Ok so this isn't quite Harry Nilsson In Concert - yes, he's playing live but there's no audience. The audience you see have been edited in from other shows in the series. Why? Harry didn't do live concerts and so it makes this UK TV show first broadcast on New Years Day 1972 even more special. I love the version of "Life Line" in 'The Point' but the rendition here is truly heartbreaking and is my favourite Nilsson performance.
This show was recorded in 1971 at the BBC Television Theatre (now the Shepherd's Bush Empire). It is interesting as it shows Harry in the middle of the two main phases of his career - the early whimsical songs ('67-'71) followed by the later harder-edged period ('71 onwards).
There are songs here from Harry's albums to date ('Without Her' and '1941' are from 'Pandemonium Shadow Show', 'Mr Richland's Favourite Song' and 'One' are from 'Aerial Ballet', 'Life Line', 'Think About Your Troubles' and 'Are You Sleeping?' are from 'The Point', 'Gotta Get Up' and 'Coconut' are from 'Nilsson Schmilsson'.) 'Joy' appears here in an early version - it wouldn't be recorded until the following year's 'Son Of Schmilsson' - and whilst not officially released at the time, a version of 'Walk Right Back' has appeared on the excellent Nilsson RCA box set (which you must buy immediately if you don't already own it).
One of the most under rated singer/song writers! Rest in peace Harry.
Took the words right outa my mouth
For your soul, watch this video once a month at the absolute very least.

