Shame Return Of The Jedi never got sequels... I really wanted to see full power Jedi Master Luke... I wonder what happened to Han and Leia... maybe they had kids and some of them had the force. Hopefully one day we get to see some sequels. One can hope.
Except that the Star Wars films have always believed and shown that. Most of the characters in Star Wars are not Skywalkers yet they still do heroic or evil things that impact the galaxy just as much as the Skywalkers do.
Yep, but that was because of all the absurds complains about the last jedi. They needed the love of fans instead of being creative, like Rian was. Wich is why I think the fans opinion shouldn't be important
@@alexheisenberg8709 in many ways, a large number of the Star Wars Fandom is full of pretty toxic people, it's really unfortunate. They used to come after George Lucas for years, bashing the prequels. Now that they bullied him out of his own story, many are calling for him to come back, the same people that were destroying him for years. They just couldn't respect the creator, now we are here.
Gawd, this video is so full of plot holes, it hurts. For example, it's never explained why Patrick's mother has an Irish accent. It just doesn't make any sense!
@@klisterklister2367 and that's partly why I liked it but still my point remains. The Star Wars Universe is massive, why are we still hung up on some space priests and their war profiteering
@@gabrielidusogie9189 true! I agree it could be a fun idea, but also a bad one. Good idea because star wars needs some film canon wordbuilding (star trek beats star wars in that) but also bad because it could go so badly... I mean, imagine a whole movie with gangsters like Jabba the hut and that would be so boring. Would be like a feature length movie of the beginning of return of the Jedi. It could be a challenge to make it interesting.
@@klisterklister2367 true. But in my crime Star Wars flick, Jabba the Hutt wouldn't be the focus. Instead you'd create entirely new characters. Picture this. A stormtrooper decides to abandon the Empire after the destruction of the first death star and decides to become a huge ass crime lord.
My favorite critique of the new trilogy is that Kylo Ren is a petulant child that doesn’t measure up to Vader. Congratulations genius, that’s the entire point!
Fernando Giubilei Living in the shadow of your father or ancestors is a fantastic character space to explore, and fear of being a failure is actually a great complex villainous character motivation. Additionally, a person with immense power who is dangerous because of their unhinged lack of control is a fantastic inversion of Vader, who is intimidating because he is always in control. Also Kylo is never presented as the main villain in TFA and only becomes the main villain in TLJ when he kills Snoke, and that’s after he decides that he doesn’t need or want to be Vader. It’s a character growth moment necessary to make him a main villain. He shouldn’t and won’t be TFA Kylo in TROS. Simply put I disagree to the point where I feel like you’re _objectively_ wrong.
@Lt. Colonel Tanya von Degurechaff Rose actually _is_ a bad character. I pity the series for having to include her, I'm sure Kelly does deserve better. Also the mood swings are the point, he's supposed to be unpredictable. That said, *you're right,* a good concept and good execution are two different things, and your mileage may vary on the latter. I'm just saying that if your _critique_ is: "This character is exactly what this character is supposed to be" then you're clearly missing the point entirely. Any criticism about how they can make Kylo more interesting within that character concept is completely founded, and he would have to change quite a bit in order to fill a main villain role in 9, (he's "the Dragon" in 7 and 8, not the big bad), but no more than Luke had to change between Empire and Return. With a time skip they could absolutely reintroduce him as a changed man and a credible final threat, but they'd have to really solidify his motivations, and since more of the fanbase wants to see him redeemed than be the big bad, that wouldn't be received well if we're being honest. Bringing in palpatine feels more like something they need to do to get the fans, who really did not like TLJ, to get invested again, and give them the opportunity to give Kylo a redemption arc (something that I did NOT want to happen, and really can't happen believably without someone as evil as papa palps around.) I just hope the leaks aren't true or Rise is gonna be a train wreck. PS: if Kylo is redeemed and it doesn't involve Anakin's ghost showing up and telling him "finish what I started" and then he kills palpatine, it's going to be the biggest missed opportunity in cinematic history.
@Lt. Colonel Tanya von Degurechaff That's totally fair. I kinda chocked his complete madness during the battle of noth up as a momentary reaction to being rejected, seeing the falcon, and worst of all seeing Luke (The holdo maneuver was also probably not the most uplifting moment to the new supreme leader, I'm sure). Sh** _was_ kind of falling apart at a moment when it should have been win after win for him. I fully expect Kylo to be different at the start of 9 and if he's not it will be a huge failure for his arc and the trilogy as a whole. I also appreciate that TLJ added something for Rey to struggle with, and I'm hoping they don't botch her in TROS, she really needs to come face to face with the dark side and learn that her recklessness, and maybe even her power, are something to be feared, that would make for an interesting struggle for her. Fans are gonna be pissed when she 100% inevitably takes the last name "Skywalker" and is the Skywalker to rise in TROS. I would much prefer to see something with real, world-changing lore implications like a new "Skywalker" order, or her and Ben Solo founding the new Jedi together with the Sith really and truly extinct (like they should have been after Return).
Lt. Colonel Tanya von Degurechaff What’s her struggle? That she’s literally been lying to herself about the fact that she’s a meaningless abandoned child by deluding herself into thinking she’s some meaningful chosen one. We see her with rebel dolls on Jakku, she lights up when the “legends” about Luke and the force are mentioned, she attaches to Han, the first father figure she meets, and expects Luke, the second father figure she meets to fill the same role. She’s terrified of Kylo in TFA, lashes out in anger, is drawn to the dark side with no real restraint. Yes, she can use a lightsaber, but we know that she was already proficient with Melee weapons, what’s the difference between a melee weapon and a lightsaber? It’s not like she fell into a starship at 8 years old, said “wow this is almost like a pod racer” and blew up an entire fleet, or got into an X wing for the first time and survived a dogfight with the greatest pilot in history, who was _also_ a sithlord Jedi Hunter. She’s also not as powerful as Kylo: he’s the one that defeats the majority of the praetorian guard, and he only lost to her in the first place because he’d been shot in the gut with a bowcaster we saw launch people on impact in episode 7. What exactly did Kylo do to earn the power to DEFEAT AND ESCAPE LUKE SKYWALKER back at Luke’s school? Oh that’s right, he’s a Skywalker. Like the protagonist of 1-3 that was literally the force’s Mary Sue, born with more power than Master Yoda, just because. This is Star Wars, it’s a series full of huge-ass Mary Sues, and no-one would have questioned it for a second if she was a Skywalker.
His parents are likely the root cause of his unjustifiable prickishness. Otherwise, why would they allow themselves to be seen on such garbage that would make Oscar the Grouch vomit?
To me, Driver’s delivery of that line makes me think little Ben had to clean it out or had some bad road trips in the Falcon. “Daaaaaadddd why aren’t we at Kashyyyk yet??? I’m BOOOOOORRRRREEEEDDDDD!!!!!”
To be fair, there's a lot of ouch going on. I had so many conversations at work about where you could run to if you picked up the ball from this film, and I don't feel like Ep IX did that at all.

