briliant! Thanx :-)
Thanks for all the advices on cameras gear and how to shoot videos.... got #1000sucribers on 6 months on my Chanel reviewing tech !!! On my 🎂 birthday !!!
Yoooo. ✍Must ✍Buy ✍Mirrors. It looks so heavenly Caleb. My last place had to much sunlight and now Im in a darker apt so I can control that "sunset through the windows" look.
This may have to be a DIY project I take on! I rented the light bridge reflectors for a shoot and I've been eyeing them ever since, just a little too expensive!
Awesome fun stuff I have that same little plant from Walmart so I’m gonna try some things lol. I wonder what happens when you add color gels to the light. Have you tried that? If not there’s another idea to sprinkle on top 😃
Awesome! I love how you continue to focus on balancing budget, value and ingenuity to create high quality images. Tips and skills like this are what I wish more RUclipsrs would implement instead of just sitting in front of a softbox with an RBG light on the background. Hopefully this helps more people see that the tools aren't the thing holding them back. Excellent work Caleb!
There's something comical about a situation where you take a room, black it out so that you can control the light only to introduce the exact lighting artificially. Just makes me laugh. We're going full circle, ladies and gentlemen!
Glass is a little better, but sometimes you get weird edges in the reflection. For most purposes, acrylic is great. It can sometimes have a slight texture which I think looks great.
@@dslrvideoshooter Maybe the weird edges can be fixed by applying gaff tape to the sides. This is so cheap I’ll try both on my own and maybe even try a circular shaped mirror.
interesting thought. In the example with the softbox, tint the led in the softbox to be a higher temp, maybe 6000, max 6500. What might happen is you will get a fake Rayleigh Scattering, creating cooler shadows from a warm daylight source. the cool blue from the ambient, and the warm source being the mirror. Cause right now, though the shape of the light is beautiful and very realistic, Ray scattering from a blue sky filling the shadows doesn't actually happen with leds, because they're programed. I'm curious on camera if this could be a make shift version of actually faking the effect easily and effectively for low budget filmmakers.
I bought the Acrylic ones and tried it, and the results didn't seem to look anywhere close (Used a 300D w/ Fresnel + Barn Doors) It seemed to have this "banding" look as if it were an 8-bit Gradient. It also has this weird jello effect. Anyone else have the same or any solutions?
This is one of the most inspiring production technique videos I've seen in a while. Now heading out to Michael's to buy mirrors haha
Me too bro!!!!
Dido!

love that you said michaels.

Nice tips! I use mirrors for stop motion lighting I've never thought to use them in live action.
Genius! The window / venetian blind look by adding tape is so effective.
I only recently learned about Light Bridge, and while this doesn't have all the features they have, it's certainly a cheap way to get your mind thinking of lighting with mirrors. The product shots and the overhead shots were fantastic! Great work Caleb!
Amazing Video Caleb ! Thanks so much for the alternatives options that you mentioned using too!
Really good idea! I am about to start with some product photography and lighting can be a nightmare! Will try this out. Thanks for sharing!
This is so great, even for photography!
Best video ever! I love it. I can’t wait to try to make sense of it for myself.
So much fun! I'm going to have to try this!
WOOOOOOOW! This is amazing! Thank you so much for the sharing!
This is a game changer thank you so much
Absolutely brilliant

its so noisy loose though, mirrors aren't unless you drop them.
wow! great stuff man..to the point and very useful tips..thank you!

Very informative and amazingly useful content 🙏🏻
🔥💯💯💯🔥
super helpful!!! Thank you so much!!!
High value video, simple, great
Genius bro- genius!

bro you're genius
you are a genius.
Love it! How do you go the opposite way and remove shadows?? :)
This is amazing! Thanks for sharing
Great video! Will you be releasing the Sony A7siii guide soon? Thanks Caleb
Amazing! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing that!
Thanks!
What is the name of the little source you’re using for the mirror ? Thanks 🙏🏼🙏🏼
brilliant.
Very cool ideas but still bugs be the dirtiness of that mirror lol
cool !!! only not spilled shadow lines shows that the light is not sunlight
wow! dope video
This is really neat! What is that cute little light in front of you on the table at the beginning of the video? I don't think it's linked from the description.
Craigslist has mirrors for free or cheap up the wazoo
Christian Berger approves :P
Great stuff! I recently started producing videos (now on my channel), and I have so much more appreciation for youtubers.

