- In this video, I go over how to download Power BI Desktop on a Mac.
Power BI is an industry level tool for business intelligence, but it's limitations on a Mac can create trouble for many people looking to use it outside of work, or even for those within companies that are not a part of the Microsoft ecosystem. Installing a Windows operation system to run Power BI on your Mac is the key, and in this video I go exactly how to do that as well as the best tool to use.

This video was very helpful, thanks Matt!
Glad to hear that!
wow excelente, los canales de español ofrecen solo el online o descargar muchos programas, este video me ayudo bastante, es sencillo y rápido solo con un programa ya tengo Windows, thank you so much :)
I'm glad this was helpful!
Thanks for the video!
What's your MacBook specifications and what are the specs you setup the VM? Also, are you using the ARM architecture?
I have an M2 with 8gb of unified memory so I am using the ARM architecture. I'm not sure how to answer the second part of your first question. I just downloaded Parallels and got to work with it, not sure about the specs I set it up with, (though I'd be happy to learn!). Hope that helps a bit!
@@MattMike Hi there. Thanks for the reply! I was using a M1 with 8GB but because of the lack of memory neither my mac and Parallels worked properly. I was curious about how you setup the virtual machine - memory and cores allocated mainly. Now I got a new macbook with M3 Pro and 18GB, so Parallels is running smooth ;) I usually work with a huge volume of data in Power BI, so...
Nice! Glad to hear the M3 is working much better.
Thank you for this! helped so much. Ive now noticed how incredibly slow powerbi is, anyway to manage this?
I've not had this issue, but Parallels can be a battery hog. It may be a performance issue rather than a CPU issue. Perhaps start by checking how many other applications your machine is running while using Parallels?
Thanks Matt. I made sure to like and subscribe to help the channel.
Thank you!
Just a question. Have you tried the UTM application please?
I haven't personally tried UTM, but my understanding is that the setup is more complicated. I like Parallels because it's easy to install and setup.
Yep! Been using it for three years now. But can’t use it for Microsoft SSMS unfortunately. 😢 Do you have any suggestions before I buy a windows pc. 😊
It worked thanks man
Awesome to hear!
Hi! Parallels has several versions of subscriptions, which is the best choice for working with PowerBI? Will the unlimited purchase option suffice or will it be too limited to work with PowerBI?
The standard subscription ($99/yr) works just fine with Power BI.
@MattMike Hey Matt - thanks for the vid. This is the main reason I run Parallels - for PowerBI. Like others have asked - I'm interested in your Mac spec. I have been using Parallels on my Intel based desktop for years (i5, 32Gb memory and a M.2 drive) and performance has always been great. Picked up a new M2 MBP 16Gb, loaded Parallels 19 (tried 18 also) with Win11 & PowerBI and even allocating 12Gb to Parallels, PowerBI is so slow, it is near unusable. Very clean environment (fresh install of everything). So I'm not sure if it's the ARM ver of Windows 11 specifically - I was hoping to see improved performance from the M2 hardware but so far my experience is the opposite. Wish I could jam an extra 16Gb memory in to see if that makes the difference.
I'm using an M2 with 8gb of unified memory. I'll be honest, Power BI does run a bit slow within Parallels at times. I do wish it was faster, but it gets the job done.
I think U're the best!!!
Hi, what is the solution after that the free trial ends ? i need Power BI for my studies and i can't afford the cost
Like I mentioned in the video, I'm not aware of any decent free solutions. However, there is a student plan that is 50% cheaper.
Sell you Mac and buy any Windows Laptop.. Simple
Thanks Matt.
You’re welcome!
I needed this lol
Glad this could help 😉
Hey great video! I was wondering if you have any experience running Excel through Parallels. Probably my last hangup preventing my switch to Mac is how bad Mac Excel is, and I also teach Windows Excel courses so the ability to run Windows Excel reasonably well is an absolute requirement. I'd be going for an M3 Pro if anything
Thanks! To my knowledge, even with Parallels you still can only use the Mac version of Excel. I've tried to figure out workarounds but it still opts for that version of the program. If I figure something out, I can do another video specifically for Excel.