Can I just mention that Finn and Rose free the animals and not the children... the children are clearly slaves... it bothered me quite a bit. They left the kids, because the animals mattered more That’s some first world Bullshit
What? You expected them to take them on the ship with them? That would be putting them in worse danger. Now yes, that is unfortunate that they didn't free them, but they were on the clock. I'm sure they would come back for them after everything is taken care of. I'm sure the Jedi probably would've began taking care of the Hutts and the crime of the Outer Rim after the Clone Wars ended had they not gotten wiped out.
ackbarfan5556 I get that... but they were never concerned about the kids... Rose got so hurt up about the animals... she didn’t even ask the kids if they okay. She didn’t even reassure the kids that they will be back for them. But got a good pat on the back for freeing the animals for a good 5mins. This whole film just felt like first world problems, that’s why no reinforcements came... the whole galaxy is just over it.

I forgot another point, but it is a separate topic anyway. Star Wars fans WANT the saga to go into new and different directions. However, we do not want that growth at the expense of all that has come beforehand. Star Wars is the rare franchise that has gone across multiple decades with multiple films without a reboot, re-imaging, and (for the most part) re-casting. Star Wars isn't like James Bond, super hero movies pre-MCU, or Halloween (which will be re-re-rebooted this October). Instead, Star Wars is like Rocky/Creed, Rambo, and the Harry Potter/Fantastic Beasts sagas. Star Trek, the closest competition to Star Wars, has even been rebooted. And thanks to Disney's CGI magic, we have Star Wars actors reprising their roles despite being DEAD!! So forgive us if we get pissed off when a movie comes along that blatantly breaks the rules of the franchise and progressive storytelling in general all in the name of "subverting expectations" and "moving the franchise forward." A man that has spent years fighting to help and protect his friends and family for years, despite constantly facing near-impossible odds and almost certain death, is NOT going to runaway and hid on an island, just because he had one huge screw up!! A man that believed he could redeem a family member who (A) was the second most evil person in the galaxy and (B) he has no significant relationship with is NOT going to contemplate murdering different family member that man actually has a significant relationship with (both as blood relative and as student/pupil) because the kid MIGHT go evil someday. A commanding officer that has crew that is scared, desperate, and facing imminent destruction has a plan that can save them all AND that officer does not suspect sabotage or a mole, then that officer doesn't try to ease the crew's concerns with philosophical mumbo jumbo. That commanding officer tells the crew the plan, or at the very least she confirms that a plan exists. If a super midi-cholrean Jedi Master that has spent centuries studying the Force needs his full concentration to life a single x-wing out of a swamp, then some Jesse-Come-Lately that has been "studying" the Force for about 52 hours (at best) shouldn't be able to lift dozens of boulders on her first ever try without so much as a damn frown on her face. Wazupwitdat?! That's got noting to do with SJWs and gender politics. That's not me being an angry fanboy that didn't get what he wanted. That's just damn inconsistent storytelling!! Yes, the saga is about space wizards, aliens, faster than light travel, laser swords etc. It is still a saga with rules and history and character arcs and lore. Continuity matters, damn it!! We pissed off fans don't want Star Wars to turn into the Michel Bay Transfomers saga or The Fast & the Furious saga or the Halloween saga or the Terminator saga! We want new. We want difference. We want change. But most of all, we want Star Wars to be Star Wars!!! Continuity and consistency matter, damn it!! >:-(
To BJS999 = Although hindsight is 20/20, there were several ways that Rian Johnson could have brought forth the radical changes and growth that he wanted without breaking and burning the rules and lore of the franchise. Johnson didn't just break the rules of the franchise, he broke the rules of basic progressive story telling. The Rocky/Creed saga is an excellent example of progressive story telling. Creed introduces new characters and elements without destroying the legacy of what came before. Furthermore, I'm not a sore loser. I made a review on my own channel, and I offered a grade of "A with Fanboy Bias". I invite you to watch it.
BJS99 Watch Clone Wars & Rebels. They found ways of moving the franchise forward while respecting the continuity of SW. SW has become too focused on the visual and not enough on continuity, good story, good dialogue & character development. TLJ was cinematic but often makes no sense (consider: why would Rey be first to approach Luke, not Chewie with news of Hans’ death??? Makes NO sense in any universe. Very obvious the writer didn’t care about what makes sense in terms of character or relationship. I have MANY examples where TLJ just is nonsensical & rests on the laurels of being a SW movie- it doesn’t need to make sense, right? As long as it’s a good time? Why spoil the fun with LOGIC?).
@LogiKaiser No he meant dont question nitty logic like it matter. I could go on and on question the science of original movie but i wont because those thing doesnt matter. Gaint worm dont live in empty space. Where the fuck do you think they get their energy if they are that big when there are no sun around and they live in deep dark pitch black of space? "A lot of people don't want new things in their Star Wars" Star Wars Expanded Universe is filled with new things and yet I didn't see much complaints from the fans. Heck, Knights of the Old Republic 2 deconstructs the Force and fans love that game.
