A short clip of this can be seen in John Scheinfeld's wonderful documentary "Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him)?" - but this is the entire guest spot Harry made on Playboy After Dark, originally transmitted on 30th August 1968. Harry guests with Otto Preminger, the Director of the film "Skidoo", a few months before its release. Harry had composed the score for the film and appears in it briefly as a tower guard. It's interesting to see the relationship between the Director (quite famous and powerful at that time) and his young protege at the time. It was during the making of "Skidoo" that Harry flew over to England for a few days to meet his idols, The Beatles. Otto Preminger had paid for the flight from the film's budget, provided that Harry could persuade them to feature in the film! (See Alyn Shipton's excellent biography "Nilsson: The Life Of A SInger/Songwriter").
I have sourced this, as I have many of the uploads on this channel, from a Nilsson DVD set that has been doing the rounds for a few years - you'll find it if you know where to look! I am indebted to the person who put that together. I have just cleaned up the picture a little bit.
Harry was a gent, I hung out chatting to Harry in his latter years as an 18 year old in a recording studio - about 2 hours we yakked side by side on a couch behind the Audio Desk during a recording session ... just a lovely bloke, Thanks Harry ... you will be missed!
Viewed this more than a year ago. Watched it many times over. Finally tracked down “Skiddo”. Went down a rabbit hole reading about Harry’s relationship with Otto Preminger. Harry’s is “27 going on 63 “he says so respectively. Trumpets 🎺 of hugs to The Harry Nilsson Archive for archiving and mastering the incredible collection of Nilsson’s work here on RUclips. God bless Harry and Zak Nilsson ( his first born son) . Their memory lives on forever 🎶💕🎶
God broke the mold when he made Harry.
It was The End Of An Era,
when Harry died.
I will always love Harry Nilsson and his music.
R.I.P., Harry.
😏
Otto Preminger looks and dresses like Dr evil in the Austin powers movies
Must have inspired the character, at least in part!
What a voice!
So little videos of Nilsson... Thank you very much
He never liked performing live. This was earlier in his career and appearing on this show was a good career move for him. He was well behaved--unlike in his real life!
I love this version of Together. Groovy.
so in love with Harry.
me too
A true artist/ craftsman.
I can't get enough of the best singer songwriter the one and only Harry Nilsson, he is and will always be my favorite artist not prince!!!
I agree! Mine too! The One and only Harry Nilsson!
They're both great, along with Todd Rungren, Laura Nyro and many more
Very talented man. I watched The Point on TV for years before I knew who he was!
"Hold my drink Hugh, while I admire your Barbi " ... What a babe !!
Great post! Thanks!
Later Harry said he was BSing Hugh about the God reference in My Old Desk. Wonderful footage. Nilsson was a musical genius...
. . . only I don't think he really was. He'd been brought up Catholic, which is hard to shake, and he always loved playing with words, multiple meanings, etc. And the idea of a desk as God has a lot of sweetness and comfort to it.
@@kategilpin5982 I think you're right. With Harry almost idolizing the Beatles and G ood. O ld. D esk being such a Beatle thing to do.....I think so..
Just a comment - - when Harry and Hef are taking about "anagrams" they mean to say "acronym"
Loved the expressions on faces as they are actually digesting lyrics of "Together" whilst holding their partners.
We love you Harry, rest in peace
Dude has skills ☺
Nilsson's wordplay appears on the back cover of Pussycats. You see a RUG with the letter D on the left and S on the right.
Great filmage.
Who would dislike this video?
Good ol Harry...
Not to many people have told Hugh Hefner to "Hold my drink".
Too
I'm the same age as Harry Nilsson is in this video clip wow i didn't know that
Heff looking so young.
the fifth one !!(beatles)....yet No 1 of his own right
Exactly I wish people would stop all these" Beatle references " when talking about Nilson it's really tiresom and disrespectful to his OWN stardom
Otto Preminger got the DRIP!
“.....you have a gift to really annoy me.” Whoa..... Preminger and Nilsson really get into it!
The best part of this clip is Otto Preminger in a Nehru jacket and love beads.
I thought that also. An old guy (63) trying to look like a teenager.
Hey,....watch it. I'm64.
I'm 54 not far behind you. How stupid would either one of us look wearing a Nehru jacket and love beads.?
A good friend of mine had a Nehru jacket back then. I was jealous. I did have a lot of paisley shirts and hip hugger bell bottom pants with the wide belt, but alas...no Nehru.
I just checked. Ebay has Nehru jacket for around $40 but none of the ones I saw were colorful like Preminger's
Cosbys lurking about…
Adorable Barbi Benton
Ohhhhh, Barby Benton!
She's aged quite well too since
I always thought Carol Channing was a dude in drag ,even in this phone call
0:06 where are your pants girl? haha crazy fashion in 1968
Man's modern concept of the meaning of God.
Alex Thompson n
Sad, a desk...
I know someone who actually looks like he could be Otto's son: Randolph Williams!!! Sorry for naming names, Randy!
After I drink drink I always break glass. lol, Nilsson is King. Honestly tho this looked that it might turn into a porn flick real quick
COOL VIDEO ! THURSDAY 5/25/23 MAY 25, 2023
DOCTOR EVIL IN 1968 SITTING DOWN!! HE LOOKS LIKE DOCTOR EVIL FROM AUSTIN POWERS MOVIES.
he is real one
we get it dumbass
The audience couldn't clap worth crap...
Jesus Christ, you're not kidding, lol! Even the black dudes had no rhythm
That happens often, unfortunately.
Someone was throwing in off beats.
who is the owner of that lovely bossom in the purple dress
+Jeremy Seinfeld oh k like em in retirement age do ya jerk oops i mean jer ,lookin at 1968 duh
☺😨🚰? I'm sure that you are looking at the same thing as the first one!
That was Barbi Benton. What a classic hottie!!
11:11Carol Channing
BARBIE BENTON IS A STAR!!!
Possibly the weirdest TV show ever produced.
I think The Gong Show might disagree.
Great footage awful clapping! LOL
Was that Glen Campbell at 7:20 ?
It certainly does looks like him
I thought the same!
Hi
is that Dr. Evil?
watching him explain to HUGH HEFFNER the meaning of GOD is just bizarre. I doubt I'll know anyone who will be impressed as much as I am
Hugh Hefner and Woody Harrelson share the same dubious glint.
Kathryn McMorrow what is a dubious glint?
@@bluecollarlit Listen to John Prine's Illegal Smile
such a shin dig hahah
is that JK Simmons who introduces cast and crew?!
Hugh messed up losing Barbi Benton ...
Really? He only had like 10,000 other women he could chose from!
@@bradfordpauler2538 True ... but a prime example of Hef having the ultimate, beautiful Jewish-American Princess ...
@@bradfordpauler2538 From the stuff revealed since his passing, including from his last wife, it sounds like he had 10,000 women but never found happiness.
thanks unreal! 69 wow,
Yikes ! Harry make your way over to Don Draper's house quick.
Saw PAD when I was 13 or so which gave me a lifelong distaste for this type of fake gathering. Love Nilsson, though.
Yes I suppose you prefer the whites and blacks to be separated. I think we get where you're coming from.
Harry was great. This show was kind of pretentious and seemed very fake. It's sad someone so talented had to hang out with such talentless people.
You cant blame Hef for showing off Barbi ... Harry probably wanted just to sing to her.
Barrack Obama --------- hot tub time machine ----------- is in the crowd
Didn't really enjoy Preminger's manspreading!
