Re-watching this video this morning, there are a few small things on this painting that I am going to change. First, where the dark tree line meets the field, I will slightly darken the field and secondly, I may add a very small mountain in the background on the left and possibly even add a tiny bit of detail on the closest ones. What a thoughtful gift! It looks like a real artist's tool, that. I can imagine finding a quiet spot by a riverbank, setting up a folding chair and a thermos of tea, then going to town with the watercolors.
The palette is super cool, what an awesome gift :)! I actually didn't notice the miscount, either, and I think it's good it was forced to be left in! It's helpful to see how you work thru those sort of things 😅 The QoR travel palette painting came out really beautiful. Love the depth you achieved!

I don't know how to stop the "receiving" part exactly, but I do feel a little bit of stress when I think about all the palettes I have and how many are not being used regularly. I also get a large sense of happiness when I think of them, too, so there's that! 😂
I know those weren't the colors you would have gone with if you had counted 15 from the start, but they are very nice together. That wooden palette looks nice and solid, I bet it'll be amazing for on the go. The 'test' painting you did was so pretty. I love how it came out.
Thanks, T. I think you're right - the colors will all work out nicely together. Wishing I had chosen the Raw Umber instead of the Van Dyke Brown because it's so similar to the Burnt Sienna, but at least I have the Indigo to darken colors up a bit. This'll be fun to try out on my travels. 🙂
QOR are great för mini palettes. They last a long time because they are so pigmented. That wooden palette is nice! Fun with a palette that is a bit different from the ordinary palettes!
Cool landscape with QoR, which I do love using but not as much as my Sennelier. 😃🤩🥰 So do you still use the 15 well magnetic traveling palette? I did a DIY with plastic milk carton caps and magnetic strips as a palette… it was fun creating and gifting to a friend my QoR paints. Watercolor tubes last forever and go a long way. TFS! 😃👍🏾🥰

I haven’t decided which brand of colors to use in it (I have Daniel Smith and Winsor Newton, too). However after seeing you fill yours with QoR, im thinking im going to do the same! Yes, I think QoR is a good choice for the little magnetic palette because the paint payload is so great! You'll have to tell me what you finally decide to put in yours and how it goes!
The pallete looks exclusive, but when i try water color i never could be that discipline in using palete, soon it will be messy with all color mixed to be the same color 😁👍👍👍❤
I'm really glad you kept the mistake in this video, because I do that sort of thing ALL the time (especially when it comes to numbery things... ugh, artist brain!) It gave me a chuckle and made me feel a bit better about my own racing mind getting ahead of myself. I love these wooden pallets and it's so cool your friends made you this one! That palette is great and looks so professional. Some people are gifted wood crafters. However, like you, I would probably have thought there were 18 pans. They are more common than 15. The painting was brilliant and the landscape looks like the Alps in Switzerland or France. I'm curious to see the used-up progress, Miranda. Have a fantastic weekend.

Your picture is beautiful! Yes, I realized you had to remove three paints and I knew you would realize it. But choosing what three to remove is tough! Well, when you run out of the paint that you wished you hadn't kept, you can replace it with one you do want. Sometimes when I can't laminate something, I use transparent strapping tape over the small thing I want laminated like small swatch cards. I think the tape is thinner than actual laminate and it works pretty well. I am looking forward to Tuesday's upload.
The first thing I did was counting the color wells, then I laughed so hard when you have miscounted them. 😂 I have seen others using such wooden palettes, but I do not find them practical, they take up too much space. My dream is still the Art Toolkit demi palette. Too bad the international shipping costs make them horribly expensive for me. 😔
I looked up that demi palette again to refresh my memory of what it looks like. I'm curious how it will work since it doesn't look like the lid goes flat where the mixing space is? I love the well shapes and sizes in it and how thin it is when it's closed. Plus it's beautiful. 😊
@@MirandaWatsonArt That's exactly what I desire to buy, yes. The lid can go flat just like business card holders. As my smallest "always in my bag" palette I use an eyeshade case with the six dots of primary colors inside and I mix in the lid. It's the size of the smaller mixing well in your wood palette. Totally works. I use it with a waterbrush. It's for sketching not for big paintings and a funny color mixing exercise every time I use it. The demi palette would definitely be an improvement. 😊 Not to mention that you can easily switch colors and take different limited palettes with you every time. You can also use a bigger pan as extra mixing space. They are magnetic too. And yes, I'm in the EU and the international shipping is very discouraging. 😕
Oh my goodness - your tiny palette sounds like so much fun. I wouldn't mind having a super-tiny palette and some sort of small sketchbook that would always fit in my very tiny purse. I'm going to have to look into that. They should really show on their website that the lid can go flat - what a relief! I love how you can swap the pans in and out so easily and all the different sizes. Really neat. Such a bummer about the shipping, though. Dang. :-(
@@MirandaWatsonArt I have friends in the US who usually (meaning when there's no pandemic) travel here a lot, so I'm not totally hopeless. 🙃 My smallest sketching kit is literally one plastic mechanical pencil with an eraser on the end, a fine liner, one small (koi) waterbrush, that eyeshadow palette with a clip and an A6 size sketchbook. They are all in a small IKEA VÄRLDENS pouch. 😎

