She looks like the girl next door AND a goddess, but I love how she has dark circles in some pictures - a FAR cry from the cartoonish Instagram faces now (too perfect to be human).
It's so refreshing to know that Jean was a down-to-earth person underneath the fake glamour facade. She knew the modeling scene was shallow, overrated, and filled with not so good people. She has been leading her best life out of the spotlight since the early 70s. Good for her.

Thank you for a fine tribute! As a former retired NYC fashion illustrator in the late 1960s and 70s I remember Jean so well in the fashion mags and on the covers. I remember many of these photos! Baily went on to marry the beautiful iconic French actress Catherine Deneuve but they divorced after five years. Actually, one of the first super models was red haired American model Suzy Parker in the 1950s and 60s who modeled for Revlon and became a film actress as well and starred in the movie, "The Best of Everything". She died at age 70. Read that Shrimpton ran a B & B with her husband as well! She was right about the fashion world, very shallow and phony.Why I eventually left to marry, raise a family and became a floral designer and have my own art business and became a painter.
I can’t get over her beautiful wardrobe, most of which would still be considered timeless. I believe I heard a story she told about Terence Stamp. She awoke in the middle of the night to discover he had gotten out of bed, only to find him sitting in front of a mirror staring at himself. He was so in love with his own reflection.
I met Jean when I was a teenager. We talked about her movie Privilege, and I found a very down to earth, modest, intelligent young woman. She told me that she was never all that gorgeous, but she photographed beautifully. Wow, most super models are known to be conceited, nasty pieces of work. Not Jean. It never went to her head.
Glad she saw herself and this world realistically and got out of the matrix before it messed her up. Authenticity is the magic word. God bless her and her family.

The, 'Shrimp,' was so beautiful. I remember reading interview with her where she felt very much taken advantage of by David Bailey. That their financial agreement had benefited him far more than her. And though she was much happier outside of the limelight, she still had to earn a living. 😥
From Terence Wise in UK...........I did read somewhere that David Bailey once said he regretted parting with Jean and so he should.I was 18 years old in 1960 I thought then and still do that she was the most lovely young woman I ever saw.

I have vivid memories of the early 60s and the fashion industry. I remember reading about Jean Shrimpton in mu grandmother's Ladies Home Journal. The mini skirt, as well as women's pantsuits, caused a world-wide uproar. Women could not wear pantsuits to certain restaurants. We couldn't wear pants to work in certain industries. Mini skirts definitely were not allowed in the work place. Jean Shrimpton was probably the most beautiful woman in the world to me. Every time I saw an article about her I devoured it. I'm glad to see this video and know that she is living a normal, happy life.
She was an exquisite beauty, and classy and dignified to boot. I can't think of a single "super model" who has followed who can hold a candle to her. Again, it's not just the extraordinary beauty but the character, how she projected and conducted herself.
Aside from Jean Shrimpton, another model I idolized in the 60s & 70s was Karen Graham who was the Estée Lauder model. Karen stepped away from the camera and is a world-class fly fisherwoman! I respect and admire both of these women for staying true to themselves and now allowing themselves to get swept up in and lost in the superficiality of fashion, celebrity, etc. Very well done, Karine.