I don't even care much about most of the EU (the original Thrawn trilogy aside), and I still want to thumb-up that remark 70 times! The whole existence of beloved fan properties outside the movie canon instantly fails a central thesis in Patrick's argument. You literally could not get more space-wizards-for-children than that. Quality counts. Respect counts even in deconstruction. About the jedi sucks thing..one could argue that George Lucas himself pointed that out on the prequel trilogy. I mean, it's there, it's just not on the nose!
Patrick and many other "fans" like him havent actually seen or absorbed the star wars material that came before 2015. Kotor 1 & 2, the prequels, various books all point out how jedi arent that greatest but with those deconstructions, they each manage to reconstruct a brand new point of view of what jedi are. TLJ just deconstructs with out an explanation. Just goes for the "jedi sucks(mic drop)" moment and walks away.
@@ultimabk except TLJ doesn't just drop the mic. Luke's entire story arc in this film revolves around that. It's really not something merely glossed over.
@@ultimabk Introducing your point by denouncing others who haven't followed the expanded universe (which in terms of the sequels isn't canon anyway; no, I do not like this decision either but I get why they did it because it would have made new movies extremely limited when every characters' story line has already been plotted for 40 years to come) as second-tier fans - which in case of Patrick who at least follows it in form of comics is additionally wrong - already undermindes your whole argument by making it utterly arrogant.
Pat as in the 1st time Luke sees Leia ever is through R2’s projection of her, and the last time Leia sees Luke is through his projection on Crait. It’s a neat detail to me
Leia did not saw Luke as a projection, the first time that she met him. And while Luke, did saw her, while being a projection, this does not equal that she was projection
Luke's final fight was the single most Jedi thing we ever saw in Star Wars - including all non-canon matewrials. He defeated his oponent without actually fighting or landing a hit. And it was glorious.
You do know that Jedi are allowed to fight if it's defending other people right? You can't accomplish anything by just being passive. Even in the film, Luke just delays the enemy but you have to still defeat them so all he did was stall. Any real improvement to the situation requires action and that's why Jedi take action lots of times before this. There is nothing wrong with fighting or even killing so long as you do so for good reasons and only do it to protect people. That's why Jedi carried weapons, they need them to help people. Being a Jedi is not being non-violent. Being a Jedi is using violence only as a last resort.
@@Fionor01 So if a Sith is cutting down a village of innocents, a Jedi shouldn't defend and counterattack? Why even have lightsabers in the first place? Why learn powers such as Force Push, which could potentially be used to harm an individual or Mind Trick, which can cause great mental stress to an individual? Where is it stated that Jedi are strictly pacifists? Why did Obi-wan and Yoda urge Luke to destroy Darth Vader? Jedi are described as keepers of the peace, does that not include using methods of self-defense to maintain the peace and protect the innocent? What's inherently wrong with violence?
I’ve been immersing myself in TTRPG as of late, and I have had the epiphany that Star Wars is more akin to Dungeon and Dragons than it is to a piece of genre fiction like The Lord of the Rings or Dune. Since 1987, when West End Games developed the Star Wars: The Roleplaying Games, Star Wars has ceased to be a film franchise and has become a RPG franchise. This all started with the aforementioned RPG that created source books and rules and such for all things in Star Wars; then those rules were translated into the first major expanded universe media: The Thrawn Trilogy and The Dark Empire Trilogy: the authors literally took the RPG source books and used them to write the novels. Throughout the 1990s, Star Wars was essentially using the same playbook: create toys and games that all fit within the same general RPG playbook and theme (a Stormtrooper is approximately this strong, a Star Destroyer is this large and powerful, etc.). This is probably part of the reason why the prequels are so dull but internally consistent: they were making adaptation of an RPG not a narrative fiction like Dune (where it doesn’t matter how powerful Paul Atreides is as long as his actions fit the narrative). This is most likely why so many old school fans had an issue with the sequel trilogy (outside of the old EU being ignored): Disney did not want to maintain the style and structure of an RPG, they wanted to use a more narrative style of storytelling. With this style, Rey doesn’t have a RPG style character sheet, she can do whatever she needs to progress the story. Now was this a wise approach for Star Wars? Hard to say, but with this context, the last three decades of Star Wars does seem to make much more sense.
@@HermanFalckHow Actually that "space wizard" card is really one of the least compelling argument about SW. It basically means we're not supposed to take anthing seriously about the movie and usually people will use it whenever it's useful and forget about it when they don't need it. GoT is about magic and dragons and zombies in a fantasy world, why shouldn't it be taken seriously, along with its internal consistency? Unless we say we don't care at all about internal consistency but that's a pretty lame rabbit hole to crawl in, there's always a point where everyone will say "come one, that's a little too much to follow, you weren't able to do this a minute ago, now you can because it's useful, the next moment you can't do it anymore, it makes no sense...". The only movies of this kind are like David Lynch movies and not anyone can make them. And you probably can't use that structure for any type of movie.

