Here it is, then, the new Land Rover Defender against its rivals for the first time.
They include the Jeep Wrangler, the original 4x4. Since 1941, the Jeep has been setting the standard off-road.
Then there's the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. It is new too - although it doesn't look it - and with three locking differentials and superb off-road performance, it's no walkover.
We take an in-depth look at all three as we judge their respective off-road performance. Approach angles, ramp angles, departure angles, potential differential locking, wade depth, axle articulation: it's all under the spotlight here.

You can tell it's serious off-roading because Matt gets his knees out.
Thanks for this video I was having trouble trying to fall asleep.
I love these 'off-road' tests, especially badly executed ones like this one. It causes so much polarised commenting. I doubt there is a test in existence that would give you a finite answer as to which one is best - it depends on the circumstances. This is why people are asking where the Jimny is, or the Land Cruiser, both excellent cars in their own way. One thing is for certain, unless you're very wealthy, you're not going to take a brand new Defender (or either of the other two in this test) on an extreme off-road expedition. Overlanding maybe, but not where you're going to suffer warranty-excluding damage. We used to say no one would take a Discovery 3/LR3 off-road back in 2004 when they came on the market, but just look at the one TFL-Offroad are using - $5k worth of excellent off-roader. Having said that, I took my 2-week old Discovery 3 off-road and scratched it, but it didn't matter as I kept it for 6 years and 160,000 miles, and traded it for a Discovery 4, getting about a third of its new price as a trade-in.
I took my 2019 RRS off road for the first time with less then 1500kms on it. There are some ppl who do buy them and use them in the rough and tough stuff for sure
@@DrivenHard This is exactly why I have been looking at a defender, comfy for the family and off road capable for the weekend with a few mates. So far, no proper off road review though.
u r defo wrong-- quite a few 'not very wealthy' [depending on how u define tht] owners of the british spendy utes & the G wagon, have been seen offroad in the US & of course, the middle east, etc. But surprisingly high numbers in the US too. And, importantly, the overworry about warranty not being honored, is unecessary--these co's tell the owners to use the trucks in exactly very seemingly extreme ways.
18rabbit - You rip a hole in the door of a Defender against a tree stump and you’re not going to get that fixed under warranty. That’s what I meant.
The reason we guys are watching this video because not everyone is going to do this with their brandnew Defender.
Did you disconnect the front sway bar? Doesn’t look like it
Exactly. He didn’t even mention it, it’s one of the hallmarks of the Jeep.
It was, I own 2019 that's about what you get stock. Of course pretty much no one keeps them stock.
I think he did not disconnect it. At 22:14 the Jeep is grounding at the back because of the rear plate, not the rear diff.
i think the front sway bar was not disconnected. since all the tests were for articulation i think it should have been done
Foreign reviews try to make the American Jeep look inferior.
All the reviews of the Landover seem to be positive. And it seems legitimately decent off road. And miles better on road finally too. Well done JLR 👏 serious vehicle and serious effort. Who cares if its not always going to be used offroad, the others won't be used offroad all the time either. Well done Defender. Better than the old one in every way.
Nonsense. It's like football, when it comes to the real nitty gritty the Germans will find a way to win. Much is the same for the G Wagon over the Defender.
The Defender with the raised ride height, has much droop taken away, thus a wheel will lift off much more readily.
21:17 disconnect the sway bar
Great watching, very good reviews!
Great video. Nice one 👍
I expected more obstacles! Need a part 2
Did you have the sway bar disconnect selected for the articulation section with the Jeep? I'm surprised the G seemed more composed on the first articulation bit.
G wagon price starting from £96,220.00! I feel that should have been mentioned so you could buy the other two for the price of the Merc
Yes you right, but what’s the point of buying 2 not so good car if you can buy 1 very good one !?!?
So the best option is the G Class .
And by the way you can drive only one at the same time .
Have nice one m8
This is amazing!
Great video 👍
The videography on this is really well done, nice job!
Hello I am British and OH WOW imagine that I speak highly of the Land Rover!!!!
*your video is great. The Defender Is one of my favourite* 👍
Sadly it looks like the new Defender has a few problems
*OK*
*:v*
@NXM ok?
@NXM duck face?
Ok, do you have more to say…..
You know you've made it in life when you've got Dwight Schrute as your spotter!
r u talking about the guy in the green shirt I just skimmed thru the vid idk
That new defenders tires definitely held it back in terms of the traction lol
So did the lack of articulation and wheels being in the air LOL
Big ups to whoever chose the music in this video 👏🏾
they should measure articulation rather than eyeballing and guesstimating
And stop to have a chat everytime there's a hump.
