  • For number thirteen in our series of watercolor Christmas card tutorials for 2023 I'm joining in with a trend: easy tree baubles painted by stamping a circle and letting the paint flow where it wants! This one is great fun and absolutely perfect for children (young and old!). We'll be uploading a new tutorial every day in November, and they will all be quick, simple and easy-to-do so you can fit them into spare moments or sit down with the kids or grandkids to enjoy a happy time together getting in the festive mood.

I figure the paint is nontoxic, so I’ve drunk the coffee after dunking the paintbrush into it.

Last night, I attempted my first ever landscape. My first thought was about all the mistakes I'd made; then my second was "oooh, look, I painted a landscape!" I'm cultivating the second part, lol
Even more, I've shown my paintings to my dearest friends, two of whom have their MFA. I have become fearless in my old age, and it's a novel and wonderful feeling indeed 😊

Diane, I have seen many tutorials for painting baubles, but none as unique and beautiful as these! I love how the addition of gold gives it a bronze type look. Very vintage! Since I am watching twice, I get to comment twice, yes? For one thing I get to tell you again how much I loved this one!! For another thing, I have seen another person using this “trick” but you actually do it much better…you chose cups that are quite thick and I think that is much better, and secondly you just put in quite a bit of water and don’t fuss and that really seems to work!! Love all the options though…tons of fun techniques to try!! Yay!!💕💕 P.S. please don’t drink the gold coffee no matter how pretty it looks!!🙃🙃🙃

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  9 месяцев назад +2

You are more than welcome to comment as many times as you like Donna! Especially when your comments are as nice as these ones! That’s a good point, you make about the thickness of the cups - I haven’t thought about it, but of course when someone mentioned they used cookie cutters and it didn’t work, the obvious reason is because the cookie cutters are very thin, and don’t hold much paint! I accidentally hit on something there. They really are great fun to paint - I wish I could think of another excuse to do them again!

I think what I enjoy and appreciate most about your style of work is how much you embrace your freedoms: freedom of colors, of movement, of expression...and not adhering to any specific ideals or principals. You make it okay to be ourselves. It's something I have always believed in...and it's frustrating when I find myself trying to follow some sort of rules on how to do things in life. Thank you!

Great idea of putting paint on the circular container and then stamping onto the paper! 👍 I love that instead of painting a circle and filling it in. Oh so glad you also rinse your brush in coffee. 😂😂 I cracked when you did that! I’ve also ruined a beautiful glass of scotch by taking my drink to my paint table! I’m learning not to do that, but I do accidentally sit it down when I’m so focused on what I’m doing. Anyway, love the Christmas balls and I’m going to make a card using this technique. I’m so exact and precise with almost everything I paint and this will help me let the water dictate the outcome by not forming perfectly shaped balls. So glad you fed the neighbors pig! Perhaps piggy could come to your property! 🐖
Thank you for this video and have a very happy Thanksgiving! 🍽 🦃

Hi Sharon and thanks for your lovely comment! If you really want to loosen up your style try painting without doing a sketch first, using the brush to draw with really, and also hold the brush well back from the business end so you have to give up fine control. And drink your Scotch before you start. That’ll work wonders! LOL!

So I’ve just had a brain wave… I’ve ordered edible gold powder from Amazon! They recommend it especially for drinks, but also for other foods that you would like to be golden! I thought that I could have a little gathering and we can all bring our iPads, put on your video, paint lovely baubles and drink golden coffee!! What do you think? You may have started something! I may need to decorate the coffee cups so that they don’t accidentally mix in the paint, but we can figure that out and how fun! Everyone wants to paint and we can all do baubles your way, right!?😂🎉😅

I’ve done the coffee rinse, but thankfully haven’t had a drink of rinse water. yet.

What fun! If Uniball white gel pen is not as good as their gold, which other brand do you prefer?

I think the Artistro paint pen is a bit better, this one: Artistro White Paint Pens amzn.to/3qjSxCe

It came out great! I tried doing this with cookie cutters but it didn't work out too well. I had to LOL about dipping your brush in your coffee. I haven't done that, but I HAVE taken a sip of my paint water! Is your neighbor really going to eat the poor little pig?

I think cookie cutters are probably too thin to hold the paint to make the imprint work. The cups I used all have quite thick rims. It’s a very fun technique. I could do it all day!

Diane, I see you have a shaving brush next to your painting, is that what you used to remove the salt? And what kind of salt did you use?

I’m buying my adult daughter watercolor paint set, paper, and brushes for Christmas. I don’t want to spend a fortune because I’m not sure she will use them. Any suggestions?

She’ll love the Meeden products. Go to tinyurl.com/meeden-homepage and put DIANE10 in at the checkout for a 10% discount. They have good prices and great quality.

    Why Hot Press now?

Hot press paper works better for the technique. I am using for this video but it isn’t essential. You could just as easily use cold press. I like the Meeden hot press because it’s not very smooth and is suited to my techniques.