There are no plotholes in this movie, the use of "plotholes" is a bare excuse of people who didnt like the movie because most people cant really figure out why they dont like it. (they dont understand it)
@LogiKaiser See, iam glad you bring this up because its easy to demonstrate how what you "perceive" as a plothole, is infact no plot hole at all but simply a lack of attention to detail and/or misunderstanding by you. "What about how Holdo hyperspace rams the Imperial fleet when they could have done that at any point earlier in the film with any of the previous ships?" 1) you assume that a hyperspace ram is possible with any ship at any time(this is wrong) 2) While the novelization goes to great lengtht o explain this better than the movie, and i do admit that it isnt super obvious in the movie, there are a number of factors which made this ram a unique one off: - The raddus had experimental new shields (we see shield impacts for the first time in the movies aside from rogue one) that kept the energy of impact concentrated -The supremacy had lateral aligned shields (DJ hacks through one area of them) meaning the shields are vulnerable to a massive concentrated impact -the Raddus, was MASSIVE compared to any other ship the "rebels" had. any shamm ship wouldnt penetrate the shields or do damage -The FO leadership was surprised by the move but recognized that they were planning to hyperspace ram (hux shouts to shoot at the ship immediately)- indicates that ramming is a viable option during star wars battles (rogue one shows ramming too) -The way hyperspace works permitted this to happen based on how the story unfolded.(short story: a ship accelerates to a hyperspace entry point in normal space, up to lightspeed/travel speed, then enters hyperspaces and doesnt interact with objects other than mass shadows) -Holdo enters the hyperspace jump before the supremacy appears but is stopped by leia -the chase ensues and the hyperspace entry points stays stationary while the ships move away from it putting the supremacy between the raddus and the entry point. -(ill ignore safety mechanism for hyperspace because they can be turned off) -when the raddus jumps, it only collides witht he supremacy because the supremacy is between the raddus and its hyperspace entry point and because the jump is pre plotted since the start of the movie it doesnt take long before the raddus can jump, leaving not enough time for counter meassures. to name a few things that you seem to have missed in the movie secondly: "How about Holdo refusing to tell anyone her plan for no reason at all? Her plan was just Leia's plan with specifics and Leia had already told everyone that plan, Holdo's stupidity basically gets everyone killed." 1) you assume that a vice admiral has a responsibility to tell a just demoted captain with attitude anything at all other than where the brig is 2) at this point in time holdo and the leadership DOESNT know how they are being tracked, because poe, finn and rose keep it to themselves - its reasonable to assume a spy on board which feeds the FO the coordinates of the fleet after jump 3) Telling poe about some super secret plan that everything rides on risks that spy overhearing it so why would she tell him. 4) it made no difference: when poe figured out HIMSELF what the plan was he decided to do a half assed rescue attempt that ended up with that very same plan being told to DJ by accident. 5) Poe mutinied after knowing about the plan 6) You assume that there WAS a plan at that time. the original plan was to flee from the first order and jump to hyperspace, when that plan failed they had to come up with a different one. 7) you really just dont like holdo :) 8) poe is who gets everyone killed, if he would have done as he was ordered to do all the resistance members would have escaped. He violated orders to return to the raddus to jump away after completed evacuation, got like 70% of the rebel fights and pilots killed. Then decided to do his own rescue plan which ended up NOT WORKING (finn and rose got caught) and the FO learned about the resistance plan and killed the majority of resistance ships/members 9) poe acted exactly as holdo said, a reckless flyboy who doesnt follow orders because he thinks he knows better. If you want to talk about "realism" as i know TLJ haters like to do, poe would have been in the brig from the point of his outburst on the bridge. Holdo was SUPER lenient on him. Iam sure you got all these things from the movie right? but probably not, because if you did you wouldnt have formed the opinion you did. plot holes are not objective plot holes they are simply missed narrative details that YOU didnt get. :)
I can understand why people don't like it, I can't understand why people think it's literally the worst movie ever made (not even worst Star Wars movie, but worst movie *period*).
You see, I feel like I'm in this weird minority group. I didn't love it, and I didn't dislike it. I enjoy what a lot of people love about it, but I can also see A FEW of the things people complain about... I do believe it does a lot right for the franchise. It introduces new ideas, evolves the new characters in ways I absolutely adore & brings back Luke in the only way I think is interesting. I also think a lot of the humour is totally out of place and borderline cringe-worthy. I didn't feel that the huge Finn & Rose diversion warranted its existence to its fullest degree, and I really feel like the film should have found a way of wrapping up much earlier. Also, Rian introduces the brilliant concept of their being no Sith or Jedi with the idea of Kylo and Rey being the beginning of something completely new, and then completely undoes all of that; reverting back to a more familiar scenario for the third film in the trilogy... The film hovers around a 7/10 for me, but I do admire a lot of what its doing. (though I'd be amongst the first to admit that all this ridiculous amount of hatred towards the film, as well as the people involved, is completely stupid)
Personally, I think most people are going to fall into our way of thinking several years from now. Those that hate will come around to see some of the good things about the movie and the people who love it will come around to see its flaws.
Meerkat Chris The movie introduces something new and "completely undoes all of that"? TLJ is the second installment a trilogy. It served to show us the beginning of the new order, not to have it happen immediately. The fact that you're so impatient means that it was successful at setting up the main drive of the conflict, but second installments never resolve the main conflict. That's for the third act. How is it "completely undone"? Second installments always end with the direst moments of conflict, so that the resolution pays off. Rey taking Kylo's hand immediately would have been badass, but it would not have been as decisive as when she will take his hand in IX when they've both grown in wisdom.
Amazing. Every word you just said.. was right. :) Awesome video, I feel the same way. Hooked from the first battle. Every time I see scenes from this movie I am floored by the cinematography.
@@HenbotI really enjoyed the fight choreography. I know some people saw inconsistencies but it moves so fast and looks so cool and *different* if I bothered to watch it in slow motion it might bother me but I don't feel a need to. Then again, maybe my emotional shock from the scene prior left me too distracted to notice lol. (Jaw on the floor for the entire fight scene.) I can forgive a few visual inconsistencies.
You literally have weapons disappearing from the royal guard's hands in a scene that you can see clearly without slow motion. It was sloppy, and they wave their weapons around like circus clowns, the visual for the scene distracts you from the glaring and sloppy composition and weak choreography because Rian Johnson isnt one who cares about that stuff @@BorgTube47
Patrick, I think you nailed it when you said early on in the vid, "...maybe Star Wars fans don't want anything new, which may be the reason as to why they didn't like it." You're right: they don't (most don't, at least). I share your same beliefs with this movie and I too, thought that SW would last for "decades" as you eloquently put it. But we were both wrong. Aside from the countless backlash-videos I've watched here on RUclips, the hosts would never say as to WHY they hated it. -They just did. When I hear/read that kind of reaction, it makes me think of a mindless mob ruling. Then more people join the mob, because if all of these people hate the movie, well...I guess it's just not a good film! Scary thing is that this way of thinking is implemented in everything these days...including election outcomes. Keep doing what you're doing, Patrick! Peace! :)

