    On a rush sorta situation we bought a Champaign 22 inch tiller. It had power, but it didn't dig well especially in on hard clay soils. On hills it you hit a slight higher spot then the rest it would almost want to tip over, & the thing would shut off cause it wasn't getting fuel. Got about 2 years out of it. The reverse broke, & the throttle cable weakened, had rig a bungee cord for it to hold. We had a warranty, & after jumping thru a few hoops we got our money back cause throttle cable was no longer in production cause the model was discontinued. Definitely disappointed it didn't last. I looked at a bunch of video on RUclips to what our next tiller will be. After viewing the videos, & reading thru the reviews folks have written, we decided to go with the Yardmax 4565. We're hoping it'll be a good choice for us too. Others looked okay too, while other were a big nope. This Cadet doesn't appear to bad. We did purchase a Cub Cadet commercial grade push mower, I really like it. So easy to operate. I'm very pleased with it. So glad we didn't go with some Honda. Eventually we'll get a rider as we got a half acre. But we'll still keep out Cub Cadet mower. It'll be my work out mower, & the rider will be my get-r-done fast mower lol.

    It's an MTD tiller wit cub cadet badging. You will see many brands that have a side belt guard and a foreward/reverse tine shifter. They have different names and colors but they are all made by MTD.

    I have the older model of this same tiller with the GC190 Honda engine. Bought it new rougly about 10-ish years back. It is an awesome machine and has plenty of power still after all these years. I still look forward to using it every year. The only real complaint I've had about this machine is the counter weight on the front of the unit. With it being plastic filled with what i'm assuming is something like a concrete dust of some sort, I've never really been able to get the counter weight tight. It always seems to work itself loose and now the plastic has busted where the bolt holes are and the inside material is seeping out in these areas. Now i'm ready to just replace the counter weight altogether and possibly mount some tractor weights or something comparable in the place of the plastic factory weight. All in all though, It is still an awesome machine.

    I have rented this exact unit myself, and you are right Coop, it is a very good machine. It is comparable to the more expensive Toro models.

    I’d like to get a rear tine like that. The tiller we have jumps around a bit. All I’d use it for is spaces the tractor won’t fit and between rows.

      This has been a good one so far. With the “Reverse “ gear it stops most of that jumping around. 👍🏻

    I have this tiller. The worst thing about it is that there is no way to slow down the wheel speed. For me forward till is useless. If I am in hard soil, which I am always in when I use a tiller, think about that, I have to have it in reverse till and I have to be constantly pulling back a bit and pressing down. I wish I could just slow down the wheel speed. The wheels always turns about the same speed. There are better tillers out there. I wish I had shopped around more.

    • @wonderwhyfarmhomestead793
      @wonderwhyfarmhomestead793  2 года назад

      I find this to be the case as well. I have always run it in reverse just so I don’t get dragged behind it through the garden 😂 it also could use a slower gear. These are good points 👍🏻

      I’m so sorry you’ve had this experience 😞. Mine has so far worked well, however it was new when I made the video. I was told snd I’m sure it’s true. MTD made it as well as I’m guessing all of them. They just put whatever brand they are making for. We had a Troy Built when I was a kid snd it lasted a long time. Not confident I will get the same like outta this one. Thanks for the feedback and the view ❤️

      @@wonderwhyfarmhomestead793 like lawnmowers, many brands come out of the same plant, very little differences mostly cosmetic.
      The transmissions aren’t user friendly serviceable. The dirt will eventually get in and tear up the chains and bearings. Water gets in and will rust up the shafts.

    Transmissions are the weak point, hard to keep dirt out. It’s a pain to replace the bearings and chains.

      Carb needs cleaned up - needle valve sticking / float stuck - old gas will gum the carb up real bad - take off, soak in gas, make sure all orifices are clear, blow off , put back on and 1 pull with choke 'l do it ( remember when taking linkage off and carb where they go )

    Second year of tilling just under 9 hours reverse tine direction does not work.. just grinds when trying to engage. need to tear apart and see what happened. All other gears work drive forward and reverse and tine forward. Very disappointed with mine .. reverse time is what you want to till with .. forward Direction drags you across the yard. Also wish wheel speed was geared down a bit

    • @wonderwhyfarmhomestead793
      @wonderwhyfarmhomestead793  3 года назад

      I owned a Troy Built Horse some years ago and it was a fine tiller. The Cub compared to it has just as much power and it has the “Reverse Tine Gear” stops the tiller from digging in and taking off. Great for working new ground or if when you hit a rock 😂. Troy Build one I had didn’t have that option.

    I think its a pile of crap and here is why:
    1.) Shifting gears is less than optimal. The problems include:
    1.a) The selection of the gear is very narrow.
    1.b) The gear selection is not consistent within the marked area...sometimes its right at the start, others its in the middle.
    2.) It is super top heavy and the tires are too narrow. Till on anything but level flat ground and your are in a fight to go straight.
    3.) It is heavy..they added a weight to the front to make up for a poor design.
    4.) The shafts are connected via bolts instead of keys.
    5.) Tines turn too slowly.
    6.) Poor design causes grass and weeds to accumulate very fast - probably because the tine speed is too slow.
    After recently using it...some more built in problems.
    7.) Notice the belt guard. See the nut right behind the tire? Yeah that is stupid because now you can't use a socket.
    8.) Nut sizes are different on that belt cover too.
    9.) The belt is "wrapped" via a metal guard that needs to be completely removed AND causes the belt to pinch between it and the pully. I used a cutoff wheel to un-encase these and the belt has never fallen off or gotten stuck again. AND now I can just replace the belt without having to unbolt two extra brackets! (forgot to mention re-added tabs towards other pulley so you can slip the belt on with no bracket/pulley removal needed. If you just cut off the brackets it makes the "slip" part of the belt clutch not work.)
    10.) The engagement system is poorly designed and allows the belt to rub on the pulley while idling...it burns the belt up.
    11.) The forward gearing is too high when tines are forward and tires are forward.
    Its the best tiller 1920's technology can offer! :/
    Overall rating 1/5.
    Looks like yardmax YT4565 ($699 at farmandfleet) would be a better tiller from reviews I have seen. Just looking at it it is similar to this one, but addresses each issue I listed above.
    BTW: I have not bought the above, but from reviews I have seen it would be better. I'll probably modify the Cub Cadet so its more user friendly. Maybe a disc out front to keep the nose straight and a couple cutters along side the wheels so it doesn't wander. Also a couple extra tires to stop it from wanting to flip over when tilling over debris and hitting a rock...kerflop...its on its side.

    • @wonderwhyfarmhomestead793
      @wonderwhyfarmhomestead793  3 года назад

      Thanks for the feed back. I haven’t had and issue with shifting gears as you’ve stated. Part of what I use it on is a hill and in reverse gear it does a good job for me. I’ll grant you the tires could be set a bit wider. Sounds as if you own one as well based on your knowledge and experience. I only have experience with this particular one and a TroyBuilt Horse we had as a kid. That thing was fine if you never hit a rock! I hope the other one you spoke about works out better for you 😊