Jean will likely not remember this. I was about 21 or 22 at the time (Jean and I are approximately the same age), and it is not terribly unusual to run into or pass celebs on the streets. It was the weekend and I decided to go into a museum. I forgot which one now, but it was just a spur of the moment thing. As I entered, there was Jean Shrimpton. I wasn't sure if it was really Jean, so I tentatively asked, "are you Jean Shrimpton?" The beautiful girl turned to me, eyes wide, and said "yes!" I was so stunned that I couldn't say much of anything. She was perhaps the most exquisite person I had ever seen before or since. I have seen many models and celebs, and they look nothing like their photos, or what you might see in film. Jean was that overused description of "luminous." Huge sapphire eyes, English rose skin without makeup, brown hair hanging straight. A light flowered summer dress just skimmed her long body. I might be crazy, but it looked like she was open to having a chat, but I was far too stunned to say any more and just muttered something I have since forgotten. But I have never forgotten her. Besides her obvious beauty, she radiates something indefinable and what is mostly lost in today's world. I have since read a quote from her: "Everything about modern life terrifies me." I agree lovely Jean, but we lived in the best time possible, even with all its twists and turns. I am glad I am not being born into this time.
My mother, who was 40 in August 1965, was pregnant, wearing dresses, just like Shrimpton. She always made her own clothes, and no one even knew she was pregnant. In fact, the day my baby brother was born, the laundry man, who did my father's shirts, noticed the same thing I did, when I opened my eyes that morning, "no coffee smell". When I explained that she was in hospital, and had given birth, just a few hours, earlier, he got mad at me, and told me I should never lie, and discredit my mother like that, but I stood my ground, as I was far from a moron, even at 8. I'd already plotted exactly what I would dedicate my life to being, and have done it. My mother handed down her sense of style, although, at 40, and after having 6 children, over a 20-year period, she could still attract stares, in a way I was never comfortable with. My dear Ma, as I affectionately called her, was super talented with creating clothing that had women all thinking she was shopping at boutiques. She found this hysterically funny. When I was asked to model, at age 19, I did it, because of her excitement. I did it for her, not myself, as I'd made my choice , 11 years earlier, but I'm glad I did it, as she would be gone, months later.

I think this is a good lesson for wannabes who want to be famous. Sometimes for your sanity it's best not to go down that route, but to live your best life without the glitz and so called glamour. I have utter respect for this beautiful woman, she knew her own mind and left!
I'm an Aussie, I read the story of Jean Shrimpton, at the Melbourne Cup. There is a dress standard for the Members, but far everyone else these days, they dress up in different outfits. I can imagine the ladies tut-tuts, lol. What a beautiful and intelligent lady.
Terrance Stamp always looked like he was hungover or drunk. Don't know what Jean ever saw in him, they seemed such polar opposites. Having said that, he was perfectly characterized in his role with Julie Christie in Far From the Maddening Crowd opposite Peter Finch.

When I was a young woman in my teens and early twenties in the early 60's Jean Shrimpton was my idol. I had my hair like her, dressed as best I could like her, worn eyelashes like her. She was to me the ultimate female. So beautiful. And she had a "nice" face, meaning not spoiled or privileged. Just loved her so happy to see this video and see she is happy in Cornwall.
The clothes - free - yet so elegant - how different from today’s fashion of skin-tight leggings and little else- a vulgarity totally unsuited to the female form. As for Shrimpton - she was absolutely gorgeous!
If the fashionable conservative women of that day, saw what we do in this day, they would faint straight away and have a permanent look of shock for several hours maybe days before they could wrap their head around it😂 And always nice to see, especially women survive the insanity, and have the life they crave.❤

My mother is from Europe and always talked about the beautiful Jean Shrimpton. I like about this Retrospective is the way you talk about her outlook, and who she was as a person rather than what she looked like, even though that was clearly an important part of her life. I think the reason she was so captivating is because she was interesting as well as beautiful. She photographed so exquisitely well because there was something behind her eyes.

I remember as a young teen in the 60's I thought this woman was a Goddess. I had never seen anybody anywhere more beautiful, even those famous Hollywood stunners like Marilynn Monroe and Lana Turner couldn't hold a candle to her. I had no idea she was so humble and grounded. I remember so well the outrage that the "mini dress" caused. I was fourteen at the time and now find it hard to believe that it is nigh on sixty years ago. SIXTY! Btw, it wasn't just the antique shop in Cornwall she bought but also an hotel (boutique of course) which she has sold very recently.