I'm not angry... I wasn't coming out of the theater. And I'm glad you liked it. But I'm done caring... I had no investment in this movie. Nothing changed, not much happened, and all the "threats" promised by the Force Awakens was systematically torn away until I could not take anything seriously. Its not that Rey is "too powerful" its that all the villains SUCK!!! and consequently I feel zero investment in the story because I cannot take the bad guys seriously. When the villain is no threat, how am I supposed to care about the Heroes?
I just remember that Tico forcing herself on the Finn character and wasting an hour on a casino planet only to free some animals and not the slave children being pretty bad. Seeing Leia get sucked out into space and start randomly using the force only to save herself was by far the most hysterical thing i've seen people cry at in a theater.

It's nice to watch someone so clearly enjoy something. Personally I thought TLJ was a bad movie (bad writing, bad character motivations, bad plot, just bad everything), but it might be more accurate to say that TLJ was a bad _fit_ for me, and obviously it was a GOOD fit for Patrick. The things he lists at the end that he enjoyed the most were some of the things I enjoyed the least. But I'm happy to see that someone enjoyed it and didn't feel like it was a waste of their time to watch. Patrick's glee is infectious, so I'll just have to settle for enjoying TLJ vicariously.
The worst part about the Last Jedi is that I totally recognize all of the good you mentioned in this video, but I just don’t feel it. LJ leaves me rolling my eyes and feeling empty

they've gotten immensely better films than I did as a child. Episode 1 and 2 are both nonsensical messes of both childish fart humor and bland trade federation drama. What we have now has meaning, themes, and actual performances/direction. I just fail to see what everyone hates so much in these films, they expand the universe

@@Mr100pic The movie was terrible. It looks great, but so does a $50 hooker with an expensive makeover. Still doesn't make it good or even decent. And I'm not even a SW fanatic. But this was boring & a waste of time.
It's funny how people could easily ignore all the things wrong with the OT because of how "it makes them feel" and how those movies "feel like star wars" they also do the same with the Force Awakens, happy to ingest the railroad tracked, color by numbers story because it "feels like star wars" ignoring #PLOTHOLES and the silliness that happens along the way. With the Prequels, they had their faults, and were hated because they didnt "feel" like Star Wars. With the Last Jedi, a movie that simultaneously FEELS like Star Wars and pushes the boundaries of what to expect from a Star wars movie, all of a sudden all of these issues (The Comedy, #PLOTHOLES, etc) are suddenly unforgivable....even though the Original trilogy has many of the very same sins - you just accepted them because you grew up with them and viewed them through a different lens.
The problem with Luke is not that he became a cynical hermit. The problem is that we didn't see him change into a cynical hermit. If you have the time I definitely recommend RUclipsr "The Closer Look"'s video on How to kill a franchise. It's probably my favorite RUclips video period!
Awesome dude! I'm so glad that someone took the time to explain why the many aspects of the movie were excellent-- and your vocabulary was the best and quite original. Thank you for that sir...
Good video. Entertaining to watch. I don't think the movie is good, but I like your analysis of it. Something I always find interesting about TLJ videos is how they're almost always structured around a response to the Star Wars fanbase at large. As someone who wouldn't describe himself as a big Star Wars fan (my favorite piece of Star Wars media is probably the shooter game Republic Commando), I feel like all conversations about the movies are polluted by an underlying need to support or rebut some mainstream opinion. I don't really interact with the Star Wars fanbase, but I have some cultural osmosis understanding of how passionate the fans can be. The credits scene was the bit I agreed with the most: Having a strong opinion on Star Wars movies seems exhausting.
I sincerely feel like Rise of Skywalker didn't have a chance because Last Jedi refuses to function as the second part of a trilogy. Force Awakens works well to establish interesting characters and mysteries, but by the time you get to Rise of Skywalker, it's like, "well, what now? We pretty much have to start from scratch because every personal conflict we set up was resolved in the previous film. Rian left us NOTHING." I largely view Rise of Skywalker's failure as a symptom of one of Last Jedi's many failures.
@@IsaacV24 Well it's just kids movie. I don't see why a grown man would be upset about the direction it took unless he a parent. Maybe he just doesn't know the right way to watch movies or something.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II is one of my favorite video games. It really examines and highlights the many intentional "flaws" and the unintentional flaws baked into the Star Wars universe cake, and reconciles them. It lets you accept them, and think about the flaws not as a detriment to Star Wars or a result of bad writing, but as assets which add depth to the world and are valuable to the Star Wars universe. I mean damn, the entire game is based on Jedi elitism and incompetence, and the greyness of the world. When I watched The Last Jedi (and, upon rewatching, even The Force Awakens to an extent) I was reminded of Knights of the Old Republic. Sure, it wasn't perfect at doing what KotOR II did, but it certainly tried and mostly succeeded, and that's good enough for me. Great even. If a movie can capture even a smidgen of that game's incredible writing and plot, it's a damn good movie. PS: I know SW: KotOR II isn't canon, but that doesn't mean it's loving criticisms of Star Wars are any less valid than they were when the game came out.
I agree that Canto Bight has its purpose in the story but it followed the wrong characters. Rose telling Finn how much the universe sucks makes no sense: he already knows, he's a goddamn child soldier! It should have been Finn opening the hothead Poe's eyes to reality.
I actually respect everything you say here, and I am still EXTREMELY happy to have a Star Wars movie that actually feels like a personal statement, again (which hasn't happened since Lucas). It's inventive and energized, takes risks, and has clunky moments, again....just like Lucas. That said...I still, personally, see this as the "Skywalker Saga," and I kind of feel like the idea of "moving on" from the Skywalkers wasn't suited for the penultimate chapter of their story. If all of this had happened in Johnson's stand-alone trilogy, I would be standing and cheering. I also feel like (and it's basically been confirmed) there's no story oversight going on here. This trilogy does not feel like a unified narrative, and that bugs me. So, I have mixed feelings...and I don't think that will go away.
Pretty compact comment (for my standards) packed with everything I feel, thanks! :-) There were gorgeous things happening there and Johnson gets pissed upon way too much. But when it comes to being integrated in the trilogy and the bigger story I can't follow it. For me it felt like they wanted everything: something brand new but bringing back the old characters... Sometimes if you want to do too many things you end up doing nothing really well.
I love this movie. I agree with pretty much everything Patrick said in his video. Your point about the trilogy not feeling like a unified narrative is a perspective I have not heard before, but I definitely agree with.
To be fair, we still have a movie to go, and JJ said in a recent interview that he feel he has managed to connect not only the previous 2 films, but all the trilogies as well. So who knows, maybe this time next year we will see how this movie fits together with the overall narrative, and not just it's own (amazing) thing.