Could've just narrate and show the stats at the end.
Rubicon is the winner in terms of articulation
@@andyb4796 irrelevant in the heaviest /steepest mogul offroading like this.
??????
@@18_rabbit In what way? Articulation is probably the single most important data point. A tire in the air provides no traction.
Now that was a pretty good off-road test. Well done.
Great job
If you really love hardcore off roading and only have one car, get the Jeep, it's epic out the box and a simple increase in tyre diameter makes it even more so. BUT, most of these luxury 4x4's are sooo capable off road these days you can have a lot of fun with just a swap to AT tyres and a small investment in a rotary polisher
This is the correct answer
Very true commit, however it all depends where you are. For instance in Australia, patrols and 70 series land cruisers are the go too for hardcore 4x4
@@luishagg4779 I'm in Australia (Brisbane) and agree there's loads of those cars but the Jeep is the one for hardcore rock work but not so much for outback touring, too much bull dust ingress plus in the middle of nowhere you can usually get a spare for a Toyota.
Roxor anyone!
@@user-dn3yk2qu7f Don't you guys have the Euro Ranger Raptor too?
These guys can make "the most interesting cars in the world " boring
My wife that could careless about cars just said the same thing.
LOL
It'd be interesting to compare them on road. In reality they all will go much further than most drivers would dare, but the fact is all off roaders, even military, spend 95% of their life on road.
The Mercedes Benz has the most reliable 4x4 system since 35 years ago!
I really like the new defender, and would definitely buy a off-road version if I could, it did really well.
I just found this channel of course I will subscribe
So guys pls suggest I will be locking for new defender110 petrol version .. is it good choice ?
Enjoyed watching the Video. The Defender Is my favourite
I agree people hate on it but it’s the one I would truly choose
@@jeromep3182 Yes, because the Defender is more comfortable on road than the other two
I rather the old won tbh
@@jacedavey3684 Off road yes, but on road? Truthfully no. If you don't agree I suggest you first drive the new Defender, its better than the Discovery or Range Rover Sport
LordTechPro I driven the new defender and on the road it is amazing, Tomorrow I’ll try it off road and use my old defender and see witch I like best but at the moment, I have mixed feelings
did you disconect the swaybar in the jeep?
Nice cars !
Unlock the sway bar disconnect on the Jeep you ninny.
If have called him a twit but that’s just how I roll.
yes try that against my rubicon 2.5" lifted 285 grabber at2 tyres with this new sissy rover, we tried in the desert its a disgrace for the big name "Defender", a car for the soccer mum.
Heliodor Gschwandl and the wrangler is useless on the road and a useless tourer
3 mins 16 secs was as much of my life I felt I could throw away watching this.
Do you mean 2 mins 16 secs, where they show the Landrover wheel missing two bolts?
Great video... Was the sway bar disconnected on the Jeep? It doesn't seem like it.
It's nice video.
I am the first new defender owner in Korea.
I am making off-road and camping videos. I think new defender is a great car!
hey, i love ur camping videos
@@akhileshyadav-wn7og Thanks😄👍
the cowboy hat in the wrangler....a nice touch.
That review was *incredibly*. Count them.
Does anyone know where this Quarry is in the U.K.? I’d love to take my Jeep here!
Did you dislocate the sway bar on the rubicon? Doesn’t look like it.
Did you disconnect the sway bar in the front of the Jeep? That would considerably increase your front axle articulation.
Interesting video! Thanks! The Land Cruiser is missing here.
If you had disconnected the front sway bar it wouldnt have lifted wheels at all
Out of interest, did you disconnect the sway bar on the Rubicon for those final 2 tests? Part of the reason many would choose the Rubicon spec
It doesn't seem like it. In my experience the would have been a lot more droop.
@@philipjooste9075 I agree with you Philip! That's why I asked. I have a JK Rubicon in UAE for the desert and Wadis and the articulation is extraordinary
@@jerrymyahzcat I don't quite understand what you are on about because good articulation is what allows a wheel to remain in contact with the ground in order to get traction. There is absolutely no need for a wheel to be "parallel with the car body" - I would rather have it making full contact with the ground to optimise traction and this is where a solid axles will always outperform independent systems. However.....nothing is said about LR's air suspension's reported ability to force down the wheel without traction. I guess it is limited by the articulation of its independent system.
