You definitely did the right thing cladding a Willerby Caravan if you we going to live in it in winter, they were only ever meant to be occupied in the summer months. The later ones were winterised with double glazing and central heating with added insulation because most caravan parks extended their season till January, without cladding the early ones it was bitterly cold when the temperatures dropped causing all sorts of problems with condensation and mould, nice job though and a hell of a sight warmer.
Thank you. It definitely makes a huge difference :) We are able to constantly monitor condensation as we live in it full time so can manage that luckily. The little condensation traps we keep everywhere and they seem to do the job so far :)
Very nice video! Since I was thinking about a similar project.., by just glueing the insulation to the outer wall. But this solution is lasting longer I guess.
Excellent thank you! A very helpful video, have been scratching my head wondering how to go about doing this for our recently acquired caravan which is almost identical to yours! :)
This is the best video I’ve seen on doing up a static. You just get on with the information. Amazing. Just got my static today and I’m planning to do the same. Are you uploading anymore about static renovation? Count me in as a subscriber and I’ll check your other videos out. Thanks a lot!
Thanks for your kind comments! We really struggled finding good information to do this ourselves so tried to get as much info in this video as possible. Yes would love to do more, what would you like to see covered?
Any renovation really unless you’re all done. I just got mine delivered and need to put in a stove, insulation on walls and underneath, cladding, new roof, take down some walls inside to make a bigger bedroom, underfloor heating, wood flooring and possibly double glazed windows. Exciting and daunting. Yes it’s really hard to find decent info. Very grateful for this video.
Hi Chris, thanks for sharing this. Really very helpful and certainly feel brave enough to have a go at this ourselves after watching the video. Deck video next please hehe :)
When using treated timber you must treat all the cuts as that's where it will rot, those gold screws will rust, decking screws shouldn't. Any plans to replace the windows?
Good work, just one thought did you seal each individual insulation panel so the air directly behind it cannot move? Otherwise it will not have any heat retaining properties & condensation will form on the metal (aluminium) surface of the original cladding. Also each batten is a thermal bridge where condensation can form where they contact the metal cladding too...
great job. We have copied it on our caravan which is also an old Willerby.. But...how do we stop water running off the roof and into the kingspan.? The guttering is very similar but there is only overhang at the main window end. The other end has no overhang and we are worried rain will just run between the caravan walls and the kingspan. thanks.
I'm trying to convince my partner we should sell up, buy a field and get one of these. I like the fact it looks a lot more homely. A cabin in the woods sort of feel. I would be tempted to fill and tape any joints and maybe put some sort of membrane over before cladding to really keep any drafts or wind out. Did you consider this? With widening the frame like this, did you consider you could perhaps swap the windows out or add extra glazing? From a planning perspective how much can you do before someone with a clipboard has a problem? So many questions .... I'll have a browse through some videos.
On beginning of covid we moved out from shared accommodation to. We've bought static that is in field, best decision ever. One of the problem with caravan is condensation from roof that dribble to edges of it. Our plan is to spray foam under the roof, so it stick to it, and don't leave any gaps for condensation. Another important thing is floor insulation. Our pipes with hot water are under caravan. So they can foze. So another way is to make under floor heating is by moving them closer to floor and insulate them from ground
Love what you did and the look it’s given. I’m interested in how the feather edge cladding has performed and has there been much movement with it during temperature and moisture changes please?
Am looking to get about an acre of land and living full time in a static caravan off grid. What kind of land should I be looking for ? Someone mentioned brown belt land ? I won’t be running a business.
I think that you both have done a really great job on your home. Well done 👍. I really like this type of caravan but found them to be quite cold even in the spring. Many people who are living life as you are will be taking a lead from you. 👍🇬🇧😃
hi chris , wow thats absolutely mint mate , at the min im looking for about 6-10 acres of brown field or agricultural land to set up a small holding with live stock, iv no intention of getting planning permission to build a house but was going to buy a top quality log cabin at the sum of 43k, now seeing your project wow thats blew me away buddy im well inpressed to say the least
Fanststic job..great video ....im thknking of buying a staic caravan as a lot cheaper than a log cabin ....Have you done further video updates please. .
