For folks wobble issues: Get PID Balance squared and then just keep raising PD Gain slider till it trills and back it off. You will be AMAZED at how many issues evaporate!; along with prop wash. It is not a "firmware issue". BF 4.2 has not had any problem. Tune your stuff folks. It is easier than ever with sliders. Defaults are defaults and presets are not ideal either. TIP: Set i-Term cutoff Relax to 10 to tune PD Balance and move FF slider all the way to the left.
Dude you may have just helped me fix a problem. I dunno what is going on but with one of my builds when I hold a straight line and track in a line I am getting some wobble. Not really low throttle bobble because I'm not going low throttle, just holding stick position. But GOD I'm so bad at tuning.
I think it's really cool you did this. I have primarily 6s quads and have wondered about flying 4s on them. Thank you for being willing to experiment and passing on what you learned. You rock sir.
Bardwell, your flying has gotten so much more creative! Haven't watched you rip your yard in a while, and those 3 packs a day have really made a difference.. thanks man!
Honestly though. I got the 6s version of the Nazgul 5 with 1800kv motors and have been achieving around 6-10mins + of flight time with 1500mah 4s depending on if i am just cruising around vs higher throttle maneuvers like punch outs over trees and buildings etc. Ill set up a different tune when i buy some 6s packs and keep the 4s tune on hand for a split tuned quad.
I fly 4S and 1700/1800KV on my quads, short range. Lots of torque, more resolution on throttle, and I usually expect 7 minutes of decent freestyle flying per pack. Only major problem that should be known is that the voltage sag is very noticeable when running low. When the battery is down in the 14V range, 1700KV is hard to drive which forces you to punch the throttle more, dropping your voltage even more. Very noticeable diminishing returns. Glad you made this video - so little content on tuning low KV 4S builds.
Yup - keep builds light and you can push that out even farther. BF4.2 does a great job with the VBAT_Sag_compensation on masking that effect, but then it becomes more like 6S that when you're done, you're done... athough that's after 6-8 minutes on my light setups
Back when I start with FPV I did the same thing, flew with 6s rated copter using 4s batt then switched to 6s after I was confident enough managing my throttle.
You must have been reading my mail. I have been asking this exact question for a couple weeks: can I buy a 6s cidora and run it on 4s as I am learning. I finally got a response from flo-rida fpv "yes, longer flights and easier handling". Thanks for the confirmation. That sucka was screaming on 4s. Love it. Thanks
Hey man, thanks for all of these great videos. I'm brand new to FPV, in fact, still waiting for parts from BG to build my first FPV. I've gone for a Geyser build as what brought me here is the ability to get video footage. I have a few line of sight toy quads and a Mavic Mini, but needed something more involved. Boy did I find it. I've watched so many of your videos to wrap my head around this and now feel like I've got a pretty firm grasp on things. I owe you many thanks, and you can expect my support for all of your hard work. Cheers, and keep it up.
By coincidence, just last weekend I had some fully charged 4S batteries that I needed to drain, so I flew them on my 6S quad. The pids were off and it wasn't as peppy, but it flew well for tight precision maneuvers. So much fun - there's definitely a place for this!
4.2 has made it easier to tune for using different battery cell counts. Before he changed from 6s to 4s, he needed to select his cell count under the pids settings. Save it then choose profile 2 and tune the pids there and select the cell count and save. Then when ever you plug a battery in it knows to use the right pid setting per your cell count. Joshua, your flying has improved greatly!!! Just imagine if you where able to fly the exact same quad during your 3 packs a day experiment!!!! It also helps to fly the same place, wish I had your property to fly on all the time. Keep doing what your doing, also wish I could do your job, purely jealous!!! Fly hard and crash easy!
I highly recommend trying 4S on a 6S setup. The throttle control is massive. I even run that on race rigs. When I’m needing finess on a track and not just raw point and shoot power. It’s much easier on your equipment too.
I found that my pids and filters from 4.1 work pretty damn good on 4.2. Its the stick feel that presents a bit of a challenge. But not enough to make me flash backwards.
Thank you! I am still 3S on a 6S supported 7" Quad, LOS (Acro) for teaching students to fly Quads and fly their (safety) license... I definitely learned something today (again!) Thank U !
I honestly love these kind of videos. sometimes troubleshooting is the most informative (I'm trying to get my quad to fly well, but it's still unstable lol)
Been flying 4s xing 1800kv for about 5 months and then i went to F40 pro 2400kv meant for 4s and then tuned it and it made a world of difference in my skill level. I'm in the works of building a 6s 1800kv for more fun, 4s is definitely a good learning point but use the right motor's.
As far as good generic ways to fix the tendencies of freestyle quads with underpowered setups to have bobbles: iTermRelax = 10 on Setpoint, set dMinGain=45 and deMinAdvance=100 (lots more effective D gain without having to run high default D gains), and thrust_linear=25 does a really great job of managing most of those root causes for bobbles. You still want to set P/D ratios and then step the P&D Gains up to where you're a click below the mid-turn trilling sounds for a really tight tune, but the above really helps keep that point stay reasonable and not require much ore than 1.2 on the PD Balance slider.
These settings also let you run some really high FF gains without getting too much overshoot - in terms of getting more stick immediacy, this is the quickest way to get a super-sharp stick feel without getting hot motors or oscillation amplification tendencies.
Great flight at the end there. When you have bounce back on pitch it’s worth checking your battery position. Black box to the rescue here, but if you find that one pair of motors (rear or front) is working harder than the other I term windup will result and you’ll then get a bounce on a flip.
Feedforaward transition won't help with bounce back. It only scales FF away from center. It's there to help dampen small movements and the jump that happens from spring tention across center stick.
I'm new to the addiction. Only been flying for a short time. That was a really good freestyle flow. @Joshua Bardwell you should have some sort of Liftoff competition for your property, and have the winner come fly with you!

I've been flying 6 and 4s on my 1700kv Rooster for over 2 years now. Depends on how I feel like flying that day. 6s= more power, 4s more docile. A little longer flight time with a smaller 6s than a larger 4s, but It does great. I don't change the pids either. Slap whatever battery on and rip! Also fly both on my 2600kv Rig too😁

On 6s 1750, 4.2 Cinematic with RPM filter it felt great, except for prop wash - which gets exponentially worse if I let it just settle into it at low throttle. Wow!!! Awesome content and I think the flying in here does prove that flying 3 packs a day can make you a better pilot 😁. Thank you for all that you do brother.
Now we know Mr Bardwell likes breaking Benjamin. Good choice of music by the way
Nice flying... 3 packs a day really helps with muscle memory... awesome song... 😉👍💯... this video is your best flying yet... especially 4s on 6s quad... 😊 it’s going to be hard to outfly yourself...
I'm loving your videos! Shout out from South Africa. And that's a sick song. 🤙