I might be crazy, but it looked like she was open to having a chat, but I was far too stunned to say any more and just muttered something I have since forgotten. But I have never forgotten her. Besides her obvious beauty, she radiates something indefinable and what is mostly lost in today's world. I have since read a quote from her: "Everything about modern life terrifies me." I agree lovely Jean, but we lived in the best time possible, even with all its twists and turns. I am glad I am not being born into this time.
My mother, who was 40 in August 1965, was pregnant, wearing dresses, just like Shrimpton. She always made her own clothes, and no one even knew she was pregnant. In fact, the day my baby brother was born, the laundry man, who did my father's shirts, noticed the same thing I did, when I opened my eyes that morning, "no coffee smell". When I explained that she was in hospital, and had given birth, just a few hours, earlier, he got mad at me, and told me I should never lie, and discredit my mother like that, but I stood my ground, as I was far from a moron, even at 8. I'd already plotted exactly what I would dedicate my life to being, and have done it. My mother handed down her sense of style, although, at 40, and after having 6 children, over a 20-year period, she could still attract stares, in a way I was never comfortable with. My dear Ma, as I affectionately called her, was super talented with creating clothing that had women all thinking she was shopping at boutiques. She found this hysterically funny. When I was asked to model, at age 19, I did it, because of her excitement. I did it for her, not myself, as I'd made my choice , 11 years earlier, but I'm glad I did it, as she would be gone, months later.

I think this is a good lesson for wannabes who want to be famous. Sometimes for your sanity it's best not to go down that route, but to live your best life without the glitz and so called glamour. I have utter respect for this beautiful woman, she knew her own mind and left!

I'm an Aussie, I read the story of Jean Shrimpton, at the Melbourne Cup. There is a dress standard for the Members, but far everyone else these days, they dress up in different outfits. I can imagine the ladies tut-tuts, lol. What a beautiful and intelligent lady.
Terrance Stamp always looked like he was hungover or drunk. Don't know what Jean ever saw in him, they seemed such polar opposites.
Having said that, he was perfectly characterized in his role with Julie Christie in Far From the Maddening Crowd opposite Peter Finch.

When I was a young woman in my teens and early twenties in the early 60's Jean Shrimpton was my idol. I had my hair like her, dressed as best I could like her, worn eyelashes like her. She was to me the ultimate female. So beautiful. And she had a "nice" face, meaning not spoiled or privileged. Just loved her so happy to see this video and see she is happy in Cornwall.
She is still my favorite model of all time, there is no one like the Shrimp.
The clothes - free - yet so elegant - how different from today’s fashion of skin-tight leggings and little else- a vulgarity totally unsuited to the female form. As for Shrimpton - she was absolutely gorgeous!
If the fashionable conservative women of that day, saw what we do in this day, they would faint straight away and have a permanent look of shock for several hours maybe days before they could wrap their head around it😂
And always nice to see, especially women survive the insanity, and have the life they crave.❤

Thank you so much for this one! She was slightly before my time, but all the beauty books that I grew up with featured pictures of her. My mother is from Europe and always talked about the beautiful Jean Shrimpton. I like about this Retrospective is the way you talk about her outlook, and who she was as a person rather than what she looked like, even though that was clearly an important part of her life. I think the reason she was so captivating is because she was interesting as well as beautiful. She photographed so exquisitely well because there was something behind her eyes.

Sorry to hear that. Reportedly, he is not always a nice person. He has treated some women badly. He has shown misogyny. He reportedly ran off and sex with another woman on his honeymoon. His then wife eventually divorced him. Crazy.

I remember as a young teen in the 60's I thought this woman was a Goddess. I had never seen anybody anywhere more beautiful, even those famous Hollywood stunners like Marilynn Monroe and Lana Turner couldn't hold a candle to her. I had no idea she was so humble and grounded. Wow, the full package, that's for sure. , and yes, she was the template for so much that came after her, including the very standard that came to be regarded ,..... AS THE PERFECT MODEL.

I remember so well the outrage that the "mini dress" caused. I was fourteen at the time and now find it hard to believe that it is nigh on sixty years ago. SIXTY! Btw, it wasn't just the antique shop in Cornwall she bought but also an hotel (boutique of course) which she has sold very recently.
