    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  4 года назад

      We’ll probably need to find you a better teacher! When it comes to light meters I’m afraid I’m not as well versed as I should be. If I did more long form/narrative work I think I would be more adept. I used a meter from time to time when I began gaffing while we were still shooting film, but I would lean on the DP’s knowledge. Then for the better part of twenty years we would usually have an engineer/DIT on set who would keep us in check via a waveform and vector scope, so I relied on that form of metering. In the last ten years or so, as we shifted towards larger chip sensors, every camera has become it’s own film stock, so to speak, and with LUTs applied to RAW, I’m often finding myself again leaning on the DP for their knowledge of the particular camera we’re using that day. With false color added to the mix the camera tools are more and more refined to get us where we want to be, so I’m usually using a meter more to confirm what the DP is doing. In long form I would probably work ahead more often and need to match previous set-ups, which would be a better regimen for building up my metering chops. This is all to say, it may be time to take another pass at getting a better meter reader to walk us through the basics and best practices of on-set metering. Sorry for the wandering answer🤪

    I love the fact that you set up 3 cameras and 2 switchers for this review. That's going above and beyond! Do you think we'll see a 'fire sale' of HMI 800's in the next year? I know that gaffers tend to stick with what they're most comfortable with, but adopting these brighter LED's has more upsides than downsides, I would think. Gotta say that Aputure is very responsive to the lighting communities needs. "Aputure 1K", can it be that far behind?

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  4 года назад +1

      HMI’s are not going away, but this is the next step in terms of competition. Each technology has its downsides and fan noise can be a thing if you are in a small space. Just like the hum or high pitch whine of an HMI, these things can be dealt with, but now new tech is hurdle free:)

      It depends what kind of area you want to hit and with what intensity. An F10 fresnel may be handy to have on hand as well to get nicer shadows. If you don’t have the fresnel available and the output is too harsh, you could see what a light diffusion like Hampshire or 1/2 soft frost does for the look near the window. Luke, how is the fan noise? the beam from on the unit looks soft comper to 800, does it have the same feeling as a sun coming through windows? how many Amp does it need at %100 if it's 15amp if I'm not mistaken I believe Joker is 7.5 Amp?

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  4 года назад +1

      The fan is present, but in most situations will not be an issue. In a tight, quiet space you will need to determine whether the sound person has the skill and tools to deal with it or your post people can handle it. Fans are a simple fact of life for high intensity LEDs. If we want the capabilities and flexibility that LEDs provide production, we will need to accommodate their fans.
      I cannot say whether the quality of the light compares favorably to sunlight coming through a window. With a few grip tools I’m confident you could make it act the part of streaming sunshine.
      I measured the wattage draw when I first got the light. At full output it was just above 700 watts, if I remember correctly. I believe the 15 amps is a designation for the battery charging function of the controller... but I could be mistaken.

There was a question on Newsshooter about your comparison of the Joker to the 600d Pro specifically in the even-ness of the beam. I've always found the Aputure 55º reflector to have a pretty big hot spot, and a commenter felt that this test wasn't an appropriate comparison due to your finding the hot spot on the 600d with your meter. Can you comment about the differences in beam fall-off between the 600d and the J8? To see there didn't seem to be a huge difference, but the scene made it hard to tell. All good! I appreciate you. I’m definitely using more Aputure units on a regular basis, but I’m almost always mixing in units from other manufacturers:) I’m also kind of hack, so if two units are 100-200 Kelvin different from each other, I’m not necessarily correcting that. If a unit is too green or too magenta, I’ll correct it, but I’m not as picky about every little thing as you might think. I think we are very fortunate to have manufacturers who are so on top of their color science as much as Kinoflo, Quasar Science, and Aputure are. That attention to detail helps us all relax a little and spend more time being creative with our lighting. All the best in your work!

    Late to this party.. we are just speccing up a job (int with a light or two poking through the windows from ext) and my 'trad' DP is just not interested in these lights as they cannot be left out in the rain ( he thinks), a bit of rain/drizzle - which happens a lot in the uk - means we must stop shooting which is costly with talent, mua, camera and others in the rented location, he considers the led too much of a risk to the schedule. Do you have comment on the IP ratings of this vs a joker or 1.2 hmi - because he in fact may be very correct in his thoughts.

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  3 года назад

      I’m not a lot of help, because I don’t spend a lot time in harsher weather environments. Not sure where IP54 fits into your DP’s comfort zone, but the 600d Pro is trying to be a unit that can be embraced by those who work in the elements. If I understand correctly, this is more about the head and less about the ballast, which it seems to me would be true of HMI’s as well. Often the best way to change someone’s POV is to bring a new unit on a job and preview it in a real environment while surrounded by all the regular instruments that exude comfort and reliability🙂 All the best!

      @@meetthegaffer these are ip 54? that sounds quite usable - uk delers do not show that spec. Im not experienced in leaving electrical devices out in the rain either (!) but I can see that for a bigger setup (feature size) it might not be practical to break your setup if the sky goes dark. This dp has done some feature/truck genny work wheras I have not.

    Had an Orbiter on preorder for over a year. I dont need colors. The fact that the 600d an be controlled directly from an iphone and is only 2k was enough for me to cancel my arri preorder.

    How did the beam angle compare to the joker in that test?

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  4 года назад +1

      As I recall, they were similar; beyond that I would be speculating. Because I am usually using open units through a modifier/softener, I don’t think about beam angle very often... until I’m using an intensifier like a fresnel or ellipsoidal lens.

    • @gorillacowman1
      @gorillacowman1 4 года назад

      @@meetthegaffer thanks! But even if you're bouncing the beam can make a difference. If your filling the bounce or diffusion you'll have to adjust the distance of the light depending on the beam.

    • @sammorganmoore
      @sammorganmoore 4 года назад

      The beam angle is so critical in a 'test' of this nature - I think the simples thing is to measure maybe three points across the back wall. The Joker could easily be the same power, or a stop or two more. Andrew Locks vid on the 1200HMII vs forza 500 was completely flawed by a lack of investigation of beam angle as once he started bouncing the 1200 it bacame magically brighter thant the 500. As you, Luke, dont 'think' think beam angle you could also fill a 8.8 and test the light output from that ?

    I know this is going to sound like Aperture is made in China crap. But that Joker/Joker Bug Combo is a tank. I can say on par with Mole Richardson. They're built like Tanks. And for an busy industry house that is weary of LEDs, I can't say Aperture is there yet. Maybe great for RUclipsrs in the way a Sony ASIII is a great camera for RUclipsrs and sure if you find a client that doesn't mind (and most don't or can't tell the difference). A Joker with a Mole Tweenie is still an unbeatable combo. And they're so cheap on the secondary market.

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  4 года назад

      Totally get it. LEDs are computers, so it requires a little different mindset towards handling. Easy to say, but hard to do. You have to go with what works for you and the people who hire/rent from you. No one solution fits all situations.
