I agree about the teaching to draw... When I took art classes after high school and my twenties, they would teach you different methods by example. Of course going back to the famous artists. And you would learn the names of the methods and the.s of art and style but The only thing I remember being taught was perspective. Like if you're drying a building. But no one can teach you how to dry your own lines or your on trees or anything. Just some techniques you're exposed to. I think that's the same with anything including cooking. Some people can't follow a recipe to save their lives.
You can have the same exact recipe in a class and it all comes out different.
And also language my second thing to cooking in art. Besides computer sciences for my job which to me was language with computers... We had one girl in my class. That was my friend and when I was study in spanish fir6 years in my first year The teacher tried to have me help her understand the language and she just could t get it. Even though I taught her that the words Our backward sometimes the one thing you can teach is how they formulate a sentence. You say red table, In spanish it's table of red. Their nails are always first and description second. That part you can teach but you didn't get it. The 1 day she came in really proud, saying she worked on her homework for like 2 hours and translated every word, and she said it should be much better to day. I put so much working to this. And the teacher sometimes would ask us to read out loud parts of the homework. I was so embarrassed for her because she literally translated every word in the exact order of the english sentence... Completely ignoring how the spanish sentences set up. Which is the thing that is most important in foreign languages. The teacher didn't say anything i've heard a few snickers in the class. The teacher pulled me aside and said can you explain to her again. And I think I said to the teacher I can't i've tried. I have no idea why that teacher wouldn't talk to her and made me do it. After that I didn't really help her anymore. I tried to say you can't translate every word in the same order. I don't think she dropped out. And the teacher gave a pass and grade for trying, but she never took spanish again. I eventually became fluent.
Even though i'm scottish born.. So even though there's hundreds of classes in the arts I completely agree with you. You can't teach someone to have talent. Like me, I can't sing. I took one class in elementary school. It was a choir. I realized I was bad and never opened my mouth again. Not even to sing happy birthday!!

I love the idea of little birds on the Christmas tree!! Do you always put your candy canes on upside down? They are magically hanging there…which is just fine, actually…Christmas is about magically making children happy isn’t it? I love the sound of the rain too! I didn’t know how it rained in Brittany until I watched your videos! It must be quite green and lush. Thank you for the sweet video!💕💕💕

Sometimes I get things upside down or back to front! Especially things that I’m not really familiar with as a traditional thing, like candy canes, which aren’t really traditional English, but adopted from the states, and I suppose I wasn’t thinking about how to attach them, just they look the wrong up when the hook is at the top - I’m weird, I know!

You have rain & we have about 10 inches of snow.
We have about 10 cows & a few calf's that have decided to stop over here for the last few days. We finally found the owner & he brought hay today. My husband was just on his way get hay when he showed up!
So it's been interesting , we have 40 acres & we get lots of wildlife now long horn cows!

I have come to the conclusion, after months of watching a wide range of watercolor artists online, why I prefer your presentations so much. I enjoy your whimsey, but moreover, I appreciate your words. You do not spend excessive time saying the words/phrases "just gonna grab some green" or say "kinda" fifteen times during a fifteen minute timespan or "gunna" . I feel terrible for admitting that the slang often used "is just kinda" ....well, ya know....thank you Diane for every video you have ever done. I have come to appreciate not only a presentation visually, but the way one speaks as well. Please don't take these comments as too critical, as it is meant to be for a bit of fun, but when I heard you say that you are deleting "grab" from your vocabulary, I had to laugh. I also can now draw/paint a robin and a rabbit thanks to you. :)