We are thinking of buying a caravan, but it will be on a holiday park site. Doing this would be great if park regulations let us do it. It improves the look of the caravan.
can you give me an overall cost mate for materials, im so so interested this could save me a fortune and the look doesnt look out of place in the countryside, love it
Thankyou Chris, looking to embark on cladding my mobile home soon. Fantastic video, looks real cosy. would you recommend swapping out the gas heater for a log burner?
Love the build and the explanation. Superb guys. Well done. My question is, what the roof/top of wall interface like now. You’ve come out quite a bit, so what happening to the water on the roof? Any plans to insulate and ply the roof…?
Awesome job! Did you insulate the roof any? Like another 3-4 inch kingspan and boarded and felted? Most heat goes through the roof is all. Ive got a static myself and thining of doing the roof, defo doing the sides after seeing this!
Great video 👍🏻 if you havnt clad anything before well done. As long as there’s breathers and some sealant at the corners to stop water just creeping in I bet that lasts a long time. And I bet that isn’t going anywhere in a stormy winter👍🏻 I’ve thought about doing this to my own static but I have a feeling it might not be transported once this is done. Can anyone tell me if this is true? Maybe even using a more light weight alloy sheet on top of the original but with greater U value between.
This is a great video. How much did this cost if you don't mind me asking? Also help with the wind? My static is on farmland and gets hit pretty hard by the wind
We have that same problem with wind. We definitely think the cladding has helped, it feels a lot less like the "walls are bending" as the cladding takes some of that brunt. Still the windows are exposed to that wind so at times it feels rough but we think it has made a difference :) As for cost it is hard to remember exactly it was definitely less than £1k back when we did it
That is absolutely brilliant, so much more appropriate for a country setting. I am hoping to get land and build and off grid home, but would need a temporary place to live in for 2 or 3 years, and was thinking of a similar thing,. I imagined vertical feather edge fencing cladding, but yours looks like it could stay as a holiday home, once you have some plants in tubs around it
Interesting as I have exactly the same caravan and was thinking of doing it ..... BUT ..... guys ... the caravan is already reasonably well insulated! What about the windows? If you are inside on a winters day and it is freezing cold, touch the walls and they are quite warm. Put your hand anywhere near the windows and you get frost bite. I cant decide whether to spend any more doing something like cladding or just scrap it and get a double glazed one
Hey! We live in our static full time. This is our 3rd winter and probably the coldest so cladding is our next step. Have you noticed a big difference with keeping it warm and using less fuel to heat it?
I don’t think it makes much difference unless you do the underneath and the roof. Also, better to use expanding foam in all the gaps to get a proper seal. 100mm would give you so much more and as it’s on the outside it doesn’t matter.
@TheOceanExploration Thanks for watching and for your comment. It made a big difference for us. Of course there is always more we can do as we live in a box with 25mm insulated walls so all wins are good wins for us, no matter how small
Hi, I enjoyed watching your video, job well done. I just wanted to ask you something: You insulated the walls, but is not there a big heat loss through the roof? are you planning to insulate roof somehow too? And in small places like static caravans is heating another problem. You heat it up very quick so it is very hot inside but also when you close heating unit it gets cold very quick. I dont want to use gas heating that cause condensation and electricity is expensive. I would prefer fireplace but keep stable temperature for long time is hard to get. How do you sorted heating? thank you for the answers and looking forward to your next videos.
Hey sorry for delay. Yes the next plan is the roof, we will add insulation and a secondary roof to it to capture heat in. And will add cladding as a skirt around the bottom too.
As for heating we use just a large woodburner that we fitted in to ours. It keeps heat for a long time, and each night in winter we load it up with logs and put it to its lowest setting and it keeps a fair temperature through the night then. Two winters on now and its working so far :)
it's really cool. I have a caravan back in Lithuania and planning to do something the same, nothing super fancy. One thing I couldn't understand...why did you leave metal cladding and used insulation on top? In my opinion you should've removed it and insulated walls properly. Maybe for UK climate it's enough, but any spaces and cold air touching the iron won't be good.