Whats that (fake) plant in front of you called?
why dont you use strobes?
Plus: Breaking acrylic won't curse you with 7 years of bad luck.
Totally sicked

Me: Caleb, what have you been up to lately?
Caleb: Mirrors!
Fun video, dude! That overhead shot of you looked fantastic!
Man! Might try it out once I can get my hands on some mirrors
Wow Gerald Undone and I were watching at the same time. amazing!
can´t wait to see one of yours reviews on mirrors!!!! hahahah
Haha! Thats me alright! Thank you for the kind words brotha!
let's get UNDONE!
Hollywood: We can shot this film for $55 million.
Caleb: I can do it for $185 and some tape.
😂
Everyone else on RUclips: But did you know that the Canon C70 doesn't shoot RAW?
Caleb: But have you tried putting a mirror in front of it?
I immensely appreciate your cost alternative ideas. I think (and hope) beginners are encouraged by videos like this one to look for creative ideas than just clamoring for expensive equipment.
Thank you so much! Amazing what you can get using cheap gear. Especially in the lighting department.
Yeah i am so unhappy knowing creating a sun light is so expensive but I came up to this video and dang i am so happy 😊
Oh wow, that was smart.
Trying this right today in my RUclips studio with some cheap mirrors.
Absolutely incredible!
@@AnthonyRose Ha! Hi Anthony!
@@MakeSomething 👋👋👋
Just got myself some acrylic mirrors and finally snagged a friction arm. Thanks for the dope stuff as always

The url for the cheap light doesn't work anymore. What light/price range was it?
If you're into mirrors, you should look into Ian Murray, an amazing DP that is notorious for his use of mirrors. The results speak for themselves. Keep the quality content coming man!

Caleb, add a 0:00 as the beginning chapter and you'll have chapters on the timeline of the video ;)
They have to start from 0:00. 👍
Good save! Completely forgot to add the first 0:00 marker!

Omg you just blew my mind. I love the mirror on a motorized slider idea!
Oml
Imagine creating a spaceship effect
I'm now wondering if I can do this in my darkass apt
This was awesome! I recently updated my bathroom and thankfully I didn’t throw my old mirror out yet haha.
I would use white foam board to increase light. It's the best light you can get. The light coming from mirrors is harsher.
*Genius!*
Wooo, never thought about using mirrors (especially with tape) for light patterns
I'm definitely gonna try it!
Thanks man! Happy lighting!

Awwww you are much too kind!
what an idea! ll try it for sure!! thanks man
Amazing hack! The timing of this video is great as I was just looking into making some DIY Cookies out of foam board. Might try this instead!
Hi! The link to the lighting isn't working anymore. What kind of cheap lighting is this? Also, dope video. Love the mirror idea!
Your tips are just amazing. Thanks Caleb
Oh this is a great alternative since I don't have a light that is compatible with gobos, this could still give me the fake window effect. Great idea.
Thank you Eric!!!
Super cool! DIY Perks did a video where he tried to create an artificial sun and explained why sunlight/shadows look the way they do. I think you’re implementing a bunch of those same ideas here, but in a much simpler and more affordable concept 😎

woooow the window hack is insane!

just great! thanks a lot.
What is the “cheap light” that you used? The link no longer works
This is awesome, i was searching to do exactly someting like this.
Me too.
Do i need a spot Light or could i also go with a normal ,,undirectional" LED panel?
I am so proud to say that I am the 2nd viewer

Such a great practical video. Thanks Caleb.
I was praying for a sunny day to capture the light coming through the blinds, but I'm on a deadline and this is a life saver
I listened to you say the word "mirror" so many times, the word doesn't sound right anymore! Mirror? Me-orrr? Meir?
Game changing lighting there idea . Thanks for sharing.
that was first thing that came into mind when I saw the mirrors: IKEA
What is the difference in look of glass vs. acrylic? Does glass reflect better? Also, does the acrylic bend?
