weve Got Mrs Thatcher to thank for sodding it all up in the early 1980s, FM was allocated to flying models only, Now its used in submarines and model boats because 2.4ghz doesnt work under water.
I love the 2.4 Ghz Citronix Pulse E radios they are cheap and cheerful and very locked in for car use just about as far as the eye can see even though thre doesnt seem to be any range details on them 4 AA batteries in the TX last forever. Still have my Futaba FM radio gear for my Sailing yachts and a couple of futaba AM sets which are rarely used these days, we also had to avoid yellow, brown and orange crystals on the Am radios in the olden days and use a peg board on site as with FM to denote who was using a specific channel whlist flying or driving so that no one interfeared with each others frequency and crashed, with the addition of 2.4ghz thwe old pegboards dissapeared forever and everyone could fly or drive at the same time.

I still use the original transmitter that came with my Savage 25. For no other reason than it still works perfectly fine. Out of my 30 something RC's, that's the only I have that still uses AM frequency and crystals. Never thought about replacing it, no reason to.

Oh, respectfully disagree. I have tried to use vintage receivers in the AM band and I couldn’t even get 20-30ft from the car before it lost signal and started twitching. 2.4 is a must unless you want to experience a horrendous crash or runaway car.

If you have a brand new 27mhz am sure go for it. But not a lot of "brand new" or "mint condition" are left out there. Same deal as small block .12 nitro engines. If you have it you are set. If you don't, well good luck fishing one out.

Using a am radio is a bad idea, you're just asking for a runaway.you can get a 2.4 gig for about 40 dollars these days.

I believe in the USA AM has always been the CB radio frequency, yet it is highly illegal here in the UK since the end of the 1970s when it was given to the emergency services for their use until digital radios arrived.
