Ladyfield Farm
Великобритания
Добавлен 31 май 2020
This is our story of how we sold our home on the Essex coast in England to buy 7 acres of land in a beautiful wee glen in the West Highlands of Scotland. We currently have no house, just a caravan, a ruinous stone byre, 5 sheep and 2 cats. We do however have permission to renovate the barn and to build our new home which we shall do ourselves as well as grow our own food and live as sustainable , deliberate and gentle lives as we can.
No doubt there will be ups and down, victories and disappointments but it will be fun to share the adventures with whoever fancies coming along for the ride.
We really hope you find something you enjoy.

LADYFIELD FARM - Stone Barn Renovation Episode 21: Getting the BIG ridge into position.
One of the nice design features we have come up with in our barn renovation is the section of vaulted ceiling. At the south end of the building the upper floor will end a couple of metres short of the end wall meaning that the downstairs at that point will look right up into the roof space. Because of this and the absence of floor joists in that area the ridge beam has to be beefed up. Beefed up to 13 inches by 4 inches!! So it took a while to figure out how to do this on my own but where there's a will....

LADYFIELD FARM - Stone Barn Renovation Episode 20 : Controlled Demolition (Again)

We finally get the remaining section of the roof down with the tried and tested 'poke it with a big long pokey thing' method.
LADYFIELD FARM - Stone Barn Renovation Episode 19 : First Internal Wall Goes Up
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.Месяц назад
Due to the position of our stairwell we needed to get the bathroom wall up so that the floor joists had something to sit on. Until that was built we couldn't do anymore to the roof. It's all just like putting a puzzle together really, until you get the next right piece in place you can't do the bits that fit into it. So that was the next job...
LADYFIELD FARM - Stone Barn Renovation Episode 18 : More demolition and moving scaffold.
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.Месяц назад
With the roof as precarious as it now is, it's impossible to get up on it to take it down carefully. So the only way is controlled demolition with a stick! Once that was down it was time to move the scaffold into it's next position so I can start to rebuild the next section of roof.
LADYFIELD FARM - Stone Barn Renovation Episode 17 : Cutting and Fitting Rafters

In this video we have to deal with the aftermath of the roof collapsing but then it was time to get the next section of roof built. So here is how I cut and fit a pair of rafters from start to finish.
LADYFIELD FARM - Stone Barn Renovation Episode 16 : One Step Forward, Two Steps Back
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.Месяц назад
As we began to rebuild the new roof on the barn the remaining parts of the original roof started to complain. As I walked past one of the windows I heard some gentle cracking and shifting. So we decided there was nothing we could do but wait for it to come down...
LADYFIELD FARM - Stone Barn Renovation Episode 15 : First Ridge and Rafters Up
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.Месяц назад
Another exciting day at the Ladyfield Barn renovation. Today we get the first ridge of the new roof in place along with the first of the rafters. This will be the first time since we arrived here almost 4 years ago that we will be able to get some idea of how big our bedroom will be and whether or not I'll be able to stand up without hitting my noggin!

Просмотров 1,5 тыс.Месяц назад
The day has arrived..We are taking the roof off of our barn. From the day I saw it over 4 years ago I knew this day was coming and it's been quite the journey to get here but it feels like this is where it gets serious. We are about to cross the Rubicon...
LADYFIELD FARM - Stone Barn Renovation Episode 12 : Joining Ridge Beams and Cutting Floor Joists

In this episode my boy Tom shows me a really clever joint for joining ridge beams together and I get going on preparing the floor joists with a neat idea for gaining some extra height upstairs.

