La Salle Pass near MOAB
I originally came to La Salle Pass to escape the MOAB heat and get some work done. I survived the shelf road, found cooler temps, and much more. This was a gem that allowed me to recenter and make it through some stressful times.

Starlink Mini USB-C car adapter power over 55 ft away
What an adventure! I work remote as well and am looking to starrt a similar trip this summer! How much battery/solar are you working with to comfortably run starlink and your computer during the work week?
It is absolutely worth it! I have 240ah. That has been plenty for 5 days straight including my fridge in almost all environments. For this past trip I had a 180W panel that I used to keep things topped off. When I was in Death Valley it was 109 deg and I had trouble keeping up since my fridge was running all day, but still had enough for 5 days. If you use 50W per hour as your draw per hour on Starlink Mini and your laptop it is a pretty good way to estimate power draw. My usage averaged below that at 45 when using my HP and 40 with my MAC, but having the extra buffer was nice when calculating things out.
I just stumbled onto your channel and this series. I also work remote and can go wherever I want. I'm an overland guy and I've decided to go full time on the road this year. I'll definitely be following your videos for some inspiration. Great stuff!
Heck yeah! Welcome to the channel! I have a few years till my daughter goes off to school. Once that happens I am headed out full time for at least a year. I don’t have a lot of dedicated working from the road stuff posted yet, but you might find something useful in my “Working Truely Remote” playlist. If you have any questions just let me know.
Heck, I stayed at cabins in Flintstone on a recent motorcycle trip - didn't even realize Green Ridge was there. (I didn't have my camping gear with me though.) Beautiful area. There seems to be some kind of large park south of Flintstone too, but I don't know anything about it.
Crazy that huge area are still hidden away. I will have to check that other area out next time I am through there.
You have the best channel content that I have watched , simple and yet informative, thank you. I do have a question about your tire size ,are they stock?
Thank you very much! I went up to 35” (34” in reality). On my second set of Kenda RT tires. Originally got them because they were narrow and kept me legal in PA for even with the fender. On my second set now just because I really like them.
Hey buddy. Pretty sure I just saw you in Virginia Beach. Kind of funny because my buddy and I are going up to the mountains tomorrow and Saturday to do union Springs. Just stumbled on your videos the other day. I had the gray gladiator on London Bridge.
Small world. Yep that was me. Sweet Gladiator! Should be a different world up there with the snow.
I own a plumbing company pretty close to that location on London. Hit me up if you want to get together for any trail rides. Or projects on the rigs. My shop is close by with tons of tools!
@@robbertolino Awesome! I beat old Max up pretty good over the last year. I have no rear sway bar and a bent rear axle that I know of. I am sure I will find more when I dig into it some more. Have to go through it before the weather turns good and I head out again. Once I get it back in shape I will hit you up for that trail ride.
I am envious of your break spot, it was beautiful
It was a great spot to escape the heat for sure.
Thanks for the call out to the page. Moab was fun, so was Canyon Lands.
Happy to do it. That area never disappoints. I have been there 4 times not and have never been at a loss for new sights to see.
hi , Can I use Google Earth while driving?
Hi! I think it should work fine, but when I get a break from work later today I will light up google earth and take a drive to test it out.
@@OverlandCalling Thank you and I appreciate that.
@ it worked. It was a little jumpy, but able to follow. I will have to give it a try next time I am out on the trail. Great way to have a view of what is ahead.
@@OverlandCalling I hope it works very well. because it's the best way for me to get an off-road map. I don't have a Garmin mapping device, can you recommend a great one at a good price?
@@oldstory-sz4qc I use Gaia, but the subscription costs 50 a year. I like your idea of using Google Earth and if it is working for you I would not change a thing. You just can't beat that price!
Alternate is a lot of fun going up the mountain . Have not done it coming down . I hit big levels a lot , and started hitting all the trails around flagpole knob
I love that whole area up there! I agree that the alternate is a great time. I run this trail at least once a year and the camp spot on the top is a stop on every one of my trips out West. Being up there just gets my head in the right spot!
What fridge are you running?