I'm so impressed that they were able to recreate this palette - and they gave me one (made me feel super-special). I just love my QoR paints. It's hard to decide what to pull out and paint with each time, but I ALWAYS feel like using my QoRs. The number error cracked me up, lol.

QOR is quite expensive but I have a big 11 ml tube of Ultramarine Violet and I don't mind of it travels a lot in water. They are really fun to use. I just wish they are more affordable in europe, too. I was thinking of making my own wooden palette for a while... I just don't really know where to start. Maybe I should do some planning because I thought I would rather have an insert for half pans.
An insert for half pans would be a GREAT idea and I'd love to see it if you do end up making your own. Keep up posted! I'm glad you find QoR fun to use!

I just ordered a bunch more then I can pour my palette. I love it for abstracts, and collaborating with the paint. I also like my purple by the reds, so I just go red, purple, blue, green. Like the color wheel. Is there a reason you put the greens next to the reds in yours?
I usually go yellow to orange to red to purple to blue to green to brown, but the 3 across and 5 down kinda threw me for a loop on this one. I couldn't figure out how I'd want my paint organized, lol. I didn't have the right number of colors in each category to make it work out just right, so I ended up doing it this way. Thanks for the tip on QoR paints - hopefully someone took advantage of the sale!
I admit I definitely almost ordered one of those from Etsy, but I think they would get in my way because I like to do full spreads! I am even more excited to try my Qor paints now. I plan on putting them in a travel palette, so we'll see how that goes!! I am obsessed with the color indigo. I have a handmade one from Artistic Isle and it's probably my favorite paint. Thank you for the video, I'm excited to see what you do next!! I love the faded mountains in the background of this piece. Also, maybe you could take a sepia paint or marker and subtly hit some darker values on that mountain on the palette? Just a thought. Have a great day!
It's great that you are thinking about the usability of an item before you decide to purchase it . Really hoping you'll video your QoR palette process! I also love Indigo - it's a color I tend to always go for in my mixes and by itself. I do want to adjust the mountains a bit. Thanks, Annie!
I'm guessing that since many commercial palettes and paint sets come in multiples of 6 (6, 12, 18, 24, etc.), when you saw three rows, the subconscious automatically went to "18". I know mine kept trying to after my recent purchase of a 15-well mini-palette, and I'm the one who made the purchase! =l= I have a number of the wooden palettes in my Etsy Favorites list, but haven't quite worked up to actually purchasing one yet. Partly because there are so many varieties to choose from. They go from a small hunk of wood with a few holes for paint to some pretty intense full pochade boxes. Too many choices, and I'm still a bit too new at this particular medium to make what I feel is an informed choice... yet. 3D printed... Okay, I'll stop putting up the name of the Etsy shop, I ramble about it enough on so many channels that I think I have given the impression I'm the seller. I'm not - but when I really like something, I tend to gush about it. A lot. Maybe even too much. Sorry? Still, I love the four I have from that store, in part because of how small they are. I can easily tuck one into my day bag. Since I also have a 3D printer of my own (I have an issue with hoarding skills... and the tools that go with them), I also made a few palettes that are even smaller - about 1" x 2.5". I made it as a design exercise... and to hold a set of mini pans that hold a set of paints that I picked up on a lark... and found I really liked. It's tiny and cute... but... it's _tiny_. I did make two mixing wells in the lid, but they're so small that I had to design and print an additional tray as an additional mixing space. Still, it was a fun exercise, and it gave me an even greater appreciation for those who actually do such things for a living. Won't ramble too much longer, I promise. I haven't tried Qor yet... I _almost_ picked up one of the basics sets when I stumbled into Guiry's today (I had to go through the parking lot to get to the gas station, honest!), but considering that I've picked up a lot of new colors recently already, so I should probably use and get comfortable with some of those before I pick up even more. So I managed to walk out with just paper instead.