@@jerrymyahzcat Agreed. But that's the point. The test was hardly extreme; the wheel wouldn't have been off the ground even 1" with the sway bar disconnected. And even if it is, it's not meaningless as it affects the control as you progress. No massive weight shift and roll. Independent only reduces the under body clearance
gregaperkin I think you’ll find the Defender in this example had the best underbody clearance. Also no rear diff “pumpkin” to drag on things as happens with solid axles.
Autocar do some of the best reviews, could listen to him all day. Rare to get a proper off road comparison test
And this wasn't a proper off-road test. I'm a Land Rover owner and fan, yet I can't understand why the Land Cruiser (even the less capable Prado version we get in the UK) wasn't included, and why didn't he disconnect the sway bar on the Jeep? We all know the solid axles and separate chassis make for better capability in extreme conditions, but if you've got to drive on the highway to get to your off-road destination, I'd still rather be in the Land Rover with its better handling and occupant protection
@@simonuden8450 I fully agree, this was hardly a proper off-road test. I'm also a Rover guy but even we have to admit the Jeep is head and shoulders above the others in terms of off-road capability. Towing, comfort, safety, luxury...sure, the others may win there but in terms of simple technical off-road capability and ease of modification the Jeep wins easily. The fact it's the only one to come with an off-road tire stock and can support up to a 37" tire with only tiny mods is telling. Try fitting a proper tire to the Merc or Defender2... For that mater, here in the US I've never actually seen a G on the trail. Plenty off them in upscale shopping areas but not a one on the Rubicon. I'd actually like to wheel with one someday to see how they do but it's just never happened.
Earlier this year I almost bought a wrangler, but when Right hand drive there is no where for your left foot! Defender is a far nicer place to be
That's the first thing I noticed when I test drove a Rubicon a week or two ago. Right hand drive (I am in Australia) driver footwell space is extremely limited.
What have they done to the Defender? It's huge and unessarily complicated.
Made a video game 🎮
"unecessarily complicated"
This is what you get when you make a car that is as capable as the new Defender.
Look at this test, it's very nearly as good off road as probably the best factory spec off-roader built (the jeep) and yet it is enourmously more capable on road, has a decent crash test result (check out the wrangler on the NCAP tests......ooof) has the highest fuel economy, has decent interior space, quality and feature content, and much better performance (0-60, etc)
In order do do that, to be very good EVERYWHERE, it means it has to be complex, so it can adapt to those different environments. The fact that is a very good off roader, despite i'd wager 99% of buyers almost certainly never going further off road than a gravel carpark, let alone trying out the 900m (easiyl class leading) wading depth, should be celebrated, and i think it actually represents reasonably value for money given that broad capability.
@@maxtorque2277 That's all very well, but I wouldn't want to take one on an expedition anywhere remote, and I also wouldn't want to maintain a large fleet of them if I was an army, utility company, argricultural business or the national trust. Going on my own experience of modern JRL reliability, a broken down new Defender is a lot less 'capable' than an old defender.
All they've done is create another vehicle in their product line which already has luxury vehicles which are very capable both on and off road. It doesn't fufill the same role as the previous defender, so it isn't really a replacement for it.
Defender is the king of off-road SUVs 🔥🔥
It's capable.. but reliability let's it down big time
So...was that a choice or a mistake that you didn’t lock the axles or disconnect the sway bars on the Rubicon?
The Wrangler & G-Wagon is A-grade 4X4's, since they've got front and rear locking diffs. The Defender is a B-grade, since a rear diff-lock is optional (LOL), and a front 'locker not available...
7:47 is that a massiva bug on the windscreen, or is it cracked?
Disappointing that they didn't use the G300D Professional for this.
Jeep Rubicons have a 44 degree approach angle... the best in production.
- 37* departure
The Jeep wasn't even put to a test. Come to America and go on a really rock crawling trail with that jeep exactly the way it is no modifications and watch what it can do
Can someone with proper knowlege explain the ticks the defender does? What it is and or why kt doea so?
Pick up my new hse 110 with adventure kit tomorrow cant wait
can someone tell what is the music that is there between 1:31 and 1:39? it sounds really cool. Or is it autocar's own music editing. This same music was used in the Rolls Royce cullinan drifting video as well
Sir did you disconnect the Jeeps front sway bar. That is an option in the Jeep and you did not mention it.
The independent suspension puts a wheel in the air and he says that's interesting LOL it's like his British mind was ready for the defender to be better despite Common Sense things
Like the new defender? Get disco 4 and save yourself a fortune.
Cheers from a Disco 4 owner
In fact my choice was between a disco 4 or a defender both great suv but I had enough money to buy the defender,
I was mostly impressed by the driver. good job!