I am 80 years old and played The Point for my children on a record player. Still love to listen to it and everything else he sings. His voice is without a doubt the purest ever.
Me too. I got the DVD also.
I first heard it when I was in South Vietnam!
They have it on DVD now. It's great!!
My mother would have been 81 this year; she also bought this record for me when it came out (I think she was still working in a record store then). When he died she was so sad. His voice is wonderful. My daughter listens to him now.
Thank you! Harry means so much to all of us.
First time I've seen this. I've always loved him ❤️ 💕. One of my favorite songs of all time is " Without You ". And I remember a lot of songs, I'm 76. Thank you 😊 for this ❤️ 💓 💖
one of the most underrated artists of the last 50 years. another talent gone too soon.
He was rated highly by those who do ratings
Millions-okay, hundreds of thousands-of people love the singing and music of Harry. Made our days a lot sweeter than they would have been if he hadn't "done his thing." THX for putting him on YT.
My mother’s mother played “The Point” for her on vinyl as a child. Then my mother played “The Point” for me on vinyl as a child. God Bless You, Harry Nilsson for all your creativity and beautiful music!! What an underrated and under appreciated artist he was!!
Yes! My favorite 8th grade English teacher played The Point every year to all his classes. Such a fantastic introduction to Harry and memory of a teacher who cared.
Cool nan :P
@@quirk1sw That’s amazing! I’m glad your teacher shared Nilsson’s music with each class! There’s a documentary called “Who is Harry Nilsson and why isn’t everyone talking about him?” It’s fantastic! You should definitely check it out! 🌟
@@chill_lover We called her Nan too lol! Nilsson’s music resonates with generations! 🥰
I miss music and tv like this. Glad we have youtube.
I am too
Walk right back to me this minute.. SO missed Harry! Thank you!
One of the world's finest voices, spirits and original songwriters. Thank you for this offering.
For a while now, I've been yearning for a movie to be made about Harry, with the same concept as "Love & Mercy" having one actor play a younger Harry, and another playing an older Harry. How awesome would that be!?
That would be really awesome 👍👍👍👍
That's really a fantastic idea
I’d be first in line to see it.
Would be fun to see a biopic of the Hollywood vampires
Too bad they already cast Dano as Wilson, cos he has a real resemblance to Nilsson.
beautiful warm tribute to a genius who burned the candle at both ends - and what a bright light
The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long - and you have burned so very, very brightly, Harry.
An Earth bound Angel..... Back up to the sky! Those who have been touched by your magic are better for it! God Bless you Harry!
Tastes lie a teardrop to me. Beautiful.
This song was the background for a cheerleader routine at my high school back in 1973. My cheerleader friends and I still love this song. It's SO much fun, and today I realize that Nilsson really was a musical genius. Plus, he had a great sense of humor. Rest in peace, beautiful soul, and thank you.
We also created a routine to "Kung Fu" that involved the entire football team. We had great senses of humor, too. :)
What depression looks like expressed by a true artist. Brilliant thanks for posting, now I need to cry.
I'm not even a 70s kid or an American. After watching the movie 'the point', I absolutely fell in love with Nilsson's style! I feel so nostalgic!
Finally, a more recent reply. I just found this last night and posted it to a twitter request needing "some positivity right now".
I love you Harry Nilsson and love last a lifetime. I'm old now Dearest, and in the not-too-distant future I will join you in heaven, and hear your sweet voice once again. Carolyn
Nilsson remains one of the most under-appreciated artists of his time. Those who know his work greatly admire it. Sadly, few outside my generation remember what a freaking phenomenon he was. "Didn't he party with Lennon?" is the most cogent response I receive when I mention his name. Thank you for posting this. Perhaps some young musicians may find it and be inspired.
I just had to reply to this. How old are the idiots asking if he "partied with Lennon"? I am in my late 30's yet never liked much of my own generation's stuff, save some really good "alternative" music. Most of the artists I like, love, admire, what have you, are from other eras. Whether Classical from 1800s or the great 60s-70s stuff. How anyone doesn't know Harry Nilsson makes me so sad. I'm crying right now hearing his voice and thinking of my mum, who died when I was in my late teens. Most of what I like is influenced from her, and I ain't complaining. I was born too late.
Harry was a musical god. I'm sad so few know his work. it's up to us fans to keep his legacy alive.
Ignorance is bliss? NO, ignorance is fucking HELL. Those ignorant of Nilsson should sew their radio providers for failing to supply such life changing, emotively sublimed music to their pitiful and Katy Perry entranced lives. God Bless
It's sad that most 50 year olds don't know his work, let alone anyone younger. Harry deserves to be known!
I'm In my teens and have recently discovered Nilsson. I've been essentially showing him to everyone I know because he is fucking BRILLIANT. He has an incredible sense for melody similar to Elliott Smith and (of course) the Beatles. I love this man. I hope one day people will rediscover him and his brilliance will be known.
I had this. It came on after Midnight Cowboy. I had never heard of this singer, till he sang Everybodys Talkin. I watched The concert so many times. My wife got me the complete box set. RIP.
Paul + John = HarryThank you!
I loved his music from the first time I heard him. Never received the acclaim and appreciation he deserved.
Listening this 1rst day of Spring 2024...Remembered...
Stumbled upon this. Absolute eye opener. May have to get this guys complete collection.
His music should be forever posted to remind older and newer generations of what a genius we had. Nilsson lives.
Harry had great vocal range. Perfect pitch. Warm, sad, heart-rending chords.
Great story: Some critic criticized Harry for not crediting his backing singers on the albums. The reason: Harry recorded all the backing vocals
@@garyrasberryjr.552 He's the only.person who ever really kept up with Freddie Mercury on those insane multi-part harmonies
Up until he messed up his vocal cords during Pussy Cats
Don’t forget his voice cracks
@@sthomasond did you notice Harry plays piano with his wrist bent back like Freddie Mercury also.
I was a bit young when Harry was popular. I'm 42 now, and his voice is the best I have ever heard. He is a legend in my mind.
It is my hope you have reached 47 years old and life is still filled with music this good 😌
Did you know Harry was John Lennon's and Paul McCartney's favorite musician?
This from a man with Butthead as his caricature . I am 59 and while I can't see eye to eye on your choice of animated representatives , I can agree that Harry is a good listen . ( Hey Beavis...pull my finger )

Harry was truly outstanding!
This is the best musical performance I've ever seen. I've been watching this for years now , and it astounds me every. single. time. i watch it. . He's so good that I'm at a complete loss and have no words. One of the Greatest of All Time. Rest in Peace, Harry. ;-).
Harry said in one of his last interviews a statement that made me think so much! He said, "I had everything going for me except one thing....Me".
Unfortunately, that's a theme many of us understand. And probably why we can universally relate to his lyrics and pathos.
His vocals are better than any I've ever listened to...period.
Harry saved my heart & imagination when I was dying when i was young. He suffered.

