Oh no, you don't have a $1500 Festool Domino joiner? But how will I, average Joe RUclips watcher, know that you're a serious professional woodworker? No man, great job. Simple explanations and good videography.
@@JohnBuildsIt Dowels are perfectly fine just maybe a little more work but not that much. When I was hobby woodworking years back I ended up buying so many unnecessary expensive tools that I used only a few times or not at all. I had a mortising machine I paid nearly a thousand dollars for that I ended up selling to someone on Facebook for half that price. It was still brand new in the box. Whenever I needed to mortise something I just did it by hand and it was fine. And I enjoyed the process of doing it by hand too even if it took that much longer to do.
Great build. I appreciate no corny outtakes. Just imagine you were able to build without festool and sponsorship. Great job, thanks for sharing. Nice shop setup .
Another great video! I really appreciate your channel…you make awesome stuff without all the ads and other garbage. The other thing I appreciate is that you actually BUILD stuff. So many other RUclipsrs don’t build anything anymore…just pitch products or the same “tips” that everyone else has done a video for too. Your channel is pure quality. Thanks!
I was wishing I had a nice jointer like you…and a planer. 😅 thank you for sharing. I am making a crib for a grand baby and you’re giving me lots of ideas. I’ll also make a matching chest
Another great video and awesome build. I just read a comment from someone saying they are glad you actually build things in your videos. I feel the same way. Thank you! I am appreciative of the dowling method you use. Pocket holes are okay in their proper place, and not everyone can afford (or wants) a Festool Domino Joiner. Thanks again.
Someone told me about your channel a while ago but I mixed your channel with another one and basically just started watching. I’m loving your builds. A good binge watch is in my future.
Another great build job. I'd be very interested in a workshop tour. Esp those Milwaukee tool boxes at 2:07 and what you think of them and how you kitted them out.
I'm just finishing up the dresser from your plans (thought I made a couple small changes). Need to ask if he wants a toy box to match, or if he still wants a big boy bed to match his dresser.
@@JohnBuildsIt finally done with the dresser. It’s kind of a combo of the dresser build for your daughter and the one for your son. 3 smaller drawers on top then two and two middle and bottom done in red oak. Is emailed you a pic
I browsed the internet high and low for a build exactly like this a few months ago and couldnt find it. I ended up throwing my own plan together but definetly wish I would have seen this first for a few changes. Very similar to what I did tho.
@JohnBuildsIt - since it's been a bit, did you ever need to add platens to prevent cupping for the top? It seems awfully wide and like it would be easy for it to warp over time.
It’s a hard wax oil finish so it’s easier to apply and touch up/refinish if needed. I like all the colors they offer too and just personally like the satin sheen and feel versus a film finish like poly. Durable too, everything I’ve used it on still looks flawless. They have cheaper sample you can get to try some out!
what was that you spread over the top and sides then buffed off, grain filler? Looked like that little clear screw or drill guide for the hinges gives you an overhang, how much do you have across the front and back??
I'm looking at using those hinges soon. The back of the chest is flush with the outside of the legs, is that because the hinges wouldn't work with a set-back/reveal on the back? If so I'll have to see about a bevel or something to allow the top to open. Looks great, John.
They would with a little bit, like a 1/2”, but not centered on this size of legs like the other 3 sides. So went ahead and just flushed it to the back to make the inside of the box bigger since you can’t really see it anyway
@@sc67jam trying to think, check out the window cornice box video on my channel. Those were pretty wide beveled cuts and show how good they came out. It’s really solid 👍🏽
Seeing your baby, a video about good solid wood furniture with a lid that is heavy, had me hoping you built in a safety measure to save their fingers. :/
I truly love the idea, but comparing mass production price companies, which are extremely cheap makes it hard to find project where the wood is cheaper, i personally every time i come across piles of wood in excellent shape for free, i take them home.
Is this video actually for carpetners who have personal factory at home? All those machines i dont even know names,tables,tools..i taught there are videos for ordinary people who want to make "simple, easy" project..🤔😒

Good Job
Thanks!
Tip: Cut copes first, profile removes tearout, otherwise you need a reverse backer board for 1/2 of them 👍🏻. Good job.
Backer board built in on the coping sled so no tear out regardless 👍🏽
Love it
The jig that was used to cut the tongue. Would you car to share how it was made
I didn’t make it. Link for it is in the video description 👍🏽

Will this work for outdoor patio storage?
Great job. May I ask where you get your torsion hinges?
Rockler

Ah bummer! Thanks for watching though man!
Hi, Great video! I just bought your plans for this toy box. Can you tell me what hinges you used from Rockler please? Thanks
I used the 60lb
Do you need a pretty heavy duty router to run those tongue and groove bits?
Excellent work on this, it looks great!
I use the Bosch 2.25hp. Great router
@JohnBuildsIt - since it's been a bit, did you ever need to add platens to prevent cupping for the top? It seems awfully wide and like it would be easy for it to warp over time.
No I didn’t, still flat!
What do you have under the boards in the start of vid when you begin cutting and cleaning up the rough stock that keeps you from cutting your table?
Foam insulation
John, I’ve seen a lot about Rubio monocoat. What makes so much better than a poly or oil finish?
It’s a hard wax oil finish so it’s easier to apply and touch up/refinish if needed. Yea I did
what was that you spread over the top and sides then buffed off, grain filler? Looked like that little clear screw or drill guide for the hinges gives you an overhang, how much do you have across the front and back??
It’s Rubio monocoat. There are 2 locations on that jig for the hinges, flush or with an overhang
@@JohnBuildsIt because you replied, thank you much, i have subscribed to your channel...I do like your project
Did you have any concern of the top warping overtime with no cross braces?
Always a risk, but no problems with this one
Didn't see what hinges you were using in tools/products used can you help out. Them the $70 pr on Amazon?
Rockler Torsion hinges. Much cheaper straight from rockler I believe
Your video says you used the shaker router bit but your plans show a tongue and groove cut. The 1/2” panels don’t fit in the shaker joinery
There’s a rabbet cut on the panels, it’s in the plans 👍🏽

How long did this project take? Very nice
3 days with giving glueups time to dry
What oil stain did u use?
It’s Rubio monocoat
What thickness did you plane the panels down to?
These are 1/2”
That what I was thinking. Thanks for the reply, and, as usual, great build!
Very nice…..curious about the total cost of materials….?
I had about 350-400 in them. Those hinges I used are pretty expensive though
John, how do you like the Delta Cruzer miter saw?
Throws dust like crazy, probably the worst out of all the saws I’ve used haha, but other than that’s it’s been really great!
@@JohnBuildsIt is there deflection when fully extended? Would be great if you could do a video on it. Keep up the great work, thanks!!

It’s sitting in the shop ready to put together this week actually! Haha