I have been running an ARB Elements fridge since I first started long trips almost 4 years ago. It has never failed me. It has held up very well living in the back of the truck 90% of the year. The stainless steel exterior is super durable and I drop stuff on it all the time lol. Drawbacks are: Temperature - Mine shows about 5 degrees higher than it actually is inside. I just set it to 28 and that does the trick to keep things cold without freezing. Weight - It is heavy. Energy usage - This is an older design, so there may be more efficient fridges out there. Overall I am very happy with it. I really beat the crap out of it and it just keeps going. It even survived 109 degree temps in Death Valley for 5 days straight. If it ever dies I will most likely I will go with a different fridge since I want to cut some weight and also have duel zone capability.
Anywhere back in there I couldn’t get in my Crosstrek?
I think you should be just fine. The creek crossings should not be steep enough to be an issue and the hill after the second crossing won’t be an issue unless it is muddy. I would not recommend going past where I stopped in the video. That next leg to Flagpole knob has some obstickles that would be dicey.
@ Awesome. Thanks!
Excellent tips. The new SLink 50 GB "backup plan" is really what it's called - supposed to be for a backup in case your main internet goes down. In my case I live in a trailer park with a shared 250 Mbps fiber connection provided by the park manager. Somehow it's limited to 25 Mbps per connection, so whether I run a speed test on my computer or my XBox, they both read 25 Mbps down and up most of the time. During the MLB World Series or on Sundays when there's an NFL playoff game, I get less of course because everyone else is using a connection (there is no OTA TV here or cell towers, I live in a sparsely populated valley in N. Calif). All TV here is streaming, whether it's CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, or ESPN. So I really need SLink, especially when I leave the trailer park to go to the store. It would be extremely rare for me to use over 50GB of SLink especially on a phone or tablet, but it's important to have it available in case my truck breaks down halfway there. The nearest Walmart is about 50 miles away. When I go to Walmart, I'll take SLink with me just in case. But using starlink only when absolutely necessary, I never expect to exceed 50 GB.
I received a Megamat 10 LW, but it is losing too much air during the night.... I contacted Exped but they don't want to refund or replace it with a new one despite of only a couple of weeks after purchase, instead, they offer to repair it which will take way too long for me because I am coming soon, except more than one month. bad of Exped.
I am sorry to hear that you are having to deal with that. Did you by chance get it at REI? You may be able to try exchange at one of their stores. I have had good luck with exchanges through the store in the past.
I’m finding if I just supplement mt cellular dead spots with the 50gb it’s working well.
yes very true. Sharing the load between cell and Starlink is a great way to do it.
Enjoy your videos! This type of trip is one I dream of taking one day.
Thanks! It is easier than you think and you need less stuff than you think. I took my first month long trip out to Moab with my daughter 3 years ago and had very minimal gear. RTT (because daughter is a ground tent snob), rainfly for an awning, fridge, 500w power station, cheap stove, and some sleeping bags. it was lifechanging!
Great video. My favorite of the series so far. I loved your thought about overlanding. What you did not pack your suite? And phone calls on the trail, did you buy a new car warranty? Thanks for the call out. Much appreciated. That semi was amazing, that is scary as hell. I wonder how he made it. Wow. In hindsight, I do wish we could have explored together more. I need to go to Moab and RimRocker again sometime in the future. They must have graded it between when I drove it and you went through it, or you took the bypass, not sure. The rock formation was beautiful and looked like it had good potential to camp at. That steep hill was a bear to pull my trailer up, but it was worth every second. The color of the sky and valleys, rocks and hils were amazing. Great video my favorite so far. Amazing seeing you on the Rim Rocker.
Thanks! The warranty didn't cover off-road damage LOL. I can't even imagine being the person driving that thing. I am glad they made it out on their own. I was not looking forward to packing up camp and heading to help. Had the full office rig deployed and that would have taken an hour to pack up. The spot by the rock was a good one. There were also some nice river view spots nearby. You can see the vehicles on the video, but I didn't go back there since I didn't want to bother them. Can't wait to run some trails with you next time we meet up. It seemed the fates were against us this go around, but next time we will make it happen for sure. I am already building up vacation time for the next trip. Of course I still have not decided when I am leaving or where I am going LOL.
