    If you know anything about fashion, you should’ve heard of Azzedine Alaïa. Whether it’s the ‘Clueless’ movie reference or his famously endearing nickname ‘papa’ dubbed by Naomi Campbell, Alaïa is a bonafide household name in luxury fashion.
    Azzedine Alaïa was born in Tunisia, a small country at the northernmost tip of Africa. He was raised with a twin sister who he later cited as his inspiration for loving the craftsmanship of couture. Alaïa started his career as an apprentice, as a young aspiring designer does, eventually taking his talents to Paris to work for the likes of Guy Laroche, Christian Dior, and Thierry Mugler. In the late 1970s, he opened his first Parisian atelier.
    Alaïa’s first ready-to-wear collection launched in 1980 to rave reviews from prominent fashion writers and editors. Coincidentally, that same year, it was an Alaïa coat worn by an interior designer in New York that caught the attention of a Bergdorf Goodman buyer, and the rest, as they say, is history.
    Alaïa’s career really blossomed in the 80s, years before Gianni Versace is credited for ushering in the supermodel era of the 90s. Alaïa shows featured high profile names like Stephanie Seymour, Veronica Webb, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, and Eva Herzigova, some of whom would reportedly cancel other shows to walk Alaïa’s runway.
    Crowned the “King of Cling”, Alaïa crafted a specialized stretch-knit aesthetic that became infamous for the body-con silhouette. Bandage dress, cage-like cutouts, and sleek catsuits became Alaïa's signature, even before the likes of Herve Leger. In his Fall 1991 collection, he sends gazelles down the runway in animal intarsia knitwear, ranging from coats and turtlenecks to dresses and catsuits. According to the designer himself, the structure and design of his clothes were meant to give women "that lightness" and a sense of freedom.
    I've seen Yasmeen Ghauri and Naomi Campbell walk back to back in short clips from this runway show, but seeing it in flow on the runway was EVERYTHING. The fact that these two powerhouse supermodels are practically wearing the same thing, but each walk delivers a different kind of flavor that you didn't know you were missing the whole time!
    Are there any more Alaïa runway shows I need to react to? What are your thoughts on this collection? Let me know in the comments!

    No one can doubt Naomi's talent as a model. But while she has behaved more than pitifully on countless occasions, Yasmeen has always behaved like a true lady. The entire industry always praised her extraordinary seriousness and professionalism.
    She never made a fuss, never insulted or mistreated anyone and never behaved like a diva, as Naomi did on so, so many occasions. So I'll stick with Yasmeen...

    • @MalcolmSoaries
      @MalcolmSoaries  3 месяца назад +3

      Naomi definitely developed a reputation. Since Yasmeen retired much earlier, I will say that’s it been nice seeing Naomi remain in the spotlight and evolve her professional image far away from those chaotic episodes from many years ago. She’s certainly not perfect, but she’s actually made great strides in rehabilitating that negative perception of her in the workplace. But Yasmeen was always a class act and deserves the admiration for it for sure!

    Hello, now you're talking about 1 of my favorites (who I met,1 week, then the next Gaultier). Alaia was original trained to be a sculpture, and it is evident in his work. He is a master tailor. He draped his garments and was precise in everything he designed. This show and the ones prior to this will show Alaia was actually the designer, not Versace, who created the supermodels strut on the catwalk. The models , and I mean all the models who were hot, did his shows , sometimes for free. A lot of them were paid in clothes, which kind of says a lot about his designs, and models who have the opportunity to wear everything from other designers, to covet his creations. There are 2 great books on Alaia that I recommend, Alaia, Afore, Alaia, and Azzedine Alaia/Arthur Elgort/Freedom.

    • @MalcolmSoaries
      @MalcolmSoaries  5 месяцев назад +1

      Wow!!!! Thank you for sharing this! I read that a lot of models would cancel other shows to walk for him, and yes he was the real inventor of the supermodel before Gianni! Incredible.