Good point, Mitzi! Is the Etsy shop you're talking about Shawns3DPrints? I'd love to go take a look. My son has a 3D printer and I never even thought about trying to use it like that. It's awesome that you are using it. I have no idea how to use my son's printer, but my background is computer engineering, so I'm sure I can figure it out eventually. So cool! Impressive that you were able to walk out of the art store with just paper! QoR someday...
@@MirandaWatsonArt I have a few of his pieces on my favorites list, but the one I'm talking about is actually ArtstoEmbers. The owner Zak, is a great guy to work with. I really enjoy my 3D printer, and the software side is pretty easy to work out. It's the mechanical side - the tuning and tweaking of the machine itself that has been my main headache. The machines are getting better, though, which is good, because once you understand the quirks they can be very useful. When I got back from the aforementioned shopping trip, I found that one set of paints I had ordered had come in. They were in half pans, but so gloriously over-filled that I was a little afraid to put them into a palette for fear of not being able to close it, so I opted to shift them into full pans. Except that I had five half pans of paint and three empty full pans. No problem. Go to my computer, pull up a file, run it through the prep software (slicing), save to an SD card, take it to the printer, turn on, select the file, and go. Twenty minutes later, come back to the printer, pull off the newly printed full pan... Change the filament from grey to white (oops?), print the second. Viola! Exactly what I needed, and in less time than it would have taken to get to the nearest art store in Parker. Better still, now that I have that sliced file saved, the next time I need more full pans, I can skip the first part and go straight to the printer. Eh, I'm babbling again, so I'll limit myself to only one other thing... designing simple things isn't that hard to do either. You know how in the video you had some possible concerns with the paint being directly in the wood? Measure the diameter and depth, and make a simple cylinder in any basic modeling software. There are even free online options like Tinkercad. Run the resulting file from that through your slicer in "Vase Mode/Spiralize" (or settings to match) and boom, now you have a pan custom made for your custom palette! ((Brief interlude where I yell at my brain for suggesting yet another subject option for the channel I keep not having time to start in its original subject.)) Okay, I'm done now, I promise! Have a great day, and if you have the spare time, check out some of the art tools and other fun that can be done with a 3D printer. Fair warning, though... it's possibly as addicting as any other creative skill.

The mention of Guiry's might have been the only thing that might have been an indicator, as I think they're only in Colorado at the moment. And I've actually had plans for a channel, focusing on my polymer clay sculpting... but keep having chaos happen - especially this year! The current round is having to transform my living room from the junk/storage room its been for the last few years into a spare bedroom for some friends to say while they get back on their feet. Since I'm in terrible shape it's being done in stages - work until the body yells at me, watch a video while recovering, go back and work until I have to stop again. Despite the stop-and-go pace, I've gotten an amazing amount done. As always, though, there is still so much to do before they get here... Thursday morning. And on that note, once more into the breach! Oh, and what type of printer does he have? Both of mine are Ender 3 varieties.
@@PhoenyxAshe His printer is an Ender 3 as well. I bought my Golden Retriever in Parker about 13-1/2 years ago. She's still going strong for the most part. I understand on the clearing of spaces - I have a calendar reminder on my phone that says I have to do 15 minutes of emptying boxes every single day. Ugh. But that usually almost always ends up in one less box every single day, lol. It's working. Good luck with your Thursday deadline!
beautiful palette, but not enough mixing space for me. i think i would rather have less colours and more mixing space than vice versa. if they lost 3-6 colours and added an extra mixing well i'd definitely be tempted.