My favorite critique of the new trilogy is that Kylo Ren is a petulant child that doesn’t measure up to Vader.
Congratulations genius, that’s the entire point!
But that's not a compelling point or an engaging villain, not as the main villain at least.
Fernando Giubilei
Living in the shadow of your father or ancestors is a fantastic character space to explore, and fear of being a failure is actually a great complex villainous character motivation.
@Lt. Colonel Tanya von Degurechaff
Rose actually _is_ a bad character.
Bringing in palpatine feels more like something they need to do to get the fans, who really did not like TLJ, to get invested again, and give them the opportunity to give Kylo a redemption arc (something that I did NOT want to happen, and really can't happen believably without someone as evil as papa palps around.)
I just hope the leaks aren't true or Rise is gonna be a train wreck.
PS: if Kylo is redeemed and it doesn't involve Anakin's ghost showing up and telling him "finish what I started" and then he kills palpatine, it's going to be the biggest missed opportunity in cinematic history.
@Lt. Colonel Tanya von Degurechaff
That's totally fair.
Lt. Colonel Tanya von Degurechaff
What’s her struggle?

@@longarmsgiraffe0955 he wouldn't have, because guess what? A lot of people would've used one of his arguments against him: "It's a Space movie intended for children", just like what happened in his Tweet when he said "How focking dare you JJ?"
So forgive us if we get pissed off when a movie comes along that blatantly breaks the rules of the franchise and progressive storytelling in general all in the name of "subverting expectations" and "moving the franchise forward."
A man that has spent years fighting to help and protect his friends and family for years, despite constantly facing near-impossible odds and almost certain death, is NOT going to runaway and hid on an island, just because he had one huge screw up!!
High Heel Knight TFA and TLJ are new and different! They have change! It is Star Wars! You're just a sore loser!

Watch Clone Wars & Rebels.

"A lot of people don't want new things in their Star Wars." -- Amendment for accuracy: a lot of people don't want new crappy things in their Star Wars. I've seen exactly zero people complaining about 'new things' per se. (Also aside from disconnected oddities and super-conveniences in Paige Tico's story, I can't recall anyone who hates the movie also hating her character and her scenes per se. I agree her scenes are legitimately good, at least in principle if oddly shoddy in execution.)
"A lot of people don't want new things in their Star Wars"
Star Wars Expanded Universe is filled with new things and yet I didn't see much complaints from the fans.
Heck, Knights of the Old Republic 2 deconstructs the Force and fans love that game.
Exactly. No one's complaining about there being new stuff; they're complaining about the (in Snoke's case quite literal) execution of that new stuff.
I don't even care much about most of the EU (the original Thrawn trilogy aside), and I still want to thumb-up that remark 70 times! The whole existence of beloved fan properties outside the movie canon instantly fails a central thesis in Patrick's argument. FOR GOD'S SAKE THERE'S A GREEN RABBIT SIDEKICK TO HAN SOLO, generally beloved by fans (along with most of the classic Marvel Star Wars material). You literally could not get more space-wizards-for-children than that.
Quality counts. Respect counts even in deconstruction. Come to think of it, Thrawn's original story deconstructs quite a bit of the original trilogy story, in an entertaining, clever way that still respects the prior material. (I know nothing about the new Thrawn material.)

Lukes character arc was my favorite part of the last Jedi, it t rang very true to me as someone that has experienced my own fall from grace and personal tragedy. It was a natural and realistic path for him, and I loved it.
Yes, the man who saw the good in Darth fucking Vader, child murdering, jedi slaughtering, all around evil sith lord, somehow turns around and tries to kill his flesh and blood nephew after seeing that he MIGHT turn to the dark side. And he never got to observe the Jedi in their prime, only learning the bare minimum from the lone two survivors whom he also learned were lying to him.