My son and I ran that last April North to South on our way to Great Smoky Mountain National Park. I love the dual personality of the trail- half rock crawling, half big bog holes. Looking forward to going back.
This is one of my favorite goto trails and I love the duel personality as well. Great camping and wheeling in one! Did you get caught by that one super soft mud hole at the end that I seem to forget every time I run it?
@ nah. But the holes were really low as it was pretty dry and I always hit em with a bit a speed at the entry and maintain through, just in case. I grew up in South Jersey and wheeled Wharton as a kid- they have vehicle swallowing ones at that place so it was engrained in me early on to never let my guard down with em. Lol.
@ That's some good advice! Every time I have gotten stuck in the mud and had to winch it was because I was going too slow. Last min throttle ended up digging in axle deep.
@@OverlandCalling ha. It’s funny isn’t it- throttle offroad is all about using just the rightv amount at just the right time. One of the things I love about offroading is the precision we need, and I love trying to get it perfect. When you do feels so good. And if not, well a little winching is always fun!! Lol
@@dadventuretv2538 Ha soo very true! I drive a manual and am absolutely floored when I get just the right amount to go slow over the big stuff, but don't let the engine die.
Dude, with the coordinates, hell yes thank you!
my pleasure! Nothing takes the stress out of running trails like knowing possible places to stop for camp. If there are ever any cords I don’t post up for spots in my videos just hit me up in the comments with the time point and I will hand them out. Sometimes I forget to add things in during the edit.
@ well since you ask what was that second spot? Lol. That one looked sick!
@@CryePantsDom if you mean that ridge top spot right at where the trail turns a sharp right the cords are 38.51146, -79.12656
@ dude, you are the fckn man! Thank you!
@@CryePantsDom Glad I could help. Hope you enjoy your camping out there! It is a great trail and if you are up for something a bit more challenging you can take the follow on trail all the way to Flagpole Knob. It gets quite a bit rougher and I recommend high clearance 4x4. It comes with an awesome camp stop at Meadow Knob. Lots of other trails and camp spots for the area in my Virginia playlist too.
Watching this when it’s 23 degrees and snow and ice everywhere in DC, as a reminder of better days to come. Not sure if you have ever done it, but there are some beautiful campsites along Dunkle Hollow Road (if coming down from Flagpole) once you get down off the mountain along the creek before you get to Switzer Lake.
I do the same thing to cheer me up when the temps drop lol. The spots down Dunkle Hollow are great ones as well!
Nice. Review.
Thanks!
What size is your awning?
8.2 feet by 8.2 feet
@ debating whether or not I could fit one this big on a Nissan Pathfinder 😂
@@BigLeapofFaith Do you mean the Duo? If so it may work. I just checked the REI site and it looks like they have some special SUV shapes now. My recommendation would be to purchase from REI or Amazon to test it out and have easy return in case it does not fit.
@@BigLeapofFaith ignore that last comment. I thought it was for something else. The 8 foot one may be a bit long. I took a tape measure to get an idea what the length would look like before buying. Also FYI there is a max recommended overhang past where you attach to your vehicle. They have a 6.5 foot version that should fit no problem. I used that size for a year and thought it was fine for 1-3 people. Plus it is cheaper!
Hi there, I tried a couple of the other cables aswell that you showed in your videos but this one is perfect, I ordered one, thanks
Any idea how much it weighs?
The small size in this video weighs 5.25 lb and the larger size they offer weighs 9.4 lb
@ Amazing, thanks for the help. Couldn’t find that info anywhere.
@@oliverchurch3070 no problem at all happy to help out!

When the 5.5/2.1 barrel connector is plugged into the OEM power supply/one of the ports on portable power station or the USB-PD plugged into the portable power station 12-24 volt booster is the positive spring loaded stud on the 3 in 1 live?
Nope not live. When the USBC and the 12v are both plugged in at the same time the USBC is the only one that pulls power.
Ha ha ha. My Precious. Love it!
Guess who binge watched lord of the rings over Christmas 😂
I enjoyed this Brian. Thanks. It's been a long time since we've been to SD.
Glad you enjoyed it. I am looking forward to taking my family back there for some more exploring.
