  • The AJ16 4.0 litre engine is now complete - time to get a follow on update from Part 3 when Tom and James last discussed the engine.
The clutch has been installed and Tom is feeing confident that with the time and money spent on the engine that ‪@AutoalexCars‬ & ‘Jimmy Jag’ won’t be able to keep up with the XJC ‘RRRRRRRRR’.
They touch on the subject of weight and James discovers that there could be an issue with the painting on of the cam cover!

Fascinating project. I appreciate your attention to detail! Motivation to get cracking on my current reassembly… 1958 Morris 1000, ex my Grandmother.

James is right, I noticed the wrong colour immediately but I also agree, if you have the paint why not use it!

Good to hear James isn’t the only one who notices these sort of things and that you also see the logical explanation of using paint we already had! 🤣👍

You can easily paint raised letters without masking if you roll up a paper towel, fold it in half and wrap a bit of tape around it near the folded end to form a bulb shape. Then dip that end into the paint and then press the towel onto the lettering to transfer the paint.

Its not often i laugh out loud while watching the tube, but this episode was just filled with gems.
I guess you are upgrading the charge cooler pump to the larger Bosch pump instead of the stock one? thats a nobrainer to keep the temps down.

Hi Tom, greetings from Austria! What a great project! I swapped my (kingfisher blue) XJR to manual - still not finished completely. Went also the route of getting a XJ40 fly wheel and a more civil clutch. The paint of the engine - it's great. If you don't like the color, just wait a bit. Those stupid cam covers can't be painted anyway. The magnesium alloy is full of casting faults and it will bubble in no time and change the color to pink. I was thinking of sending you a replacement for the black gaiter hose from the intake - which collapses with age - we have a kit for that - but I think it will be obsolete with your intake. I quite like that idea if yours. Did you think of porting the SC? Mine is ported - but tbh I have no clue if this is of any real benefit. I was done by some company in the US by the previous owner. What is your take on that? And by the way: Naughty to scrap one of the super rare manual XJR6! There are estimated 150 left globally. My records say 33 on the road in the UK and 39 SORN. I have also another genuine manual XJR6 (BRG) tucked away in some barn - to be found later. I had bought it for the gearbox before I realized how rare they are. This was the only genuine Austrian registered manual XJR6 I have come across in the past 10 years, Chris

Tom doing his Harry Enfield impression: I’ve got a bigger output than you 😂. A Jen of an engine. Are you doing anything with the suspension? Great video chaps.

Great build but a wee bit too much time on the paint match, it’s Toms car and he can paint it whatever he likes as long as it blows the doors off the opposition especially Mike 👍🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Great set of videos this, maybe i missed it but did anyone ever say what the weight of the new engine and gearbox was?
Im interested in doing the same kind of swap on an old xk to save weight/ gain power and reliability

How thoroughly did you have to refinish that cam cover? I know the magnesium can be troublesome to work with.
