Dude... love your vids David, not only was this video helpful to you and your journey man... it helps us out to with as much information as possible to maintain as a musician trying to make it out in this harsh world! Appreciate it.
Try searching up rentable rehearsal places in your area. Some guitar centers offer rehearsal spaces to rent, but I don't believe they let you leave your stuff in it, from what I've seen you can choose different rooms with PA's, drum sets, pianos (electric of course), etc.
Love your channel and I'm enjoying watching your journey. Check out Carter McLean's playing. If you haven't already, super organic, groove oriented.. I think with your talent if you show that side of you. The sky is the limit.. Best to you
New sub here, novice drummer. Are those badass fills around 12:16 32nd notes or 16th note triplets? Something else? Is there a simple lesson/explanation for what's going on there so I can practice? Little too fast too see/hear what's happening for me.
I'm a guitar player but love watching your video's Great Job! Hope you do everything you set out to do. One question I have. In the end with the drum *battles* , is that kind of like shredding on a guitar? It's impressive but not really musical? Or is there more to it than what a non drum player might miss?
nah you're pretty right. Impressive speed and coordination, but nothing you could really apply outside of the drum-sheds. It's basically all the notes with none of the dynamics, so people at the weddings and gala dinners the working drummer usually plays won't really be happy to hear that stuff ;)
I see it as really pushing the boundaries of music actually 😂. It’s like pushing our minds beyond the normal things we are exposed to hearing on a day to day basis. It may not sound like much or it can come off as noise to many, but to me, I’ve gotten to the point where my ears can keep up with the patterns and phrasing’s these cats are putting together, which what they are doing is a god send and would require me Years and years of practice to ever be able to have a library of patterns and let alone be able to interweave them together to speak this insane language that the .1% of drummers in the world are actually able to speak. Although in this setting it’s fun to push the boundaries of speed because drummers don’t often get to apply this kind of speed on a normal gig, but that’s what makes this fun! It’s a setting where we can have fun 😂. And that doesn’t mean we would just rip this on a gig! Everyone in that room has been taught when the right place to play vs. the right time to lay it down is. And the cats in this room include Andy Prado of Sabrina Claudio and Darion Ja’von who is the MD and drummer for Ne-Yo. So these guys know how to play on gig vs. a shed 😅. I’m not really sure how to relate this all to guitars, but in drum world, I believe many of us have a fascination of rhythm and patterns. That’s what it is for me anyways 💁🏻. So like when I listen to Shariq and Andy play I don’t hear noise, I hear the insane group of 7’s they are playing over 32nd notes around the kit and how they may go between groups of 5’s and interweave these odd patterns around the various layers of subdivisions pushing beyond just 8th notes, triplets, 16ths, etc... but pushing beyond into worlds that have yet to be fully explored. As a drummer, rhythms, patterns, subdivisions, modulation, implied modulation, polyrhythms, polymeters, and everything else used to push the boundaries of this instrument is what lights a fire in my chest 😅. So to me, it’s much more than non-musical noise 😅. And all the patterns you hear go on can definitely be applied in any context, and that’s the greatest thing. You may not expect me to play groups of 5’s or 7’s on a Bruno Mars song, but I’ve done it, and I made sure to make it work and fit tastefully in the situation I was thrown in 💁🏻.
@@DavidColaDrums That's the great thing about music. There is always a next step to work on. Even as good as you guys are. Fun to watch that journey. I'd invite you over for a Gig but South Carolina might be a bit of a drive for ya :)
I’m a PR major and Photo minor with one more year left in college, but my goal is to play drums full time. E-man frickin spoke to my soul; that’s the attitude that I want to have
How did y'all get insane chops is it hours of shedding and practicing g random things at Berklee or is there an exercise or something plz reply. Thx for the vid hope LA is great!!
Samay Nothing is overnight; Start from scratch and work everyday until you get there. Work with different stickings, rudiments, and warmups which will help build hand speed. Never give up.
@@DavidColaDrums Yeah, so....drink on the down beat instead of the up beat? You got drinking lick like you got drum licks, man! NOICE!!! Thanks for the video!
You have to know how to use something, if you have it. I wish I had an ableton. I see musicians using them more and more, when they do twitch streams, improvising music.
Hey, we need to talk. Listen to Eman's advice of playing groove only. Not the most jawdropping videos, but that's how you get the gig. Those drum jams are hard to listen to. Possibly the most unmusical playing ever, but impressive, and those guys are doing you no service. They're not the ones hiring you for shows and they promote/pressure you into thinking that good drumming=chop chop chops.
@@xxxpr0gamer69xxx3 I've seen them all actually. And David is a great player, he even studied with my good friend James Murphy. But his groove needs full attention and that's what Eman said. Chop videos are fun and excite the status quo player, but he's trying to make it in a cutthroat city, so meaningful advice is way more valuable. We can be supportive and critical at the same time. That's how we grow as players.
Man this sheds ara as impressive as they are unmusical... it has become so boring and pointless... but I really like your channel and all the information you share with us tks

Where does one find a space like this?
Not where I live : (

Man awesome guys shedding like pro. I hope you could do like ask andy prado / shariq tucker, etc about how to like getting creative of chops.
Great Subway analogy! Very interesting interview.

Carter McLean is a fantastic groove player, but the complete opposite type of drumming from whatever kind of insanity is happening at 14:13.
I still love that blue set. Beautiful color
How much are you paying?
A new rehearsal space (in Chicago, IL) costs $375/mo and I imagine it may be more expensive in LA and NY? Not sure tho haha

Great advice, take anything & everything!

I thought I could play the drums a bit......apparently not. ;(
I've never heard of "a lock out" is it just sound proof rooms?
No. It is sadly related to coronavirus. ;-p
dang son!! hands!!!

Great vid!!! What kind of light are you using at the end of the video, it’s centered on your drums?
13:53 i like the chon music man. water slide is a dope song
Darion in tha house!!! It's been ages!
What's a lock out?
In the UK we call it a 'lock up'. A secure rented storage and rehearsal space.
Oh ok thank you
That is a cool idea.
I dont think they are in the area of the US I am.
11:40 glad to see steve-o fully recovered.
Great advice!
Love your channel bro
Just wondering how you drum so fast. Any advice?

Sand Man thanks a lot. I will try to practice the rudiments and stickings.
Samay Keep at it!
What on earth is a "Lock Out"?
Vinny Osborne a rehearsal space
Fabrizio kills!
Love the channel. but I drink each time you say "yeah, so..." and I am almost too drunk to type this. :D
Tech Gorilla i think you’d be more drunk if you drank on “so yeah” 😏