Thanks! But could you confirm that you cannot use starlink mini as LAN network router, I mean there is no communication between devices through starlink mini? For example I can’t control Gerbo GX or some other smart device requires LAN network. Thanks in advance
I don't have a way to test comms between devices, but I did a little digging specifically for the Cerbo GX. I found this video covering setup with different routers. No mention of starlink. I did ask the question for you in the comments though. He seemed like he really knew what he was talking about. Here is a link to the vid from Nov 2024 ruclips.net/video/ENg6gvuWYAY/видео.html
Can I use this with car auxiliary on. I sit in car in the morning before I go in to work. I don't want to run the car if I can just have a heated blanket to keep warm for about 30 -45 minutes. Please let me know soon. I am trying to buy one as quickly.
I checked the specifications and it looks like you can. Spec is 48W max at 12V. That comes out to 4 amps, so as long as your car plug can handle 4 amps you should be good. When I get home in about 2 hours I will grab mine and do a real life test for you. That is plenty for my jeep, but cars vary so I would recommend checking your manual on the plug capacity while you wait to see how my real life testing goes.
Thank you for the response. I have a Hyundai Kona 2021 SEL.
I called dealer and mentioned what I was going to do. He stated that life of battery would be drained. Cost of battery is higher than cost of gas for running the car. If I had a different source for power, it would be ok. Like the way you use it.
@@lynrodbro3109 that's what I was thinking as well. My recommendation would be to get a small power station that can be charged by the car when it is running and the blanket could run off the power station while the car is off. Cost on those they of power stations are around $200-250. The lithium batteries used in most allow use in down to 14 deg F. Lower than that it will not work or damage the battery.
Can you drive away from it
It is possible if you have a quick release from your car, but it is a pain. Also it does not stand up when taken off. I only ever did it twice. Here is a video that will show what it looks like when removed for drive away mode. Time spot you want is 6:28 ruclips.net/video/xBLSqu7q1qQ/видео.html
1st time viewer. Glad you enjoyed Wyoming. Born and raised here in Wyoming. Love my home state. You have a Instagram? Safe travels
Thanks for checking out the video! Wyoming was great and I didn't get to explore nearly as much as I wanted to. I will have to return for sure. I don't have instagram unfortunately. Trying to find the time for other platforms, but just RUclips keeps me pretty busy.
Thanks brother!
My pleasure!
Awesome vid!!
Thanks glad ya liked it!
I lived in md 30+ years and never knew that was there. Are the trails 4x4 only or can I take a Subaru forester or maybe a 1st or 2nd gen crv? I would love to go out there and do some camping and fishing and trailing of course
Road conditions may change with heavy rains, but 95% of the ones I was on were gravel roads. One road had a washed out section, but that was it. I would stop in at the visitor center when they are open and ask current road conditions.
Only seen two of your videos and had to subscribe. I like that you are not selling the items, just describing them. Thanks a lot and keep like this.
Thanks and welcome to the channel! Glad ya like the style.
Hey! Great review. One question I have is where did you purchase the rack used to set the tent on top and tie it down? I have a ford maverick with a bed length of 4.5 feet and have thought about getting this for myself and two kids, but wasn't sure if it would work for my vehicle. Thank you!
Thanks! The bed rack when I made the video was from Maximus-3. I can’t say that I recommend it though. They used RIVNUT connections that gave me a lot of problems stripping out. It actually ended up falling apart toward the end of the trip and I replaced it with one from Xtrusion Overland. I loved the look of it. The Maximus rack was not bad and it did last 3 years of heavy wheeling, but in the end welds broke and ratchet straps were the only thing holding it together. I would not recommend it to my friends, so I never did a video to recommend it on the channel.
Barring that road and traffic, that was a pretty dang nice camp site looking at The Pinnacles.
yep stat was a sweet spot. Kept the illusion going in my mind by not standing where I could see the road lol
Thar is more like a side by side trail. My cousun haw a kawasaku krx setting up on 35" tires.
Seeing this video I now know that I will be eventually upgrading from 34" to 37" tall tires on my 2024 Colorado zr2 truck.
yeah it did seem like it would be easier on a side by side for sure.
yep 37 would do better with the underside scraping. Running my 35 (34) actual had me rubbing my belly quite a bit.