Thank you! I’d love that video, it would be very helpful!
Thanks Matt! I’ve install & run on my Macbook Air M2 8GB RAM. Its too slow to load the Microsoft Power BI & almost impossible to navigate around. Planning on upgrading my Macbook. Do you think 16GB RAM would be enough or i’ll need more like 24GB or 32GB RAM to run smoothly Parallel VM & Microsoft Power BI ?
Update Windows ! Install updates to enable x64 emulsion. I have a MacBook Air M1 with 8GB RAM, and it is working pretty well.
@haktube99 I've heard that the M3's run Parallels much more smoothly than the M2's so it might be worth the upgrade if you've been thinking about upgrading your Macbook anyway. With an M3, I think 16GB should do the trick.
how much ram does your macbook have?
Hi Mike!! I'm from India!
I wanted to know that recently i did an online paid data analyst course from india but as per today's market condition should I choose this field as career, as i am graduating from mechanical engineering
I think it's totally possible! I see people transition into dat from all walks of life. I myself had an English degree and was a teacher prior to entering the field. It may take some time, but it's definitely doable.
@@MattMike I appreciate your reply! But now ai tools like julius ai, raw ai, chatgpt and so on.. are doing data analysis related work so how can i get a job as a fresher in this data analyst field and also in future?
@@sofinagwan4085 AI tools are still so new that many companies haven't yet tapped into their full potential. I wouldn't worry about AI replacing the work of data analysts any time soon. However, I would spend learning the use cases for AI to help set you ahead of the curve in the future.
@@MattMike YOU ARE GREAT Mike!! Thank you so much for your valuable Guidance! 🙏 It's reduced my fear and now I feel very motivated to learn and grow!!
Hi. Could you share parallels settings to use power bi? How much memory does a Mac need to have for comfortable work in Power Bi on the Mac?
Is it possible to connect AtScale to web version of Power BI or is it only possible with Power BI Desktop? I am using Mac.
I do believe the web version of Power BI also supports connection to AtScale.
do you need to buy a windows license to use parallels?
no. u can use the windows without activating it
@WigSplitter122 Nope! As mentioned, all you need is parallels.
hi, how to turn it back to mac again after using it?
Parallels opens up like a browser window. So you have a complete Windows engine running as a “browser” style window. When you’re done using it, you just “X” out of it on the top left corner like you would a normal browser.
Parallels also pauses while you’re not using it so you can minimize it too if you don’t want to completely exit the program.
Can i run Powe.r BI on M3 pro chipset
Yep! www.parallels.com/blogs/apple-m3-chip/
I am using UTM its free and i PowerBI
Did you manage to connect Power BI to SQL Server or MySQL on Parallels?
I have not had to do this, but it should work just fine.
@@MattMike Unfortunately, it doesn't. I'm not sure whether the connectors are available for Windows ARM
Does this work on ARM Mac’s?
Yep!
Sir!! did you intall it without windows
Yes. I did not need a Windows license to download Power BI, but you do need a license if you want to be able to sign-in and publish your reports to a Workspace.
@@MattMike parallel desktop is way better in getting a free powerbi and other apps....than getting a license only for powerbi
gracias, hablo poco inglés y lo entendí perfectamente.
Me alegra mucho escuchar eso!
What is your setup?
My desk setup? Sorry, not sure what you mean.
All thing considered, if you want to use MS applications, its much cheaper to buy a Windows computer.
You've failed to mention that, adding to the Parallels cost, you need to buy a windows licence. Just adding up 😁
Power BI Desktop doesn’t require a license. Publishing and sharing will require licensing.
@@MattMike Windows 11 (or other windows version) require a licence. You need to purchase one, in order to get it running on Parallels, wich by it self needs a licence to. Believe me, i've been there.
bummer(apple means = paid)
Yeah pretty much :(
I don't believe!!! I don't like paralles 😭
😢
Just buy a cheaper windows laptop much more economic and less hassle in the long run
Honestly, not a bad solution. For me, I do prefer the simplicity of one device (and I love my macbook) so running a VM makes sense.