Anyone interested and who is disappointed when A GALLO a family owned handmade small bath watercolor company in Italy they sell out within hours usually one hour , Jackson’s is now carrying them and they’re on sale still a little expensive but from what I’ve seen on many you tube channels, are gorgeous most one pigment , when people get the email they won’t last long I got 10x83$ usd you would never get so many for that price if u even get them on their website they sell out within hours

Oh my goodness - your tiny palette sounds like so much fun. I wouldn't mind having a super-tiny palette and some sort of small sketchbook that would always fit in my very tiny purse. I'm going to have to look into that. They should really show on their website that the lid can go flat - what a relief! I love how you can swap the pans in and out so easily and all the different sizes. Really neat. Such a bummer about the shipping, though. Dang. :-(

My smallest sketching kit is literally one plastic mechanical pencil with an eraser on the end, a fine liner, one small (koi) waterbrush, that eyeshadow palette with a clip and an A6 size sketchbook. They are all in a small IKEA VÄRLDENS pouch. 😎

I'm so impressed that they were able to recreate this palette - and they gave me one (made me feel super-special). I just love my QoR paints. It's hard to decide what to pull out and paint with each time, but I ALWAYS feel like using my QoRs. The number error cracked me up, lol.

oh my gosh your painting is beautiful.i painted with my qors the other day such nice paints ,im painting with my gansai tambis today im loving them so much,i got a chinese paint set at mt goodwill and the large round brushes are a dream to use with the gansai paint ,i wish i had friends like you lol

QOR is quite expensive but I have a big 11 ml tube of Ultramarine Violet and I don't mind of it travels a lot in water. They are really fun to use. I just wish they are more affordable in europe, too.
I was thinking of making my own wooden palette for a while... I just don't really know where to start. Maybe I should do some planning because I thought I would rather have an insert for half pans.
An insert for half pans would be a GREAT idea and I'd love to see it if you do end up making your own. Keep up posted! I'm glad you find QoR fun to use!

I also like my purple by the reds, so I just go red, purple, blue, green. Like the color wheel. Is there a reason you put the greens next to the reds in yours?
I usually go yellow to orange to red to purple to blue to green to brown, but the 3 across and 5 down kinda threw me for a loop on this one. I couldn't figure out how I'd want my paint organized, lol. I didn't have the right number of colors in each category to make it work out just right, so I ended up doing it this way. Thanks for the tip on QoR paints - hopefully someone took advantage of the sale!

I admit I definitely almost ordered one of those from Etsy, but I think they would get in my way because I like to do full spreads! I am even more excited to try my Qor paints now. I plan on putting them in a travel palette, so we'll see how that goes!! I am obsessed with the color indigo. I have a handmade one from Artistic Isle and it's probably my favorite paint. Thank you for the video, I'm excited to see what you do next!! I love the faded mountains in the background of this piece. Also, maybe you could take a sepia paint or marker and subtly hit some darker values on that mountain on the palette? Just a thought. Have a great day!

I'm guessing that since many commercial palettes and paint sets come in multiples of 6 (6, 12, 18, 24, etc.), when you saw three rows, the subconscious automatically went to "18". I know mine kept trying to after my recent purchase of a 15-well mini-palette, and I'm the one who made the purchase! =l=
I have a number of the wooden palettes in my Etsy Favorites list, but haven't quite worked up to actually purchasing one yet. Partly because there are so many varieties to choose from. They go from a small hunk of wood with a few holes for paint to some pretty intense full pochade boxes. Too many choices, and I'm still a bit too new at this particular medium to make what I feel is an informed choice... yet.
3D printed... Okay, I'll stop putting up the name of the Etsy shop, I ramble about it enough on so many channels that I think I have given the impression I'm the seller. I'm not - but when I really like something, I tend to gush about it. A lot. Maybe even too much. Sorry? Still, I love the four I have from that store, in part because of how small they are. I can easily tuck one into my day bag.
Since I also have a 3D printer of my own (I have an issue with hoarding skills... and the tools that go with them), I also made a few palettes that are even smaller - about 1" x 2.5". I made it as a design exercise... and to hold a set of mini pans that hold a set of paints that I picked up on a lark... and found I really liked. It's tiny and cute... but... it's _tiny_. I did make two mixing wells in the lid, but they're so small that I had to design and print an additional tray as an additional mixing space. Still, it was a fun exercise, and it gave me an even greater appreciation for those who actually do such things for a living.
Won't ramble too much longer, I promise. I haven't tried Qor yet... I _almost_ picked up one of the basics sets when I stumbled into Guiry's today (I had to go through the parking lot to get to the gas station, honest!), but considering that I've picked up a lot of new colors recently already, so I should probably use and get comfortable with some of those before I pick up even more. So I managed to walk out with just paper instead.
Good point, Mitzi! Is the Etsy shop you're talking about Shawns3DPrints? I'd love to go take a look. My son has a 3D printer and I never even thought about trying to use it like that. It's awesome that you are using it. I have no idea how to use my son's printer, but my background is computer engineering, so I'm sure I can figure it out eventually. So cool! Impressive that you were able to walk out of the art store with just paper! QoR someday...