For me, Harry Nilsson was the greatest musician in our country.
Without You was one of those I listened to over & over...I was 14 ...what can I say ❤️
Lisa I was 13 when "Without you" was 1st aired. It inspired me to play the piano. Still one of my favorites!
Me too!
But I was 65!
Did one session with him in the mid 80's.I'll never forget it, or Harry. Wonderful guy, and simply one of the best singer songwriters I've ever heard. Thanks much for posting this.
Thanks for your comment - if you have time to write it, I'd love to hear more about your time with Harry.
Wow, I would love to have met him--he seems like he just has the most down-to-Earth, beautiful soul.

The more i listen to Nilsson the more i realize how amazing he was!! love his music...
I’m 52 but I’m only now discovering Nilsson’s music. With every song, I’m lifted up, rocked, rolled, tickled, torn, and put back together in a state of reverence which I can’t quite explain. I feel like a kid again. His music; his voice…treasure beyond measure. I can’t hardly wait to share them, as you have. Thank you!
Beautifully different, Original and unafraid to test musical boundries. No wonder some referred to him as the 5TH BEATLE. Still own the Albums. Thank you
When he sings I always cry
Obviously he never sold-out and didn’t get plummeted to super stardom. He’s still legend status to those who know and appreciate true musical talent.
Many thanks for posting this. As a young teenager, I used to watch Harry Nilsson every chance I got. Loved "The Point". His talent was amazing. That voice! At 64, I hope this inspires younger musicians.
The "Walk Right Back..." medley is a great example of Harry's vocal range. One critic took Harry to task for not crediting his backing vocalists on an album, not knowing, of course, that Harry did all the backing vocals as well.
One of his best works. It's fun. Once you hear it, you can't unhear it. So when I hear this song, I sing the Cathy's Clown part.
Harry 3. Critic 0.
Lennon before meeting Nilsson to the press called Nilsson his favorite “group”
@@ENigma-um8zw McCartney too! They were both right.
He wrote some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard.
His voice is so beautiful it almost makes me cry. I named my cat after him.
Harry was one of a kind. I disagree with the prevalent comment here that “he’s underrated”. Everyone I know who’s cool knows for a fact that Harry Nilsson reigns supreme. It’s pretty well understood. We all love this man. If you don’t, no one can help you at all.
Those who say he is "underrated" were not around at the time to appreciate him and his music... GREAT memories that will NEVER fade away...
Greatest show of pure musical talent around....Harry really played like he was completely alone and so totally engrossed in his musical world that nothing else exsisted to him....AMAZING...
I agree, so glad to have been introduced to this phenomenon who died so young but bequeathed so much!
I've never understood why he wasn't huge, incredible voice complimented by extreme musicality.
If John Lennon and Paul McCartney say that I'm their favorite musician, that would be enough recognition for me for a lifetime. This concert demonstrates why and how.
He was
Unfortunately he was incredibly self-destructive. He became a serious alcoholic. He also had a terrible fear of performing live, so never toured. This video shows his incredible voice. Such a huge talent.
He WAS huge at the time, but he didn't care much about fame so he went in his own direction.
I bought some of his albums in the 70s as a teenager so he must've been pretty well known cos I wasn't too adventurous about music in those days. There weren't any videos, just what I heard on AM radio.
Man... this recording of Without Her is flawless. Favorite artist of all time--wish he could have held on
I can't believe this film exists. You just taken me back 40 years in time to the happiest years of my life. I'm crying, Thank you!!!!!