I didn't realize there were a pen as you could draw with first and then do water color and they don't run. It's been so long since I've done this. I always had to pencil sketch first. Then do water colors wait to everything dried. And then I would outline with pen and ink or put sometimes texture in with the pen. But I was using the old fashioned pens that draw up the ink with the point and dip it into the well. Because i'm that old or in classes that's all they had us buy. In the nineteen seventies or late sixties in school. I have been to some really cool art stores here in California. And I did see different types of pins and colors but i've never bought them. I'm looking back into this now that i'm going to be fully retired. And I'm done with computers and technology. I teach software on this side. But I want to get back to my artistic roots. Cooking drying and painting. Well, I've always kept cooking but I've also done arts and crafts. When my son was little I could entertain him and have him help What I call three dimensional arts. He would have never had the patience for me to do my painting a drawing. So I've waited a lifetime but I believe I know I lost quite a few of my paintings. I still have some Of the ones I did in high school added my early twenties. Not too Many because sometimes my teachers would ask if they could keep my drawings to show other classes. And then they wouldn't give them back At the end of the school year I was really upset with one teacher. She kept them all. And when I asked for them back At the end of the year I had to come like 3 days after school closed at a certain time. And I couldn't get my dad to take me. I think that was really wrong of her. But I remember in class when she used to tell us About drawing and painting she would use previous students artwork. Then I realized she stole it. That's how she had all their paintings. I was too shy to say anything to my parents or the teachers. But to this day it still bothers me. I drew pictures of nights and shining armor and individual Chain mail it took me forever. Castles and statues in history. Well at least you're in my minds eye.

I have used Schmincke watercolors since around 1988 when they first became available to me - I went to Germany and “discovered” them there. Sadly they were very hard to find in England at that time and later when I lived in Canada, impossible to find. However, I still have a set and now replace them when I need them buying online. The difference is the price. One tube of Schmincke costs probably three times what Meeden tubes cost. And the difference is minimal for a beginner x

I have decided to paint Christmas card s in advance so I will have plenty for next year,I sent my American FB friend one she wanted to know how I painted it so you may get a new subscriber Diane,I'll let you take the blame😂😂 . My art teacher at school taught us to draw,we all loved her,her art room was separated from the rest of the school so when it was time for us to take our O level exams, she put a young lad who was in trouble with the head (in detention) as a guard on the door as a lookout for the head, and blasted out Beethoven for as long as the exam took ,as a result we all past our O level exam, so what does that tell you? Funny enough I submitted a drawing which was displayed after the exam ,and have always been able to draw ,which annoys the more snobby artists in my art group who trace , hummm, So thank you Mrs Bradbury your my Hero x☺

Those sorts of memories are very precious aren’t they! Art was definitely my favourite subject at school and I did get my O level but I have ZERO recollection of it - probably traumatised by some event involving my disobedience (I was very naughty at school, I bet you never would’ve guessed !!) I would have loved to go to art college but being from a working class family my mother thought it better that I learn to type and find a husband … a very old chestnut but she was probably right and that’s what I did anyway…

Funny isn’t it. Life. I left school in 1971 with a handful of qualifications and no clue what to do with them. I was interested in languages, and enrolled in at Birkbeck College (I think it was) to do a translators course but this was before the Common Market so there wasn’t much future in it so I never started the course. There were jobs growing on trees and I was offered lots of really boring stuff. I eventually took a job with the Midland Bank and hated it and left after a year when my mum died, and finally managed to get to university but hated that too (lonely) so I abandoned it and married my childhood boyfriend. That lasted long enough to get me two children!

You are correct american robins are different. The breast is a little more orange and the backs are dark gray.. I know that because my parents being British. We had books from canada as we lived in vancouver Which had a lot of British people in it. When it was a commonwealth and I was born in england and the robins were depicted differently than the american books. Then if you look it up the american robins don't look like red robins. I figured that out as a kid we don't have really red breasted robins here.

After my long comment how as kids learn to draw was. My father is to schedule the time. So we were had a pencil, one making pictures since we were kids. And then just got better at it. So for me turning pencil sketches into water color was my favorite thing. People tell me to do oil painting Which I never have. Because I can't take paint to paper without a little bit of a sketch. I don't know how people do that and make it look Real. I have to pencil schedge first. I used to feel like a failure, but people told me. Water colors are the hardest and oils you can change your mistakes. I tried it crilixon that was awful I hated A cryptic paint to me. There is no chance to depth or making the paint look different. If I was to do anything else. I would do the oils, but i've never had to desire all my life, And i've also used pen and ink for sketching and with water colors.. But my favorite was always pencil sketching.