Hiya, yeh for the climate here it is well enough. We wanted to do the most simple method for helpful insulation but also so it looks great. If we were stripping down the metal too we almost felt like it would have just as well been worth building a frame ourselves. We also wanted to avoid having the pressure of making the new walls watertight. Hope that helps :)
Have you built your extension on the side of your static caravan yet? I’m excited to see how it all looks inside and outside when you’ve got it all completed 😁
@@thedadfarmer That’s amazing. I love all of your videos. They are so helpful for someone like myself who dreams about doing the same as you one day. Thank you 🙂😁
Thank you. We didn't because we left the original metal outer skin on and insulated on top so this would act as a vapour barrier. We do have metal grates on as air flow help.
@@thedadfarmer we’ve started doing ours now. Looks so good already. We’ve used batons then just rolled some roofing fabric membrane across before attaching the cladding. Thanks so much for the inspiration!!
Thanks :) that’s no problem we just decide which one is strongest and cut the other off. Try not to pick it out as don’t want to affect roots of the one keeping. We either use finger nail or some little snips and just cut weaker plants off 😀🌱
It has definitely made a huge difference to the warmth, and it even makes it cooler in the summers too. You still lose heat through the roof, but its a huge difference and we are super happy.
Just one question...did you insulate the tricky angled parts above the windows in your living room? Okay, two questions...are you doing the gutters? Because surely the top of the boards are exposed as they come out further than the roof?
We didn't if I'm honest, didn't think they would make a huge impact not to insulate. And as for the gutters yes we are going to do them, however their are little groove gutters on our caravan at the moment that we only clad up to so they are preventing any water getting in. Hope this helps :)
It's definitely made a good amount of difference to warmth and also to keeping things cool when the sun is out too. Having the roof done, and bringing the cladding all the way to the ground from the caravan (skirt) will make an even bigger difference
I will spend some new windows on mine because i am going down that same road with a static caravan and insulation and redecoration inside. Single pane glass simply is far too expensive in the long run when it comes to heating.
Someone I know is doing this but the other way around the feathet edge boards upright ...also do you have pics of the grey you done on the window frames
Is your land agricultural? If so did you need planning permission to live on it. We have bought a 5 acre field and plan to do something similar, fantastic I found your channel today. Lots of great information, thank you.
Yes it is agricultural and yes needed to have temporary planning to have a static caravan on. We now have 2 and a half years to prove our agricultural business is “successful” then we can go through planning to build a more permanent home as an “agricultural workers dwelling” :)
Thank you for replying, we haven't been able to go to our field because of lock down, hopefully soon. One job we are going to do first is a polytunnel, do you need planning permission for a polytunnel. Looking forward to your next video. 🚜🚜
@@thedadfarmer is this a way of getting round the red tape councils throw at us? i want to do something similar but dont really want to have to prove that i have a business plan to live free
Thank you :) I think if we did this again we would do the double glazing. At the time the price was high to have it done, and we didn't feel we had the skills to do it ourselves. Now I believe we do have the skills to do it, but have decorated all the inside a lot so a bit late. If we were to get another that is the first thing we would do :)
Thank you :) So for gas we use LPG bottles at the moment, this is a temporary measure whilst we look at biogas or other options for heating water and cooking. Our electricity is a solar system that is on our barn and its the only way we have power and is awesome.
Thanks Jacqueline, our static is 35x12ft. I am afraid I cannot find the details on how many boards it was. It took lots of scribbling and calculations to work out how many to order. There are some online calculators for cladding that can help :)
Hi no we didn't the less air gaps the more warmth the insulation will add. If worried about condensation then we are adding the metal air grates for air flow.
We hadn't at first, we used the smaller parts of timber that we could. We have recently added some posts all the way to the ground from the walls which would take any pressure, and we have double the amount of stands under the caravan so doesn't worry us too much. We haven't seen any problems so far since doing it :)
Hiya Chris! We are now copying your video instructions. Have a question... what did you do with the vents? Metal air vents? Then did you put a lip above them to stop the rain getting in? Thanks, Georgie
Hi Georgie sorry for the delay in coming back to you. We are adding this back in retrospectively, going to cut out the right size hole in the cladding. Adding a new metal grate sprayed up in matt gray, then will add a little lip using the cladding wood to stop rain but wont think too much about that as by their very nature the vents / grates are designed with lips on each slat if get the right ones
Hey Carlos, yes it absolutely has helped. Much cooler in the summer, and warmer in the winter. Caravans being all metal can be like sitting in a car all day in the summer and this has hugely helped.