I really enjoy my 3D printer, and the software side is pretty easy to work out. It's the mechanical side - the tuning and tweaking of the machine itself that has been my main headache. The machines are getting better, though, which is good, because once you understand the quirks they can be very useful. When I got back from the aforementioned shopping trip, I found that one set of paints I had ordered had come in. They were in half pans, but so gloriously over-filled that I was a little afraid to put them into a palette for fear of not being able to close it, so I opted to shift them into full pans. Except that I had five half pans of paint and three empty full pans. No problem. Go to my computer, pull up a file, run it through the prep software (slicing), save to an SD card, take it to the printer, turn on, select the file, and go.
Twenty minutes later, come back to the printer, pull off the newly printed full pan...
Change the filament from grey to white (oops?), print the second. Viola! Exactly what I needed, and in less time than it would have taken to get to the nearest art store in Parker. Better still, now that I have that sliced file saved, the next time I need more full pans, I can skip the first part and go straight to the printer.
Eh, I'm babbling again, so I'll limit myself to only one other thing... designing simple things isn't that hard to do either. You know how in the video you had some possible concerns with the paint being directly in the wood? Measure the diameter and depth, and make a simple cylinder in any basic modeling software. There are even free online options like Tinkercad. Run the resulting file from that through your slicer in "Vase Mode/Spiralize" (or settings to match) and boom, now you have a pan custom made for your custom palette!
((Brief interlude where I yell at my brain for suggesting yet another subject option for the channel I keep not having time to start in its original subject.))

@@MirandaWatsonArt Yep. I'm about an hour out of Denver on the High Plains. The mention of Guiry's might have been the only thing that might have been an indicator, as I think they're only in Colorado at the moment. And I've actually had plans for a channel, focusing on my polymer clay sculpting... but keep having chaos happen - especially this year! The current round is having to transform my living room from the junk/storage room its been for the last few years into a spare bedroom for some friends to say while they get back on their feet. Since I'm in terrible shape it's being done in stages - work until the body yells at me, watch a video while recovering, go back and work until I have to stop again. Despite the stop-and-go pace, I've gotten an amazing amount done. As always, though, there is still so much to do before they get here... Thursday morning.

@@PhoenyxAshe His printer is an Ender 3 as well. I bought my Golden Retriever in Parker about 13-1/2 years ago. She's still going strong for the most part. I understand on the clearing of spaces - I have a calendar reminder on my phone that says I have to do 15 minutes of emptying boxes every single day. Ugh. But that usually almost always ends up in one less box every single day, lol. It's working. Good luck with your Thursday deadline!
beautiful palette, but not enough mixing space for me. i think i would rather have less colours and more mixing space than vice versa. if they lost 3-6 colours and added an extra mixing well i'd definitely be tempted.
Yes, I think there's a lot that could be done to make something like this even more amazing, and mixing space is really high on the list!
Ive kust purchased a wooden palette. I was wondering if i need to coat the paint wells with a waterproof barrier of some sort. I see you didn't.

Anyone interested and who is disappointed when A GALLO a family owned handmade small bath watercolor company in Italy they sell out within hours usually one hour , Jackson’s is now carrying them and they’re on sale still a little expensive but from what I’ve seen on many you tube channels, are gorgeous most one pigment , when people get the email they won’t last long I got 10x83$ usd you would never get so many for that price if u even get them on their website they sell out within hours