We picked up an affordable house to fix up for retirement , I have a couple years to go but it’s East River and slowly cleaning it up , I hunt fish camp and will be looking forward to exploring SD and ND 👋
that’s awesome! I would love to have a place closer by the area instead of having to drive from the Eats coast to get there.
Bought my2024 Colorado zr2 last june 29 th. Took it up up to bumpus cove,tn 13 miles up onto forestry road. That mountain laurel pinstriped my truck up good. That trail was almost as narrow as this Kenedy ridge trail you was driving on.
Nice, now you never have to worry about pinstripes ever again!
Good evening from Godley Texas, awesome view of the Pinnacle. I bet the sound of flowing water was peaceful. Definitely a remote location. Smoke is never a good sign. Continue living life to the fullest by doing what you love. Stay safe and happy travels 😎
Thanks! It was an amazing spot. On my list of return places without a doubt!
Loved Monument Ridge and that area. It is beautiful. That entire area was breathtaking.
Yep thanks for making sure I knew about it!
Simple DIY solutions are the best. Usually beats the mass produced items. The added satisfaction of a DIY one off solution is awesome too.
Very true! I love trying to work things out on my own before buying a solution. Cheaper and more satisfying. Hopefully my buddy's wife is not too mad at him for giving away her garden kneeling pad LOL.
Have you considered a magnetic mount for the mini...would save you the trouble of strapping it down. I use one on the roof of my Suburban and it holds extremely well. Securing it to your rack wouldn't be a problem.
That's a good idea! My rack is aluminum unfortunately. I may look into ways to add metal to give it something to stick to.
So sorry about your tire troubles. Glad it got fixed! I’ve never heard of devils peak and was surprised at what it looked like close up. You peaked my interest enough to search it and learn something new. The earth is beautiful and incredible. We are so lucky to live here. Thanks for sharing the views with those of us who are locked into one place. Maybe one day…
I only learned about Devils Peak shortly before going there myself. Agree 100% about this amazing world. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Speed tests eat up data??? Oh gosh. That is a great tip to know. Thanks! If you could please answer about how the 50G worked out for you, that’d be awesome. Great, informative video! And you have the most gorgeous office spaces to work from!!!
I don’t know 100% about speed test eating data, but it seems like they do. I know 100% that doing the Starlink update when I got it out of the box ate up data, so I figure testing does too. The 50g plan worked well for me. With my use I only used about 75 gigs a month. That includes work email, online training, video conference calls, and about 1-2 hours a day of calling over WiFi. I didn’t watch Netflix and stuck to 1080p videos from RUclips.
I unfortunately had to return my exped megamat 10 to REI becuase it wasn't retaining air. I absolutely loved the mattress when I first got 'into bed' but not happy with the way it lost support during the night. I thought it was a faulty product and hoped to get a replacement but apparently REI is not supporting this product anymore. I'm going to try and find it from another retailer and give it another try. Thanks for the great review.
oh that is no good! I would contact the company directly with your issue. I have not had to reach out to Exped with issues, but I have had outstanding luck with other name brand products backing their stuff. You pay more for name brand, but that service warranty is where you can make the extra money not going through Amazon pay off.
oops that didn’t come out right about Amazon….what I ment was buying cheap non-name brand stuff in general.
I just got the rack from Amazon. I hope to give this a try next week.
Awesome can’t wait to hear how it works out!
I love that the simplest on the fly "maybe this DIY solution will work," becomes the go to way to make this happen. I didn't think this solution would be so long lasting when we were searching for random foam in my garage, but damn if it doesn't seem like the perfect way to address the problem, and still motoring on.
yep I figured for sure I would have some fancy mount by now. this thing works like a champ though, so thinking it is here to stay.
I like how you utube creators walk down a hill, set up a camera , then walk back up the hill , and come back down so we can see you coming down the hill ! 😂😂😂😂 smh
Yes filming that sort of stuff is always a bit of extra excercise. You get your steps in for sure lol. I feel especially silly filming myself getting down from my tent first thing in the morning. The truth is that I have already been up for an hour pounding coffee to be awake enough to put a sentence together 🤣
