  • Part 3 of our Caravan Renovation series deals with how, as an afterthought, we created an extension to our verandah to form a deck around a firepit and including the use of Shou Sugi Ban, a Japanese method of preserving timber.

Actually, this is very good video for those who want to do some project like this. Camera work and editing is also top class :) I'm living myself in Scotland and have similar caravan to do up. Your videos helped a lot. Im at the stage to replace to double glaze windows first, then going to build similar frame around. Thanks.

Ive seen blackened wood before -ncould you leave the wood black rather than brushing the carbon off?

Well as I mentioned I'm learning about Shou sugi ban as I go but my thoughts are firstly that if you leave the black on you can't apply the oil, or at least if you did it would just mix with the black dust and make a sludge. Secondly the black on there is very dusty so I would imagine it would wash off in time anyway. I think if you burn it even harder than I did then you can achieve a darker colour even after brushing but having not done that I can't be certain. I still have some more to do so I will experiment and let you know. Cheers for watching.

Fantastic to see the finished caravan. Did you use sheep wool insulation behind the cladding to? Also great to see your videos back, been following them. Hope you both well

@@LadyfieldFarm again most welcome. We stay in Ross-shire at the mo. In process of trying to find a bit of land but having some real issues with planning / warrants on any potential piece we ever find.
My partner and children are all on the same page now and want to live somewhat off grid and more self reliant, I can grow the veg, compost my shite, even know the basics about generating and storing power, have even decided on more trivial things such as installing a PolyCrub from Shetland instead of standard poly tunnels etc… we just can’t ever get the land. Been at it for several years and so far just pissing in the wind wasting my time.
We are in the process of deciding on another bit I have just been offered across in Sutherland. It’s small but usable, we have the go ahead from surrounding neighbours and the owner has even offered us a much lower price. Sadly the Highland Council are making it impossible.
I am not well versed enough in planning and siting caravans so the planning keep throwing obstacles in the way making it impossible for us to ever buy any of the land we keep being offered. Have lost about 12 offers of land now due to regulatory uncertainty.
I think the only way we are going to be able to do it is to buy the land then apply to build a barn and utilise the time that buys us to get established. Sadly the whole process has already led to me losing a sum of money that would make even the hardiest of folk wince.
Life eh? Just want to do right by my partner and kids and be in touch with nature. Unfortunately thus far the powers that be have not allowed it to happen.
It looks like we are going to have to walk away from this current piece of land and not make an offer. There are a couple of other options at present but I am going to have to approach them in a different way as time is of the essence now. I need to be working, growing and building something that I beleive will not only benefit my family but also the local community around us during this turbulent times.
We shall see what the future holds for us. I can but keep trying 🤞🏼

Ah it drives you mad when you just want to live a life that is considerate of nature and the environment but the 'powers' block you when you also see some of the huge infrastructure that is being built in the highlands in the name of the 'green agenda'. Our glen is being absolutely bombarded at the moment and will be changed forever over the next couple fo years but that's a subject for another video
As for planning, we are no experts, can only tell you our situation. There was a lapsed planning permission on this property when we viewed it so we made an offer conditional on being able to reinstate that planning. It took a while but we did get it and because we are self building we are allowed a caravan here to live in whilst it is being built. 2 years on we are still waiting on a building warrant but we weren't ready to apply for well over a year so that's fine. We get a call from the council once a year it seems just to check we are still in the caravan which I think is for the purposes of ensuring correct council tax banding, So it has been fairly straight forward to be honest. Feel free to email us at admin@ladyfieldfarm.com if we can help in any way to answer questions. Like I say all we can do is tell you about our experience