Missed that too
Pat as in the 1st time Luke sees Leia ever is through R2’s projection of her, and the last time Leia sees Luke is through his projection on Crait.
@@Obi-Wan_Kenobi Thats sounds a lot like Jedi propaganda. Exactly the kind Luke dismissed as flawed, because it perpetuates cycle of violence.
@@Lexxyn that’s not what they are saying idiot
I did not like the movie but you make some convincing arguments for its merits and I actually agree with you on some points. Good video.

"What about how Holdo hyperspace rams the Imperial fleet when they could have done that at any point earlier in the film with any of the previous ships?"
1) you assume that a hyperspace ram is possible with any ship at any time(this is wrong)
2) While the novelization goes to great lengtht o explain this better than the movie, and i do admit that it isnt super obvious in the movie, there are a number of factors which made this ram a unique one off:
- The raddus had experimental new shields (we see shield impacts for the first time in the movies aside from rogue one) that kept the energy of impact concentrated
-The supremacy had lateral aligned shields (DJ hacks through one area of them) meaning the shields are vulnerable to a massive concentrated impact
-the Raddus, was MASSIVE compared to any other ship the "rebels" had. any shamm ship wouldnt penetrate the shields or do damage
-The FO leadership was surprised by the move but recognized that they were planning to hyperspace ram (hux shouts to shoot at the ship immediately)- indicates that ramming is a viable option during star wars battles (rogue one shows ramming too)
-The way hyperspace works permitted this to happen based on how the story unfolded.(short story: a ship accelerates to a hyperspace entry point in normal space, up to lightspeed/travel speed, then enters hyperspaces and doesnt interact with objects other than mass shadows)
-Holdo enters the hyperspace jump before the supremacy appears but is stopped by leia
-the chase ensues and the hyperspace entry points stays stationary while the ships move away from it putting the supremacy between the raddus and the entry point.
-(ill ignore safety mechanism for hyperspace because they can be turned off)
-when the raddus jumps, it only collides witht he supremacy because the supremacy is between the raddus and its hyperspace entry point and because the jump is pre plotted since the start of the movie it doesnt take long before the raddus can jump, leaving not enough time for counter meassures.
to name a few things that you seem to have missed in the movie
secondly:
"How about Holdo refusing to tell anyone her plan for no reason at all? Her plan was just Leia's plan with specifics and Leia had already told everyone that plan, Holdo's stupidity basically gets everyone killed."
1) you assume that a vice admiral has a responsibility to tell a just demoted captain with attitude anything at all other than where the brig is
2) at this point in time holdo and the leadership DOESNT know how they are being tracked, because poe, finn and rose keep it to themselves - its reasonable to assume a spy on board which feeds the FO the coordinates of the fleet after jump
3) Telling poe about some super secret plan that everything rides on risks that spy overhearing it so why would she tell him.
4) it made no difference: when poe figured out HIMSELF what the plan was he decided to do a half assed rescue attempt that ended up with that very same plan being told to DJ by accident.
5) Poe mutinied after knowing about the plan
6) You assume that there WAS a plan at that time. the original plan was to flee from the first order and jump to hyperspace, when that plan failed they had to come up with a different one.
7) you really just dont like holdo :)
8) poe is who gets everyone killed, if he would have done as he was ordered to do all the resistance members would have escaped. He violated orders to return to the raddus to jump away after completed evacuation, got like 70% of the rebel fights and pilots killed. Then decided to do his own rescue plan which ended up NOT WORKING (finn and rose got caught) and the FO learned about the resistance plan and killed the majority of resistance ships/members
9) poe acted exactly as holdo said, a reckless flyboy who doesnt follow orders because he thinks he knows better.
For me this movie is right in the middle, although it made many things that I did not like and a few I did.
Totally agree
Amazing. Every word you just said.. was right. :)

Its not that Rey is "too powerful" its that all the villains SUCK!!! and consequently I feel zero investment in the story because I cannot take the bad guys seriously. When the villain is no threat, how am I supposed to care about the Heroes?
that's right, the people who liked the ST and TLJ specifically seem on par with brainless morons
The story isn't about any of that. It's about the conflict between Rey & Ben/Kylo and the bond that they share.
Patrick Willems: 2:07
Also Patrick Willems: JJ Abrams how fucking dare you
He did do that didnt he :) poetic.
I am as upset about “Jedi, Shmedi” being cut as I am of the scene of Luke mourning his best friend Han
6:38 WHY 😂😂😂😭😭😭😭
Patrick: "This is a movie about Space Wizards Intended for Children"
(~1 year later...)
Patrick: "JJAbrams how f..king dare you"
Congratulations, you played yourself.
Episode 7 did not bridge the 30 year gap it just completely jumped to the other side. It’s just like oh ya the Luke who was so wise last time we saw him failed and jedi are all dead again the empire’s basically back and everything accomplished at the end of episode 6 is gone
I really really really really really really really really really really really really really want a Mr and Mrs Willems episode where they watch a movie and explain to you why they love it.
I am so tired of getting bullied just for liking a star wars movie
Which one?
Don’t forget about the heart of the movie - the epic Snoke room battle where Kylo is echoing Rian Johnson screaming at Disney “let’s move on from that same old story! Let’s do something new!!!”
That’s Genius. Because we already know what was Dieney’s reply…
Something broke in you a long time ago
kingvmr w... what?
I really enjoyed the movie, and my friend felt like you when he watched, so I showed his a playlist with amazing videos to try to explain some of the themes in the movie.