Not had an update for a while. Everything ok ?
Thanks for asking. All is well, just struggling to find time to edit what with trying to get watertight and also trips back to England to see my poorly mum. Next video hopefully coming shortly.
Love this. Bloody awesome mucka. BZ fella, ⚓️🇬🇧🍻💪
That's great Scott, thankyou. Love to get comments like this. Had to look up BZ and now appreciate that as well. Cheers.
Helicopter Hunterway!...😂😂😂
Mad as a hatter.
Looks really nice. Must be well cosy. Xxx
It certainly is. Has been a real game changer.
Love that staple thingy. Where did you get it?
You can get them from Screwfix. It's called a hammer tacker .
This is amazing and just what I'll be referring to for my static. Thanks!
That's great to hear. Hope it goes well. Thanks for watching.
A great job
Cheers Brian, appreciate that.
You’re doing a great job keep up the hard work 😢
Thanks John, I appreciate that.
👌
Thankyou
Nice use of shelving for scaffolding 😂 does the job though.
I'll tell you something, it's a lot more stable than some proper scaffold I've had to go up in my time!
Great result with that level! :D
Have to admit I was pretty chuffed with that one.
Are you a joiner by trade if your not your buddy good
Until I moved to Argyll my working life consisted of about 35 years in the building game just self employed, on my own 99% of the time as well as touring as a professional musician, also solo. That's why it made me smile recently when someone suggested in a comment I probably shouldn't be left to my own devices! Ha ha
Nothing quite like the feeling of seeing that bubble sit right in the middle after so much hard work!
Aye, I had to resist the urge to be smug at that moment!
Looks absolutely brilliant looks totally different fits in with look your after because static caravans look awful just plonked in the middle of no were
Couldn't agree more. It not only looks better but functions better as a place to live keeping the heat in during winter and staying cooler in the summer.
Precision levelling, great job 👍
Could say more by luck than judgement but there was definitely some judgement involved.
Again no sutitles
Hi Dennis, I have been working out how to do that and plan to try and get the new videos subtitled as well as doing the older ones retrospectively but it's going to take some time.
Hope u guys keep safe during this storm
Thanks Tom, just been out battening down a few hatches and so far so good. Next few hours will be interesting!
You are doing a great job as always. It will all be worth it in the end. And i never new crocs did steel toes ,lol. It would smart a bit if one of those timbers or lintels fell on them. But thats how i roll too, lol
Maybe we are onto something here, a whole new range of 4 wheel drive safety crocs. Perhaps I can become the face of Crocs! Head full of holes.
You are amazing and could do with teaching the young men your wonderful knowledge, there's not to many who have a clue about how to build anything these days. I luv your videos and your no nonsense approach to hard work!!
Ah that's very kind of you and thanks for taking the time to let me know. Hard work is good for the soul eh.
I absolutely love these videos, thank you for making them and can’t wait to see the rest of your project 😊
That's so good to hear, thanks so much. When I started out doing this I had no idea whether folks would be into it or just find it boring so it's very gratifying to get comments like this.
@@LadyfieldFarm it’s the perfect thing to watch for somebody like me who wants to sell up move somewhere more rural and build my own home so keep it coming!
@nick-meets-world oh they'll keep coming don't you worry.
Well done with demolition of last of the old roof it's going to look grand well done 😊😊
Thanks Kevin, very happy that's all down now.
I watch the demolitions with great trepidation 😬😬😬 …and then…. there are those darling swallows - snug in their nest (unlike the collared or mourning doves 😅) Good storytelling 👍👍 -V
There'll be even more trepidation for you tomorrow!!
The never ending battle against the elements here in the UK! Well done on the progress. 👍
Oh the elements!!! August was unbelievable this year. We had 15 inches of rain in the month!!
Brilliant as always
You're too kind
Great episode Adrian, thanks for sharing your renovation with us ❤
It really is my pleasure. Please feel free to share it on.
Excellent way of getting the roof down in a safe controlled way. Nice to see you promoting your home town rugby club. Loving the videos as always.
All went as planned at least. And boy I've had some good times at that club.
Pokey stick is the most important tool! Im in aweofwhat youre doing, its incredible.
It won't be the last time it gets used I'm sure.
Looking great every episode 😊
Thanks Sonia.
Oh it's really starting to look like a home, you get a feel of how it will look. I can't express enough how much in awe I am of you doing this on your own. It's incredible!
I can see it finished in my head.
An absolute Joy to watch the two of you !! The Barn is beautiful. -V
Thanks again Virginia. It's not as beautiful as it's going to be....
Another brilliant episode
Cheers Tom, really appreciate your continued support.
Coming on nicely good team work 😊😊
It's always fun when we get to do some of these things together.
Just beautiful
Thankyou kindly.
@@LadyfieldFarm very much looking forward to the next video
@@tomapperly720 working on it....
Did you put the items back in the wall?. I would advise they go back into the wall, as I’ve found a horse shoe in mine so I have put it back when I was rebuilding the wall.
They are not back in as yet but they will definitely be going back as close to their original position as possible.
Sounds like you picked up a bug on your trip to family and our our lovely Essex friends. Stay healthy!
Videos and real time chronology are little askew at the moment but I'm fit as a fiddle just now so all is well. Hope you're good. Planning a trip up again anytime?
@LadyfieldFarm I very nearly made a dash over on the weekend you were at the cricketers! I'm hoping for a spring visit at the very least.
What am I talking about? Spring visit is out of the question. I will be heading south to greet my grandchild (as my grandmother would say, deo volente).
Great work love the use of the piece of wood as a demolition tool😂👍
Controlled demolition is what I like to call it.
“The right tool for everything” 😄 Your channel deserves FAR more subscribers!
I think we're heading in the right direction, hopefully it will take off at some point soon.
There really are people who should Never be left to their own device's!.😮
In case?
All I see is endeavor, problem solving and struggle, I am intimately familiar with all three.
@TheToolnut I very much appreciate that. May your struggles all be worthwhile.
@@LadyfieldFarm You are most welcome Sir, it's only by our deeds that we'll be remembered as men, 💪🔨🪓🌲🇮🇪
No subtitles.
Sorry Dennis, I will try to sort that out.
So much work for one man. Take care!!!
Cheers Alvin, doing my best.
The long pokey-stick method of demolition! 😅 Love it!!! 😁✊
Tried, tested and true.
Glad to see you use the official demolition method of poking it with a stick.
It was either that or bring in a crane!!
Must be a huge relief to have that precarious roof section down and safe - well done!
It certainly is. Only one section left to get down now so hopefully that will behave itself too.
So glad that roof is down 😮 awesome job 💪
I'm afraid there's still one more section to come down yet!
Coming on nicely 😊😊
Piano, piano, as they say in Sardinia.
audio is unfortunately only the left channel occupied bis 15:00 :)
Thanks, I realised that, I think it was a recording issue rather than an editing one and I couldn't solve it.
Your doing a grand job mate, it will be a lovely cottage when you are finished
Thankyou kindly.
Respect. Adrian and Lindsay are unflappable. 🥹. -V
Ha ha, we do our best
Another fantastic vid
Cheers Tom
Gonna look great when you've done a lot of hard work to do in a harsh climate done exactly the same thing myself in John ogroats good luck
Then you no doubt know just how much work it is.
