The United States entered the battlefields of Europe in 1918. Among the first Americans to participate in the fight are the U.S. Marines, who quickly adopt the names Devil Dogs. One of their most notable engagements is the Battle of Belleau Wood in June 1918, where the Marines fought the battle-hardened Germans for 26 days.

It used to be that the U.S. military would form and disband units at the start and end of wars. In the process we'd lose valuable troops, experience and knowledge which would lead to easily preventable mass casualty events early in a conflict.
Not sure if you guys have done "82nd All the Way" yet, but that song covers Sgt. Alvin York and the 82nd Infantry Division, where another great quote came from. After single-handedly killing 30 Germans and taking 134 prisoners, York's Divisional Commander said to him "Hell, York I hear you've captured the whole German Army" to which he replied, "no sir, only 134"

Dan Daly never said those words. the quote was sensationalized for the papers. He was a badass tho which you can see in the picture of him. he was on of only 19 american servicemen to receive the medal of honor twice and one of only 2 to be put up for a 3rd one but couldn't receive it cus of legislation so they gave him an DSC and a navy cross instead.
Most of the stories about Belleau Wood aren't true & like you say they've "sensationalized for the papers" all of a sudden it's and the Germans said "they've never fought anyone as tough as us" stuff.