Looks really good. I’m wanting to do something very similar. Couple of questions. How much do you think it would cost in materials and secondly. Did you change the guttering or just work underneath it ? My guttering is about 25/30mm. Glad I was googling insulation, I’ve now found another channel worth watching. All the best 👍
Thanks so much Benjamin. So we worked underneath the guttering for now. most was fine and in tact. I would say in total the timber and materials cost us about £800 but thats with southern timber prices.
Just a comment regarding insulation. Having just sold a property, the surveyor did comment that, with Kingspan, you double the thickness. So when you put in 50mm Kingspan insulation, it actually counts as 100mm. I do not know the science behind the comment.
Drop any questions below and we will be happy to answer them for you, hope this helps :)
i know I am kinda off topic but does anyone know of a good place to watch new movies online ?

I will spend some new windows on mine because i am going down that same road with a static caravan and insulation and redecoration inside. Single pane glass simply is far too expensive in the long run when it comes to heating.
Do you mind me asking how much all the materials cost you to do this yourself?
I have a static, I'm looking to do the same but am wondering how did you seal it so the insulation didn't get wet?
Did you add anything to the roof or leave as is? From an insulation perspective?
Someone I know is doing this but the other way around the feathet edge boards upright ...also do you have pics of the grey you done on the window frames
Yeh that's a nice look too :) Being completely honest we haven't got the window frames done yet. Other jobs got in the way
How were costs/time scales?
Sorry for delay in coming back to you. Hard to remember exactly how much it cost but it was definitely less than 2k and we had it done in 2 days :)
@@thedadfarmer Wow - two days?!!!!
Are you still going to be doing videos ? Just found your Chanel
Hi Linda, Thank you, yes we are getting ready to start releasing again this month. Lots of content to come :)
@@thedadfarmer is this a way of getting round the red tape councils throw at us? i want to do something similar but dont really want to have to prove that i have a business plan to live free
can I ask how much it cost?
Nice video. May i ask why you have no double glazing? Have you thought about it? Worth doing?
Thank you :) I think if we did this again we would do the double glazing. At the time the price was high to have it done, and we didn't feel we had the skills to do it ourselves. Now I believe we do have the skills to do it, but have decorated all the inside a lot so a bit late. If we were to get another that is the first thing we would do :)
Can u make underneath with this foam board too? Should be nice insulation also
Yes you definitely could, would be much warmer
I see you have a water tank but with regards to gas and electricity what did you do for a supply? Great build btw
Thank you :) So for gas we use LPG bottles at the moment, this is a temporary measure whilst we look at biogas or other options for heating water and cooking. Our electricity is a solar system that is on our barn and its the only way we have power and is awesome.
Fab video! It makes it feel so much easier to do! What size is your static, and what quantity of boards did you need for the cladding?
Thanks Jacqueline, our static is 35x12ft. I am afraid I cannot find the details on how many boards it was. It took lots of scribbling and calculations to work out how many to order. There are some online calculators for cladding that can help :)
Hi! Did you not have to leave a gap between the insulation and caravan? Thanks for your vid 🤩
Hi no we didn't the less air gaps the more warmth the insulation will add. If worried about condensation then we are adding the metal air grates for air flow.
just a thought but have u taken into account the weight when wet/snow on the caravan chassis in winter ?
Hi, can you tell if doing this will help also with the heat in the summer ? Thank you
Hey Carlos, yes it absolutely has helped.
It will certainly burn better but you’ll still have the problem of what to do with the aluminium carcass when it’s out.
did you need extra planning permission to do this??
Just a comment regarding insulation. Having just sold a property, the surveyor did comment that, with Kingspan, you double the thickness. So when you put in 50mm Kingspan insulation, it actually counts as 100mm. I do not know the science behind the comment.
Good job but for future jobs stagger your joins. Same as you would with a wooden floor.
Im thinking of bug 🐛 every where
Why it looks shit