Beautiful.
Harry Nilssons song and music is some of the best and most beautiful I have ever heard.
Harry was so good. One of the very best - ever.
The best music special ever made.
Happy 75th Harry. You're a treasure.
Harry Nilsson was one of a kind, and aheaed of his time as a singer, song writer; musician. Very talented and full of positive vibes. His style of music just outstanding, he really brought it to us as a serious musician. love his music.
My girlfriend and I loved his music. When I watched this video I'm reminded so forcefully of that time in the early and mid-70s. He sang our songs of love and they live forever, even though he didn't and neither did she. She left me for some other guy, then years later got killed in a horrible car ccident beneath Mr. Hood in Oregon. Somehow I think that wherever she is, she's still humming his beautiful songs........and maybe he is, too.
I knew Nilsson's most famous songs, as everyone does, but very little about the man. I just watched the documentary about his life and became fascinated. What an extraordinary talent and what a bittersweet life he led. I came away with respect for his musicality and compassion for his pain. It seems as if he spent his whole life trying to get over the self-hatred caused by his father's abandonment of him. No matter how great his musical achievements, it was never enough to counter the torment. He basically destroyed himself, as if he didn't believe he was worthy of his own gifts. But, as is so often the case, he probably wouldn't have produced such amazing work if he hadn't been so troubled.
+zolluuu I just watched that Documentary last night. Very interesting. I have his essential hits playing in my car. I agree with you that he probably wouldn't have produced such amazing work if he hadn't been so troubled.
+B a b y G i r l I rented this DVD from my Library. Excellent Documentary. The DVD is entitled.....Who is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him)?
Appreciating his music and showmanship has been passed down through my family, going on three generations. His music is medicine for my soul.
This is by far the best nilsson performance. I wish he played live more than he did.
michael davidson Harry never played live, did all the vocals himself with out any other back up vocals, amazing man.
michael davidson ... Harry agreed to do this special without an audience. Any footage of an audience was added during editing. Success without ever touring - incredible.
@@darrelltucker9968 Yes I am aware that the audience was edited in later. I guess what I meant to say is I wish more raw versions of many of his songs existed. Like the song Without Her for example. The strings are incredibly busy on the studio recording and I much prefer the version in this performance. The studio version sounds like the producer was trying to be George Martin or something, and frankly not doing a great job at it. Even though my comment is 4 years old I am still watching this performance! The power of Harry!
michael davidson I agree that I prefer the stripped down versions. If you have Spotify and haven’t yet, you should check out the Nilsson sessions albums. Absolutely amazing.
@@erollmunro7718 I think that's part of the reason he never really reached the recognition he deserved. Doesn't take anything away for me, except for the lack of live material.

@@kelloggs5473 If not Harrison, certainly Ringo Starr drink tequila with him!
I've known about this guy for many years but until now I never listened to his music, and it is absolutely amazing.
Back in late 80s I had a copy of the CD Nilsson Schmilsson, and listened to it a lot, played it for my children. My life got very busy and not until I retired in 2011 did I realize he wrote and recorded Everybody's Talkin at Me for Midnight Cowboy. Then I started listening and learned of his concerts with a symphonic orchestra. I discovered this musical genius in my 60s!
@@anastar37 Harry did not write Everybody's Talkin'. The song was written (and recorded) by Fred Neil in 1966. Harry rerecorded it for Midnight Cowboy after writing The Lord Must Be in New York City for the film.
He also took Badfinger's "Without You" and made it a bigger hit than the original.
The man was magic.
He's one of those few actual musical masters. It's incredible to watch
Just don’t watch his ‘92 Beatlefest appearance. Very sad how he totally lost his singing ability at the end.
So incredible. I loved the live version of Life Line one of my all time faves from Harry. RIP.
This is the first time I've seen him perform. Unbelievable! What a talent! When he looks at the camera while performing "One", it warmed my soul.
Great copy! Nilsson's voice is cherubic.! There is no better!