Hope you enjoy it
reminder that if you haven’t seen Brick by this director please watch it it is such a sleeper hit
This has aged like fine wine hasn’t it?
"everyone is related to someone we already knew" i died when i heard that. JESUS
Watching this after the last few years of the Star Wars galaxy getting smaller and more and more interconnected is really sad.
8:42 so Luke is like Martin Luther, if Martin Luther moped in a cave away from humanity and mumbled his catechism to a space cow.
i do wonder how much more i'd enjoy star wars if it weren't for other star wars fans
I'm so glad someone gets it... it might be my all time favorite Star Wars movie
I dunno, you describe the movie it was trying to be, not exactly what I feel we got. Thanks for this vid tho.
He literally described what we got lol
@@jukaa1012 No he literally didn't.
Eagle Bearer Yes, he literally did.
No, that's exactly what we got. The difference is that when you watched, you didn't like it (and that's perfectly fine by the way) and in this case, you are seeing a guy talking about how much he liked the movie
"It's for kids" isn't a valid counterpoint bro
Say that to George Lucas. Even he said that Star Wars was for 12 year olds
Star Wars is for kids.
Children's media can be well-written and coherent. It's simply another demographic, and kids dont deserve less.
they've gotten immensely better films than I did as a child. Episode 1 and 2 are both nonsensical messes of both childish fart humor and bland trade federation drama. What we have now has meaning, themes, and actual performances/direction. I just fail to see what everyone hates so much in these films, they expand the universe
@@RevolverOcelotable Too bad the meaning, themes and story are objectively shit, in all three of the new trilogy.
6:28 That, my friend, is a Devaronian
I loved it...I get why people hated it, but I loved it.
5:48 guiding a HERO to redeem his father and convince him to over throw the dark emperor of the universe not good enough for you? ... but, oh, blowing up a tree finally drives that home. Welcome to Star Wars, bubba.
Sometimes change comes when people aren't ready. Hardcore Star Wars fans just weren't ready for TLJ.
You're right, I totally wasn't ready for this abomination of a film.
Damn Kord you are actually so right. It’s amazing how fast it went from being “here is my opinion of the movie (good or bad)” to “here is my opinion of those who disagree with me about the movie”... People got hostile on both ends of the debate.
@@Mr100pic
The movie was terrible. It looks great, but so does a $50 hooker with an expensive makeover. Still doesn't make it good or even decent. And I'm not even a SW fanatic. But this was boring & a waste of time.
I love it too. 👍
(R.I.P. Porkins. 😥)
I loved everything about this video.
My friend, these people will never listen to logic , don’t bother
Awesome dude! I'm so glad that someone took the time to explain why the many aspects of the movie were excellent-- and your vocabulary was the best and quite original. Thank you for that sir...
"The giant alien cow thing that luke milks is one of my favourite additions to this whole series"
Jesus dude, what is wrong with you.
Compulsive hackery. That’s what’s wrong with him.
Carrie Fisher death was the final nail in the coffin even before writing the script
Waiting for you “The Rise of Skywalker” review
He's not making one. Probably because he'd have to admit all the stuff he said in this video was bullshit.
PhilDisaster or because he did not like the direction it took.
@@DisplayThisOkay You mean JJ Abrams ruining all the good stuff setup for 9?
@@connor3198 there was no setup from the previous movie to begin with
@@IsaacV24 Well it's just kids movie. I don't see why a grown man would be upset about the direction it took unless he a parent. Maybe he just doesn't know the right way to watch movies or something.
Great video.
Brave, but foolish, my old Jedi friend.
Oof stay away from these comments bois!
You are not who you say you’re - you are who others say you’re. And that’s why so many hate this movie- this is my favorite Star Wars Movie
I'm obsessed with the new trilogy, NGL. I've seen them both at least 10 times each. I'm literally planning on watching tlj again after this video.
Come at me
I will come at you
With a polite handshake
Thank you sir
Thoughts on Rise of Skywalker?
Patrick: Uh, I would be worried if everyone across the board was like "Yeah, that was a good video". It's much more exciting to me when there are some comments saying "I agree with everything you said" and then there are others that say "That was the dumbest video I've ever seen". Having those two extremes is the mark of the type of video I want to make, so-" (side nod and smirk)

OP: clever girl.....
KOTOR and KOTOR II are still the best stories ever told in the Star Wars universe.
Those games are how you do subversion right while expanding on the mythos
Please someone tells Patrick's parents I've watched this video more than once.
YUCK
Patrick has got to stop drinking T E A!
I agree that Canto Bight has its purpose in the story but it followed the wrong characters. Rose telling Finn how much the universe sucks makes no sense: he already knows, he's a goddamn child soldier! It should have been Finn opening the hothead Poe's eyes to reality.
Your parents = Adorable.
Trust me. I'm a mathematician.
It’s nice to listen to different opinions.
Unless you are watching this smug rat.
Yes! Last Jedi is my favourite Star Wars film and you nailed why in so many ways in your video, thankyouverymuch!!
I'm laughing at the aging of this clip.
It aged like green milk.
It aged well actually
@@blueprint7 "this movie shows you don't have to be part of a special bloodline" lol whoops next movie says otherwise
me2, the flaws in Patrick's assessment of TLJ and the ST as a whole are hilariously terrible, as are the films themselves - and especially TLJ
@@ontrakmerchantservices9984 You abbreviated The Rise of Skywalker wrong ;-)
@@bogzbiny Abrams may well pull it off, but...this would've been much easier if they'd fleshed out what the endpoint of the trilogy so that evrryone knew what they were aiming for.
mpjedi2 to be fair.....the original trilogy was done in roughly the same fashion. There was just no internet echo chamber to hot-take it into oblivion between each episode.
I love the prequels, but your opinion and I respect it
Now do Season 8 of Game of Thrones
He'll probably love it.
