No need to turn off updates. Just edit your Starlink wifi connection and change it to low data mode. In low data mode updates are disabled anyway and you won't have to worry about forgetting to re-enable them.
thanks! Much easier than trying to remember to turn updates off every time. I just tried to update an app and it asked me before doing the update. Nice and convienant!
Good starter tips for the average user. Another way to reduce data usage is by setting your devices' Wi-Fi profile to "Metered," which prevents unnecessary app data consumption and pauses automatic OS updates. Additionally, using a custom DNS that blocks ads and trackers can make a big difference, as 10-50% of your data might be consumed by analytics and tracking services.
Are these items that you think a non-tech person (me) could research and incorporate into a video to help people or would you recommend making an IT friend to configure things for me and paying in beer?
@@OverlandCalling You could definitely research and incorporate these tips into a video to help people! Setting the Wi-Fi profile to "Metered" is simple and can be done directly in most devices' settings under the SSID/Wi-Fi network properties of the connected network. As for ad-blocking via DNS, it's just a matter of using the Starlink app to set up a custom DNS. Several free, easy-to-use ad-blocking DNS services are available, like AdGuard DNS or NextDNS. These services block ads, trackers, and more, making them an excellent solution for reducing data usage with minimal effort.
EXCELLENT! Probably the easiest way to stop unneeded update downloads from MSFT, just set it to metered connection straight to the SLink router, and for me in my trailer park (fiber) connection is unmetered. Using a VPN can also block ads and trackers.
You should consider changing the WiFi to low data mode when connected to Starlink. That will take care of background data and updates while using that specific WiFi. Go to your phones WiFi menu, click the info icon next to your Starlink WiFi name when connected, change setting to low data mode. 👍🏼
Just took my first trip with Starlink Mini, thank you for the great tips! I also found out that heat (driving from Texas to Colorado) can impact data usage performance.
I have a nvidia shield that I monitor the data on also use data saver option. This weekend I used peacock to stream a football game. The shield was the only thing connected to starlink. The shield showed I used 1.6Gb of data to stream, however Starlink showed that I used 15Gb. Now when I tried using this same method on my hotspot and the data usage was on right on with one another. I don't know why Starlink is reporting more data usage then I actually used. I kinda feel like I am being scammed.
Wow that is very strange. I have never been over 10 gig for an entire day. Even on my worst day with teems meetings for 2 hours, phone calls for at least 2 hours, uploading this video, and over an hour of RUclips videos. Been using it for 50 days now and everything seems in line with what I expected. Reaching out to customer support may be of help. I didn’t have much luck when I was trying to get the spec for the cable, but maybe your experience will be better.
@@spsjason2 I hope you fair better than my request. I have had great luck with customer service from other companies on products, but the one time I tried Starlink customer service was not great. Very little time needed to submit, so still worth taking the chance.
@@spsjason2 One of the other people that commented mentioned that iCloud sync should be turned off to save data. Does not sound like it applies here, but figured I would mention it.
yep I burned through my share of data that way. honestly I never had one slow enough to give problems with video calls, so I quit and only use statistics to see if I will have any drops.
hmm I thought it did, but never got scientific about it to confirm. I know they charge you for Starlink updates. It booted up initially with downloads needed and I saw that update chunk hit my usage
Also turn low data mode on in the wifi setting on your phone.
yep I can’t believe I forgot about that one for the video 🤦
Good info! I wish more folks would get to the point like you do, instead of 'yammer, yammer, yammer for 20 minutes before getting to the info. Thanks!
Thanks! Ha that gets on my nerves also. I try to keep things short and sweet.

Great collection of tips in the video and comments!
Thanks glad it helped!

Awesome tip! thank you very much for that info!
Great idea! On android you set it to "Treat as metered network" instead of "Detect automatically" under the settings for the particular network.
Good practical recommendations. Thanks
You are welcome. Always on the lookout for ways to save.

nice! Glad some of the tips helped. Yep heat seems to make things power cycle quite a bit.
I also set ( on macbook pro, and galaxy note 9) under wifi options for each wifi network. I set to metered data checkbox or slider.
awesome! That just reminded me to set it on my MacBook!
I’m finding if I just supplement mt cellular dead spots with the 50gb it’s working well.
yes very true. Sharing the load between cell and Starlink is a great way to do it.
Also, when watching RUclips, turn off the "auto play" feature.
oh heck I totally forgot to mention that one. Thanks for bringing it up!

Good tips.
thanks!
Also try setting the Starlink WiFi to Low Data Mode on your IOS devices.
yep that low data mode is a good one! I can’t believe I forgot about that.
Nice one
Thanks!

Turn off iCloud backup
oh that is a super good one! My iCloud has been full for so long that I don’t even think of that anymore.
I’m bad about running speed tests. Wasted data.
I don't think it counts your data if you use the starlink speed test