Everybody's talking hooked me. Figured out an arrangement and was proud. Then I got a piano, and ended up going on a deep dive of his work because of gotta get up, and I fell in love. He was an amazing artist.
Knew of Nilsson in the 70's. Didn't get into him.
Now fifty years later can't stop listening to him. Amazing!
that coconut song is amazing
Yes. It definitely shows a musical genius' humor and wit. Also the dubbed in trio on another song, with the subtlest gestures, and audience reactions. BRILLIANT!
God that first song hits any musician who truly listens to those lyrics. Certainly gives me chills. It certainly describes all those who never got their chance but in light still gives me hope and should to all.
Mr Nilsson has been a friend for almost all my life...didnt have to meet him to have him stay with me through lonely nights...so "As Time Goes By" "Remember" what a "One" and a "Joy" and while "Everybody's Talkin' " about "Coconuts" " I look up and sing "The Moonbeam Song" for "Without You" what would have been "The Point".
+LadyMyrddin That's really cool.......his music was all around whilst i was younger,.....and tormented soul he may have been.... like so many others......talented .....not of this solar system.

As somebody who still writes compulsively in the studio but (for many reasons) can't get out in front of people very often, this is hugely inspiring. Thank you for putting it together. Harry is a personal hero of mine and these rarities are very special.
Such a treat to see Harry perform even if via the youtubes...thanks for this, brilliant Harry RIP
I was always fascinated by this guy who was too shy to perform in public. It amazes me that he was overlooked back in his time - and still today this youtube has only been seen by 67,000 people. If you take a listen, he was brilliant, and an influence to the Beatles and more.
Donald Peterson I think the 'too shy to perform' thing is a bit of a myth. He did perform in public on a number of occasions and showed no nerves or stage fright at all. I believe it's more about the fact that he didn't WANT to do it. As Micky Dolenz says in the "WIHN" documentary "He just didn't want to be on at 8". I also think he liked the idea of creating a mythology around himself. It was a concious decision for him to be known initially just as "Nilsson" rather than his full name; his early albums don't really show his face in a lot of detail - again a deliberate decision; and I believe the thought that he could enter the public's conciousness as the guy 'who doesn't perform' appealed to him. As he says in the Jackson Braider interview elsewhere on this channel "That's a neat one".
I totally agree dude..this dude doesn't even get radio play on classic rock!. Such a damn shame.
+Donald Peterson When the Beatles came to New York in 1964, Ed Sullivan asked who in America they would like to meet - They all said Harry Nillson (ˆ◡ˆ)
+Reggie Baker Not exactly, LOL. When asked at the launch of Apple who their favorite American artist was, Lennon and McCartney both said "Nilsson". He wasn't making records yet when The Beatles first invaded. :-)
+Reggie Baker Something like that happened, but not until 1968 :)
This is incredible, one of my favorite videos on all of RUclips, and it's the closest thing to seeing him in concert that exists . . . but he's not playing in front of an audience here, or anywhere, because he never toured or played live concerts. This is all explained by the poster I thought I'd just say it again in the comments. This is the closest we'll ever get to live Nilsson.

+Harry Nilsson Archive You put together a wonderful group! As a DJ in the 70's I remember playing these tunes..
Wow, just... wow... I think Nilsson just had one song - melancholy and happiness - but played throughout different melodies, stories, and titles. Just soulful... Thank you for putting this up.
Masterful
90% of people don't know who this guy is until you start rattling off his songs, then there is amazement..."that was him??"
Most people know his songs but don't know him, because he gave very few live performances. He was terrified of being in front of an audience, and never overcame that fear. But he was the first popular artist that proved it was possible to create a career from film and studio. He was a flawless studio artist. Most of the songs on this video aren't performed in front of an audience.
