Great review on the standers Kevin, I'm in the market for a 48"-54" deck. I've looked at the V-Ride, Bad Boy and Ferris. All are nice machines but I'm wondering if the pumps and wheel motors in the Scag will provide better longevity versus the integrated transmissions. I'm a home owner cutting 1.5 acres and want a machine that will out last me. The only shortcoming I see/feel with the Scag is the foot platform feels like my toes are pointed down, but I believe relocating the pucks further back under the platform may resolve the issue. I'm 6'-2" and 280 lbs. and am surprised that I don't flatten the platform to a horizontal position. The Ferris Z2/Z3 and Bad Boy Revolt feel flat when I stand on their platforms. Thanks for all the time and effort you put forth, God Bless you and yours.
John - the integrated transaxles are rated for 1500hr life while separate pump and wheel motors are rated at 2000 hours. On a 52/54” mower any FX or Vanguard engine is rated for 2000 hours and a FS or FT Kawasaki are closer to 1500hr rating. Based on your 1.5ac you fall into the “average homeowner” type use, which will be about 50hr/yr. The honest answer here (from a dealer) is… buy the mower you like best from the dealer you like best whom you feel like will support you. Any stander based on your usage is a 30-40 year mower and you’ll never hit the lifecycle of any component. Statistically you’ll get rid of the mower due to age in years and parts becoming obsolete at some point before the mower actually ever wears out.
Thank you Michael, I very much appreciate the insight. I currently have a 1996 Simplicity Broadmoor with a 14 H.P. Vanguard. The mower has been stellar, I just replaced all 4 tires 2 years ago and still have the original spindles on the deck. It's getting tired and the deck is starting to rust through. The standers are very appealing to me and I've been considering one for the last 2 years. Your information has shed new light on my outlook. I want to buy one mower for the rest of my life, and may be moving to a larger property within the next 3 years (optimally 50 acres or more with 3 acre lawn). With that being said I know my current lawn doesn't require a commercial machine, but I'd like to be prepared should my plans come to fruition. Looking at the makes I mentioned in my original entry and looking at the variables it seems to me that the motor, transmissions and deck build (thicknesd) are the major components. The Bad Boy Revolt seems to be the best bang for the buck at least for my use. I do have a full service dealer within 30 minutes of my home. The Kawasaki FX carburetorated motor is also plenty good for my purpose? The deck thickness is another positive trait along with the cut quality from what I can tell. Thanks for your comment and insight! 👍🏼
Here’s my situation, I don’t have much yard, total of 3/4 an acre but I have a huge hill, enough that it will pull the front wheels on zero turn and I can’t go down the hill because it makes it smoke really bad. Do you think a stand on would be better?