These guys can make
Some day Mercedes will make a new G wagon squared. Tell me when it is out.
ok
113 Ultimatum 😂
Early 2021!
I must be crazy because i have seen at least 3 already.
I hope this is the one with the rear locking diff
the G Wagon got up there with ease - impressive
So did the Defender. But I know which one I'd drive long distance or tow with. That G Wagon is a pig to drive on the road. The Defender is much better.
@@gc2234 new G Wagon has front independent suspension, have you driven it on road?
@@-ZELTHELD- Yeah I have, mainly on the road. It's awful. It's a live rear axle, not independent all around like the Defender. The only one worse for ride comfort than the G Wagon is the Land Cruiser.
@@gc2234 Funny, for the NEW front the G gets so much praises....then you can get it with air as well.....your statement is hard to believe, especially, if you need street performance, you can get an AMG as well....
Did you even disconnect the sway bars on the Jeep with the switch?
3 cars/different tyres what's the point of this test?
Well going by this test,,Mercedes it is!!!
Old school !!!!!
nice
Disconnect that Jeeps sway bars, that's stock on a Rubicon...
precisely...I were just going to to ask politely, if the dude did remember to disconnect the sway bar in the Rubi...never happened to me to have a wheel off the ground under that circumstances in my Rubi. 😉
It would have been nice to have a late Puma Defender to make it a four way contest to see what limitations the old model had against the new.
You are doing full steering turns with the front diff locked on the G class, that too at relatively high speeds!!
very nice car
What engines are in these v6 gasoline or DIESEL ??
The Thumbnail itself receals conclusion!!!
The rubicon has sway bar disconnect, did not hear anything about that, was it disconnected? And it has lockers front and rear, looked like the fronts not locked on the final obstacle
love the hat what make is it ?
The defender having a very slightly better break over angle means nothing because it's deep water is going to put bigger tires because it can fit bigger tires without even modding it
Hi. I would like to know which model of the Toyota that Daniel Craig was driving as 007 and which none of Defenders managed to win. Thank you so much.
I also want to know where the land cruiser stands in this line-up of vehicles.
It's waiting to tow them back to the garage 😂 I'm a defender fan🤞👌💪 but this 1 is too sensitive
its just a shame you cant get the steal bumper in the UK mine has taken a beating so far since i bought my jl in 2018 i am finally going after market after 2 years but it did its job well its definitely a little warped tho
It would be interesting to see how these compare to the new bronco.
most 4x4 in the uk spend all their life onroad , sod that in the jeep
or a Land Rover
@@TProfileG true
Its like a warranty claim meets a warranty claim , meets a warranty claim all on a suburban dealers desk
Where the hell did those jeeps angles come from?? The rubicon should have approach of 44 and departure of 37. And a 4dr jeep will have a breakover of 22.6
And were the sway bars disconnected on the Jeep?
Yeah, i dont think he disconnected the sway bars
Export models have 32 inch tires vs 33 inch tires for North American Market.
Where’s the landcruiser if you’re off-roading
Stuck at customs because they can't sell it in Europe anymore. 😂 It doesn't meet any safety or emissions regulations.
Dreadnought9T Nope, they can sell them, they just decide no to sell them because there is better markets to sell them than Europe. Regarding security the Prado, or land cruiser 200 series are rated 5 stars, and even the land cruiser 70 series got a 5 star rating at Ancap which is where they sell the most. The wrangler got a 1 star rating on Euro and Ancap and rolled over two times on the IIHS tests in US. Anyway there is no place in Europe that justify to have a Land cruiser so better to have them where they are really need and can show all the value and capacity they have. 👍🏻
K W the reason is they are the best 👍🏻
@@dexterrr9163 Cheap and Land cruiser don't belong in the same sentence! A full size (200 series) Land cruiser sells for G Wagen money here in Australia.
@@humbertorubi2735 The Landcruiser J7 or J20 meets the Euro 5 emission norm (which was vaild like 7 years ago). Now they need to meet Euro 6d. So no, they can´t sell them in Europe.
You should have disconnected the front sway bar in the Rubicon, much more flex and no wheels of the ground at all!
The G400d is going to be a monster...
now go rock crawling and see who breaks parts and who has the highest repair bill
They’re all amazing off roaders. The G has 3 locking diffs and it’s definitely superior to all other, but this doesn’t mean the Def or Jeep are by any means bad.
The Wrangler Rubicon has 3 locking differentials
Did you use the sway bar disconnect on the Wrangler?
Lol he didnt
